Notre Dame Lost Recruit Jamel James To Texas State?
The Fighting Irish weren’t relevant enough for one recruit. Jamel James, a three-star running back out of Katy Texas, decommitted from Notre Dame in December. Two days ago, he opted to stay closer to home, by signing with Texas State, the team that went 4-8 and just joined FBS. This is far more shocking than when Notre Dame lost committed wide receiver Deontay Greenberry to Houston on Signing Day.
James had committed to Notre Dame in June, after decommitting from Arkansas when Bobby Petrino was fired. He was expected to pursue offers from Washington and Arizona State, among others. That’s certainly an interesting decision. [Update: A lot of message board noise about grades, though it seems odd that Notre Dame would take a flier on a kid who was in doubt to qualify.]

He’s no Denzel Ward.
January 29th, 2013 at 3:53 PM
This kid must love to party. Texas State has a 2:1 girl/guy ratio, has the sluttiest girls of Texas, and is right next to Austin. NFL aint on his mind
January 29th, 2013 at 3:55 PM
It’s more than likely that ND told him they were pulling his scholly and gave him an out.

It’s also near the Guadalupe River, which is a pretty fucking fantastic place to spend a spring or summer day.
January 29th, 2013 at 3:56 PM
It’s more than likely that ND told him they were pulling his scholly and gave him an out.
Yeah but that’s not interesting enough for a post.
January 29th, 2013 at 3:56 PM
This information would’ve been useful 6 years ago, thanks.
January 29th, 2013 at 3:56 PM
And I almost went to UTEP, too…
January 29th, 2013 at 3:57 PM
Nah. He just loves that giant outlet mall.
I’m guessing he was going to get his scholly pulled or ND was already stacked at RB. Another one of their RB commits is teetering on decommitting and going to Auburn.
January 29th, 2013 at 3:57 PM
Doesn’t want to sign with a flash-in-the-pan new money program that gimmicks up its uniforms at the drop of the hat.
Who can blame him?
January 29th, 2013 at 3:58 PM
I’m also going to guess they have their own strands of STD’s that the rest of the country hasn’t even heard of.
January 29th, 2013 at 3:58 PM
He could also respect women?
January 29th, 2013 at 3:59 PM
Texas State probably has much, much more talent on campus than South Bend. Just ask Manti who had to venture onto the net for hopes of pussy.
January 29th, 2013 at 3:59 PM
Surely there are some grade issues or something else is going on. Perhaps he was told to look elsewhere.
January 29th, 2013 at 3:59 PM
And I almost went to UTEP, too…
Was it for the football game handjobs?
January 29th, 2013 at 4:00 PM
Kid had an offer from USC…
January 29th, 2013 at 4:01 PM
That Vandy commit RB who just dropped his verbal is headed to AUB as well I believe.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:01 PM
James was ranked the 97th player in Texas by rivals. With Greg Bryant committed to ND, makes sense to go elsewhere

January 29th, 2013 at 4:02 PM
OT…out-fucking-rageous.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:02 PM
Yeah i was reading about him. I’ll take whatever from wherever at this point.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:03 PM
Just think if he played in more tournaments.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:03 PM
They offer a lot of recruits. Just like any other program. They also don’t have one 3 star signed either. Like was said earlier. Either a grades issue or mutual departure.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:03 PM
AUB will land Foster and a couple of other kids. They’ll be fine. I think Gus will always have them competitive. I really do.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:04 PM

its true. its so, so true. everyone is just drunk and screwing.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:04 PM
Good post.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:05 PM
But not like Bama, who offers new guys this late into the game, has only 5 spots available but tells 12 guys they’ll accept their verbal. Yet no one wants to talk about how that makes any sense.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:05 PM
It was reported lots of places that it was grades, he didn’t meet the guidelines they set out for him for his tenuous commitment, he’s gone.

January 29th, 2013 at 4:09 PM
see, on this note, i give jpq the floor…if tiger played more places, he’d win less. look at his big win venues…doral, firestone, torrey…super long, so the short hitters dont have a chance, and room to miss off the tee.
tiger won’t play at riviera (doesnt like the course) or colonial (?), so im not sure he’d be sweeping those places. he hates TPC sawgrass (can’t blame him), and even when he was by far the best in the world, has only won there once.
he’d probably have maybe a dozen more wins if he played 4 more events per year, but that’d hurt his winning % a bit.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:09 PM
His mom learned there are no scissor lifts at Texas State and ordered him to switch.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:09 PM
If by “reported” you mean speculated about on message boards…
January 29th, 2013 at 4:10 PM
[Update: may have nothing to do with the relevance of Notre Dame.]
January 29th, 2013 at 4:10 PM
NSD can’t come here soon enough. Just so it’s over.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:10 PM
Was it a committable offer?

god I loved college.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:11 PM
While it’s true that I suspect this stuff isn’t floated on SI.com, this is clearly a case of being told to look elsewhere more than choosing to look elsewhere.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:12 PM
Whoever thought up the hat ceremonies needs to be shot in the head.
/Looking at you ESPN
January 29th, 2013 at 4:12 PM
And to be fair, Texas State has twice as many national championships as Notre Dame since 1980.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:12 PM
This is how it is every year. Season ends, and CFB-starved people like myself get really into recruiting from, say, Jan 12th-signing day. However the final week or so you just want the little fuckers to sign and get it over with.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:14 PM
I blame the internet. back in the day you’d get a newsletter every week or two.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:15 PM
Later in his career I could see Tiger taking a turn and maybe taking on Colonial, Rivieria, Hilton Head, etc – when his power diminishes and his iron game remains elite.
He’s 14-15 years into his career though, and he’ll have more missed tourneys to injuries most likely. His schedule won’t be changing much. He gets $3mm to play in those cash grabs overseas. He schedules around those a bit too.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:15 PM
All of the blame is on ESPN. The first player I can remember picking on national TV was Lorenzo Booker (RB who chose FSU over ND). Since then the kids get to milk the press for attention. I love the way Keith Marshall announced his school last year (UGA RB). He did it a month or more before signing day and walked up, put the only hat he had on and said like, 30 words and then sat down.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:15 PM
this is clearly a case of being told to look elsewhere more than choosing to look elsewhere.
Saint Self is the master of this. It seems like he lops off the bottom three scholarship players every year and nobody seams to notice.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:15 PM
OSU just picked up a 4 star JUCO. Probably take 2 or 3 more.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:16 PM
Was mentioned on NBCSports.com
But I guess the person who wrote this post would know about journalism.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:17 PM
Granted, but he’d still have more wins. And we’ve seen him win where he never once used a driver, so I think he’d stand a chance if he was sharp with his short game from week-to-week and didn’t rely on playing the par 5′s at a 16-under clip for the week.
I wish he’d play Colonial. I’d love to see him try and carve that place up.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:17 PM
Oh, the recruiting industry is terrible, and I’m totally part of the problem because I click their shit. Kids are told by coaches to hold from committing so other players are seen by other teams, so then a kid strings a team along and then chooses someone else the day before (or even on) signing day, leaving the team fucked (unless you’re Bama and you accept more commits than you can take and then tell kids to fuck off on signing day).
January 29th, 2013 at 4:17 PM
What position?
January 29th, 2013 at 4:17 PM
Mickelson lies about family members having cancer to get out of tournaments that don’t fit his game, don’t think we should be knocking Tiger for playing to his own strengths.

January 29th, 2013 at 4:20 PM

and can i knock rory too for building a huge practice facility and then going on a 5 week cut-stravaganza?
January 29th, 2013 at 4:20 PM
Hmm…never heard of that cat. I was just making sure it wasn’t the DT out of Kansas that definitely needs to sign with Georgia next week. Tunsil visiting Ole Miss is slightly worrisome, but everything I’ve read says he’ll be a Dawg, so that’s nice. If he signs he’ll be the highest rated recruit Mark Richt has ever landed. Higher than Stafford by a few spots. Dude is supposed to be an animal at LT.

lots of people Sawgrass and many of the bush league Dye designs. Over-reliance on water hazards is the crutch of poor architecture.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:28 PM
Ehh, it is what it is. Casual fans like it. The players should be able to deal with it. It’s like #16 in Phoenix.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:28 PM
I appreciate Sawgrass for what it is, a stadium course. Understand why players would dislike it though
January 29th, 2013 at 4:28 PM
They did the same thing with Greg Little, though it made more sense with a huge talent, not a plug in power-back.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:29 PM
It’s the Draft for college teams. It’s no different, or at least I don’t think it is. What happens on signing day is almost a direct link to who wins and who doesn’t. Plus the drama of players/coaches/”guardians”/schools being shady as fuck is entertaining.

The B10 is amazing. According to Rivals (probably not the best ranking site, but you can get a good picture) there are currently 54 players with a 5 or 4 star rating that have committed within the league. 31 of them are to Ohio State or Michigan. Yikes.

There are people I know who know the names of juniors, but I’ll hear those names mentioned over the summer for the first time. Again, everyone hates on recruiting until their school (cough**Michigan**cough) starts recruiting well. Then it’s a big deal.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:34 PM
coming from this site, this is rich
January 29th, 2013 at 4:35 PM
Funny thing is this could be the case, thought MICH has the top QB and top RB coming in. I think Hoke is a marginal coach compared to his recruiting prowess, but the dude is gonna have some good offenses because he’s stacked his OL. No clue about his DL recruiting, though.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:35 PM
They started their 2015 stuff a few weeks ago. But now people are just wainting for national signing day to be sure their school doesn’t lose anyone and maybe gets a suprise or two.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:37 PM

It’s creepy from the fans’ perspectives and slimy from the coaches’ perspectives. All in all pretty disgusting really if you ever get to see it up close.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:39 PM
he hates an overall great course because one hole is “gimmicky”? what a pussy. does he hate St. Andrews with its “gimmicky” 17th hole? or what about Augusta with its “gimmicky” 16th green?
January 29th, 2013 at 4:40 PM
Yup. This week is all about who will flip that isn’t supposed to and who won’t sign where they’re supposed to.
Damn. I had no clue. Last time I checked (been a while) he was a 5-star dude. I’m sure he’s still legit though.

January 29th, 2013 at 4:43 PM
Depends how you define “coach.” He was never a coordinator. He recruits well. He hires good assistants. Players bought in completely. Defensive line was quite solid last year considering personnel attrition. Don’t really care if he’s calling plays or not.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:47 PM
Sausages, politics and football recruiting.
– Otto von Bismarck
You forgot to add “always always always stay friendly with Russia.”
January 29th, 2013 at 4:47 PM
Sawgrass is a great course?
No. It is what it is. A Pete Dye course that they have a big tournament on and it ges manicured.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:48 PM
Which is why I said I think as a pure coach he’s run of the mill, but he can hire assistants and can certainly recruit. I wouldn’t put Hoke in the top 10 coaches in CFB, but he’s still damn good because talent acquisition is a big deal.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:49 PM
Any head coach who let that idiot QB play in the NEB game when Gardner was there the whole time can’t be that good. That’s basically what I’m saying.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:49 PM
So when Michigan suffers a sharp decline in a couple years, he’s Boob Chizik?
January 29th, 2013 at 4:50 PM
He’s not top 10, but as long a Greg Mattison is there as DC, he’ll be OK.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:50 PM
Just a FYI, nothing is set in stone until February 6th when a kid signs on the dotted line.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:54 PM
He has been working with a depleted roster the past two years. Talent/depth is going to get better two years from now.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:54 PM
Ooohhh….I like it, Ritty. I like it a lot. Derp Derp Hoke has a ring to it.
All of this. I don’t get too high or low until a signature is down. Kids are young and do crazy things often, so until they sign all bets are off. What’s funny is that once they sign they are on the bottom rung and get shit on. Such a wild swing in terms of leverage.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:57 PM
MICH is recruiting very well, and since all Hoke has to do is beat Ohio State, I can’t imagine they’re worse than 8-4 at any point.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:57 PM
Yeah, that’s what we said too.
January 29th, 2013 at 4:58 PM
LOLz.
January 29th, 2013 at 5:25 PM
LOL at this article… this is maybe the most misleading/under researched thing I have ever read. Who is Ty Duffy and how is even allowed to write something like this? First of all, it was widely known and documented when Notre Dame delayed in taking his commitment that he had academic concerns. ND laid out a “road map” for him with metrics he had to meet to qualify. Anyone with an account at 247sports, Rival, Scout, etc. knows this. ND contacted him weeks ago to let him know he wouldn’t be able to qualify. This was reported weeks before he “decommited” by every recruiting service out there. They then proceeded to take two better RB prospects in Folston and Bryant.
James then committed to Arizona State… something this article leaves out for some odd reason. Then Arizona State got a hold of his transcripts and even they said no way. So he’s now committed to Texas State and expected to be a non-qualifier headed to JUCO.
The funniest thing though has to be Ty Duffy saying “he has an offer from USC…”… are you serious? USC wouldn’t touch him with a 10 foot pole. He is nowhere close to having an offer from USC and never ever had an offer from USC in the first place.
January 29th, 2013 at 5:27 PM
Ole Miss isn’t looking too bad. Finally have a coach worth something. Family friend Christian Morgan signed with them. If I remember he was a four-star tight end. They just have a ridiculously hard conference.
On the bright side- I’ll be in Oxford a few times this fall and in Austin.
January 29th, 2013 at 6:02 PM
An actual Jamel James timeline that would’ve taken about 5 minutes to research:
7/28: James attempts to commit to ND, is held up as ND decides whether or not to take his commitment due to academics. He had never visited ND.
8/4: Listed officially as a Notre Dame commit, ND lays out an “academic road map” for him to qualify.
11/29: It’s reported by 247sports that he did not make enough academic improvement and that his grade issues are serious and he won’t likely qualify for ND… basically what the recruiting reporters/sites had been reporting for a long period of time, but now firmed up as he finished his 1st semester and got his grades.
12/6: ND coaches inform Jamel James that he won’t qualify and that they won’t be making a trip to see him.
12/19: James “opens up recruitment” and publicly says he is considering Arizona State, Washington, and Arkansas.
1/24: Tries to commit to Arizona State, they say “sorry, you won’t qualify.” He is out of real schools even talking to him at this point.
1/27: James commits to Texas State.
Put, you know, “recruit has bad academics, commits to school just starting football program but probably won’t meet DI minimums and will need to go to JUCO” isn’t a headline that will get clicks.
January 29th, 2013 at 7:00 PM
Nice “update” by Ty… he should change “message board chatter” to “documented posts/articles by recruiting analysts” and just admit this article is garbage. Especially the thing about being more shocking than Greenberry… people flipped out over that and were FLOORED that he flipped… everyone who follows recruiting at all knew James was gone weeks upon weeks before it was even announced… no “shock” at all. Examples of reporters who went on record about James and his grades long ago:
Reporter Jason Sapp 1/29: “As previously addressed – Notre Dame moved away from his recruitment after he wasn’t able to stay on the proper academic plan to qualify.”
Sapp again on 1/29 in response to if he is going to JUCO: “Based on what I was told last night out of Texas — he could be JUCO all the way.”
National reporter Brian Perroni who got the decommit story from his coach in December: “He was once a lost cause academically but now it is going to be close. He has the test score but needs to bring his GPA up.”
Before James publicly “moved on” from Sapp: “We can say with even stronger confidence today that he won’t be part of Notre Dame’s 2013 recruiting class with a spot no longer available for him in the group.”
Just pathetic how people don’t spend any time researching things before going for shock value in their story with things like “EVEN MORE SURPRISING THAN ONE OF THE MOST SURPRISING FLIPS EVER!” SMH.
January 29th, 2013 at 9:57 PM
James didn’t qualify academically for ND, and other schools. Had to go to Texas State. He didn’t choose State over ND, he had no choice. This “reporter” should get his facts straight. Congrats, you got views though you bum.
