Tennessee is $200 Million in Debt, Spends $21 Million Per Year Paying It Off
Sports Business Journal has some details about Tennessee’s athletic department finances. It is not healthy. The Vols are $200 million in debt, spend $21 million per year making debt payments and have less than $2 million available in reserves. Ouch.
Now, after staggering to losing football seasons in four of the last five years and seeing attendance drop to levels last seen in the 1970s, the Vols find themselves mired in more than $200 million of debt, the most in the SEC, with reserves of just $1.95 million, the least in the conference.
The athletic department spends a startling $21 million a year on debt payments, $13.5 million of which comes from the school’s stressed $99.5 million athletic budget and the rest from donations.
How did the finances get so bad? There are the five-percent “amusement tax,” the $7 million per year payment back to the university the department was making and the more than $11 million spent on coach buyouts (not including Dooley). The true culprits, though, appear to be football stink and over-expansion.
Tennessee has a new $50 million athletic facility and made $130 million in renovations to Neyland stadium. At the same time, average football attendance dipped below 90,000 in 2012, from more than 107,000 in 2000.
This explains why Tennessee reportedly held the line with Gruden about the assistant budget. The enhanced postseason revenue should help, though Tennessee needs to get good at football soon. No pressure, Butch.

He really knew how to make those Thundercunts win.

Watching this dumpster fire of a athletic department makes me smile. Tennessee, UGA and Florida can’t all be good at the same time, so I’d like to thank Tenn for taking one on the chin for the next decade.

Coop’d. Someone’s gotta be first in this category. Least they’re winning something.

UT is gonna need more than football money to pay that tab off.

It’s in the SBJ piece. Tennessee pays an extra 5-percent tax on all ticket revenue.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:03 PM
They also pay the Bear Tax and the Homer Tax.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:03 PM
5%? Seems steep.

OT – I’ve had a change of heart about the PGA Tour and twitter. Why would I ever want to read Stephanie Wei’s inane tweets when I can just watch live on the PGA’s website.

to make matters worse, Arkansas just stole a 6-10 295 lb. OL prospect from Tennessee today. suck it Vols.

I look forward to Tennessee giving up 50 to Oregon and watching P12, B12 and B10 fans (alongside Stewart Mandel) rip the SEC. Good times.
Ritty: Seems like it’s a foregone conclusion that y’all are landing Reuben Foster. Good luck with that.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:07 PM
Change ticket prices to $5, and then charge the balance of the previous ticket price to a halftime raffle. $60 ticket becomes $5 plus a $55 raffle entry.
Give away some non-weak gear, sideline passes, a car from a local dealership…just saved Tennessee $7M/year in amusement tax.

So is KJentucky ahead of UT in football yet? It’s gonna happen, right?
January 28th, 2013 at 3:08 PM
Hopefully they don’t have any cash laying around to buy Vonn Bell and Trey Johnson.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:08 PM
Does it? I’d love to have him but he kind of seems like the next Tray Blackmon to me. Murders everything that moves in high school but doesn’t turn the corner in college.

Would be curious on perspective.
What do the finances look like for other SEC programs?
Other “elite” football schools?
Huge black hole is this story.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:11 PM
So, does this mean Tennessee is moving to the Big 10?
January 28th, 2013 at 3:11 PM
Yeah. Unless something crazy happens he’s all Auburn. He’s the classic want-him-but-don’t-want-his-issues recruit.
I was pissed UGA cancelled its series with Oregon. Autzen in a bucket list event for me.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:11 PM
If they can keep poaching that talent from Pelini and Nebraska, maybe just maybe.

someone commnted yesterday that kentucky stole a 40star from nebraska. huskerdawg, wtf? if there’s no more to the story, that’s a low point no?

/ Barista Taguchi?
January 28th, 2013 at 3:13 PM
UGA made $20 million last year I believe. Spent 60 and brought in 80 (or something along those lines). I’m pretty sure Louisville is the most profitable school. They don’t bring in the most (Texas does so by a mile) but they have the highest net gain I believe.

Huge black hole is this story.
Truly this story is a region of spacetime from which gravity prevents anything, including light, from escaping.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:14 PM
Woof. Don’t even get me started on that shit. Pelini is so fucking terrible as a recruiter. He simply doesn’t get that you have to kiss ass for 18 months leading up to signing day before you treat them like a slave.
Stoops sold him big time and played up the playing in the SEC/closer to home factor I think. It helps when you can use Pelini being nuts and tied to every job against him. I really want him gone.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:16 PM

I believe he was quoting one Abraham J. Simpson.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:17 PM
For PeerLess or anybody else with Vol ties – is the AD gonna be in continual hot water over this? Is this level of debt a fire-able offense?
I wonder what he tells the board of regents regarding getting out of debt. His “get well” plan must be a doozy.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:18 PM
Stoops v. Pelini will be interesting for Youngstown recruiting. Since PSU’s no longer a player, there’s plenty of talent there (if OSU doesn’t get it all).

/MikeNYC logic
January 28th, 2013 at 3:20 PM
If by interesting you mean hilarious I’m with you. Stoops will run circles around Pelini.
He’s a relative new AD. I think Mike Hamilton is the one who created the dumpster fire and then left to do charity work (I shit you not).
January 28th, 2013 at 3:22 PM
Yeah, but Florida is kicking in a huge amount in return for a promise from Louisville that they’ll never meet on the football field again.

I had a blast at the Colorado-UGA game. I plan on going to LSU for the 2014 UGA game and would like to get up to Clemson for this season’s opener, but I doubt that’ll happen.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:30 PM
As far as fire-able, I wouldn’t know that. He’s a new guy, so the mess isn’t all his doing. Hamilton was a good dude, not a good AD. This story, or a variation of it, came out a month or so ago and isn’t all surprising. The facilities on campus for athletics are unreal, as is Neyland. We shall see. I dont think Hart or Jimmy Cheek will last long
January 28th, 2013 at 3:30 PM
/nevermind. Found it on cbssports.com
January 28th, 2013 at 3:33 PM
I’ve heard good and bad about LSU. I went in ’99, and with it being an early game the tailgating wasn’t great. from everything I’ve heard the fans outside are cool and are quick to offer booze and food, it’s once you get in where they turn into dicks. the year I went LSU beat Arkansas’s ass, so it was pretty brutal.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:34 PM
Cheek is getting more heat than Hart at the moment. I think most Vol fans (not the crazy message boarders) are just so numb to the past 5 years, they don’t really have a solid opinion on leadership, other than what’s transparent. We just want mommy or daddy to make the pain go away.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:34 PM
along with tea and crumpets with Duffy.
get yaself an Hogs pocket square and don’t forget to lift the pinkie
January 28th, 2013 at 3:35 PM
I went to Auburn @ LSU in ’11. It was fun. Made a point to walk through some of the more hardcore LSU tailgates wearing my orange and blue bow tie. There are idiots who can say little else than F you, etc., but for the most part, it was a blast.
Inside the stadium, we ran into some guys who got in our face but the SEC go-to line of “what year did you graduate?” pretty much stopped them in their tracks.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:35 PM
No and no. Having a large debt to service actually helps fundraising, and it shows the administration is continually working to improve programs and facilities. For the last year available, the AD posted a $4 million loss, and that’s after returning $6 million to the university. The debt amount isn’t the big problem, it’s the amount they’re paying coaches that no longer coach there. That’s money down the drain.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:37 PM
Haven’t been to a game in F’ville since I was 10. Really need to get back up there soon.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:39 PM
Damn. Tiger. Sweet bunker shot. One leg in bunker.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:43 PM
I bet this line is great with Bama fans.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:44 PM
if you haven’t been in that long you should really try to make it. the whole gameday atmosphere has improved 10 fold in the past 10-15 years, and should only continue to get better, unless the team goes to the crapper for the next 5 years.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:44 PM
Not really. They don’t understand the irony.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:47 PM
Huskerdawg, I am sure that your reasoning is pure (must be from south O), but I don’t think it is fair that you get to have two teams, especially when one is on the upswing and the other is one Abdullah fumble away from getting beaten at home by MSU and Northwestetn next year.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:48 PM
As an LSU alum, let me say this: many, many LSU fans are drunken assholes. Especially the ones who did not attend LSU because they could not register the required ACT score of 7 or higher.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:49 PM
It’s just a pain in the ass to get there from here. Probably a 9 hour drive. I’ve been to an away game the last three years in a row but will probably use my one football trip to go back to Auburn since I have season tickets that I haven’t used since 2010.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:53 PM
yeah, getting to Fayetteville can be a pain in the ass, especially if you can’t fly direct. I love going to Auburn, I know a bunch of people down there and I’ve been to 2 games down there, always good times.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:57 PM
Born in Nebraska, educated in Georgia. I used to say I was a bigger NEB fan, but the last 5 years or so it’s swung the other way. Graduating and being around all-things UGA has a lot to do with that. I also happen to hate Pelini, no matter how much better he is than terrible Callahan.
January 28th, 2013 at 4:00 PM
how much better he is than terrible Callahan.
forgot about the callahan sabotage story. could have been a blockbuster and how it’s nowhere. same with te’o
January 28th, 2013 at 4:06 PM
Dig it.
Howeva, the failed CPA in me thinks “attendance is trending down. (Maybe) income is trending down. Debt is high.”
Even when the former coaches come off the books, don’t they still need income to trend up, however slightly?
January 28th, 2013 at 5:06 PM
Actually, I said pretty much the opposite if you are able to discern sarcasm.
/I second everything Peerless said. Its very close to being beyond repair.
