Ballin’: Could the Lakers and Celtics Miss the Playoffs?
LA Clippers 96, Portland 83: Still no Chris Paul, but this time it didn’t matter because Blake Griffin (23 points, nine rebounds) got help from the bench (36 points) and the Paper Clips crept within 1.5 games of the Thunder for the 2nd spot in the West. Quietly, San Antonio has surged ahead of both of them, though nobody fears the Spurs in the postseason.
Detroit 104, Orlando 102: If you’re the Magic, how thrilled are you with Nikola Vucevic, whom you acquired in the Dwight Howard trade? The former USC center is now 3rd in the NBA in rebounding, and went for 12 points and 17 rebounds against the Pistons. He’s one of the best bargains in the league ($1.7 million this year; $1.8 next year, then a team option). JJ Redick and his $6 million expiring deal has to be the most enticing player as we approach the trade deadline. Redick scored 31 in the loss, and in a contract year, is playing way above the rim. The Magic have lost 16 of 18.
New York 106, Atlanta 104: Melo dropped 42 (on 28 shots), JR Smith and Amare each added 18, and Raymond Felton played much better in his second game back (12 points, 10 assists) as the Knicks closed within 1.5 games of Miami in the East.
Dallas 110, Phoenix 95: Remember how OJ Mayo was tearing it up in November for the lottery-bound Mavericks, shooting 50 percent from deep? Reality has set in: 31 percent from beyond-the-arc this month. They’re hurtling inexorably toward the 35 wins I predicted in July.
New Orleans 91, Memphis 83: How do you collapse, at home, against the lowly Pelicans? Mike Conley’s ankle injury didn’t help. But go ahead and fire up those Rudy Gay-for-Paul Pierce trade talks. You know you want to. Remember Washington guard Tony Wroten? We loved his potential back before the draft and here he is splitting the defense and dropping a no-look pass to Darrell Arthur. Wouldn’t surprise me if Wroten turned into a valuable Eric Bledsoe-type contributor in the postseason.
LA Lakers 105, Oklahoma City 96: Unselfish Kobe put on a show – 21 points, 14 assists, nine rebounds – and the Lakers won their second in a row. Dwight Howard only shot 2-of-10 from the line, but Metta World Peace (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Pau Gasol (16 points) had solid games supporting Kobe. This was one of those games that you watched and thought, “of course the Lakers can win the title!” Reminder: They’re 19-25. Futuristic Russell Westbrook scored 17 points, had 13 assists and nine rebounds … but shot 6-for-22. Also, he didn’t like it when Kobe pushed him.

Both games with surprising outcomes. Its still going to be yesterdays losers in the finals though. Sorry to ruin the suspense.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:02 AM
no Clippers, liquor?
And what about the Knicks, who are 2-0 vs. Miami with two wins by 20+
January 28th, 2013 at 11:03 AM
And what about the Knicks, who are 2-0 vs. Miami with two wins by 20+
now where did i put that regular season trophy? it’s around here somewhere
January 28th, 2013 at 11:08 AM
You mean the Bulls won’t win it again this year? Thank god.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:12 AM
Knicks won’t make it past Chicago in the 2nd round.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:14 AM
Woodson’s determined to prove everyone wrong about playing the big 3 together. Played them the entire 4th but then takes Chandler out for the last offensive possession and then Amare out for the last defensive possession.
He doesn’t believe in it when the pushed to the brink. So why do it at all…
January 28th, 2013 at 11:14 AM
Why? I’d take them in a playoff series over anyone in the West except OKC.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:16 AM
the heat and thunder screwed me, but creigh, atlanta and michigan made it a winning day!
peppiness is not natural to me
January 28th, 2013 at 11:17 AM
The same Chicago team that has been exposed in the playoffs last 2 years? And who knows about Rose.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:18 AM
Ya’ll keep sleeping on the Spurs despite having the best record and having been on two games from the Finals last year.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:19 AM
They gave the Heat a tough series that was much closer than the outcome 2 years ago. Wouldn’t necessarily call that exposed. And I can’t believe you would even cite last year’s result as an example of getting “exposed”.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:19 AM
No. Its the Clippers, what else needs to be said.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:20 AM
Any reasoning to support this idea? Seems like the thing a casual fan who only likes to see dunks and highlights would say.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:24 AM
Using this logic the Knicks have won one playoff game in the past decade so that should put an end to the idea of them being a threat in postseason
January 28th, 2013 at 11:25 AM
Say what you want, but if Nash is finally healthy, Kobe isn’t jacking up 30 shots, and Gasol isn’t taking 25 footers all night, they could do it. Do we really have that much faith in Houston and/or Utah?
Plus, Lakers v. Spurs or OKC in Round 1 would just be the best thing ever.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:25 AM
Yeah. No one should fear a team who swept through the playoffs last year only to meet an OKC team that featured James Harden in the clutch. What’s that you say? Harden got traded? Oh.
But wait, surely the Spurs have gotten worse with age. I’m sure that their defense has fallen…they’re fourth in defensive rating? Shit.
But they have horrible ratings. Yeah, that’s it. They’re boring. Who the fuck wants to watch the Spurs.
/typical Big Lead logic
January 28th, 2013 at 11:25 AM
I guarantee you every team/coach/GM fears the Spurs in the postseason.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:27 AM
They won Game 1 by double digits, and then had to play the rest of the series without their superstar PG. CHI wins that series 4-1 or 4-2 with Rose.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:30 AM
You must have hit Submit before you finished.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:31 AM
While I’m a bit shocked by this, the Bulls are a much better team this year (excluding Rose of course). Paxson has said they hope their deadline move will be to bring Rose back into the mix slowly. They’re making all the right moves so far this season, IMO.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:33 AM
I liked last year’s depth better, that Taj Gibson contract looks a little gross already
January 28th, 2013 at 11:33 AM
Noah also blew his ankle in Game 3. Philadelphia played well to close them out, but the Bulls were definitely missing two big pieces to the puzzle.
Would enjoy seeing a Knicks-Bulls postseason series because it would be entertaining. Whoever wins is still going down to Miami on the road to the Finals. Not sure there’s been a bigger lock to win the East since the late 90s Bulls teams.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:35 AM
True, but that depth doesn’t mean much in the playoffs. I love the way Butler has played, and I like the factors of Nate Robinson and Belinelli. You’re right about Gibson though. Should we have paid Asik instead?
January 28th, 2013 at 11:35 AM
They also struggled to beat a crappy Pacers team(I think they were under .500) and Hawks team that year. And last year, can’t lose to that god awful sixers team, even without Rose.
My point being, lets not make them into some unbeatable powerhouse that they never were.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:36 AM
Congrats on defeating that straw man
January 28th, 2013 at 11:36 AM
Pelijazz doin’ work. Sorry, SROD.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:37 AM
Really? He’s been less productive this year but I think that’s partially due to Boozer’s impact this season. Also, Jo’s been more involved on the offensive end as well. Still like Taj off the bench as the leader of that 2nd unit. His versatility defensively allows him to check the 3, 4 or 5.
I think if Jo can evolve offensively under Thibs, Taj should be able to over the course of his current deal.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:37 AM
Someone claimed they would beat the Knicks in the playoffs and you interpret this as “Bulls are an unbeatable powerhouse”. Yikes.
I assure you that no one thinks this.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:37 AM
Chicago, who do you think plays more minutes once Rose is back, Hinrich or Nate?
January 28th, 2013 at 11:38 AM
Also, no Austin Rivers update?
January 28th, 2013 at 11:39 AM
The Spurs are like Jason Voorhees, in that they never stay dead, they always come back on you when you least expect them and they’ve had the same number of sequels with the same number of kills.
How do you collapse, at home, against the lowly Pelicans?
Only 4 games back of the Lakers….
January 28th, 2013 at 11:39 AM
Hinrich. he’s thibs kind of player
January 28th, 2013 at 11:39 AM
Hinrich, I have to imagine the Nate Robinson Experience drives Thibs to the brink of insanity
So do I, just not at $10M per year
January 28th, 2013 at 11:39 AM
My guess is it will depend on the matchup and whether or not the second unit needs offense of defense.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:40 AM
Poison pill. Omer is a nice piece, but he wasn’t worth the offer sheet that Houston laid out for him. I’ll take 5 years more of Taj instead of 3 of Omer. Especially that $15M in year 3.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:40 AM
21 min 2-4 FG (1-2 3pt) 1-4 FT 6 pts 1 ast 1 TO
January 28th, 2013 at 11:41 AM
My point being, lets not make them into some unbeatable powerhouse that they never were.
This is what you are referring to:
The Knicks won’t make it past Chicago in the 2nd round.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:42 AM
Two ways OKC misses the finals:
1. Injury
2. Westbrook single handedly loses two games in a series
January 28th, 2013 at 11:43 AM
scrolled up too late. looks like we all agree that curtis is silly
January 28th, 2013 at 11:44 AM
Close Talker, Woodson knows they’re going to have to get some minutes together. It’s a mathematical inevitability. Not sure I believe Woodson is as committed to it as he’s represented in interviews, etc.
This is the time to experiment
January 28th, 2013 at 11:45 AM
Because that is the lineup he will need in order for the Knicks to have any chance of winning in the postseason, especially if he can’t count on Rasheed and Camby coming back. STAT’s defensive awareness is atrocious, so you need Chandler out there to somewhat clean up that mess. Tehy look like as a trio, they do have the ability to gel offensively. The Bulls scare me as a matchup for the Knicks more than the Heat because depth in the post. For that reason, the Knicks will need those 3 to play together.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:45 AM
Re: The Bulls, my main bitch is they still don’t have any elite player to pair with Rose. I’m tired of hearing that Taj or Noah will turn into that player. I don’t see it happening, and I don’t see them winning a championship with Rose and a bunch of good, but not elite, players.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:47 AM

Right now, they would play Utah in the first round and then either Memphis or the Clippers. Those 3 teams, while not better than the Thunder, would give them tough fights in each series. They would get to San Antonio in the WCF carrying lots of hurt and worn out.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:48 AM
The Bulls scare me as a matchup for the Knicks more than the Heat because depth in the post.
explain please. to me, the heat in a series brush off the knicks, 20-point regular season losses or no
January 28th, 2013 at 11:48 AM
Deng isn’t elite, but he is pretty fucking good.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:49 AM
Heat will turn up the defensive intensity big time in the playoffs. The court will shrink in the half court as a result. Battier, Allen, Wade, Lebron, Bosh will be a terrifying unit. Heat are very much an effort rebounding team too, so that should change come playoffs.
Also, Wade will be back on an HGH cycle
January 28th, 2013 at 11:51 AM
Deng isn’t elite, but he is pretty fucking good.
so is noah and boozer has stepped up this season. i feel bad writing that second part. will he relax when rose comes back? meaning, is he content to let someone else shoulder a team?
January 28th, 2013 at 11:52 AM
BFF, I don’t see how Spurs could stop OKC. No athleticism at the big spots to limit KD’s paint scoring. Jackson and Leonard should be their top defenders, but both would likely be guarding KD, so not sure they can handle Westbrook either. Clips are the toughest Thunder matchup IMO. Memphis could cause problems too
January 28th, 2013 at 11:53 AM
I agree. Not saying some of the guys they have (including Deng) aren’t nice players. I just believe it takes at least 2 elite players to win a championship.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:53 AM
Thanks, kazzy, it just ain’t Ballin’ if Austin isn’t getting belittled.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:53 AM
Re: The Bulls, my main bitch is they still don’t have any elite player to pair with Rose. I’m tired of hearing that Taj or Noah will turn into that player. I don’t see it happening, and I don’t see them winning a championship with Rose and a bunch of good, but not elite, players.
Any other elite player would want the ball as much as Rose. Even if you paired him up with Dwight Howard, he’d want Rose to pass it to him in the low post — and Rose isn’t (and shouldn’t) defer to anyone else.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:54 AM
04 Pistons showed that isn’t necessarily true. Bulls have a lot of similarities to that team
January 28th, 2013 at 11:55 AM
My style is impetuous, my defense is impregnable, I want his heart, I wanna eat his children, praise be to allah!
I disagree. Amare looks good on offense but I’d rather he be the focus of the 2nd unit. You can easily stagger the 3 so Amare’s 20-25 min is mostly without without the other 2.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:57 AM
he’d want Rose to pass it to him in the low post — and Rose isn’t (and shouldn’t) defer to anyone else.
rose mostly gets props around here for not directly campaigning for help/soliciting when FA are available. it’s easier to believe it’s not his personality, bc it’s hard to believe it’s bc he doesn;t want to share the spotlight. dude seems genuine about anything to win
January 28th, 2013 at 11:57 AM
Hopefully.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:58 AM
I think he needs more mins than that. Close to 30
January 28th, 2013 at 11:58 AM

I agree. In a 1-game or just an even, everyone’s rested, 7-game series, OKC beats San Antonio 4-2. Problem is how they get to that series. If you go through Houston and Golden State, it’s considerably easier than going through Memphis and the Clippers. It’s why getting that #1 seed is going to be key.
KD battling Marc Gasol and Z-Bo will take a lot out of him. Westbrook going up against Conley and then having to battle CP3 will take a lot out of him.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:59 AM
That’s a rare example.
January 28th, 2013 at 12:00 PM
angry, I’m a lot higher on Noah than you appear to be. I’d argue he is an elite center, but only because this era is devoid of quality centers. He has the ability to dominate Miami in the paint
January 28th, 2013 at 12:00 PM
The Cavs have won three in a row. If tha contiues they’ll end the season with 40 straight wins.
January 28th, 2013 at 12:01 PM
Any other elite player would want the ball as much as Rose. Even if you paired him up with Dwight Howard, he’d want Rose to pass it to him in the low post — and Rose isn’t (and shouldn’t) defer to anyone else.January 28th, 2013 at 12:01 PM
There were key periods in both games this year that the Heat attempted to turn on the defensive intensity, and the Knicks withstood it and eventually built their lead. The Knicks have a much better point guard rotation this year as opposed to last. In addition, once you withstand the defensive rush, you have the advantage over the Heat on the boards and that’s what kills them. The biggest thing that can hurt the Knicks in a series against the Heat is LeBron or Wade getting one of the 18-20 free throw attempt games. With the Bulls, Deng is healthy, and Noah has turned into a legit shotmaker. Boozer is also playing better, and they will have a rebounding advantage over either the Heat or the Knicks. With the addition of Rose coming back close to his level and the improvement of Noah, the Bulls can be a problem.
January 28th, 2013 at 12:02 PM
It is. Similar though, from personnel to coaching. The league is also better overall now, but that team should give Bulls fans some hope IMO
January 28th, 2013 at 12:06 PM
Like holding the other team scoreless for 4 minutes?
January 28th, 2013 at 12:06 PM
thanks darrell
angry, #61 was FUBAR format wise
noah is so damn energetic. most athletic center, with chandler and ibaka?
January 28th, 2013 at 12:07 PM
Lebron should have a field day against the Knicks. Bosh can pull Chandler from the hoop, and the Knicks don’t have a decent option to put on Lebron. Shumpert is probably the most capable rotation guy, but he’s 6’5″. This is why I advocate acquiring a SF who defends and makes open threes
January 28th, 2013 at 12:08 PM
McGee, Jordan. Unless there’s a caveat of being good at basketball
January 28th, 2013 at 12:08 PM
rose mostly gets props around here for not directly campaigning for help/soliciting when FA are available. it’s easier to believe it’s not his personality, bc it’s hard to believe it’s bc he doesn;t want to share the spotlight. dude seems genuine about anything to win
It’s all about what kind of partner you get for him. If he was paired up with Kevin Durant, they’d be the best team in the league. Pair him with Melo and he might swing at him. It’s all about personalities.
I think history tells us that two elite players can coexist and win championships. Doesn’t happen every time but more often than not, I believe.
That’s where you need the right kind of coaching AKA where Phil Jackson made his millions.
January 28th, 2013 at 12:09 PM
Forgot. Drummond is the most athletic center
January 28th, 2013 at 12:10 PM
Pair him with Westbrook, and he’ll get 5 shots too few/game
January 28th, 2013 at 12:15 PM
trojans, i’d say hoops skills are required for my category
January 28th, 2013 at 12:22 PM
Why would they put Chandler on Bosh for that to happen? The Knicks played decent defense on LeBron in the Playoffs last year, of course minus the free throw attempts. They held him to 40 something percent shooting. They’ll throw a rotation at him.
January 28th, 2013 at 12:23 PM
If the typical lineup is Chalmers, Wade, Battier, Lebron, Bosh (or something like that) what choice do NYK have? Probably going to need to sprinkle some zone in
January 28th, 2013 at 12:27 PM
Chandler could guard Haslem, but I assume his mins will be down (only plays 20 anyway) in the series for that specific reason
January 28th, 2013 at 12:31 PM
The Knicks play a switching defense. If Bosh were to consistently float outside, Chandler would wind up switching with whoever is guarding the man looking to post.
January 28th, 2013 at 12:35 PM
that lineup would get killed on the boards.
January 28th, 2013 at 12:51 PM
Woodson has stated that he doesn’t see Amar’e being anymore than a 30 minute a game player for the rest of his career anyway, so the stagger is exactly how this will all work out. But, at the end of a close game, I would definitely want him on the floor next to Chandler, of course unless Rasheed comes back, which doesn’t look likely.
January 28th, 2013 at 12:51 PM
and the second best player on the ’11 Mavs was what, Chandler or Terry?
January 28th, 2013 at 2:08 PM
Redick scored 31 in the loss, and in a contract year, is playing way above the rim.
I thought playing “above the rim” was a literal expression.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:09 PM
Good news: Grizzlies made Ballin’.
Bad news: Grizzlies made Ballin’ because they lost.
Good news: the EIC floated a way to get rid of Rudy Gay.
Bad news: that way would result in getting Pierce in return. Yeesh.
