After the game Kyrie said that B Scott told him to go for the win. Which means he knew he was shooting that shot the whole time. So while I agree it was extra deep, he also shot it in perfect rhythm, under control, all squared up . Given that, maybe it was only 35% instead of 40%. That is still a much better chance of victory than the joint probability of making a two (55%, let’s say) and winning in over time (45%, let’s say).

Kyrie shoots 40% from deep. Suppose he has a 50% chance of making a 2 point shot in that situation with the whole defense keying on him. Under that assumption, the Cavs would need have better than an 80% chance to win in OT for the 2-point shot to be a “better” shot than the 3 point one. Being on the road against a deeper team, I would put the Cavs shot in OT at 45%. Given all of that, taking a 3 pointer was by the best strategy for maximizing the probability of winning.

In short, NOT bad shot selection at all. Just the opposite.
