We’ve often seen biological fathers attempt to reunite with their sons, but I can’t remember a story where a mother was attempting to connect with a high-profile athlete. Heidi Russo gave the current 49ers’ starting QB up for adoption when she was 19 years old. She says it was the hardest decision she’s ever made.

“I knew I couldn’t have provided my son the kind of life he deserved when I became pregnant,” said Russo. “I had him for about six weeks before putting him up for adoption, and what a blessing it was to have Teresa and Rick Kaepernick be able to step up and raise Colin.”

Russo, who currently resides in Colorado with her two sons, recently gave an interview to Fox 31 Denver. She says that Kaepernick’s new found fame is not her motivation to begin a relationship with her son. Russo made several attempts to contact her son while he played at the University of Nevada.

Throughout the season, Heidi has tweeted words of encouragement to her biological son.

It’s easy to be cynical about a parent coming out of the woodwork when their child makes it big. However, this doesn’t appear to be the case. Let’s hope for a happy ending.
