Tiger Woods’ Eagle Out of the Bunker at the Farmers Insurance Open
All, Golf, Tiger Woods January 25th. 2013, 1:55pm
Tiger Woods back? Chill out. Tiger eagled the 6th hole at the Farmers Insurance Open yesterday. Don’t get too excited. The announcer call the shot “make-able” and then the ball went in the hole. Tiger finished the first round at -4, just three shots back of the leaders.

It’s really weird to see this for me. He’s a total Eddie Haskell-type. One of my co-worker’s sons is really good friends with him. He’s a very “yes, ma’am” type of kid outside of football.
January 25th, 2013 at 2:04 PM
I’m sure if Stan Musial shot an Eagle out of the bunker, we wouldn’t get a post out of it.

May have been discussed before, but everybody should go to the WGC at Firestone and watch the golfers drive on 16. It’s like howitzers going off.
January 25th, 2013 at 2:42 PM
he hit his second shot in the middle of a crowd (OB i think) and i stopped to write some notes and was in his way. was one of those ‘please move’ touches
but it burned
January 25th, 2013 at 2:42 PM
nino…refreshed myself on your comments just now and youre dead on with what it’s like watching tiger esp in regards to the crowd. tho when he’d mutter ‘thanks’ to some comment, did you notice the look in his eye that said “you don’t have anything better to do than this, peon?” it’s quite palpable. always loved seeing that.
the range is mawney…it’s almost more impressive to watch them practice than play.

I was at the US open in Oakmont a few years back. I know it’s one of the hardest courses out there, but my goodness was I amazed at how many golfers were hacking it up. My confidence soared the next round I played.
January 25th, 2013 at 2:44 PM
If you’re at a tourney, you want to find a good hole to watch. You just can’t trudge around in Tiger’s group all day. You can, it just gets brutal after a few holes. I usually find a good early group, follow them around, then in the afternoon hit a few hot spots where you can see some good things, like a fairway on reachable par 5.

January 25th, 2013 at 2:45 PM
I favor watching a lesser group. Better access and the difference between a top and mediocre pro is minimal
January 25th, 2013 at 2:46 PM
im fairly positive i wouldnt break 100 there.
January 25th, 2013 at 2:46 PM
Tiger’s great, but almost no crowd interaction and his focus actually makes him less fun to watch. Phil’s great to watch.
Highly recommend spending the cash (if you can) and going to see a Ryder Cup or even a Presidents Cup. The atmosphere at the Ryder cup this past year is the best I’ve seen at any sporting event, and that includes a Super Bowl. And the guys actually get fired up and play to the crowd. Bubba would not even tee off until the crwd was in a frenzy. Just great.

This. You’ll definitely see a few hacked shots. Shots in the woods, etc. One friend used to say the key to scoring is being able to play good golf from bad places.
January 25th, 2013 at 2:47 PM
couldnt disagree more.
the difference between paddy harrington tee-to-green and sergio, adam scott or davis love III was quite drastic. they get there in the same number of shots, but there’s definitely a noticeable difference.
January 25th, 2013 at 2:47 PM
Normal conditions, sub 100 no problem. Open conditions, not a chance
January 25th, 2013 at 2:48 PM
Obviously not in a US Open setup, but on a normal day with a caddie, you would. Best time I’ve ever had playing golf, even stuck in the church pews.
January 25th, 2013 at 2:48 PM
im fairly positive i wouldnt break 100 there.
What if you treated the par 4′s as par 5′s and just went hybrid,iron-wedge into every hole. You’d need to gut out 4 pars.
January 25th, 2013 at 2:49 PM
lol…you’ve heard the quote that oakmont’s the only course where they make it easier from how the members play it, right? just think it’s funny in context.
January 25th, 2013 at 2:50 PM
ive been thinking about it…i probably would break 100 there. my shortgame and putting are my strongest parts of the game and there’s not a lot of water or forced carries.
now pebble? that one’s a lil trickier…

can’t remember why but the 6yo boy is fascinated with frostbite. so i explained it and showed him pics. ugh

Golf tourney attendance are about 30% relaxation, 50% people-watching and 20% golf. And that’s being generous to the golf. And I’m a golf junkie.
January 25th, 2013 at 2:53 PM

If you can hit the fairway with a hybrid EVERY time. If you don’t drop any four putts. Could be tough.

so stylistically? because the goal is number of shots right?
January 25th, 2013 at 2:55 PM
dude, pit and cle are some serious golf cities…we don’t have jokey courses round here. i know exactly what you mean, cuz we get the rolling hills too, only every god damned narrow ass fairway is lined with fucking trees.
January 25th, 2013 at 2:56 PM
exactly. pretty the event im thinking about, of the guys mentioned, paddy was actually the only one in contention. think tortise/hare.

January 25th, 2013 at 2:58 PM
I would highly recommend the 16th hole at the Phoenix Open too. Great people watching. Doesnt seem as rowdy as it used to be. The Phoenix Open is one big party with a golf tournament going on around it.
January 25th, 2013 at 2:59 PM
Don’t they do $1 beers there, or something?
January 25th, 2013 at 2:59 PM
Is it the Phoenix Open that has the loud music and party holes?
January 25th, 2013 at 3:00 PM
People-watching at the Waste Management Open is fun. Dumb, drunk broads trying to walk around on the grass wearing heels.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:00 PM
Hardest thing about those tour courses IMO is all the uneven lies. I can handle the hard and fast conditions and I feel I have enough creativit and poise to putt within reason, but hitting 165 to a guarded green with the gof ball 6 inches below my feet, that’s where it goes awry.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:04 PM
depends on the geography…you aint seein those in florida or arizona or socal.
the one constant is length. you walk firestone, see how narrow it is and how long the rough is and it seems bad enough until you start walking from the teebox to where the shots landed…it’s intimidating as shit.
i play from the back tees every round…longest course i played was 7,100 and change. that’s a pitch and putt for these guys.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:05 PM
and firestone plays as a par 70 (!)…those two par 5′s taken off really hurt scoring chances.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:07 PM
I was supposed to go to that tournament this year, with a pass to a sponsor tent. then real life got in the way. dammit.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:08 PM
No, people just drink alot and the 16th has this rep as the “party hole”. Bunch of college students, and the drunk broads walking around mentioned earlier.
Famous for Tiger’s hole in one many moons ago.

I miss the 17th at the Buick Open in Flint.
//Fuck you Greenbrier.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:11 PM
Florida golf is flat, flat, flat. I played a course that used to have a PGA event there while there was water and sand everywhere, there wasn’t a speedbump in the fairways. Doral’s near the Miami airport and same holds true there – not a hill in sight.
Come north and it’s a whole different animal.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:12 PM
You see the tour guys hit a spot about 285-290 out and the ball dies there – target golf. I can hit it 290 but need a perfectly exectured draw. They have easy distance. That’s what cracks me up. Sure, on some par 5′s they’ll get after it and turn it over but it’s hilarious how they can throw darts with the driver.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:14 PM
Tiger is shredding the North course btw. 5 under in his last 4 holes. Of course 2 of them are par 5′s.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:15 PM
That Golf Digest interview with Luke List – what a fratboy asshole he came of sounding like. I guess he avg’d 324 (? 342 ?) on the Nationwide last year. I saw he shot -4 yesteray. I’m already rooting against him.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:17 PM
With thechnology, the driver’s just another club to set up the next shot, which is why it’s so suprising to see some of the bad mishits.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:17 PM
Dollar beers? Recipe for disastah
January 25th, 2013 at 3:18 PM
All right Tiger. And that List guy is now in 3rd. Seriously, fuck this fratboy trash. Imminently despisable.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:18 PM
That’s skill set, not quality. Paddy has been the best of the bunch. I’m with you on the ball striker front
Didn’t know that. In fact, it sounds so ridiculous that I’m skeptical. If true, what kind of masochist jackass would want that as their home course? I’m all for tough, but 110 on the regular is no fun
January 25th, 2013 at 3:25 PM
Harris English is on the leaderboard again. He’s sounds and looks first team all Silver Spoon but I really like his game. Presently he’s like a young American Lee Westwood.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:28 PM
Tiger is shredding the North course btw
Just looked at his card – 4 birds in a row. He got to start on 10 so he gets to get into his round a bit before the par 5 18th and par 5 1st back to back.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:42 PM
obviously, im skeptical too, but USGA guys say they dont have to do too many tweaks to make it US Open worthy…that alone says a TON.
also, obviously dont know much about the membership, but ive heard there’s quite a bit of legit players there. if you’re a legit scratch or better golfer, im sure being an oakmont member is as close as it gets to heaven.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:47 PM
I watched him play my course when he tied for second at our Nationwide/Web.com event two years ago. Dude hits it a freaking ton. That was also right after he talked about how low the Nationwide guys go on a weekly basis and that there were a handful of them that could fill up the PGA leaderboards. He caught hell for it but he wasn’t far off.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:49 PM
harris english will be a top 50 player by the end of this year. i dont think im really going out on a limb that far either…not gonna look up the stats, but pretty sure he had the worst sunday scoring average on Tour last year. but he was a rookie in contention a lot…he’ll get there. he’s got oodles of talent.
January 25th, 2013 at 3:51 PM
In the late 70′s, Oakmount’s membership was seeing it’s old guard retire and they had to decide how to treat the course. They didn’t want to start making it easy. So they decided to go out and tell their members they’d be hiring some young college guys at their day jobs. They then went and recruited good young college golfers graduating, and that kept their membership capable with these new junior members.
They have a cigar box where members put $5 each round and if they can par their 4 really tough par 4′s, you get what’s in the box. Payout is routinely $600-$2000. They get off on being really tough.
It’s mainly how there’s hard Allegheny clay righr below the turf that keeps the grens hard all the time. The grens were built early 20th century and have a 9 strain hybrid that somehow lets it be cut low and doesnt die in the summer heat. They haven’t been able to replicate it elsewhere, yet.

Haven’t seen much, but that’s a hell of a compliment. My favorite “young” American player is Michael Thompson, if he still counts. Think his mentality/personality lends itself to staying power just as much as his game

Matt Damon took over Jimmy Kimmel Live last night

January 25th, 2013 at 4:04 PM
Alotian is pretty awesome from what I’ve heard – is that public or private? IIRC Carl Jackson, the caddie for Ben Crenshaw at the Masters, started the caddie program there. I think a member of Augusta had that built?
January 25th, 2013 at 4:05 PM
Stayed in a house on 18 last year before our round (which was fucking ridiculous) and the member who set up the outing up pretty much verified all of this.
On another note, one guy in our group was stupid enough to take his cell phone out in the clubhouse to check texts. Our group was given one warning that any more cell phone use would result in them taking our phones until our round was complete and we were ready to leave. The place is fucking hardcore.
January 25th, 2013 at 4:09 PM
It’s private. I think a former member of August wanted to build his own dream course that he could do whatever he wanted to, or something like that, and that’s how the course came about.
January 25th, 2013 at 4:13 PM
a guy I work with’s brother is a caddy there. it’s exclusive as shit, started by a guy out of Little Rock named Warren Stephens, who is CEO of a giant investment bank. you can try to google it, but I would guess there isn’t much about there about it, that is how Stephens wants it. I’m not sure how they do it, but it isn’t even available on google earth. It’s listed in the Top 10 or 15 of golf digests top courses. I think they are playing the Western Amateur there this year, which would be the first time it’s open to the public.
January 25th, 2013 at 4:15 PM
well fuck, I say it isn’t on google earth and then I go and look and sure enough it is. either way, it’s supposedly pretty bad ass.
January 25th, 2013 at 4:17 PM
Warren Stephens
Yeah he’s an longtime ANGC member too. Yeah he developed a relationsip with Jackson and had him run the caddie program. Jackson is an educated person though and a business professional in his own right.
January 25th, 2013 at 4:24 PM
It looks like that image was taken either in the middle of winter (i.e. recently) or before the fairway grass was planted.
January 25th, 2013 at 4:29 PM
yeah, I know nothing about it so maybe it was recently. it didn’t used to be on there though.
the guy I work with told me a story about the membership there. apparently Stephens is in charge of the membership dues, and who gets in and who doesn’t, there are no set fees, just whatever he wants to charge. so one of the new members asks an existing member what he paid to get in, and the new member found out it was less than what he was paying, so he went to Stephens to say something about it. Stephens cut him a check for what he paid and told him to leave, that he wasn’t welcome anymore.
