Shabazz Muhammad Wore a Gucci Backpack, and Now the UCLA Compliance Department is Looking Into It

Shabazz Muhammad scored 23 points to lead UCLA to an upset of Arizona Thursday night, and then the freshman star donned a guicci backpack (not unlike this one you see here!) afterward. Pat Forde of Yahoo appears to be the only columnist who mentioned it.
Now, UCLA is “looking into” the backpack because the backpack is valued at over $1,000. But should they even bother? His sister tweeted this Friday:
@yahooforde I read your condescending remark about @phenom15balla leaving with a Gucci backpack after beating Arizona. That was a birthday..
— Asia Muhammad (@asiamuhammad) January 25, 2013
@yahooforde gift from myself (his sister) and his mother. I have the original receipt if you need to verify that. @phenom15balla doesn’t
— Asia Muhammad (@asiamuhammad) January 25, 2013
@yahooforde need anything from anyone except his family. I understand you’re a very distinguished writer, congrats on that.
— Asia Muhammad (@asiamuhammad) January 25, 2013
@yahooforde but you’re barking up the wrong tree on this one.
— Asia Muhammad (@asiamuhammad) January 25, 2013
The internet took Forde’s column and naturally tried to make it a story. It’s not. The end.

I understand you’re a very distinguished writer, congrats on that.
HAHAHAHAHHA. No. Not at all.
Pat Forde is the fucking worst Mmonast
Yes. Yes he is. Just a total hack. Some writers figured out the internet with dignity. He did not.

it didn’t even seem like Forde was going at the backpack that way. it just seemed like a note to add color to his column. either way, dumb, dumb reaction.
January 25th, 2013 at 9:57 PM
Do we just get to assume that every college athlete has a poor family?
January 25th, 2013 at 9:59 PM
Family probably has agent money already

Forde Yard Hash

Forde’s “I’m not saying, I’m just saying” act was pretty B.S. He knew exactly how people were going to take it. Also, shouldn’t he have at least asked Muhammad about it before he included something sure to be inflammatory (especially given Muhammad’s past NCAA problems)?

$1,000 backpacks? Damn, mine was $50 10 years ago and I thought that was steep.

January 25th, 2013 at 10:05 PM

January 25th, 2013 at 10:08 PM
Fuck you NBA TV for leaving a tied OT game for a Lebron/lucky fan interview.
January 25th, 2013 at 10:10 PM
Didn’t miss much. A bad attempt at a game winner from PP as OT expired
January 25th, 2013 at 10:18 PM
I really want to bet my savings on a Heat/OKC rematch, but the favorite never wins.
January 25th, 2013 at 10:47 PM
Would it be an issue if she mentioned that was a gift for his 30th birthday?
January 25th, 2013 at 10:51 PM
shabazz is cuban?
January 25th, 2013 at 10:54 PM
awesome
January 25th, 2013 at 10:57 PM
Cool nostalgia trip vez, but this might be the worst opening line in hackery history: Rarely does great art come out of tragedy. How am I supposed to take anything seriously after that?
January 25th, 2013 at 10:58 PM
I would think the vast majority of art is inspired by tragedy or hardship.
January 25th, 2013 at 11:10 PM
mainly love the album, and cool to read about it and see that clip from the documentary where they’re working in the studio
got no opinion on tragedy and art but first thought is, that is a silly statement by the writer

That’s why molestation is just sound parenting. Keep those career options open
January 25th, 2013 at 11:13 PM
Deep down, I know I think that’s funny. But I can’t let myself laugh at that.
January 25th, 2013 at 11:14 PM

So you just totally missed the RU a couple days ago?
no, i’ve caught all of them this week, but i truly come for the comments, and rarely click links
January 25th, 2013 at 11:22 PM
I click links, but then the work computer unclicks them.
That article looks pretty interesting, doesn’t it, Meth? Too bad you won’t be viewing it.

it could also be for sheer fun and mischief

Jesus Christ that Forde article is the worst. “And then I saw him with an expensive bag and then I looked it up and it was $900 and I don’t think he should have it, do you?”
January 26th, 2013 at 12:41 AM
Good for Asia, but no, Pat Forde is not a distinguished writer. He’s a deliberate jackass with a leaky pen and horrible hairdo.
January 26th, 2013 at 4:14 AM
Do you mean by UCLA or Shabazz’s sister? Because I thought her reaction was pretty great.
January 26th, 2013 at 9:46 AM
I thought Forde couldn’t go much lower after his lame foray into the Te’o mess. This is much worse.
Can he be sued for defamation/slander/insidious inference? I know that the answer is ‘no’, but someone should hold these “columnists” responsible for their postings, as their employers obviously aren’t.
January 26th, 2013 at 10:16 AM
I still have and use a canvas backpack I bought for college in 1994. It cost about $35.
January 26th, 2013 at 11:15 AM
Has Forde said anything about Frank Haith and the allegations involving Missouri (where Forde went to school)?
January 26th, 2013 at 12:47 PM
This. Another insufferable article by Forde. Fuck Yahoo and their crusade against NCAA athletes.
