Up 28 with Seven Minutes Left, the Miami Defense Was Still Slapping the Floor Against Duke
All that’s missing here is the Miami players pointing at Duke assistant coach Steve Wojciechowski, who patented the floor slap with the Blue Devils in the mid 90s.
It was quite a performance by the Hurricanes, whose excellent defense sparked a 25-1 run (!) in the first half from which the No. 1 Blue Devils never recovered. Duke misses Ryan Kelly greatly, but how long can they keep using that excuse?
Duke’s awful shooting night reminded me of their NCAA Tournament loss to Lehigh last March. In Miami, Seth Curry shot 0-for-10, Quin Cook was 1-of-12, and Tyler Thornton was 0-for-7. As a team, Duke was 4-of-23 from deep.
Against Lehigh in the first round shocker, Duke was 6-of-26 on three-pointers, Curry was 1-of-9, Dawkins (sitting out this year) was 2-of-9, and Cook was 1-of-5.
[UPDATE: The floor slap was a request from Warren Sapp!]

Good for Miami. A few years ago when Grant Wahl was writing about college hoops instead of whatever he does now, he did some research and found that since the tourney expanded to 64 teams, no team that has won the national title ever lost by more than 20 points during the season. I believe that still holds true.

One guard made more than one shot from the field. One. That’s not going to happen that often, but holy shit that’s an alltime bad performance.

I’m not happy with the Braves right now.

Reading through that Te’o thread; can’t believe younglefty thinks he’s too cool for TBL after meeting him at TBL ATL Day.
Also, I just realized that none of you have told me yet what happened to NDub.

It’s not an excuse for last night, that was all their shooting. NC State was greatly due to missing Kelly, and when they lose to Maryland it will be because of Kelly as well.
Jefferson is a good mop-up guy, but he can’t create his own shot yet and is nowhere near the defender Kelly is. I’m hoping they go back to their 4 guard set and get Murphy more time on the floor and less for Hairston and Jefferson. They’re not able to spread the floor like they could with Kelly in there, but a 4 guard set could do that.

That actually isn’t true. Maryland lost to Duke by 21 in the 2002 season, North Carolina lost to Wake Forest by 26 in the 1993 season, Duke lost to North Carolina by 22 in the 1991 season, and Villanova lost to Pittsburgh by 23 in the 1985 season. There are also a smattering of championship teams who have lost by 16, 17, and 19-point margins during that same timeframe. It’s kind of surprising how many past champions have been blown out at similar points of the season. I recall Duke being run off the floor by Georgetown in January 2010, with the final margin not being nearly indicative of how badly Duke lost.

Yeah getting Jefferson minutes now could be a big deal when it comes to the end of the year.

The lesson, as always, is that Grant Wahl is full of shit.

And Butters answered me last time with a similarly hilarious response.
God dammit I want answers.

1, he may have been kidding
2, if not, there seems to be/have been plenty of folks here who seem to think the pleasure of their company is highly sought after and exclusive

That actually isn’t true.
I had treated that as Gospel for 10 years or so. Thanks for setting me straight.

Thought the RR would get more love on this site.
While its the only wrestling event I watch all year, I find it to be the most singularly American thing I’ve ever witnessed.
My favorite part is when all the wrestlers gang up on and toss out the cocky foreign guy. the crowd goes wild for that.
January 24th, 2013 at 11:58 AM
Sure. Personally, I’d rather pay 60 bucks to watch the WWE guys fake hit each other on Sunday night that watch NFL guys fake hit each other for free on network TV.
