Tom Brady Was Fined $10,000 For His Kick of Ed Reed, the Same Amount Robert Griffin III Got For Wearing Adidas After a Game
Tom Brady got fined by the NFL for his sliding kick of Ed Reed in the AFC Championship Game. That, in an of itself, is a surprise. The fine was for $10,000, as first reported by Ian Rapaport. That fine announcement came a few hours after Frank Gore was fined $10,500 for wearing his socks too low in the NFC Championship Game.
If you are keeping track (and here is a summary of all fines of players this year), here are some of the notable fines this season:
- Ed Reed fined $55,000 for hit on Victor Cruz
- Ed Reed fined $50,000 for hit on Emmanuel Sanders
- Bill Belichick fined $50,000 for contacting a replacement official
- Cam Newton fined $21,000 for contacting a referee Jerome Boger
- Jared Allen fined $21,000 for blind side block that ended Lance Louis’ season
- Frank Gore and Michael Crabtree fined $10,500 for throwing footballs into stands after touchdowns
- Frank Gore fined $10,500 for wearing ankle socks
- Robert Griffin III fined $10,000 for wearing Adidas at a post game press conference
- Tom Brady fined $10,000 for ninja kicking Ed Reed
- Jay Cutler fined $10,000 for taunting by flipping ball at another player
Sounds about right. Throwing footballs to fans and socks are worth $500 more than a sliding kick into an opposing player, which is equal to wearing something with Adidas on it after a game.

No risk of injury. Small fine warranted. Business as usual.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:22 PM
I don’t think ninjas make that “oh my god please don’t hurt me face” like Tom made mid-kick.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:23 PM
The only justice would have been if Tommy had connected and simultaneously ended both his and Reeds career.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:23 PM
Weak.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:24 PM
Was a cheap play, but in Brady’s defense, he got hit sliding earlier in that game and just wanted to avoid it. Deserved a fine, but ALL head hits cause damage, even if no overt injury occurs. It was a case of clearly no injury, so hard to fine him a ton
January 24th, 2013 at 12:24 PM
When your system doesn’t incorporate a mobile QB it’s not weird that your system QB has no idea how to slide properly.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:24 PM
You always side with management you fucking lackey.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:24 PM
Were Ray Ray and Pollard fined for their headshots in that game?
January 24th, 2013 at 12:25 PM
No risk of injury.
world class athletes have hurt themselves getting out of bed and tripping over suitcases and beating up women

I don’t necessarily agree with it, but the argument that actions that occur during game-time aren’t as conscious and as well thought out as somebody brazenly breaking rules has some merit. The fines for wearing the wrong color socks reflect that.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:25 PM
Whoever taught him how to slide needs to be fired. That was the most awkward slide ever.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:25 PM
There was an injury risk. But unlike the cheap shots Ed Reed doles out, it’s pretty easy to say none occured, without the fancy new CTE scans.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:26 PM
Brady used to run a few times back in the day. Dunno how he forgot how to slide.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:27 PM
It’s like extending the knee going for a layup. It’s cheap, but at some point you gotta protect yourself.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:28 PM
Dunno how he forgot how to slide.
spends all his time wishing he could play urlacher
January 24th, 2013 at 12:29 PM
Then again, maybe the Pats’ dirtiest player (who is that now? Mankins?) should have publicly cried to the media to get the NFL to fine Lewis and Pollard.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:29 PM
RGIII petitioned the NFL to ensure the adidas symbol is sneakily on his jersey. When Mike “Short Term” Shanahan surfaces in a sweatshop in Dhaka with his memory wiped you’ll what company facilitated it.

Brady found nothing wrong with that attempted tag to Reed’s nutsack because Gisele’s always doing it to him.

I may be butt hurt, but I agree with Brady’s fine. I’m just saying, don’t the defenseless receiver head shots also usually get a fine?
January 24th, 2013 at 12:32 PM
Lisk clearly thought a larger fine was warranted. Thus, I’ve sided with labour, you cunt

It’s true I do usually side with management, it being their business and all
January 24th, 2013 at 12:34 PM
Did the CBS crew hammer Brady for his ninja kick like they did for Suh?
he got off cheap, dirty hit. and he ought to be fined every time he does his sack dance.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:34 PM
I may be butt hurt,
You just going to leave that up there like that?
January 24th, 2013 at 12:34 PM
You say headshot, I say Pats players lowering their helmet into Ray Ray and Pollard’s helmet. Learn to protect yourself when you get the ball and it won’t happen.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:34 PM

No one appreciates the fine art of potato sack dancing anymore.

Goodell really has this figured out. Fine players for bullshit all year long and then use that money to give to charties & retired players, instead of having to use more real revenue. He’s the most efficient asshole the league has ever seen.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:36 PM
Jets player with an illegal block and tearing Brian Cushing’s knee, $10,000 fine. Nice system.

Unfortunately I missed the Te’o post, and my opportunity to say he’s the phoniest ilb since Ray Lewis

Least likeable NBA player. Well, besides Ronald Artest

Everyone should take a cue from Ed Reed. You know, the guy who was slid into, the guy who is the fucking greatest, the guy who isn’t soaking up camera attention even though this might be his last ride.
This is a non-issue and Brady’s (deserved) fine was so low because he was a first time offender.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:44 PM
He’s reaped what he’s sown, and then some
Under the current rules, a dirty player for sure
January 24th, 2013 at 12:46 PM
Ed Reed seems like a good dude and has a mutual respect thing going with Brady and Belichick, it’s too bad he can’t convince his teammates to stop being such ass hats after every Pats game.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:47 PM
January 24th, 2013 at 12:48 PM
Good luck getting Suggs and Ray Ray to ever stop acting like asshats. I think you’re asking the impossible.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:50 PM
I’m fairly certain asshatting is a major at ball so hard u
January 24th, 2013 at 12:51 PM
Only with New England fans can a running back attempt to truck a defender by lowering his head into the defender, knock himself out, and they look for a head shot penalty on the defender. Also, only Pats fans can watch Tom Brady give a Suh kick at Ed Reed, when Reed is avoiding contact with the sliding Brady, and feel like Brady shouldn’t have been fined more than 10,000 dollars, first time offender or not, for an obvious cheap and potentially dangerous shot.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:51 PM
Watch that again. If Brady hit’s him a split second sooner, Reed’s foot would have been planted and the kick could have done major damage.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:52 PM
Darrel, the Ridley shot wasn’t a penalty. Not what I was talking about. Also, you lied!
“Well, Cracker jack agreed with me this morning, so that forces me to recuse myself from commenting on this post.”
January 24th, 2013 at 12:53 PM
Gore was fined $500 more over some fucking socks lol
January 24th, 2013 at 12:55 PM
only with Patriot fans can being a good dude and mutual respect be determined based on a willingness to abslove Tommy Brady from performing a dirty play. Billy and Tommy don’t respect Reed anymore or any less than they do Ray Ray and Suggs.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:58 PM
Now you’re just being intentionally obtuse. Read anything Belichick has said about Reed over the years. Loves the man. And Reed has always been pretty classy. Stop obsessing about certain fan bases and have a real conversation for once.
January 24th, 2013 at 12:58 PM
Perhaps, but that’s hypothetical territory. NFL has shown intent is irrelevant on helmet to helmets, so we can only go on what actually happened. As it happened, Reed had time to elude the errant leg. Also, Brady was hit low and late one play after throwing a pass, nothing came of it. It’s all so subjective
January 24th, 2013 at 12:59 PM

It happens to everyone on here at least once. Darrel is that good.
January 24th, 2013 at 1:01 PM
I highly doubt that. Reed is the best player of the lot, and he isn’t a perpetrator of Lewis’ horseshit theatrics, which are as un-Patriot as possible
January 24th, 2013 at 1:05 PM
read anything that any coach who faces the Ravens say about Ray Lewis. Read what the opposing QB’s have to say. Watch the end of the game and check out who was the last person Brady congragulated, and hugged it out with before he walked off the field. Internet fans may hate on Ray Ray, but the football establishment adore the dude.
January 24th, 2013 at 1:06 PM
what can i say; you inspire me.
January 24th, 2013 at 1:06 PM
Agreed there was a risk of injury.
January 24th, 2013 at 1:16 PM
If it makes you better to make that comparison to support your argument, run with it because it isn’t even worth debating. However, I’m positive if you ask former DPOY’s Ed Reed and Terell Suggs that question, they’d each roll with Ray Ray, just as I’ve heard Ngati state it. I will agree with you on one point. Based on the Patriots defensive performances since Spygate, Ray Lewis is most definitely “un Patriot like”
January 24th, 2013 at 1:36 PM
Reed v Lewis is absolutely worthy of debate. As despicable as I think Lewis is, I can’t knock him as a player. IMO they’re the top defensive players of the last 15 years, with a slight edge to Reed
