Five College Football Teams That Could Bounce Back in 2013
Texas: I know. Hear me out. Texas is not as far away as you think – they finished Top 20 in SRS the past two seasons – and the defense cannot be that bad again. The Longhorns return 19 starters. The Big 12 looks set for a down year. Only three starting quarterbacks return. Five of the ten teams are losing at least half their starters, including Kansas State and Oklahoma. A moderate improvement by Texas could lead to major rewards.
Michigan State: The Spartans lost five conference games, by a combined 10 points in regulation. Had their passing offense (with a new quarterback and no experienced receivers) not been terrible, the season could have been different. Michigan State’s offense should be better. Their defense should remain strong. They dump both Ohio State and Wisconsin from their Big Ten schedule. Harsh things should happen if this team does not bounce back into the 9-10 win range.
Miami: There has been a break in the NCAA storm clouds. It is hard to see the program itself facing much further punishment. Miami has 19 starters coming back, including 10 from a Top 20 yards per play offense. If the defense, which has talent, can improve from last year’s dismal performance, Miami should compete for an ACC Title and potentially be eligible to win it.
Michigan: Michigan will be starting a number of young players, but also a number of talented young players. Al Borges will get a year to groom Devin Gardner, a quarterback more capable of his preferred offense. The real reason to expect Michigan to bounce back is the 2013 schedule is much easier. They don’t play Alabama. They get Notre Dame, Nebraska and Ohio State in Ann Arbor, where Brady Hoke is 14-0.
Washington: Washington is a team that beat Stanford and Oregon State. It’s also a team that blew an 18-point lead in the 4th quarter against Washington State. This is the fifth-year under Sarkisian. It’s the second year under both coordinators. They bring back 17 starters, including senior quarterback Keith Price. All four classes of players will have been ranked in the Top 30. If Washington is going to get over the seven-win plateau under Sark, this has to be the year.

How many games does Auburn have to win next year for it to be considered a bounce back?
January 24th, 2013 at 4:35 PM
Michigan bounce back? In the past 5 season they’ve averaged 6.8 wins per year.
January 24th, 2013 at 4:35 PM
How many of those are on defense? That reminds me of the second OSU ass whipping in the title game when Herbie before the game said they would win because they had the experience of losing and then being a year older. Sometimes being shitty doesn’t go away with time.

of the teams listed, id go with michigan, just cuz they dont have that far to bounce back. michigan state would be the next likeliest. both due, large in part, to the weak big ten.

other side of the coin is that florida’s defense, when tebow won the heisman as a soph, was HORRIBLE, and the next two years were an absolute dominant unit.
January 24th, 2013 at 4:39 PM
The third side of the coin is that Texas and OSU fucking suck and Florida doesn’t.
January 24th, 2013 at 4:39 PM
That’s right.
January 24th, 2013 at 4:39 PM
Uconn. Offense can’t get any worse
January 24th, 2013 at 4:39 PM
the fourth side of the coin is florida doesnt suck? the fuck is wrong with you?
January 24th, 2013 at 4:40 PM
The other side of this coin is that Michigan sucks.

I cannot wait for them to be the new Florida State for the next 10 years.

I think Auburn and Arkansas are about in the same position next year. I would think if either of them can get to a bowl game the season has to be looked at as a pretty big success.

i, for one, would love to return to a coin based currency system.

It made no sense but I refused to stop myself.
Kind of like willingly having sex with a woman from Cleveland.
January 24th, 2013 at 4:46 PM
Texas just hasn’t been the same since 09

How about teams that are likely to take a big tumble next season?
I’d start the list with LSU (based on the numbers of players who declared for the draft) and Oregon (based on the loss of its 49-year-old, never-been-married coach).
Oh, and Northern Illinois, definitely.

(cough) probably where I was going to go tomorrow if it is another slow day (cough)

Illinois! They might win a B1G game next year!
January 24th, 2013 at 4:58 PM
Asst coaching hires would be interesting
January 24th, 2013 at 4:59 PM
MSU could be good if they have a competent QB. That’s unlikely though.
Watch out for Indiana and Purdue!

I love the contrast between mouth-breathing OSU fan and rational OSU fan.
January 24th, 2013 at 5:03 PM
Is Vince Young walking through that door? If not, expect at least 3 losses and getting blowed-out by OU.
Hurt by NFL departures and lack of functional QB. Defense can keep things close, but they’re not gonna pitch shutouts.
Agree, provided they don’t lose more than 1 game inexplicably this year.
Ahh, the reason for the post. Would have be gauche to put them first. there still a year or two away from competing for second place in the Big 10.
Should be a contender for the Pac-12 title.

for real. Bielema at Arkansas has made (and already lost one) some great hires.
January 24th, 2013 at 5:05 PM
Talking about me? I’m just pointing out that Michigan’s norm that past decade has been 7-9 wins not 11. Michigan will win 9 or 10 next year because the schedule is weak and the B1G sucks.

HuskerDawg is looking for you, and he’s carrying a big board with a nail in it.

Got ‘em down for third, behind Stanford and Oregon in some order
In Hoke they trust

I talked to a ex-player from Wisc last week – they’re happy with the swap they made.

Did he bring the dudes that enjoy blowing out directional tech by 70, then forget to run the ball in a bowl game?

OT – fantastic …
Boy fakes own kidnapping to stop parents from meeting teacher
An 11-year-old Spanish boy faked his own kidnapping, according to the U.K.’s Guardian, because his mom and dad were set to meet his teacher later that day—and he didn’t want to be around for the aftermath.
Needless to say, things didn’t go as planned. The boy sent a text message to his father—a police officer in the northern town of Xinzo de Limia—saying he had been kidnapped and stuffed in the back of a car. His father called him immediately. The boy said he didn’t know where he was being taken. He then faked phone static and hung up. Chaos ensued.

Hmmm… Michigan on the good list, wonder who goes on the bad?

Just announced Pendergast will also coach SC dbacks
January 24th, 2013 at 5:20 PM
Dammit, now you just know something will happen to extend the Teo saga, like dong pix coming out.
January 24th, 2013 at 5:21 PM
it’s odd how Wisconsin fans look at Bielema. I won’t sit here and act like he is the greatest coach ever, I don’t know enough about him, but you talk to Wisky fans and all they can talk about is how he didn’t win big games and managed to lose a game a year that they shouldn’t. never mention 3 straight Rose Bowls.
Wisconsin didn’t give him the money to keep his assistants, so they would lose a couple of top guys every year. Arkansas has and will allow him to open the wallet to keep those guys around if they want to stay. I think that will make a huge difference. coaching turnover in college football is huge.

A great source of relief for everyone here to learn that, I’m sure.

Michigan regular season records:
1998-2011: 113-50 (.693)
2012: 8-4 (.667)
How do you “bounce back” from a perfectly typical season?
January 24th, 2013 at 5:51 PM
Wait, did Michigan make a New Years Day bowl? Their upside is beating Ohio State, and that’s not happening.
January 24th, 2013 at 6:06 PM
It’s been a Michigan tradition for the last 50 years. Have a good season, then pretend it’s not a good season by their delusional standards
