Callaway Reportedly Investigated Phil Mickelson’s Gambling Habits Prior to 2004 Endorsement Deal
Busy week in the news for Phil Mickelson, right? And the first golf major is still about 10 weeks away!
Larry Dorman of PGATour.com had an interesting note buried in his column Tuesday. It dates back to his days when he was the Senior Vice President, Global Press and Public Relations at Callaway, which was recruiting Phil Mickelson in 2004.
Take it away, Larry:
The month before the Ryder Cup was to be played at Oakland Hills, he signed with Callaway, swayed by the company’s new golf ball and driver combination. The surprise signing and the proximity of the Ryder Cup combined to cause quite an uproar in the media.
Baseless rumors arose in some quarters, questioning Mickelson’s motivation for signing. When I say baseless, I mean totally unfounded, manufactured rumors alleging gambling debts that had no basis in fact. Mickelson did like to gamble at the time, but he had zero outstanding debts and his betting patterns — a stat that Vegas casinos keep — had him even, to slightly up. All the information was checked out by Callaway’s head of investigations, a former head of counterintelligence for the U.S. Army, and no evidence was found to support the claims, either of gambling debt or any other charge.
Notre Dame should have hired the guys at Callaway who dug into Mickelson’s background.

Isn’t doing an investigation of an athlete’s background be a pretty standard thing? It would seem reasonable if you are going to give someone millions of dollars to be the face of your company.

“If I know four things in life for certain, it’s that Vietnam was a direct threat to the United States, Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, Phil Mickelson isn’t dirty, and that bus full of three year old Muslim girls we blew up from the sky was a sleeper cell.”
January 24th, 2013 at 1:47 PM
Pretty much all of this.

I remember some b.s. story from several years ago about Phil betting 6 figures in his Masters practice rounds.
Every single golfer I know loves to gamble. I’m sure the guys with the big bucks love it even more.

i may never find out, but it seems that the richer you are, the less it hurts to lose. takes the edge off gambling if you ask me.

PGA golfer Phil Mickelson had a hot hand during 2001. Fans might remember that two longshots won titles that year: the Baltimore Ravens won the Super Bowl, and the Arizona Diamondbacks knocked off the New York Yankees in a classic World Series. Mickelson was part of betting groups that had picked both squads. Their $20,000 bet on the 28-to-1 Ravens yielded a cool $560,000, and they hit again with $20K on the 38-to-1 Diamondbacks. And to think people used to say Mickelson couldn’t get a big win.

So true. I used to belong to a golf club that kept points for the annual Club Championship, settling bets after each tournament was by far the most important activity…

Clarification for me please – I haven’t read any of the details of Mickelson’s issue other than he owes taxes and said taxes are too high.
Are some of his debts now being connected to gambling losses? Has he gambled away lots of winnings recently or just failed to pay appropriate tax liability?
January 24th, 2013 at 1:53 PM

6-figures on 1 round of golf is pretty stiff…

phil plays golf like a gambling addict.
and im sure it helped the investigators that phil’s fairly forthcoming with just about everything he does. he loves to talk about himself and doesn’t really hide from much other than all those tournaments in ohio he ducks because of his illegitimate child*.
*speaking of baseless claims that don’t make sense considering, you know…phil plays two tourneys per year in ohio.
January 24th, 2013 at 1:55 PM
The tax issue was that he was paying 60% of his income, or some outrageous figure, in taxes in California and said it was time to move to Florida because of it.
January 24th, 2013 at 1:56 PM
f’real…one of the best feelings in golf is executing a shot when there’s shit on the line. even if it’s just for bragging rights. that pressure is addictive.
January 24th, 2013 at 1:56 PM
Draw your own conclusions.
January 24th, 2013 at 1:57 PM
I had a loudmouth friend play in a 2-man tourney with me one year. Had to drive straight to the ATM after he posted an 88-89-94 and we lost every bet.
January 24th, 2013 at 1:57 PM
Nothing better than a big press on 18 and having a 12 foot birdie putt…and making it.

yes, but in the larger scheme of things? if i lose too much, i may not be able to pay bills/mortgage, etc. (if i had a problem). this guy loses six figures, it’s more about the hurt of losing than the bank account (again, unless he has a problem)
also, i have never gambled on an outcome i could effect, other than blackjack. would be cool to use an athletic skill to influence a win/loss
January 24th, 2013 at 1:58 PM

That’s it? That’s all? And he apologized for that?
I had the impression he was under water with debts, and some of that was IRS related?
People need thicker skin.

agree in general, but the summary you got didn’t include the fact that it came off as whining about his wealth
January 24th, 2013 at 2:00 PM
Your rebuttal doesn’t make sense because the child is black and they don’t let black people into golf courses, so he doesn’t have anything to worry about.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:01 PM
Oh good we need a third thread talking about the taxes stuff, good work guys.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:01 PM
Didnt part of it also have to do with some group he was in to buy the Padres that fell apart?
January 24th, 2013 at 2:01 PM
no shit…don’t bitch about taxes when you NETTED $25mm in A YEAR when almost 10% of the country can’t get a job.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:01 PM
That’s why I hate putting second in match play or when I know I have to make a putt. I always hammer it by and never account for less break due to the amount of speed I put on it.
By the way, it’s 77* here. Gonna hit some balls later.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:02 PM
i laughed.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:02 PM
Wasn’t a part of that, sorry. Should we talk about smoking hot Auburn graduates some more?
January 24th, 2013 at 2:03 PM
You know who I’m actively pulling against this year?
Bubba Watson.

I’ve dealt with sister jokes all my life.
Sorry. We had a freezing cold January last year, but it’s been mild this year. Probably just means February and March will play games with us. That time change and hot weather can’t get here fast enough.

I am pulling against Dustin Johnson until he leaves my chick alone…
January 24th, 2013 at 2:06 PM
Hey you’re the one who said your sister was too hot for us.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:07 PM
Couldn’t remember the context, and of course I was just going way out on a limb with that presumption.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:09 PM
Hey you’re the one who said your sister was too hot for us.
This comes up every now and again and until we see pics, I call bullshit. We are upstanding gentlemen. Well, some of us.

You guys are missing it, it was funny to me because he was talking about how hot his sister was.

We had snow a week or two ago. Now we get 60-70* for a week or two.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:12 PM
see, i LOVE LOVE LOVE these, simply because i dont hit enough greens against good players and they’re my best chances at stealing holes.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:12 PM
No, that’s not what I said and what nobody presumed because no matter how ugly she is, it still applies that she’s too hot for this crowd.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:14 PM
Aye, we’re all clear on the rules . No Jews and no blacks.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:15 PM
staying on topic…i remember hearing a rumor that titleist dropped mickelson early (before his contract expired) when they caught wind that eli callaway played a voice mail phil left at a national sales meeting.
someone else use their google fu to ascertain the veracity.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:15 PM
No Jews and no blacks.
so lenny kravitz plays tennis?

It would be ironic if Mickelson signed with Nike Golf, a company that he once singled out as providing inferior equipment to the world’s #1 player Tiger Woods. His words at the time landed him in some hot water with Acushnet’s chief, Wally Uihlein. However, it would also represent a major marketing coup to spot light Mickelson pulling a John Kerry and reversing his opinion when it comes to the benefit of Nike’s equipment.
Meanwhile, Callaway Golf (ELY:NYSE) is expected to have something to say about which ball, Mickelson plays in future tournaments. The 23-time winner on the PGA Tour is well aware of the performance benefits of Callaway’s HX Tour golf ball and ERC Fusion driver. A year ago he left a message on a senior executive’s voice mail at Callaway declaring how much he liked both products. The message was saved and replayed at the company’s national sales meeting. Needless to say, Acushnet was less than impressed with Mickelson’s actions.
At the start of 2004, Steve Loy, Mickelson’s agent wasn’t able to bargain from a position of strength, but now the tables are turned in part due to a victory at Augusta National and a free market society that encourages competition. Due to the strength in Titleist’s staff, it can afford to part company with Mickelson, while its competition is eager to cozy up to this year’s #2 on the money list and #4 in the world rankings.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:20 PM
Spencer – that entire deal reminds me of Mickelson clapping for that Euro trash in the Ryder Cup this year.

Who was it that had the exceptionally bright children who smarter than everyone elses, and will graduate from Harvard at age 4?

ritty…this whole ordeal is pure phil. tries to pull off a shot he doesn’t have the ability to pull off and has to scramble. he hit a terrific flop to save with callaway, but he’s staring at a bogey after this tax stuff.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:24 PM
Stigs? His tbl coffin is still warm
January 24th, 2013 at 2:25 PM
He’ll win a tournament, do that half thumbs up thing he does and smile at the gallery, and it’ll blow over, even if he’s moved to Florida.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:25 PM
There were lots of specious rumors surrounding that deal. One of the more outlandish ones held that Phil hit up Titleist for a $12 million cash bonus for winning The Masters, they declined, and he walked.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:25 PM
It was golfercraig who was talking about his kids. He made some bold statements that lead me to believe he was 100% telling the truth.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:26 PM
as someone who enjoys watching phil play golf (fuck you mole), i dont see him winning much this year*…he looked like CRAP last year outside of that sunday mollywhopping of tiger at pebble.
*which means he’s going to be awesome this year
January 24th, 2013 at 2:26 PM
Yeah well a lot of genius kids end up killing themselves so good luck with that.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:28 PM
in phil’s defense…titleist doesn’t pay like TM or callaway or nike. they never have, even the top guys like tiger, sergio (it was a big deal when he left titleist) or rory.

“Here, Tiger, please accept this check for $100 million. Say, you ain’t bangin’ any waitresses or anything we need to know about, huh? Heh-heh, just joking, my good man. Here, really, take the check.”
- Phil Knight, in a more innocent time
January 24th, 2013 at 2:39 PM
i’ll make it more accurate.
“hey tiger, please take this check for $100mm because we don’t have ANY golf division, and you’re the type of athlete who’s a powerful enough brand to build an entire operation around that will become an industry giant in about a decade. what if there’s a scandal? aint nothin we haven’t seen before…forget sweatshops, hell, we signed kobe AFTER he raped that chick.”
January 24th, 2013 at 2:39 PM
He made some bold statements that lead me to believe he was 100% telling the truth.
i have no idea why anyone would lie in a comments section full of people you’ll most likely never meet
January 24th, 2013 at 2:41 PM
ive seen video of golfercraig’s kid’s golf swing (AND THAT WAS ALL, AUTHORITIES)…not sure if the kid’s a genius or not, but he sure has one helluva golf swing for anyone, let alone a kid that age.
January 24th, 2013 at 2:43 PM
I’m betting Vanessa got her own check for $100 million in that deal.

I’m generally a fan of the warmer weather, but I wish it would snow so there was something to do outside like sledding, etc with the kids.
