Michael Carter Williams of Syracuse is a Top 10 Draft Pick in 2013. But Can He Go 1st Overall?
Did you see what Michael Carter Williams of Syracuse did Monday? His best Russell Westbrook impersonation, soaring down the lane and dunking with alacrity.
Carter-Williams, a slithery 6-foot-7 point guard with the length and frame of Penny Hardaway, leads the NCAA in assists (9.1 per game) and is 4th in steals (3.1). He’s had seven games with double figures in points and assists. Remember the meteoric rise of Kansas center Jeff Withey last year? That’s what MCW, a sophomore, is doing this year at Syracuse (I’d argue his rise has been more impressive, given that Withey had Thomas Robinson, a lottery pick, as a wingman). Buried behind trigger-happy Scoop Jardine last year, MCW didn’t start a game. He didn’t play a minute in the NCAA tournament.
MCW is not without flaws (on the court – we’re excluding his Lord & Taylor incident … whatever that was.). He’s shooting 37 percent from the field and only 28 percent from three. Here’s what Boeheim said after the Cincinnati win:
Boeheim on MCW: I can’t cook. If I believed in my cooking like he believes in his shooting, I’d win Iron Chef.

Back to the good news: This isn’t a dominant draft class. There is no consensus No. 1 pick. Cody Zeller? Great college player, should make a solid pro, but have we already seen the best of him? The problem with staying in school and not showing massive growth is that your game will be nitpicked to death. Zeller is obviously still a lottery pick, but he doesn’t look a franchise player/max contract player.

Who else is there?
Shabazz Muhammad is teeming with potential, but so far, I’ve only seen a blend between Michael Redd and Rudy Gay. Top 5 pick? Probably. 1st overall? I don’t see it. What’s he at the next level, a SG or SF?
James Michael McAdoo? He’s really struggling without a point guard, and frankly, I’ve been more impressed by UNLV’s Anthony Bennett, who has been beastly so far inside for the Rebels, and is hitting 40 percent of his 3-pointers.
Nerlens Noel of Kentucky? Shot-blocking machine, but not nearly the game-changer Anthony Davis was. Noel doesn’t have an offensive move, either. Davis is averaging 13.1 ppg in the NBA as a rookie. I don’t see Noel doing that for a few years. The only other UK player in the discussion for the Top 10 would be point guard Archie Goodwin.
The strongest contenders with MCW for the No. 1 pick, right now, have to be Maryland’s 7-footer, Alex Len, Duke’s Mason Plumlee (yes, really), dancing Ray Allen clone Ben McLemore of Kansas, and a major sleeper, Oklahoma State’s Marcus Smart, who has been unbelievable for the Cowboys. I have raved about Len for awhile now, and still think he’s only scratching the surface. The Terps have no point guard, run a very shaky offense, and Len is being criminally misused (the offense should go through him, not Dez Wells). Smart is explosive, a combo guard, and occasionally reminds me of James Harden. I’d take Smart over Shabazz if I were an NBA team.
The biggest obstacle to MCW from going first overall? The teams that will be drafting at the top don’t all need a point guard. Let’s briefly look at the worst teams in the NBA:
1. Washington (9-30) – Have John Wall (though it remains to be seen if they love him and will extend him).
2. Cleveland (10-32) – Have Kyrie Irving.
3. Charlotte (10-32) – Have Kemba Walker who is having a terrific sophomore season in the pros … but I think they’d draft MCW.
4. Phoenix (13-28) – Drafted Kendall Marshall in the lottery last year; just signed Goran Dragic to a big deal.
5. Orlando (14-26) – Definitely would draft MCW.
I’d say there are two teams that definitely would not draft MCW: Cleveland and Phoenix. The others? He’d have to be strongly considered for the top spot.

He has to improve his shooting first.
January 22nd, 2013 at 4:59 PM
ben mclemore gordon?
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:00 PM
Mclemore is more likely to go #1. that kid is fantastic
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:01 PM
@ KC Res
What are your thoughts on the game tonight?
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:03 PM
in all honesty, MCW would be better than anything Charlotte, Orlando, Phoenix, Sacramento, Dallas, Indiana, and Atlanta have at point guard.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:04 PM
Goran Dragic is actually pretty good, AP
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:04 PM
KC – if you go to the game, look for Lisk. He’ll be there.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:05 PM
McClemore is the best player right now. I would take him #1 even if I’m Washington. He is better than Bradley Beal.
I think the wild card for me is Nerlen Noels. Like you said, he doesn’t have an offensive game at all but if there is any chance that a GM thinks he can be worked on, then I would consider him. His defensive numbers are outrageous, just look at them. Maybe the best I’ve ever seen in college, at least in some time and he’s only a frosh.
Still, I’m taking Little Ben out of Kansas #1 if it was me.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:06 PM
JMac, Dragic is good, true. MCW can also play the 2 if need be (hinging on him improving as a shooter). He could be a good complement to Dragic but I just think MCW’s ceiling is higher
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:08 PM
Better than Anthony Davis? I don’t think Noel is ready for the NBA. Davis had the defensive game PLUS the offensive skill. Noel will be mired on the bench his entire career unless he shows any offensive ability
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:09 PM
I actually am surprised at how solid Kemba Walker has become as a pro. I’m not sure MCW would be better than him or at least not so much that I’d pass up filling another position.
The rest I agree with though. People endlessly hype Jeff Teague in Atlanta as he endlessly does absolutely nothing to warrant it. Jrue Holiday, that’s a kid that deserves some hype.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:10 PM
Better than George Hill? Right now? No. Not a chance. In 3 years? Possibly.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:11 PM
I really like Doug McDermott’s game but he seems to be lacking on the defensive side. He’s got Larry Bird’s skills on offense but not even close to playing defense like basketball Jesus could
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:13 PM
Statistically, yes. I think I read somewhere that his defensive stats are the best for a freshman since Patrick Ewing. He averages almost 3 steals per game on top of 4 blocks.
Again, it would be up to a GM to decide whether they could mold him or not. I think he’s a better gamble though than someone like Thabeet was.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:13 PM
I saw George Hill in the playoffs. What a hot mess when the pressure is on him.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:14 PM
/googles “alacrity”
//schooled
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:14 PM
I’d say it’s closer to improved than terrific, but I ultimately think he’ll be best served in the NBA as a 6th man / microwave type guy. And where the Bobcats are currently at, they should probably just acquire as much talent as possible, regardless of position. The only place I think they’d be “set” at is SF.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:14 PM
So, is he more Kyle Korver or Jimmer Fredette? I haven’t seen him play much at all.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:14 PM
Thabeet definitely wasn’t ready for the pros. He had only played basketball for a couple years before jumping. a disaster
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:15 PM
He is going to be the steal of the draft. A good team will pick him up in the late 1st round, and he will be ultra-productive for many years.
I would draft Anthony Bennett #1.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:15 PM
Oklahoma State’s Marcus Smart, who has been unbelievable for the Sooners
I think you mean Cowboys?
Mclemore is my vote fwiw.
/Nothing
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:17 PM
Korver. same height, a few pounds more than Korver. Freshman year: 14.9PPG, Soph: 22.9 PPG. Only a junior right now.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:17 PM
Neither is a good comparison. The best comparison I can think of is Glen Rice.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:18 PM
McDermott and Harrison Barnes were high school teammates. Barnes got all the hype the past 2 years but McDermott is the better player
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:19 PM
if Doug McDermott were on a team like Syracuse, they’d be the favorite to win the title by a large margin
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:19 PM
Really? Everything I’ve seen regards him as pretty much serviceable, nothing more.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:20 PM
One of these days, the Hawks will finally get rid of Josh Smith and get a real center so Horford can play PF and kick ass.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:21 PM
Bigger issue is if he loves them. I think there is no question they attempt to sign him to a long term deal, but he might want to play for a better team.
No chance they finish with the worst record now that he is back.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:22 PM
Washington needs a real big man, not this Okafor/Nene bullcrap
/and i thought they’d be better because of those two
//shamed
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:23 PM
McDermott will get drafted by a savvy team like OKC or SA where he will spend the next 8 years shooting 50% from the corner on 3′s.
I’d take Shabazz #1, McLemore #2.
MCW’s shooting numbers are too low for me to get excited. Especially considering the fact that he shows zero restraint.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:23 PM
Is he a double agent?
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:23 PM
People seem to be pretty confident that shooting is a skill that can just be improved. I’m curious to know how many players that have MCW’s awful percentages actually turn out to be adequate shooters in the pros, because those numbers are awful.
For comparison, Rondo shot 49 / 28/ 57 for his career at Kentucky.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:24 PM
I think he’s a smaller version of Ryan Anderson.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:24 PM
I’m not sold on Shabazz so far. Not sure another year wouldn’t hurt him.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:24 PM
Is he athletic as hell, because most people forget Glen Rice was. Before he got the extra 30 pounds that is.
On a side note, Glen Rice was the greatest NBA Live player ever. Ever.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:25 PM
except ryan anderson doesn’t have a post game and doesn’t rebound
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:25 PM
Glen Rice was the greatest lover Sarah Palin ever had
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:25 PM
Steal of the draft.
/if they sell drafts at Lord and Taylor
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:26 PM
From the times I’ve watched him, he’s a good scorer that pretty much does nothing else. In the NBA, you had better be able to do more than just score or you’re a bench guy at best.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:26 PM
4.1 if you count that mall incident.
/c’mon TBL, this is low-hanging fruit
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:27 PM
Harrison Barnes, line 1
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:28 PM
pitt fans….pffffft
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:28 PM
The only issue I have with McDermott is that everything he does is deliberate. There just isn’t that quick game that most NBA guys especially his size need. Even Wally Szcerbiak had some hop and pep to is game coming out of school. McDermott is an “A” college offensive player, but I could esily see him getting shut down against any sort of length (i.e. Sullinger, Luke Harangody, Adam Morrison, etc etc)
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:29 PM
Did this submarine their season AP? Never liked Jardine
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:29 PM
Yea, I think McDermott will be a better pro than Anderson, and I like Anderson’s game quite a bit.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:30 PM
Sullinger’s turning into and will be a pretty good pro. He won’t be an All-Star type most likely but definitely doesn’t deserve to be lumped in with the two white guys with funny hairdos.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:30 PM
No.. Fab Melo being a dumb fuck submarined the season.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:31 PM
This. Sullinger already has improved leaps and bounds in just 1/2 a season.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:31 PM
I didn’t like him either but it had more to do with the fact that he seemed to hit every big shot against my Bearcats. This year he turned into Brandon Triche.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:32 PM
the starting backcourt of MCW and Triche is so much better than Scoop and Triche. Syracuse doesn’t have that Dion Waiters kind of guy coming off the bench to drop 20-30 at any point but the guard play is better overall. Now if James Southerland, a SENIOR, could get his shit in gear, perhaps he’ll be back. However, he might be done for the year because the NCAA is investigating his prep school in Massachusetts.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:33 PM
I was really worried yesterday that cincy was going to have another big east tournament performance where they buried Syracuse. Thankfully Cincy went cold in the first half and Syracuse was able to weather the Kilpatrick storm in the second half. You can’t even defend those 28 foot three point shots. ridiculous
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:34 PM
this. Doc has been playing him in crunch time over Bass, Wilcox, and anyone else. Bass and Green have been terrible.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:35 PM
oh i forgot..the REFS submarined Syracuse’s season last year against Ohio State. I still maintain that Syracuse was the only team who could give Kentucky a real game in the final four
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:35 PM
Glen Rice was the greatest lover Sarah Palin ever had
always funny.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:36 PM
Teague can play
Aspire to a Jason Terry type
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:36 PM
I could see the Cavs taking another PG real early if the value was there.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:36 PM
If anyone has watched MCW for a prolonged period of time he makes just as many dumb plays as Jardine made. But his awesome plays and athleticism out do anything Jardine could ever do.
The officials in the Ohio State game and Kris Joseph’s sleepwalking through that same game submarined Cuse’s season last year
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:36 PM
Michael Redd was badass before the injuries
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:37 PM
/weeps
//breaks stuff
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:37 PM
Rudy Gay – perfect example of doing less with more.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:39 PM
Has a lot of Vince Carter to him. Minus a bit of talent and character flaw
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:40 PM
So much better than his brother who actually gets regular minutes for Cleveland. Cody will have a good career
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:40 PM
Yeah, it was a good back and forth. Kilpatrick and Wright are both pretty good players(though Wright was banged up). The problem is that outside of them, UC basically has no one who can score so if they’re not, then it’s all bad.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:41 PM
Regarding Mason Plumlee: I can definitely see him having a 7-10 year career in the league. Really good defender, outhustles people, has improved at the freethrow line, and half-decent post game.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:41 PM
Definitely. There’s no inside presence like Yancey Gates was last year. For that, I am happy
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:42 PM
Stones want that kid from Kansas. Then trade Monroe for Cousins.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:42 PM
and then fire the coach.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:43 PM
Good size, great athleticism
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:46 PM
@ KC Res
What are your thoughts on the game tonight?
KU should kill them. However, they’ve been playing shitty on O lately and sleep walking through games and then getting bailed out in the end. McGruder is good, but not some man-beast hoops kill em all player.
Jmac – The game is in Manhattan. Why in the world is Lisk going? Free tickets? That is still a healthy drive from his end of Kansas City.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:46 PM
And hire Harbuagh.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:48 PM
Really surprised JaQuon Parker hasn’t gotten better. I thought he was really coming on at the end of last year and ready to turn into a 15 and 6 guy from the guard spot. Instead he’s shooting worse from the floor and looks like this is his ceiling. Don’t know if t’s because the offense flows through Kilpatrick and Wright, the function of Cronin’s offense or his demeanor, but it’s been disappointing.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:50 PM
If you have a solid skill set(he does) and are willing to bust your ass 85%+ of the time, you will always have a spot in the NBA. Those guys are much more talented than you but that talent allows them to loaf and you can take advantage of them. Looking at you Dwight Howard.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:50 PM
I’ve been hearing Ryan Boatright will probably declare for the draft. Thoughts on when/if he’d be drafted? I am not a fan
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:54 PM
Parker’s just a hustler. He can get going at times but he was better last year when he kind of snuck up on people. Now they know his game and he’s being contained a lot easier. I think this team will make a run somewhere around Sweet 16 again because defensively you’re not going to find many better teams but like I said earlier, if Kilpatrick and Cash go cold, it’s over.
January 22nd, 2013 at 5:59 PM
Hmmmm…….
January 22nd, 2013 at 6:01 PM
Ryan Anderson was a good rebounder in college (10rpg). And while I agree with you that McDermott has a better post game (a devastating one at that), he’s not going to play in the post in the NBA.
He’s going to have the same problem Derrick Williams has, too small for a 4, too slow for a 3. But I think he’s such a good shooter, he’ll be able to make a spot for himself.
January 22nd, 2013 at 6:03 PM
Putting one’s head down and dribbling straight at the hoop is not even a half-decent post game.
January 22nd, 2013 at 6:06 PM
Eat up space in the paint defensively and catch alley-oops. Perfect fit for the devolution of the center position.
January 22nd, 2013 at 6:11 PM
…can’t really shoot 50% from 3PT line…
February 1st, 2013 at 2:44 PM
Really would love for my Pistons to stop messing around and making a run at that 8th seed to only lose in 4 to whoever. (Heat) Smart or MCW would be amazing and send Brandon Knight to the 2 where he belongs
