Smith not making many mistakes wasn’t a function of his ability or savvy, it was a creation of Harbaugh limiting his playcalling to protect him. Harbaugh came to the realization that the amount of protection he had to provide Smith limited the rest of the team.

That NFC Championship Game was a tale of 2 Quarterbacks. One who stood in the pocket and took a beating, attempting to keep his team in the game and eventually won, and the other who checked down or threw the ball away too quickly before he resorted to his previous career form in the second half. It’s funny that the story in the off season was how the 49er’s had to shop for receivers because the ones they had couldn’t get open. Manningham is out, Moss is a secondary receiver, and their receiving corp is being led by the guy who they said couldn’t get open. Funny how he was able to do that on a more consistent basis once he had a QB who was willing and able to make those throws.

He’ll always have that game to remember. Is that the only example you have, because if it is, that should pretty much explain to people even on your universe the limitations Alex Smith provides to a team looking to win a Super Bowl.

Why not throw a 10 yard out route to the sideline then throw to the end zone? Not enough time?

that probably takes 5-6 seconds off the clock since you’d have to wait for a route to take the player close enough, SF would have been defending the sideline too tight for a quick throw over there.
