Manti Te’o Told ESPN He Wasn’t Part of the Hoax, But Many Questions Remain and Everyone is Still Skeptical
Manti Te’o spoke to ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap late Friday night in his first interview about the Notre Dame star’s fake/dead girlfriend. Go read the entire story ESPN posted this morning, as there’s a lot to digest. (Amazingly, Te’o gave credence to the improbable drug dealer story the Star Advertiser posted Friday.)
In summary:
* Te’o said he was never in on the hoax
* he lied to his dad, which is how his Dad fed the media a bunch of bullshit about their “meetings”
* Manti did talk to the fake/dead girlfriend on Skype, but she was in a “black box” and couldn’t be seen
* the fake/dead girlfriend once asked him for his checking account number
* a “group of people connected to Tuiasosopo” showed up at Notre Dame’s hotel the weekend before the BCS title game and told him they were “waiting for Kekua to join them”
* last Wednesday, the day the story broke, he received a twitter DM from Tuiasosopo saying it was all a hoax.
When Schaap asked why he lied during interviews about having met her?
So I kind of tailored my stories to have people think that, yeah, he met her before she passed away, so that people wouldn’t think that I was some crazy dude.”
My lingering questions, which will probably never get answered (and I’ll probably want to add to this throughout the weekend):
* Did you really have no friends at Notre Dame who, when you told them how invested you were in some online chick that you never met, slap some fucking sense into you?
* After the drug dealer call on Dec. 6th, did you keep telling the media about the fake/dead girlfriend because you were just in too deep?
* Still curious what happened between that Dec. 6th call and notifying the Notre Dame coaches on Dec. 26th. What were you doing for those 20 days? I could understand being embarrassed and perplexed, but why not tell Swarbrick and coaches sooner and get that investigation off the ground?
* Ever after the Notre Dame private investigation – which didn’t come up in the Schaap interview, it seems – and Notre Dame handing you the findings on Jan. 5th, you still seemed confused when they showed up at your hotel. Would have been nice to find out which happened first … or what the findings revealed. If Notre Dame’s investigation nailed Tuiasosopo as the mastermind, why did you need a DM from him to confirm that?

Te’o appears to be sticking to the “I’m the stupidest person on the planet” defense.
January 19th, 2013 at 9:11 AM
There is so much bullshit in Te’o's story, I don’t even know where to start.
This supposedly great kid didn’t think of visiting his terminally ill girlfriend in the hospital that he supposedly cared SOOOO much about? Not once? Really?
And in 2012, who considers themselves to have a significant other that they’ve never even touched physically (I’m not even including sex….just physical contact)?
If Jeff Ireland’s line of questioning towards Dez Bryant is any indication as to how blunt NFL personnel folks get during combine interviews, Te’o is going to get toasted in his interviews.

Or is he actually just smarter than us all?

I wish there were a chart showing how far his draft stock is falling with each asinine thing this guy does.

If you believe one word of this you are a complete moron.
I stopped reading ESPN college football a long time ago, and probably have to stop reading SI after this pathetic whitewash. Not sure whats left, but getting my CFB info only from black shoe diaries is probably unhealthy.

As I said last night… At worst teo is guilty of peddling some self serving embellishments… Lies if you will…. This is news why? ….. I’m sure jmac has told plenty a story to a woman in his day…
Deadspin now looks like ass for concluding teo to be an unscrupulous criminal mastermindBased on a doosh who was 80% certain teo was in on this.. For continuing their anti notre dame agenda.
Here is the real question… The big lead can make the killing strike on deadspin for their whiff on this…. Why won’t thebiglead take on deadspin? … Scared….don’t want the details of that one night in DuPont circle to come to light?
January 19th, 2013 at 9:20 AM
Telling a story to a woman to get laid and perpetuating lie upon lie to the national media again and again about a dying girlfriend are two different things no?
I think we can all agree Deadspin got it wrong in thinking Te’o was any kind of mastermind if you catch my drift…

NFL GM: Manti…MANTI! You can quit juggling kittens now. We’re done with the interview.

no way, Uncle Remus is great. He’s the only one who thinks Deadspin is the one who looks bad in this and not the fraud LB who at worst cooked up this whole bullshit story from the jump or at best learned about the hoax and continued to play it up in interviews in order to boost his Heisman/ NFL draft stock

Online relationships are a thing. There are nerds out there playing online games (or commenting on sports blogs) that have entire worlds of people they consider real friends and more, but that they’d never meet. Also, the guy’s 21. Plenty of kids in that age range build up even minor relationships into life-altering things and then move on like it’s nothing. Considering he never actually met her, it would probably have been that much easier.
Not saying this isn’t f-ed up or that he’s being 100% truthful. But enough of the judging. Jeebus.
January 19th, 2013 at 10:12 AM
Nothing screams honesty like a 10 pm off camera Friday interview.
How anyone can take this guy seriously is beyond me. Yet every article I read on mainstream sites continues to buy into the bullshit.

January 19th, 2013 at 10:24 AM
Nfl gms do not really care about stories.. Despite the fact that jmac believes Matt Barkley will kill in his interviews and become a high pick… Because he comes across as such a well bred kid… Even though he sucks… Manti will be just as good.. Probably better in interviews than Matt… And the difference is manti has first round talent. Mark Sanchez committed statutory rape when he was ate USC… And he was drafted with the fifth pick. Teo is a 10-20 pick… And I doubt this cripples his draft status. So he is gullible to online dating… I’ll ask mmmmost if he actually knows anything about the browns players here in Cleveland… Joe Haden routinely pulled his pants down as well as his boys in the lobby of his pinnacle apartment complex… Called for the concierge to bring his groceries from his rented Lamborghini to his apartment and actually physically assaulted another concierge that the browns paid off so that they wouldn’t press charges…
I’d rather have teo… Deadspin was and is wrong… Funny they outed the anonymous source who said he was 80 %sure teo was in on it when he went on Espn and said teo was a fool who was fooled. Deadspin does some good work.. But they whiffed here with regards to their conclusions. Breaking the story was not necessarily news as teo was to release it.. Espn had it… But their jump was wrong… Daulerio wouldnt have made that jump.
Also.. Tim Burke was not smart enough to get into notre dame… He got the thin envelope

I used to be an ND fan. Grew up rooting for them with my dad.
Brian Kelly’s a foul-mouth jackass. A player and administrators perpetuated a ruse to pump up a Heisman candidacy. Administrators covered up a rape. And jackass Kelly left a kid in a scissor-lift in a windstorm to film practice (not a game, practice).
ND promotes themselves as different, higher class, better. They’re not. Covering things up to maintain what is, at the heart, a lie, is not something I’d ever want to be a part of.

Who had anything to gain from this?? Some dude playing a scam for 3-4 years with zero kickback?? Manti was quoted I an interview a while back that he went to hospital and saw her. This is what I meant earlier this week when I said Deadspin broke the story, and the big boys are going to have to clean it up. Deadspin comes off as a couple of reporters from the high school newspapers with Woodward and Bernstein fantasies. They didn’t have enough to draw a conclusion, but they drew one anyway, and of course they went for the most sensationalized one. If ESPN sat on this for a few weeks, then obviously Deadspin wasn’t the only people aware of the story, they just happened to premature ejaculate on the story. It’s hard for the messageboard groupthinkers to grasp that possibility because you’ve become so emotionally invested in tearing down Te’o and Notre Dame. So, when Deadspin comes out with something, it’s absolutely factual, however, when Notre Dame or Te’o says something, there are questions that remain. Whatever works for your narratives.
January 19th, 2013 at 11:38 AM
So you don’t think Te’o perpetuated this for any gain?
January 19th, 2013 at 11:40 AM
Whatever works for your narratives.
I get what you’re saying here.
Unfortunately, the easiest narrative is that we don’t imagine anyone can be this stupid and duped this long.
He was duped and he lied. And administrators sat on the truth then lied. So he’s a stupid liar. And the administrators are liars. Seems way too easy and simple for some but it fits.

I think that he was embarrassed even before the fake death to admit to anyone that he had become emotionally invested in someone he had never met.
And seeing that it wouldn’t hurt his heisman campaign, decided to continue the lies. Simple.

I think once you are that deep you have a rehearsed story, you don’t know what to do. If he answered the questions just repeating facts, wishing it would all go away, I can see it. If he continued to expand on the story, it’s a lot less defensible.
The biggest problem I have is that I expect this from a 14 year old. The amount of sketchiness going on with AOL IM when I was in high school (late 1990′s) is crazy. By the time you are in college, you should be able to see this a little better.
January 19th, 2013 at 1:51 PM
The other thing is that back in 1999, it was a lot harder to check up on stuff. Is “google.com” blocked on the Notre Dame campus? Does the Notre Dame President only allow the internet in Latin?
January 19th, 2013 at 2:12 PM
Manti wasn’t on any radar as a pro prospect or Heisman candidate till this year.
This isn’t really true on either count, btw. He was pimped as a dark horse Heisman candidate before this season and last season, it was just considered a long, long shot. And he considered going pro last year because he was a borderline 1st rounder then.

I’m not really sure what it helps in your head to think he was a no-name. He was a 2nd team All-American in 2011
January 19th, 2013 at 2:59 PM
Its not like Notre Dame doesn’t have a recent history of gaining national attention after a few big starts. By the time of the MSU game, ND was back on the radar.
January 19th, 2013 at 3:07 PM
Do I think Manti did this with the Heisman on this mind? No. I think at first this relationship was created so he wouldn’t seem like a complete weirdo to his teammates for not having sex with broads and when this tragic relationship was leaked to the press because he’s a narcissist that adored the attention from the national media he took this storyline that he helped create and ran with it for as long as possible. This is on him for either being an asshole or a total rube.
January 19th, 2013 at 3:11 PM
Let’s just see what the bellweather Heisman writer had to say about Manti in early early early preseason for 2012:
2. Manti Te’o, LB, Notre Dame – Te’o has put together a fine career for the Irish and his return for a fourth season was somewhat of a surprise. The face of the Notre Dame defense, he’ll be counted on to help make up for the loss of talented defensive end Aaron Lynch. Te’o had 128 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 5 sacks and a forced fumble in 2011. Playing for Notre Dame always helps when it comes to the Heisman race, so it’s possible he’ll get some votes.
January 19th, 2013 at 3:13 PM
I think at first this relationship was created so he wouldn’t seem like a complete weirdo to his teammates for not having sex with broads
If we’re all gonna believe the Notre Dame student letter, he was going around with girls on campus all the time. This one just seems like a wholesome narrative to push his name as a character guy and it kind of got away from him just a tad
January 19th, 2013 at 3:19 PM
Based on this phony relationship, I have a hard time seeing Manti as a lady’s man. But what the hell do I know as this point? Maybe he truly is and orchestrated this that he pounds chocolate milk like the Romney family and is holding out till marriage. I have no fucking clue.
January 19th, 2013 at 3:25 PM
I don’t think he has to be a lady’s man but he wasn’t a Collin Klein type, either. He might be a dorky guy but he was a pretty big name from his sophomore season on (apologies to whatever odd narrative it is that says a guy who was honorable mention All-America as a sophomore is unheralded) so it wouldn’t take much more than him just saying “OK” to get laid.
January 19th, 2013 at 3:25 PM
He was listed as the second best defensive guy who would have a chance to affect the Heisman race, not as a guy who would have a chance to win it, and as the guy said, the name Notre Dame would help.
January 19th, 2013 at 3:28 PM
Like I said, he was a long, long shot. But that’s because he was a defensive player (see “The Heismandments” which were destroyed this season anyway by having a freshman win it) not because he was unknown.

FWIW, I’m not saying he made up the dead gf to win awards I’m just combatting the Kekua-level delusion that says he was unknown before the season and I will continue to argue that he wasn’t on any Heisman lists before the season because he was obviously considered one of the novelty candidates that gets thrown in just to cover all bases.
