I don’t enjoy the “I’m gonnna uncontrollably wail at this rubber ball as hard as I can. Even if it lands in some other fairway, I know I’m hitting no worse than 8i to the hole.”

A little finesse on the tee would be a welcome site.

Drivers should be limited to 425 cc IMO. 460 is outrageous. The sweet spot is like a baseball bat

I’d say for the pros, 280-300cc is plenty, especially if you don’t deaden the ball.

It’ll be interesting to see what the R&A and PGA do. It seems they’re going to have to go the bifurcation route. There’s simply no room to make courses 8000 yards.

All I know is, when I downgraded from a Big Bertha-type oversized driver to an old-school Cleveland driver, I lost 40 yards off my drive.

I’ve seen it. Swing speeds are much more faster. The more modest sweet spot would necessitate more control but there is no way a club would last if you let Tiger, Rory and whomever take a 200 ball practice session with a persimmon driver. Thing would be shot in a week. If not sooner.

I agree with all of that. I was just simply stating if you wanted to assess the players’ skill with old equipment, give them a fair envirionment to exercise their skill. Otherwise by having them play a modern course with old clubs, it would more of an exercise in punishment than actual evaluation.

I completely agree some of the modern architecture is a response to the clubs. The players are just using what’s out there though and becoming more skilled. Fault is on the governing bodies not the players.

Some of these courses are tricked up as much as the clubs.

Courses really started getting tricked-up in response to the technology that rendered many of them obsolete (we’ll probably see that at Merion). Green complexes started getting ridiculous in response to nearly every hole being driver-wedge. There has to be some penalty for a bad shot.

meh. While I don’t disagree with you, the degree to which this is true is exaggerated somewhat by the players and analysts to downplay the clear equipment advantages gained.

I dont mind the fast greens, I’m just saying if you had a tournament and made them use old equipment and old golf balls. The absurdity of some of the green complexes and such.

The fast greens are probably my favorite part of the modern game. Always enjoyable to see pros struggle and whine about slow greens in Britain too.
