Tiger Woods Misses Cut After Two Fans Help Earn Him a Two-Stroke Penalty
Tiger Woods missed the fairway on 5th hole at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship today. As you can see, these were not ideal golf conditions. So Tiger invited another golfer – Martin Kaymer – to come inspect the lie. Tiger thought the ball was embedded and deserved a drop. Kaymer concurred.
So Tiger took his drop, hit the ball back into more golf-able conditions and continued on with his round. At the 11th hole, course officials informed Tiger that he had committed a rules violation. As you can see, Tiger’s shot after the drop on the 5th kicked up quite a bit of dirty / dusty particulates. Well, a couple fans approached officials and ratted on Tiger, saying he shouldn’t have been allowed a drop because the area was “sandy.” Tiger was assessed a two-stroke penalty which dropped his score from +1 to +3, causing him to miss the cut.
Tiger didn’t say much about the ruling after the round, but he did leave officials with this, per Guyism:
“No, that’s why I called Martin over, to make sure we thought it was embedded. So I had a player come over and verify it and um, evidently I broke a rule.”
If you’re keeping track at home, this week, Tiger is NOT back. Got that? Tiger Woods is NOT back.

Rory missed the cut, too.
Mickelson is presumably dead.

Snitches get stitches. But seriously, I’m just happy Elin may be back in our lives.

I don’t get this…why can fans go over and complain to officials about a rules infraction committed by a player but the player can not ask officials for advice prior to said infraction?
January 18th, 2013 at 11:10 AM
not playing in this tournament, he’s playing the Humana, presumably out trolling for chicks with Bill Clinton.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:11 AM
from what I read about it, apparently the rules are pretty clear about a ball being embedded in a sandy area as opposed to a mowed area.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:12 AM
Would love to see this in other sports, where a fan can call rules violations in real time. Wouldn’t need instant replay…

Mickelson is presumably dead.
His wife got tired of his breasts hitting her in the face during sex and so she smothered him with a down pillow.

Or what ark said…could be either.

they try to be absolute about the rules so this shit happens but very sketchy; he’s laughing anyway, got an appearance fee and dont have to play the weekend. I’m not a huge Tiger fan but would give him the ruling question 100 percent of the time.
It’s in the middle east – of course it’s fucking sandy!
January 18th, 2013 at 11:13 AM
Or keeping Clinton away from his.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:14 AM
That area neither looks sandy nor mowed.

She was just jealous he has tits
/cancer jokes aren’t funny
January 18th, 2013 at 11:15 AM
They’re in fucking Abu Dhabi – I’d say the entire fucking area is “sandy”.

If anyone knows if the bush has been mowed or not it’s Tiger. Only guy who could’ve had a better eye was Wilt and he ain’t talking….

Tiger got like $3 million to play in this tourney. Don’t think he was too concerned about it.

You know that Tiger-Rory TV commericial is a hoax, right? Two of them didn’t even film it together!
January 18th, 2013 at 11:18 AM
… which means some sponsor was super pissed at that fan and official.

That’s geology-ist.

he could have called in a rules official before he hit the shot to ask about the rule but chose not to do so.

I support cancer.

Yep, he called his scorekeeper.

Well played.

I have some advice for Tiger … hit it straighter; the rules are much clearer.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:35 AM
That’s not funny. You’re not funny.

As bad as pro misses are nowadays even with the equipment, i’d love to see them play with old persimmon drivers – they’d be 90 degrees off the tee. They should do one tourney a year like that. Old drivers and balls, play them from the tips.

I could really get behind this.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:42 AM
Not very realistic for some courses. Probably play them 6700 yards.
Every once in a while I break out this set my dad had in the basement, of these Jack Nicklaus clubs with wooden-head woods, and cast blade irons. Those woods are fucking impossible to hit with. I basically just take a baseball swing as hard as I can and am lucky to consistently hit it 200-220.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:43 AM
Couple things. I have no idea why Tiger didn’t consult an official. Also, why would he get a drop for the ball embedding in that shit? It’s not wet, so not a plug. Seems to me he should’ve taken an unplayable. Apparently there are some strange rules for strange UAE conditions.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:46 AM
Someone I was playing with told me “there are no bad lies in the fairway” when I had a lie issue/discrepancy once. Thanks, bud. Needless to say, I wanted to hit him with my five iron.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:46 AM
These guys would shatter the facing and the wrapping at the hosel on some of these clubs with their current swings (speeds). You’d also have to be fair and tone down the green speed. Some of these courses are tricked up as much as the clubs. The green complexes, etc.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:48 AM
manti’d
January 18th, 2013 at 11:49 AM
The fast greens are probably my favorite part of the modern game. Always enjoyable to see pros struggle and whine about slow greens in Britain too.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:52 AM
Listening and laughing at Rick Reilly on The Herd right now. He said he had a “man to man” relationship with Armstrong
January 18th, 2013 at 11:53 AM
I dont mind the fast greens, I’m just saying if you had a tournament and made them use old equipment and old golf balls. The absurdity of some of the green complexes and such.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:56 AM
The only way I’d laugh at something Reilly said was if he pronounced it like Raftery…”mantoman”
January 18th, 2013 at 11:59 AM

meh. While I don’t disagree with you, the degree to which this is true is exaggerated somewhat by the players and analysts to downplay the clear equipment advantages gained.
January 18th, 2013 at 12:00 PM
These guys would shatter the facing and the wrapping at the hosel on some of these clubs with their current swings (speeds).
And I’m not really sure if I believe this.
January 18th, 2013 at 12:03 PM
Rick Reilly
The absolute example of over-inflated windbag.
January 18th, 2013 at 12:06 PM
Courses really started getting tricked-up in response to the technology that rendered many of them obsolete (we’ll probably see that at Merion). Green complexes started getting ridiculous in response to nearly every hole being driver-wedge. There has to be some penalty for a bad shot.
January 18th, 2013 at 12:12 PM
I agree with all of that. I was just simply stating if you wanted to assess the players’ skill with old equipment, give them a fair envirionment to exercise their skill. Otherwise by having them play a modern course with old clubs, it would more of an exercise in punishment than actual evaluation.
I completely agree some of the modern architecture is a response to the clubs. The players are just using what’s out there though and becoming more skilled. Fault is on the governing bodies not the players.
January 18th, 2013 at 12:17 PM
And I’m not really sure if I believe this.
I’ve seen it. Swing speeds are much more faster. The more modest sweet spot would necessitate more control but there is no way a club would last if you let Tiger, Rory and whomever take a 200 ball practice session with a persimmon driver. Thing would be shot in a week. If not sooner.
January 18th, 2013 at 12:20 PM
All I know is, when I downgraded from a Big Bertha-type oversized driver to an old-school Cleveland driver, I lost 40 yards off my drive.
January 18th, 2013 at 12:22 PM
It’ll be interesting to see what the R&A and PGA do. It seems they’re going to have to go the bifurcation route. There’s simply no room to make courses 8000 yards.
January 18th, 2013 at 12:24 PM
The more modest sweet spot would necessitate more control
… which is part of my original point: hit it straighter.
January 18th, 2013 at 12:25 PM
Drivers should be limited to 425 cc IMO. 460 is outrageous. The sweet spot is like a baseball bat
January 18th, 2013 at 12:27 PM
I’d say for the pros, 280-300cc is plenty, especially if you don’t deaden the ball.
January 18th, 2013 at 12:28 PM
*USGA, not PGA
January 18th, 2013 at 12:30 PM
Heck, anything that’ll have PGA pros (other than corey pavin) have to hit a 5 iron into a par 4 again.
January 18th, 2013 at 1:35 PM
47-50 – agreed.
I don’t enjoy the “I’m gonnna uncontrollably wail at this rubber ball as hard as I can. Even if it lands in some other fairway, I know I’m hitting no worse than 8i to the hole.”
A little finesse on the tee would be a welcome site.
