Cleveland Browns Hire NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi
The Cleveland Browns got their man in NFL Network analyst and former league executive Michael Lombardi. According to Adam Schefter, the team has hired Lombardi with the title “Vice President of Player Personnel”, though he is not bringing Nick Saban with him. Lombardi had been rumored to be in the running a month ago, and we knew from his past that Josh McDaniels was one of his leading candidates if he had the opportunity.
The Browns already hired Rob Chudzinski, so Michael Lombardi won’t be making any head coaching hires yet. He is, though, back in the NFL and back in Cleveland, where he worked as Director of Player Personnel for a decade, until the franchise moved to Baltimore. He last worked in the NFL in Oakland, where he served as Senior Personnel Executive until 2007.

I assume his celebratory party will include off color corn chips and Nick Noltes finest work.

HA HA HA!!!
The suckage from the Browns organization looks to be continued for a long time.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:47 AM
So what makes him such a bad hire? Going by this board, he doesn’t seem to have a lot of supporters.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:47 AM
Unrelated, but this made me laugh.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:50 AM
I think a lot of it is that people like to shit on the Browns.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:50 AM
Welp, if you are a Browns fan, no matter what you might think of Lombardi, you need to hope that Lombardi has final say on personnel as opposed to say, Joe Banner. If Banner sticks to doing contracts and managing the cap, it might actually work out OK.

Have you not looked at his hair?

I’m happy about this. In two years when he is fired he will have fresh insights to share on the BS Report.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:56 AM
That’s okay.. apparently people on twitter think the Patriots are getting the #6 overall pick for Mallett. Other (Patriots fans) on twitter, would turn down the pick, thinking he has more value than that. Or that he’s that sure of a thing.
Personally, I think they need to give Weeden another shot, bring in Hoyer for competition, jettison McCoy and then maybe consider trading for Mallett next year. I don’t see them doing it, but my guess is a 3rd this year and 2nd next if they do make the trade.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:57 AM
Lombardi has already been with the Browns once. He was a MASSIVE failure as the GM. Massive as in total and complete. His list of draft picks described a who’s who of busts and guys that were wasted picks (especially later in the draft).
If he’s so fucking good, why on Earth has he been on TV for the last 5 years. It’s not because he was comfortable there and teams were banging on his door every year.
This is just a colossally bad move and yet one so God Damn typical as a Browns’ fan.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:58 AM
Of course, I thought the Bills did great by keeping Fitzpatrick around and building around him before making a decision on paying a high price for a QB. They did all that, except gave him an extension too…

January 18th, 2013 at 10:59 AM
I believe he is already being flushed in Arizona. Once it starts spinning their is no stopping it. Maybe in 3 years you can sign him off an Arena team.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:59 AM
He’s lazy.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:59 AM
He has stated multiple times that if he had been hired by the 49ers the first move he would have made is to trade for Hoyer.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:59 AM
He was with BB, who did okay after the Browns. I assume he has continued to learn from BB after Cleveland. If anything you have to look at how he did in Oakland, which was okay considering who the owner was. It’s a new owner, I don’t think you can automatically say this is a terrible move.
/it probably is though
January 18th, 2013 at 10:59 AM
My coworker, who is from Cleveland, says the city is going nuts over this decision.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:59 AM
Exactly. Charlie Casserly just brings the heat on a daily basis.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:00 AM
Exactly my thoughts. Excited for this
January 18th, 2013 at 11:00 AM
Exhibit A of Lombardi’s drafting prowess. This is not for the faint of heart.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:00 AM
Link? That’s preposterous.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:01 AM
Damn. He may have been their best QB this year, with that one almost mediocre game he had for them against a good 49ers defense.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:01 AM
Exactly. Charlie Casserly just brings the heat on a daily basis.
He looks like he owns a windowless van.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:02 AM
With any luck he’ll put on some more weight by then so the heavy breathing will become even more pronounced
January 18th, 2013 at 11:02 AM
can you blame them? Browns organization is atrocious. Feel bad for the fans.
I give Lombardi 4 years and a total of 15 wins before he gets canned.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:02 AM
Geez, if your best late round pick is Doug Gabriel, that’s not good. There’s a whoooooole lot of no-names in that list.

I did say “Patriots fans” right? That should explain it.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:05 AM
Wait, Tommy Vardell was the 9th overall pick in a draft of collegiate football players?
January 18th, 2013 at 11:05 AM
This would be like if the Vikings brought back Denny Green. People would not be happy.

Unrelated, but the guy over at SI’s Hot Clicks got an email from Maria Menounos with some photos from some restaurant in Vegas. Here’s a fun one of Menounos, Stacy Kiebler, and Kate Upton.

We Browns fans heard he was once referred to as “Touchdown Tommy”, but we think it was just a tall tale or irony.

You’d have to fake laugh at that in person even though it is ridiculously stupid.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:12 AM
And, to be fair to Ernie Accorsi, he owned the Browns drafts until 1991 when Lombardi ran him out on a rail and took over. That’s when the drafts REALLY got ugly.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:12 AM
The 2000 season summed up his regime perfectly. High powered offense, zero defense, totally soft team, had an 11-2 record before finishing 0-3 yet still somehow backing into a bye. Lucking out into the Rams getting upset by the Saints. Then came 41-0. He’s the worst.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:12 AM
Missed that yesterday. Probably because I went home at 3:45 because of inclement weather.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:13 AM
He went way too high in my fantasy football draft that next year. My buddy could always be counted on to “reach” for white running backs.
/there actually used to be a few of those scattered about.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:13 AM
1992 was not a good draft for RB’s:
9. Vardell
19. Tony Smith
21. Vaughn Dunbar
45. Amp Lee
48. Siran Stacy
Best of the group was Edgar Bennett who went #103.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:13 AM
That’s quite a list. I’m not a huge Lombardi fan, but how much of his draft record in Oakland is him and how much has to do with the sway the Crypt Keeper apparently still had in the draft?
Also…my favorite name from the Lombardi draft list:
Thane Gash would be a cool name for a movie villain.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:14 AM

Thane Gash would be a cool name for a movie villain.
And Amp Lee would be his Asian hitman.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:15 AM
He was pretty bad in Arizona coaching wise but he drafted them a lot of talent that Whisenhunt turned into that Superbowl run.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:15 AM
Lombardi and Simmons were fawning all over themselves about Brian Hoyer with no visibly proof that the guy was any good outside of preseason games and mo up time. Now he’s fawning over Mallett with no proof. It’s like Lombardi hasn’t seen Matt Cassell play recently.
Lombardi even said last week that Seattle’s loss was more surprising or shocking than Denver’s. WHAT. Flacco threw a 70 yard bomb with Rahim Moore vomiting on himself. Can’t take this dude seriously. Nothing I’ve seen says great personnel guy.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:15 AM
LEGEND…if the field was in any sort of disrepair he was guaranteed to rule the day
January 18th, 2013 at 11:16 AM
The Eagles took Tony Brooks from ND that year in addition to Siran Stacy.
Both of those picks came before Edgar Bennett.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:16 AM
Lombardi gives Belichick what … a 3rd for Mallett? A 4th and 6th?
Isn’t this the year the Patriots don’t have a million draft picks?
January 18th, 2013 at 11:18 AM
Amp Lee > Edgar Bennett. Take that to the bank.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:20 AM
I think a lot of it is that people like to shit on the Browns.
No, he is a terrible evaluator of talent. He will be a disaster. The list of draft choices he drove for the Browns is heinous. Plus, he fucks people over – drove Ernie Accorsi out of town with some backstabbing. Fucking Machiavelian asshole that fucks people over for power. Scott Pioli type. The only person from The Hoodie’s old staff that was out of football front offices. Nobody would cut him a job. That’s why he and Al Davis got along – discussed crazy batshit theories and methods.
This guy is a fucking loser. Joe Banner has zero ability to analyze players, but I hope this hire is a move to have a puppet employee. Because there is no way Banner could be worse than Lombardi. NONE.
He was destroying Heckert for taking Josh Gordon last year. Go look at some of his commentery there. Fucking piecce of shit moron this guy.
In conclusion: We’re fucked.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:20 AM
Just one in each of the first 3 rounds, and a couple really late ones.
If they’re not trading him for a 1st, really what’s the point, they’d probably just use a later round pick to get another QB, since they dont have anyone else on their roster.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:21 AM
A reliable source told me they have 12.
I don’t think the Pats unload Mallett for less than a 2nd. They paid a 3rd, and still have a chance to increase his value over the next year+
January 18th, 2013 at 11:22 AM
A google search leads me to believe, “They’ll, as usual, have a dozen draft picks.”
Source:http://www.thebiglead.com/index.php/2012/11/29/tyrann-mathieu-declares-for-the-nfl-draft-but-how-many-more-times-will-he-be-arrested-before-april/
January 18th, 2013 at 11:22 AM
Which is why we thought he would be good.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:23 AM
They should probably just trade Mallet for Colt so that the Patriots’ dynasty won’t skip a beat when Brady retires.
/hook ‘em
January 18th, 2013 at 11:24 AM
I’ve said all year, and CJ seems to agree… they need to have him as a backup, and if they like him and he knows the system, he’s way more valuable to them unproven, than to anyone else.
I’d take a high 2nd, but apparently CLE doesn’t have one. Could entice me with one of their young WRs though…
January 18th, 2013 at 11:24 AM
NFLN getting ready to show the Lombardi presser. Should be startin’ soon.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:25 AM
If the Browns trade Weeden for Mallett or Hoyer, I might throw all my family’s browns shit in a bag and mail it to the Browns. I wouldn’t even let a homeless person wear it. I cant even call him a dumbfuck, its not even demeaning enough. Fuck you Lombardi.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:26 AM
My nomination for worst year:
1995 1 30 Craig Powell LB
1995 3 84 Eric Zeier QB
1995 3 94 Mike Frederick DE
1995 5 136 Tau Pupua DT
1995 5 147 Mike Miller WR
1995 7 231 A.C. Tellison WR
January 18th, 2013 at 11:26 AM
Based on that, I’d say Lombardi is adept at drafting punters and placekickers.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:31 AM
Exhibit A of Lombardi’s drafting prowess. This is not for the faint of heart.
I’ve seen this list many times. It’s just as frightening each time I see it. Good god.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:39 AM
It’s a new owner, I don’t think you can automatically say this is a terrible move.
It’s a terrible move. There I said it.

Is Haslam from the deep South? He sounds like either a footbaw coach or Baptist preacher.

Haslam is from the family that starting Flying J travel stations. His brother is the governor of TN.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:47 AM
Dang, deep pockets then.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:49 AM
Given the pool of quality candidates out there, this pick has zero justification. All good faith in ownership and management is negated.
I don’t know who the worst NFL talent evaluator in the NFL used to be, but today, he is now the #2 worst NFL talent evaluator in the league.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:54 AM
I’m not in Flying J territory. Would owning that really make him rich by NFL owner standards? It’s a league with Blank, Allen, Snyder, Johnson, Jerrah, Kroenke, Ford, etc.
January 18th, 2013 at 11:56 AM
Bunch of ‘em along interstates in the south & midwest. Nice-sized complexes for personal vehicles, big rigs, etc. Been in a few of ‘em. They turn over a few bucks.

USC, it’s one of the largest privately held companies in the USA. Multi-billion family with inelastic revenue stream. He’s not too leveraged by the purchase. I wouldn’t say he’s one of the uber-wealthy but definitely wealthy enough. Not stretched thin and a constant revenue stream.
January 18th, 2013 at 12:56 PM
