Alema Te’o, Uncle of Manti Te’o, Had a “Bad Feeling” About Hoax Mastermind Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, Hints at Potential Money Scam Tied to Leukemia Victims
It appears we could be getting close to a motive in the Manti Te’o hoax, at least according to the Te’o family: Money.
In a lengthy interview with 1280 The Zone (listen here), Alema Te’o, the uncle of the Notre Dame linebacker, talks about meeting the mastermind behind the hoax, Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, after the USC/Notre Dame game in November 2012. Almost from the beginning, Alema catches Tuiasosopo in a big lie, but doesn’t expose him. (“I wish I would have blew that guy up right then and there,” he tells the hosts.)
Tuiasosopo told Alema Te’o that he had been helping out at Troy Polamalu’s football camp on the music side. This floored Alema because he knew the camp well – he was the Camp Director. “He said he was at the hotel, doing entertainment, doing this, doing that … it wasn’t true. I was thinking in my mind, ‘no, you didn’t.’”
Alema left the gathering and said he quickly phoned Brian Te’o, Manti’s father, to make him aware of the shady Tuiasosopo. Brian then made Manti aware of of the lies, and based on what Alema tells the hosts, cuts ties with Tuiasosopo.
If you’re making a timetable at home, the USC/Notre Dame game was Nov. 24th; on Dec. 6th, Manti got the call from his fake/dead girlfriend’s cell phone.
Alema said Tuiasosopo, when talking about helping someone with leukemia, used the phrase, “rally together to cover the cost of this guy’s education,” and then it hit him: Tuiasosopo was just “trying to get close to Manti and plant some seeds for the future.” [1280 The Zone via David; photo via Deadspin]

interesting…where’s roger mcdowell been in all this? te’o and newman were heckling him the whole NC game.

January 18th, 2013 at 9:45 AM
Aren’t there far easier and less time consuming ways to scam someone than to fake a 3 year online-only relationship, with endless phone calls, etc. ?
January 18th, 2013 at 9:46 AM
Yeah, nice try, dear uncle. But this story is full of shit.

But why make a phone call then and blow your cover? It would appear as if this had been working, don’t see the reason to call it off

January 18th, 2013 at 9:53 AM
I haven’t seen reason in any explination defending Te’o so far. Although the media slobs are rushing to this “charity scam” story because it makes their own look not as bad, and because it appears to make Te’o seem all innocent. That’s what they want, they want that to be the truth so bad.
January 18th, 2013 at 9:53 AM
So who was the girl on the phone?
January 18th, 2013 at 9:53 AM
Maybe a real life girl was getting her talons dug into Mantei and his 1st round paycheck. So he shot the hostage.
January 18th, 2013 at 9:54 AM
I mean it’s looking more and more likely that’s possible. Although pretty sure fake online girls > real ND girls from what I’ve seen via my ND friends.
January 18th, 2013 at 9:56 AM
Thamel’s flunkies, especially Mandel, are running with this.
January 18th, 2013 at 9:56 AM
You put anybody besides Michael Bay in charge of that movie, it gets better reviews. I thought the concept and the story were excellent. Execution not so much.
January 18th, 2013 at 9:56 AM
Sounds like whoever was playing the part of Lennay is the one who called him. Maybe against Ronaiah’s wishes?
January 18th, 2013 at 9:56 AM
Agreed, once it became just another loud chase movie the dream was dead

I’m wondering why Te’o's dad is named Brian…
January 18th, 2013 at 10:00 AM
I think we all know that the seeds were successfully planted.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:00 AM
If Manti and Ronaiah were friends and tweeted at each other that they needed to hang out soon. And if Te’o gave Ronaiah a special pass for the ND USC game….then I don’t buy that Te’o could be duped by him and not know it was him. Also, the Te’o family is full of shit. Especially Brian.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:00 AM
How much of the support for Te’o by 35+ year old sportswriters stem from the fact that they didn’t grow up with social media? Perhaps they simply can’t understand why not doing facetime or skype with your “girlfriend” is odd.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:01 AM
I love 2.5 hour commercials. That was as good as Johannsen was ever going to look in a movie though. Jordan 2 Delta I love you.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:01 AM
Have you seen him?
January 18th, 2013 at 10:03 AM
that’s what i was thinking
January 18th, 2013 at 10:05 AM
It’s infuriating that Thamel and others didn’t do their jobs months ago, and are failing to them again now. Mandel is my favorite CFB writer, but his take has been extremely disappointing. I would expect him to use common sense and think for himself, not back his SI buddy with blind faith.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:08 AM
If Tuiasosopo was that loose with the facts in conversing with the uncle of his supposed mark, I have a hard time believing he could keep up a long-con for 3+ years. Makes no sense.
Still does not explain why Te’o just accepted that his girlfriend was “dead” in September and made no efforts to meet her family or go to her grave site for 3 months. Te’o looks like an asshole whether Lennay was real or imagined.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:08 AM

Precisely. It’s the same ridiculous view as someone thinking that Obama’s birth certificate was faked, with the long goal of having him become president as some kind of Manchurian candidate, as if that’s an easy goal to attain.
Similarly, who was to know 3+ years ago that Te’o was going to be a Heisman finalist?

Jason, would you mind giving your experiences with fact checking? It has been my experience that it’s part of “the system”, and not one that can or should be circumvented. If it can, it calls in to question the banner under which they’re writing, which in this case is Sports Illustrated, as much as it does the writer, Thamel. If it can be circumvented, ostensibly based on a writer saying, “Yeah, it’s all good, bro.”, then why I have fact checking in the first place?
I specifically recall having an SI third-party fact checker follow up with me (over something humorously verifiable), which is why I say it seems as if it’s part of the journalism process and system.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:18 AM

January 18th, 2013 at 10:24 AM
Bottom line, any explanation that any of us try to come up with for this situation immediately falls apart because someone digs up interview of Te’o contradicting what you came up with. That’s why this story is so fascinating.

January 18th, 2013 at 10:25 AM
So Tuiasopo makes a fake chick to gets close to Teo, gives the chick Leukemia and kills her, while having in mind to set up a fake Leukimia charhity? then Teo goes to the NFL he’ll give money to the fake Leukemia charity? Is that how this thing works?
Why not just pay a real skank to get close to Teo, seems like that would be a more successful extortion.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:25 AM
This is going to develop into a new, uniquely American syndrome. Kind of like how “fat” is a disability at places like Disneyworld. Or every kid that acts up has ADD. Or every psycho that goes on a shooting spree is a victim of their parents owning guns (did I get that one right?. It will be forever more known as Manti Te’o Syndrome where the sufferer is addicted to his fake online girlfriend that everyone must acknowledge in order to ease the emotional stress that would be caused by losing said fake girlfriend. They’ll have their own color of handicap parking tags, get to board Southwest flights after A1-A15 have boarded, and get 20 minutes a day in school to leave class to write emails that inevitably bounce back due to a failed address.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:27 AM
Jason – I have pretty much given up hope of ever piecing this thing together on my own; mainly because it isn’t worth the effort. I would, however, love for one of you guys to maybe piece together a timeline with some links at some point when this thing slows down or concludes. How’d you come up with this number? The two major stories out right now of people falling for internet hoaxes both happened to kids in their 20′s (Catfish, Te’o). Most 35-40 year olds are on facebook and twitter and use social media all the time. Just because they didn’t “grow up with social media” doesn’t mean they’re unfamiliar with it and could identify with being easily duped into a relationship with a fake person.
January 18th, 2013 at 10:27 AM
Very hot. No Jordan 2 Delta though. Although Woody Allen and Michael Bay could go toe to toe in the creepy director shots.

See the issue, Te’o thought she had Leukemia. What the catfish said though was Lennay had “Leukemaehia” – a Hawaian term meaning “not existing”. Shit then spiraled out of control.

DK, I am an ND fan and I don’t completely believe his story. I believe he could have been duped over the internet. I think many of the details he provided in his SI story were lies. I would have a small amount of sympathy for him if it turned out he was gay and was using this relationship to hide his sexuality. It’s sad when people feel they have to hide who they are to escaping bullying and ridicule. I still think the guy is a fucking moron, and the university choosing to comment on this story was an even more moronic move.
