Matt Masifilo, Former Stanford Lineman, Believes Manti Te’o Was a Victim
Got to believe Te’o was the victim here.He would always ask us if we knew his mystery girl after we’d play them….
— Matthew Masifilo (@MMasifilo) January 17, 2013
Matt Masifilo, a former Stanford defensive end, tweeted this defense of Te’o last night. He graduated Stanford in 2012 and was undrafted (in November, the Bucs signed him).
Anyone surprised we’ve heard nothing on-the-record from any Notre Dame players? Surely they can add something to this, right? A staunch defense of their emotional leader? Siding with their captain?
Which camp are you in? Manti Te’o was part of the dead girlfriend hoax, or Manti Te’o was the victim of a cruel, cruel prank? [Yahoo's Pat Forde has already made a decision.]
As new layers of the story peel off daily – hourly? – you’ll probably change your mind a few times.

Taken 3 being rushed into production. It is tentatively titled “Taken3-the search for Lennay Kekua”.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:35 AM
And that’s supposed to insinuate what exactly?
January 17th, 2013 at 10:36 AM
Wow, impressive collection of links. I’m guessing it took longer to put them all in than to write the blurb?
January 17th, 2013 at 10:36 AM
Apparently they are planning to make a third film. For reasons I have yet to figure out.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:36 AM
Can’t get enough of this story. Not even gonna pretend to be too cool for school here. I just hope we get some answers. It’d be disappointing if Te’o dodges this issue.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:37 AM
nah, a simple copy paste. thanks for asking, though.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:37 AM
All I got out of the Pat Forde piece is that Pat Forde really likes Notre Dame.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:38 AM
I’m not sure about how much free time the players have when on the road, but they played their last game of the year at Stanford in 2011. How do you not find a way to meet up with her if you’re in town.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:39 AM
Because Taken2 made 140 million dollars and Liam is lonely.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:39 AM
The fourth installment will be titled Taken In and will be about the media coverage of Teo’s girlfriend saga.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:40 AM
I think people are looking at this the wrong way. It’s either 1) Te’o is crazy and deceived everybody or 2) Te’o is totally innocent and was hoaxed.
I think the answer is probably a little bit of both but probably has more to do with 3) Te’o has some emotional problems and 4) isn’t very bright.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:40 AM
Very few people believe in number. 2.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:41 AM
I have loved reading Pat Forde for years. I have lost all respect for Pat Forde after reading that slurp job today.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:41 AM
i dunno, ive always thought the answer was simply an unethical publicity stunt that got uncovered.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:41 AM
Well, I used to do this too when I met someone who went to the same school as a friend of mine. I guess it could have all been part of his masterplan, but it makes sense to me.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:42 AM
They generally don’t let idiots into Notre Dame.
Crazies maybe. Rapist’s yes. But not idiots.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:42 AM
I agree. I’m feeling a 2 year bowl ban for Notre Dame right now.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:42 AM
Got to believe Te’o was the victim here. He would always ask us if we knew his mystery girl after we’d play them….
I read this with the voice of the guy asking people if they’d seen his baseball from Something About Mary.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:43 AM
You’re missing Option 5: Te’o is in the closet.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:43 AM
Maybe. But why does the best player playing for the most high profile college football program (one of anyway) need anymore publicity?
January 17th, 2013 at 10:43 AM
This is in defense? Really? Seems like a not great sarcastic joke. You do know people on the internet use sarcasm.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:43 AM
i dunno…why did tim tebow?
January 17th, 2013 at 10:45 AM
Probably because he said he met her face to face. And his father said that she would come to the island to vacation with his Te’o.
If neither of those things were ever said I would actually be inclined to believe it. But the only reason his father would say that she came to the island was to further a lie or because his son told him she came to visit and he believed his son. Which means again, his son is lying. Since she never actually existed he can’t say he ever saw her with his own eyes.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:45 AM
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that Notre Dame has accepted thousands of idiots into their school over the years.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:45 AM
So he can try to steal the Heisman and get drafted earlier?
January 17th, 2013 at 10:46 AM
I’d believe 3 months of fake girlfriend, not 3 years.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:47 AM
That’s why Urb turned them down. They’d tolerate his felonious recruits, but not the dummies. However, Te’o and anyone who publicly relies on the god crutch, is in fact dumb.
/again, I’m looking at you Ray Lewis
January 17th, 2013 at 10:49 AM
So he can try to steal the Heisman and get drafted earlier?
EXACTLY
January 17th, 2013 at 10:49 AM
Maybe. But why does the best player playing for the most high profile college football program (one of anyway) need anymore publicity?
I love all the armchair Skip Bayless contrarians out there, basking in their moment of glory to look like critical thinkers, not realizing how naive and stupid they come off. Hee-haw!
January 17th, 2013 at 10:50 AM
Doesn’t Duke have a special major program to let basketball players remain eligible or is that just an urban legend? If such a thing exists I would imagine ND would have something along those lines to ensure not every player needs to meet their academic standards for the rest of the student body
January 17th, 2013 at 10:50 AM
“You called this number on a dead fictional girlfriend’s phone.”
/Departed’d
January 17th, 2013 at 10:51 AM
He wasn’t their best player, but all of his emotional speeches and receiving game balls definitely garnered publicity
January 17th, 2013 at 10:51 AM
Sure but I’d bet the football team has at least twice the “idiots per capita” of the rest of the school. Rapists too.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:52 AM
yes, it’s called English Major.
/shots fired
January 17th, 2013 at 10:52 AM
This and this.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:52 AM
If he’s smart enough to dupe people, he’s smart enough to recognize that the Heisman doesn’t easily translate to NFL success or draft stock.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:53 AM
It’s ironic that these guys are claiming Manti was duped while completely overlooking the idea that they themselves could have been duped by Manti.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:53 AM
You gotta find out if she’s a raging slut at Stanford right? Who better to ask than the football team or comp science majors.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:54 AM
Very few people believe in number. 2.
Probably because he said he met her face to face. And his father said that she would come to the island to vacation with his Te’o.

what’s crazy to think that if twisted folks do these hoaxes for ‘sport’ they would send someone to meetings with him and family? only hole is that the person sent would have to match the pictures of Reba used
/reba was in on it
January 17th, 2013 at 10:54 AM
If it is a hoax, I think we’ve learned that he doesn’t have the best critical thinking skills.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:54 AM
Doesn’t take an intricate plan. Just lie and wait for ESPN’s reporters to be too lazy to look into it. If he really was smart enough, this whole embarrassingly exposed thing wouldn’t be happening
January 17th, 2013 at 10:55 AM
I may be in the minority here, but I really feel like Steve McNair had something to do with this.
January 17th, 2013 at 10:56 AM

January 17th, 2013 at 10:58 AM
I’m taking prop bets. Who goes higher?
Te’o: +140
Matheiu: -180
January 17th, 2013 at 10:59 AM
was there more than 293 comments charlie. thats what i see
January 17th, 2013 at 10:59 AM
That crystallizes my problem with the whole “he wanted the Heisman really bad” angle. Would he have even been a Heisman candidate in a typical CFB year? So many teams were on probation (self-imposed or otherwise).
Wasn’t the dying Grandmother and “mormon at a Catholic college” enough of a unique Heisman angle?
The entire lie doesn’t make a damn bit of sense.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:02 AM
Only thing about the Deadspin story that gave me pause was Reba’s role in all of this. She says that she sent a picture out to one of her high school classmate while holding up a specific sign that he asked for. They weren’t in regular contact after graduating. Someone you’ve not been in contact with for a while sends you a message on facebook to send a photo with specific sign and you just do it?
January 17th, 2013 at 11:03 AM
Exactly. Wouldnt he have to be some kind of evil to use and add to the death of his grandmother for his own miniscule benefit? How could he possible think that was worth it? And to have the foresight to plan this out starting his freshman year? Really?
January 17th, 2013 at 11:03 AM
So he didn’t play this year, so this recollection goes back to last year and the 27 other times the term “always” implies?
January 17th, 2013 at 11:05 AM
Ha.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:06 AM
Let’s face it – the vast majority of college and pro football players, as well as the other sports, are absolute morons. Is this really any different than Dirk thinking his fiancee was pregnant, Jose Tabata’s wife (23 years his senior) claiming that a baby she abducted was his, etc.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:07 AM
If Te’o really was hoaxed, the media is entirely to blame for blowing the story up initially. It’d be like me claiming I lost my best friend if one of the commenters here died. The level of interaction would be comically comparable
January 17th, 2013 at 11:08 AM
I didn’t get that either.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:08 AM
Yes. The difference is proof of existence
January 17th, 2013 at 11:09 AM
Jesus H… Now sctrojans has me questioning if Brohm’s Grandparents really died.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:09 AM
This is true, and explains why the MSM covering Teo all season couldn’t add 2 and 2 together.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:10 AM
No one can be that dumb for that long. Except for BeetleJuice.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:10 AM
You sure are easily amused. Do you still fall for the old “I’ve got your nose” gag that parents play on their kids?
January 17th, 2013 at 11:10 AM
It would be funnier if that commenter was Queefer.

January 17th, 2013 at 11:12 AM
great gag.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:12 AM
Te’o called this girl “the love of his life”, he couldn’t figure out a way to see her at the place they met? After her “car accident” he didnt go see her, but he fell asleep with her on the phone everyday for four months while she was recovering from leukemia, or was it the accident …Total bullshit. He was in on this.
/Im not a detective, but Ive seen episodes of Law & Order
January 17th, 2013 at 11:13 AM
Aren’t you the guy who thought “No more shameless than ND declaring itself the best team in the country” would make several people laugh? Not really sure you should be throwing stones in the easily amused department.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:13 AM
Oxymoron, with emphasis on the moron.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:15 AM
I’m in the camp of despising those who take great thrill in the public humiliation of a kid at the expense of allowing the story to develop, as well as witnessing some blog attempt to gain the mainstream journalistic credibility and status, that ironically 99% of them were created as the supposed antithesis of, by throwing this story out there with incomplete and inconclusive evidence. They throw it out there, create the stir, and leave it up to the big boys to investigate and clean up.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:15 AM
Does anyone know what happened to him? Meant to ask this yesterday.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:15 AM
My favorite comment so far has been that this was weighing on Te’o's mind and was the reason he didn’t play well against Bama.
Also, SI and Pete Thamel have a vested interest in the forthcoming “investigation.” Whatever they say from here on out will be considered bullshit on equal footing with whatever Notre Dame or Te’o has to say.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:15 AM
Te’uh’o.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:17 AM

January 17th, 2013 at 11:17 AM
Next thing we will hear is that Te’o created the “Sandy Hook conspiracy”
January 17th, 2013 at 11:18 AM
Meh, I think she’s the one person who could plead gullible in this whole story. If all of these “journalists” bought in hook, line and sinker on the tragedy angle, who’s to say a young woman with a high school connection wouldn’t have too?
January 17th, 2013 at 11:18 AM
we need to groupsolve this!!
January 17th, 2013 at 11:18 AM
I tried to defend him last night a little bit, at least his story was plausible based on his interviews and what he (not the father said).
I’m starting to wonder if that actually might be true… wow.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:18 AM
The Stigs American Cousin is a commenter who excels at hating the site, and is even better at coming back every day. Well done, Slappy.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:19 AM
not really
January 17th, 2013 at 11:19 AM
I don’t buy that this was some publicity con job. Too compelling a story anyway, and why risk being caught?
I actually think the kid got hoaxed and played up the story out of embarrassment. Doesn’t excuse lying, but he is also but some horrible person.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:19 AM
fuck you, man. I met WWOS on Tuesday and it was BFF at first sight!
January 17th, 2013 at 11:19 AM
Manti was in on it. The best commentary I’ve read on it is Clay Travis on outkickthecoverage.com, he asks some good questions and presents some good explanations.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:19 AM
Former friend of this blog miketotheg asked Dietch on Twitter when he was going to link that story again as a means to shame Thamel and got back a snarky response…amazing how that guy longs for an ombudsman at ESPN again but won’t take up the mantle for his own organization
January 17th, 2013 at 11:20 AM
I’m with you, that’s a load of shit. I’m not as down on Te’o the player as most, based on the Bammer game. Tough to play ilb uphill like that, with Bammer easily moving the LOS
January 17th, 2013 at 11:20 AM
so aside from a double not matching reba’s pics, is it so crazy to think that the hoaxers are so meticulous that they couldn’t fool someone?

January 17th, 2013 at 11:21 AM
I want to know what the AD’s investigators found. If it is sometihng that makes the University look bad (it does), wouldn’t you want to “get” the guys behind it? Unless Teo is partly to blame, then the excuse of not releasing the findings make sense. That means they’re backing Teo which would be incredibly dumb
January 17th, 2013 at 11:22 AM
Was assuming ohheelyeah laughed too. That makes three!!
January 17th, 2013 at 11:22 AM
don’t worry Tim, he’s gone.
took out the trash early today. great, tremendous sports story and people want to shift the focus away from that and onto other crap.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:22 AM
TBL Nashville???
January 17th, 2013 at 11:22 AM
Yesterday I was fully convinced Te’o was in on this, but I now I could see the validity of the “He was duped, he then found out about it, then got embarrassed and went along with it” angle. This is probably what he’ll run with either way to cover up the lies. I guess to only was to completely absolve himself would be to make public all DMs/emails/etc. that he had with whoever was pretending to be her, which is not going to happen. Most of me still thinks he was in on it.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:23 AM
whats even more confusing is all the samoan/hawaiian names in this. i can tell who is who, and then i get odd cravings for spam and tuna.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:23 AM
LOL
January 17th, 2013 at 11:23 AM
Not sure I follow you. I think the story was fairly developed, and then all that we were told by the “big boys” over the last few months was exposed to not be true. “Some blog” was the only one that took time to actually look into some things that weren’t adding up. I don’t take any thrill in this, but I thought the Deadspin piece was fairly responsible, exhaustively researched, and on most levels, appropriate.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:24 AM
His new thing is claiming that he isn’t a sports media critic. He is a reporter who also covers sports media on the side. What a shitty way to sidestep any questions as to why he won’t go after people in his own organization. Say what you want about Skip and Rovell. Those guys are assholes. But at least they’re not sanctimonious assholes.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:24 AM

Hawaiian is right. They get angry if you call them Samoan or Polynesian, supposedly. This is all second hand from a friend who had family there. Don’t think I had the patience to actually talk to one
January 17th, 2013 at 11:30 AM
Kind of agree, and wouldn’t that sort of article be in TBL’s wheelhouse?
January 17th, 2013 at 11:30 AM
Completely agree. The utter lack of fact checking is really amazing. What ND serves up, the media gobbles up and asks for more.

listening to sports radio yetserday, the hosts mentioned that TBL was reporting that ESPN had known about the hoax for 10 days prior to yesterday. that made sense to me bc of the WWL ties TBL has, but now i think of it, i don;t see that as a post from yesterday

Could be, but this site is JMac’s baby and he does have the background to comment, which is what interests me.
From my own experience, I’ve had many fact checking follow up calls from 3rd parties. Yahoo Sports, SI, NY Times, you name it. But, if ND is allowed to shovel this shit, what else has been glossed over? #rapemurderscissorliftplummets
January 17th, 2013 at 11:36 AM
Was a big fan of her in FNL, but in “Nashville” she’s kind of anorexic and wearing ridiculous clothes, plus can’t sing at all (Hayden is pretty good, actually). But I wouldn’t mind bumping into either of them. Repeatedly.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:37 AM
I’ll throw my support behind this, as well. It’s a slam dunk for TBL, and far more interesting then “Did he or didn’t he know?”

I would have thought getting pasted in the Sugar Bowl was that trigger.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:38 AM
The media angle is coming. Patience.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:38 AM
Finding a use for me is an impossible task, but why did I get lumped with this?
January 17th, 2013 at 11:38 AM
Twitter. TBL claimed to have 2 sources saying that. My problem is the media dogs are responsible for f’ing this up and they are going to cover themselves. If I’m at ESPN, SI, etc., of course I’d want this to be a hoax so I could say I believed Te’o, a genuine dude, instead of, holy shit it was obvious and my entire WWL organization was fooled because I was too busy digging up dirt in dumpster in Birmingham, chasing Cam’s bagman, and I didn’t have time to fucking Google Te’o's dead girlfriend or Carson City, California.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:39 AM
Don’t talk about JMac’s baby.
/Dirt
I thought the opposite. I thought the whole piece came across as idiotic, and had the same poor standards of journalism and logic that caused this problem in the first place. Had no idea Travis was at Deadspin, and that’s the first thing by him I’ve read, but I won’t be reading any more.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:39 AM
Ritty – that post is coming.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:39 AM
I think that this was an Ace Ventura Einhorn realization with Charlie Weiss actually trolling as the girlfriend as a recruiting ploy (although if it wasn’t a beard, logic dictates kid should have committed to Stanford).
The glory….
January 17th, 2013 at 11:39 AM
You are the resident expert on all things Brian Kelly and Declan Sullivan
January 17th, 2013 at 11:40 AM
we need to groupsolve this!!
Groupsolve has just been placed alongside “staycation” and “webinar” terms that no self-respecting adult should use.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:40 AM
My only request… be fair, but no question marks. If ESPN sat on something or had alternative motives, flat-out accuse them of it. We’ve got your back.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:40 AM
What did you think of “Supernatural” last night? Let me know if you didn’t watch it yet.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:40 AM
I’m hoping you go scorched earth. Pull out all the stops, J-Mac.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:41 AM
Seconded.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:41 AM
The angriest person I’ve ever met was a dude from Guam. He hated, hated ‘Murica and ‘Muricans.
For some reason, he made an exception for me: “You’re all right.” It was like a moment out of Repo Man.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:41 AM
St. Bear – Duffy is writing that one. there are many layers to these story, many stories to be told, we could use more writers.
Plus, Duffy is far more eloquent than me.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:43 AM
It’s on the DVR. I was busy watching the Mavs and getting liquored up last night.
I see it’s a Benny episode, so I’m looking forward to it. Not so much the Amelia part.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:43 AM
Cool. Looking forward to it. Somebody drop me a twitter mention so I’m not late to the party.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:44 AM
I misread that as “many lawyers.” That probably would not be far from the truth.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:44 AM
Actually, if Hayden is coming, it’s fine with me if the rest of you don’t even bother showing up.
you’ll need help filling that klitschko chasm no?
January 17th, 2013 at 11:45 AM
/pats self on back
January 17th, 2013 at 11:45 AM
Actually, sadly not much Benny.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:45 AM
you know, you too can buy a thesaurus.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:46 AM
This would be closer to the truth, but I really must let Sousedbergin claim that honor.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:47 AM
Hopefully he’s using the down time to work on his Louisiana accent.
Hey, ritty, you hook up yet with the USC Twitter chick?
January 17th, 2013 at 11:47 AM
TBL – serious question, did you have ANY idea something like this was going on with Teo? I mean, anyhting at all.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:48 AM
The old “hotdog in the CERN superconductor” meme, eh?
January 17th, 2013 at 11:48 AM

January 17th, 2013 at 11:50 AM
I’ve seen no evidence of this claim
January 17th, 2013 at 11:52 AM
Ha ha. Nope, you guys successfully creeped her out though.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:53 AM
you telling me TBL treats his twits better than us, ritty?
January 17th, 2013 at 11:53 AM
Where’s this Richard Jones we keep hearing about?
January 17th, 2013 at 11:54 AM
And to follow up from my confusion yesterday, I asked my wife what she thought of Ryan Gosling, and she had no idea who he was. So I’m counting that one as a win.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:56 AM
Everyone knows the commenters put on airs.
January 17th, 2013 at 11:57 AM
Makes me wonder what else she’s lying to you about.
/but i’m sure she’s telling the truth
//unless she isn’t

// Huff was too soon, leaves in a minute and a huff
January 17th, 2013 at 12:04 PM
we could use more writers.
what about the interns? one of the deadspin team was a college kid on break
January 17th, 2013 at 12:07 PM
Deadspin drew it’s conclusion based on an unidentified friend who is 80% sure that Te’o was complicit in this hoax based on the assumption that Te’o wouldn’t be stupid enough to fall for this hoax for a whole year, and Tuiouaso….whatever… wouldn’t be smart enough to carry it out for a year. Nice basis. The biggest lesson that needs to come from this is twitter or other social networks aren’t for everyone. You have to be careful of who or the number of people you allow into your life, especially if you lack the social sophistication and experiences that would allow you to discern what’s coming at you.
January 17th, 2013 at 12:09 PM
my take.
January 17th, 2013 at 12:12 PM
Disagree on this- there was a plethora of information presented that was not necessarily conclusive, but certainly damning. Intelligent individuals can draw their own conclusions. The point remains, they are the only ones that opened their eyes and did some actual research.
I couldn’t agree more on this though. Well said.
