In Texas, for the most part, you can buy beer and wine in grocery stores and gas stations. But liquor is only available in liquor stores. I’ve never seen an exception to this anywhere in Texas outside of dry areas where you can’t buy shit.

My father and stepmother lived there and still have a house there. I actually took driver’s ed in Tyler during the summer I was 16.

Yeah, there are things about Texas that really piss me off. The statewide blue laws (and local dry laws) are probably the biggest thing. If you live in Tyler, Texas, population around 100,000 and want a bottle of scotch, you have to drive your ass for 25 minutes or so down the highway to Coffee City, which is just across the county line, to stock up there. There’s also only like one bar in the entire city.

Why?

Because he’s a good coach who never finished with less than 7 wins after his first year despite being handed a less than stellar crop of players every year via free agency and the draft.

Lovie Smith’s 9 year tenure with the Bears was far from exceptional, but it was certainly the best post-Ditka coaching run by a longshot. Lovie guided a team quarterbacked by Rex Grossman to a Super Bowl berth. They were pathetic to watch offensively for almost all 9 years, which is partially his fault of course, but his defenses were always prepared to play and stuck to the scheme he implemented.

It’s possible. Coach’s jobs were probably a lot less defined than they are now. I don’t anybody thought of him as a great offensive mind when the Bears hired him.
