Chip Kelly is the New Coach of the Philadelphia Eagles
All, College Football, NFL January 16th. 2013, 12:03pm
Chip Kelly is the new coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports. [UPDATE: Jay Glazer is saying the same, so Mort wasn't hacked.]
Ok, everyone catch their breath for a moment …
WHAT?
Remember how the Browns walked away, and then the Eagles spent forever wining and dining Kelly before he decided to return to Oregon? And then Kelly decided to stay in Oregon?
That was a week ago.
Now, he’s headed to Philly. What a coup by the Eagles.
[UPDATE: Here's the Eagles' announcement of the hire.]

This should be entertaining.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:05 PM
Fuck. I hate the Eagles, and like watching Chip Kelly’s offenses. This blows.
Also, fuck the Eagles.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:05 PM
Poor, poor Nick Foles.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:05 PM
Thought Phil Knight was paying him to stay at Oregon
January 16th, 2013 at 12:06 PM
Nick Saban thinks this is a dick move.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:06 PM
jesus tittyfucking christ…i cannot wait to see what his offense looks like. thank god i dont have to get emotionally wrapped up in it being my team.
i think his offense works big time at the NFL level. im excited as shit!!!
January 16th, 2013 at 12:08 PM
Really?
January 16th, 2013 at 12:08 PM
Also, does this mean the NCAA is about to bring the heat on Oregon?
January 16th, 2013 at 12:09 PM
Spencer loving the spread is still a bit surreal to me. I know I’ve commented on it before, but it boggles the mind the reversal you made on it after Urban was hired.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:09 PM
The Patriots are already using his tempo. Why wouldn’t it ? It’s the future.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:09 PM
yep…they’re concepts that have been proven to work, they make simple adjustments at the line, and no coach, college or pro, adjusts the pace of the offense better than chip. defenses can plan all they want, kelly’ll just switch out and never let the defense get set for entire drives at a time.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:10 PM
I feel like his offense is going to be a “project” in the near term.
Also, I want to know what his role will be in selecting personnel before I get too annoyed/excited about this selection.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:10 PM
Either this, or Phil Knight lost a bidding war…which is hard to believe.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:10 PM
Fuck yes. That man will either make it work or die trying. I can’t wait for the first time he runs up the score on some unprepared defense.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:11 PM
That’s why I thought it was insane he didnt jump a few weeks ago
January 16th, 2013 at 12:11 PM
i needed to learn more about it. i still hate the spread mack brown ran at texas, love how rich rod’s works just dont like it, the blocking schemes are typically boring and it’s absolutely dreadful to watch bad players try to run it.
the concepts aren’t crazy tho…they’re very simple. it’s how they’re used that’s exciting.
i like to stay open-minded anyways.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:11 PM
Maybe so. I just think NFL defenses will figure out the tempo and the read option elements eventually.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:11 PM
So both Oregon and the Eagles will suck for the next 5 years until they recover from a bad exit/hire.

Oregon should be fine, seeing as they already have his replacement on staff.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:13 PM
He’s quite possibly the most humorless person ever, so he’ll probably make a great NFL coach
January 16th, 2013 at 12:13 PM
With a good QB (Eagles don’t have one) his offense works. This whole scheme won’t work unless he gets that QB.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:14 PM
This is important to keep in mind. We shouldn’t really judge his offense until he has the right players running it.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:14 PM
Oh my God if this leads to the Eagles keeping Vick my hubby is gonna be soooooooooooo pissed
January 16th, 2013 at 12:14 PM
Learning about the intricacies of the Rodriguez offense through MGoBlog was a ton of fun. Seeing how it can turn undersized OGs into monsters was great. One of my favorite plays from his tenure was during an ND game when our RG(Patrick Omameh) made Manti Te’o his bitch about 15 yards downfield.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:14 PM
Wow. No shots at Cleveland. I’m surprised
January 16th, 2013 at 12:14 PM
Bears and Packers didn’t exactly figure out how to read the pistol this year.
I’m not sure Kelly’s offense will work, but I’m sure that now is definitely the time to be trying out new offenses given the recent successes of new systems in the league.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:14 PM
This is going to be key. Yes, the Pats are using elements of his offense, but they also have one of the best to ever play QB running it, and change to a “traditional” offense at times. But most importantly, they have someone in Belichick who has been evaluating NFL players for almost 40 years.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:15 PM
i may be open minded, but im def not open-butthole’d.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:15 PM
I think this hiring means that Vick might be retained another year or two. They’re gonna go heavy on the run with McCoy & Brown.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:15 PM
seriously…especially now that it’s actually warranted.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:16 PM
Welp. I won’t argue with TBL on this one. Wow… wonder if LeSean McCoy won’t be ignored this year.

My 15 year anniversary is this May. My wife has never been to Hawaii and is also interested in a trip to the Florida keys. Plan is to go to one of them in early to mid-June after she gets out of school for the summer (she’s a teacher, not a student).
I’ve been to Oahu, Maui and the big island, Hawaii. I’ve heard good things about Kauai and, of course, Maui seems to be considered the “romantic” island. Based on my budget, and my plan for us to be there roughly 7 days, I figure we’d do 2 islands. We are both the type whose idea of a great vacation is to eat a lot of good food, do some sight seeing, but mostly just lay on a beach and get hammered.
I’d appreciate some opinions on the Keys v. Hawaii; which islands in Hawaii based on the above; and whether Oahu is really all that necessary for a first timer like my wife. I’ve been twice and both times we started on Oahu/Waikiki for 2 or 3 days before moving on to the other island we visited. I was young, so I have no clue about restaurants and night life on any of the islands.
Thanks in advance!
January 16th, 2013 at 12:17 PM
Pretty much.
There is never a “good” time to leave a college hanging for the NFL, but days after new freshman show up for spring class and a few weeks before signing day is about the most dickhead time.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:18 PM
Totally agree with that last part. This could either be really awesome or really, really ugly.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:18 PM
I don’t see him keeping Vick around. Too many younger, cheaper options available to him. Every dual threat QB in college just got really excited about their NFL chances now though.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:18 PM
even moreso after saying he’s staying at oregon. oof.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:18 PM
Going from one undeservingly cocky fan base to another.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:19 PM
Seemed like Oregon had a contigency plan in place with the OC taking over. With what they got returning (Marriota’s a stud) and the continuity in the staff. They’ll probably be fine.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:19 PM

January 16th, 2013 at 12:20 PM
They draw the NFC East next year too. Get to work, Dom.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:20 PM

January 16th, 2013 at 12:20 PM
So Vick or Foles in this offense?
January 16th, 2013 at 12:20 PM
Do not do this. Go to one island. From the way you describe your perfect vacation, you need to go to Kaui or Kona (the big island) on this trip.

Who would you suggest? Not a lot of good dual threat QBs in the draft this year or FAs.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:22 PM
I cannot visit Chris Mortensen’s Twitter page and not laugh. He needs the “Trolololo” song to autoplay on page load.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:22 PM
To be fair everything with him has been “reports”, not like he Saban’d it and called a press conference saying he wasn’t going to leave
January 16th, 2013 at 12:22 PM
Pimpbot5000…i fucking loved maui. went to molokai too, which is great if youre into there being very, VERY little civilization around. think there are 3 restaurants total on the island and not enough people/cars for traffic lights. it’s great driving from one end of the island to the other…goes from strangely out of place mountainy landscapes to rainforest. pretty cool.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:22 PM
This?
January 16th, 2013 at 12:22 PM
So I wonder what changed? Did the Eagles add a zero to their offer sheet, or did Chip get word of another scandal that might break soon?
January 16th, 2013 at 12:23 PM
that’s fair.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:23 PM
Pep Guardiola to Bayern.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:23 PM
Vick is still controlled. He’s not been cut yet.
And Roseman has personnel control…not sure if that’s good or bad yet, but the last draft was pretty good.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:24 PM
wait…doesnt this actually validate the reports that the browns legitimately did move on from kelly?
January 16th, 2013 at 12:24 PM
What!? AWESOME. SUCK IT OREGON!
January 16th, 2013 at 12:24 PM
Dont they have to do it within like a week of the Super Bowl?
January 16th, 2013 at 12:24 PM
The overreaction by the NFL to the read option is interesting to me. Three very unique situations (if you count Russ Wilson). Carolina is an example of what happens when all the right pieces aren’t in place

Philly is going to chew him up and spit him out.
You can go for 2 in the first quarter, and fake punt, and run all the gimmick shit in Oregon and no one cares if you lose. You pull that crap in Philly they’ll light your house on fire when you lose.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:25 PM

I would be calling the Raiders right the fuck now. See if Masoli is healthy up in Canada. Basically just kill time until the next couple of drafts.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:27 PM
I’m so thrilled about this. Sucks for the Browns though. Hopefully Chuddy works out.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:27 PM
God I hate Easterbrook. What a douche.
I’m curious to see whether Andy is gonna draft him in KC or go for someone else.
Also, I’m curious to see if the Eagles are gonna move to a 3-4 or stay in the 4-3.

For my honeymoon we started out on Waikiki. Blah. Only good thing really was visiting Pearl Harbor. When we got to Maui it was like now it really felt like we were in paradise. Also, I have been to Key West several times and I love it, but it in no way can compare to Maui.

January 16th, 2013 at 12:29 PM
Look at Carolina’s schedule and find one really impressive offensive game, Butters. Hint: there aren’t any
January 16th, 2013 at 12:29 PM
On the Hawai’i topic. Maui is a fucking desert by comparison to Kaui. Summer is really bad because of the sugar cane fields being burned off. Dust everywhere, which means you can’t leave your windows open.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:29 PM
Great read on the Pats no-huddle offense and the Chip Kelly influence.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:30 PM
Nick Foles to the Bills!
January 16th, 2013 at 12:31 PM
Just got back from Maui (8 day trip) and agree with this 100%. There was enough to do to combine sight-seeing with relaxing on the beach and not feel overwhelmed or like there was a lack of stuff to do. There are actually more restaurants though. Mama’s Fish House is a must go (although $$$$$), and there are also some nice restaurants in Lahaina and Whaler’s Village.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:31 PM
I feel like having Chip Kelly as their new coach is the appropriate punishment for the Eagles offensive line play this year. Enjoy running after every play you fat lazy oafs.
DeSean Jackson and Maclin are great receivers for this system with exceptional speed and yards after catch. I think this can work for at least one year.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:33 PM
Oh boy, and have this lead to a semantics discussion over what “impressive” means because if I find a good offensive performance you’ll come back with how the defense was bad or something else that helps conform to your point? No thanks
January 16th, 2013 at 12:33 PM

January 16th, 2013 at 12:36 PM
Great read on the Pats no-huddle offense and the Chip Kelly influence.
This is exactly what I was thinking when I heard about this Kelly signing. If done right, it is a tough offense to stop. On the other hand though, having Tom Brady as the guy running the offense might have a major benefit.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:37 PM

January 16th, 2013 at 12:37 PM
Vick better pack his bags. Kelly wants an ACCURATE QB not a turnover machine
January 16th, 2013 at 12:38 PM
DVOA had them 12th in passing, 8th in rushing, and 10th overall. If that’s an example how bad it can be when the pieces aren’t in place….I’m not sure what your point is.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:38 PM
I’ve only been to Maui, but it was awesome. Mamma’s Fish House and Merriman’s are musts. I only wish I had played Kapalua for golf instead of Kannapali.

Everyone’s idea of the perfect vacation spot differs, so I am not going there. Give me an all-inclusive kid free resort, temps in the 80′s, and I am golden. I don’t even want to go see your shitty little town.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:40 PM
Unless you stay on the North side of Maui, there is no comparison in the amount of green between the two islands. Kaui is less developed so it less touristy too. I absolutely prefer that.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:40 PM
Also Butters, Newton led the team in rushing. The three backs they paid dearly for, Stewart, Tolbert, Williams averaged 3.6, 3.4, 4.3 ypc

hey, napoli deal isn’t offically done. I’m spearheading the Bring Michael Morse to Boston campaign!
January 16th, 2013 at 12:44 PM
Really? Wasting that much cap for that little production merits a “So?”
My point is, Carolina didn’t have a top oline like SEA or SF, or the awesome scheme of ‘Skins and unique talents of RG3. It resulted in mediocrity.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:44 PM
Did Rob Ryan get hired by the Rams?
January 16th, 2013 at 12:44 PM
Obviously, the point is that yardage isn’t the best way to measure an offense. It is YPC by running backs combined with 30+ point games (including only your first 10 games).
January 16th, 2013 at 12:45 PM
Going to struggle the first couple years in the pros.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:45 PM

January 16th, 2013 at 12:46 PM
Eagles are a hot mess right now. They have great skill position players on O, but line and QB are bad. Two things key to having a good Kelly Offense.

Pimpbot: My wife and I honeymooned in Hawaii a few years ago. Spent 1.5 weeks on three different islands – Oahu, Maui, and Kauai. Did the same as you mentioned – started at Waikiki Beach, then moved on to Maui then Kauai. I would recommend skipping Oahu unless either of you are history buffs and want to see Pearl Harbor. A day trip to the north shore and Pearl Harbor are the only things I liked about Oahu. Based on what you’re looking for Maui is probably the best fit. Kauai is very nice, but is the least developed and is better for outdoor enthusiasts. Maui has a good mix of attractions and beaches without feeling too crowded, like Waikiki. I’ve heard the big island is nice, but I’ve never been there myself.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:47 PM
I still think Nick Foles can be a good pro QB but you’ll never know in philly with that offensive line
January 16th, 2013 at 12:47 PM
PPG is skewed by the insane pace they play. Defense was actually really good last year. DFEI ranked them 8th.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:48 PM
Lovie or Ryan would be good choices, so I’m hoping they go a different direction. Wonder if Foles will be dealt for some picks?
January 16th, 2013 at 12:49 PM
This has to be a joke. Their D sucked.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:49 PM
Foles for Fitztragic and picks! Come on Buffalo!
January 16th, 2013 at 12:49 PM
That context was included to indicate they were mediocre for most of the season. Then they had some better games toward the end against Phi, Atl, NO, SD, which I said
January 16th, 2013 at 12:50 PM
So … Stoops to Oregon?
January 16th, 2013 at 12:50 PM
Thanks for the insight. I was leaning Kauai in part because I’ve never been there and it looks amazing. But Maui is also very appealing. Not sure if I really want us to have to island hop while we’re there, though (plus I imagine that extra flight greatly increases the cost).
January 16th, 2013 at 12:51 PM
Also driving past Elvis’s house on the north side of the island.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:51 PM
Also ranked 30th in yards per play.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:52 PM
I was watching the last 2 minutes of the Rams/Pats Super Bowl from 2001, and I totally completely forgot Lovie Smith was the Rams DC for that game. That D was uh, soft to say the least
January 16th, 2013 at 12:52 PM
QB is a question, but their O-line was injured with 3 starters out for a majority of the season and their best lineman (Jason Peters) didn’t take a single snap this year. They lack depth on the O-line, sure, but I doubt many teams could withstand losing 3 starters on the O-line.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:52 PM
I think losing Napoli will hurt the Rangers worse than losing Hamilton or Young in the long run.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:52 PM
The fact that they have little talent and managed to produce like they did is an endorsement of that offensive style, not a deterrent
January 16th, 2013 at 12:53 PM
Glazer claims Smith will only return as HC
January 16th, 2013 at 12:54 PM
Mmmmmm, Chipwich.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:54 PM
Just realized you were probably talking about the Oregon D, which does not have any relevance here.
Very interested to see if he can win w/o having the best team/player in Europe. (Not meant to be a shot at Bayern).
January 16th, 2013 at 12:54 PM
Very true. I could see them drafting OL in the draft that would fit Kelly’s system.
As for Lovie – still think the schemes would work best with the personnel in hand. The problem is that the Eagles need to draft lots of secondary in the upcoming draft.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:54 PM
Yes, but three exclamation points? That’s a bunch of crap.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:55 PM
It’s an endorsement of Cam. The Panthers coaching and front office is horrendous.

January 16th, 2013 at 12:57 PM
I was in Kauai this past August and the Keys this past October. Both are awesome, but obviously different. Nightlife and restaurants are much better in the Keys (specifically Key West). Kauai is much better for beaches and actually going in the ocean. And golf is also better in Kauia (if you care). For me, the determining factor is time spent there. If you want to spend 7 days somewhere, I would probably go with Kauai. I loved Key West and will be going back this year. But, I don’t feel the need to be there for 7 days. 4 is perfect. However, it’s pretty easy to spend 7 days in Kauai. Very relaxing. I’ve been to Kauai 4-5 times and have never been disappointed.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:58 PM
You are correct…thought you were hammering Chip for Oregon’s defense. Philly’s defense was terrible.

I can never remember the Eagles having a crop of safeties this bad.
I mean, when you start hoping Colt Anderson gets more run at safety (and he wasn’t bad, but he’s no starter), you know you are hurting at safety.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:58 PM
Also let’s say he gets fired in three years, he just waltzes in to USC’s head coaching gig no matter what at that point right?
January 16th, 2013 at 12:59 PM
Pep Guardiola to Bayern.
Interesting….
January 16th, 2013 at 12:59 PM
Wouldn’t it be cool if Ed Oregeron took over at Oregon? Want to hear some announcers mangling that pronuniciation garble.

Their style still suits him and his talents well…all this was about was my finding it silly to use them as a rationale for why teams wouldn’t want to change their offensive scheme when they were fairly good all things considered, you don’t see the Cardinals used as proof that traditional sets don’t work
January 16th, 2013 at 1:00 PM
Forgot that middle part, dammit.

So damn excited. Hopefully we can finally win the Champions League.

a friend of mine here is the same way. it will be her second and she cannot wait for the end of the month to arrive
January 16th, 2013 at 1:02 PM
The Cardinals also have the worst ol and qb in the league. I think the effectiveness of the system is being overrated because the offenses using it have really good personnel. Whether that be Seattle and SFs line/backs or RG3
January 16th, 2013 at 1:02 PM
Kurt Coleman is the man.

January 16th, 2013 at 1:04 PM
I’ve seen mock drafts recently with the Eagles going for CB or S in the first instead of Joeckel. However if they go to the 3-4, I expect Jarvis Jones to be the pick.
January 16th, 2013 at 1:06 PM
I would kill for Buffalo to somehow get him
January 16th, 2013 at 1:07 PM

January 16th, 2013 at 1:08 PM
Yeah, kinda. I’ve sent her vibes to come the weekend in between the Championship games and the Super bowl, that’d be perfect. Would love to be able to drink a beer during the Super bowl.

Flash forward to two years from now when Bayern’s season is derailed by Pep refusing to spend money on a central defender and injuries meaning Martinez and Schweinsteiger are starting in central defense the entire year.

Damn it I said ‘kinda’, Tim Ryan! Fuck off!
January 16th, 2013 at 1:11 PM
*laughter*
January 16th, 2013 at 1:12 PM
I really would rather not miss the Super bowl either way. Last time I missed any of the Superbowl was when some drunk jackass crashed into a telephone poll near my boyfriend’s dad’s house in college right before the kickoff. Luckily it was just the crappy Bucs/Raiders SB. Watched the 2nd half with 10 people crammed into a dorm room.
January 16th, 2013 at 1:12 PM

Is that right, Mr. Doctor? I can have a drink immediately after nursing. Pumping and dumping is also an option. I have those little alcohol test strips also. I AM PREPARED.

My wife’s rule of thumb was 3 drinks or more, dump anything for the next 8 hours (assuming you pump) and test the batch after that. You’ll pump enough that you can go on week long benders if you want, if your kid likes the taste of frozen milk.

Chip Kelly did a lot of damage to his integrity here, IMO. If you’re going to take the job, just take it. Not a problem at all. Don’t lie to Oregon, though. Shitty deal.
January 16th, 2013 at 1:37 PM

January 16th, 2013 at 1:49 PM
You guys are funny. So when you are looking for a new job, do you just stop doing your current one? No. You continue to work until you turn in your resignation. What if he was in talks with Philly and things didn’t work out? Recruiting in NCAA is a year round gig.
January 16th, 2013 at 1:49 PM
It’s called a negotiation. Somehow I doubt you have Chip Kelly’s leverage
January 16th, 2013 at 1:50 PM

January 16th, 2013 at 1:51 PM
There’s no way to leave a college job that will leave the sports talk caller crowd completely happy…either you abandon your team before the bowl game or you get hired after the pro season ends for clubs which means you’ve had to have begun preparation for the next college season just in case
Just find it silly to blast a guy’s “integrity” when options aren’t plentiful…bet if Nick Saban wanted another NFL gig someone would listen and he actually did say he was staying somewhere before bolting

January 16th, 2013 at 2:00 PM
What about this: Coach leaves, all players are automatically released from their commitments and free to transfer without penalty.
January 16th, 2013 at 2:01 PM

January 16th, 2013 at 2:02 PM

no, he couldve appeased me by telling this kid not to tweet that so i wouldnt have known about it. would that have been so hard?
January 16th, 2013 at 2:05 PM
100 percent for this.
You stop recruiting and don’t conduct Oregon business until you’ve made a commitment to stay (or leave). What he did was selfish — he pretended to ignore the NFL and work for Oregon so he could get a higher offer (in your scenario). That’s a dick move.
January 16th, 2013 at 2:05 PM
That does not sound like the fucking lunatics who kicked the British empire out. For shame.
January 16th, 2013 at 2:07 PM
Correct. But if what trojans said is true, it was about more money, not being offered the position. Lying to kids really worth a couple hundred K?
January 16th, 2013 at 2:08 PM
It really isn’t a dick move. It’s called being an adult and conducting business.
Queefer’s idealism:
Chip to Eagles: “Hey, here’s exactly what I want. I trust you’ll be fair now that I’ve shown my hand”
January 16th, 2013 at 2:09 PM
It was more likely about control than money. No inside knowledge, but that’s usually the crux
January 16th, 2013 at 2:11 PM
Made his move earlier. I doubt that he just woke up this morning and decided he wanted to coach in the NFL. Then, you have things such as the recruiting schedule, spring practice, etc. to consider.
January 16th, 2013 at 2:12 PM
Hmmm….
January 16th, 2013 at 2:12 PM
And if he was posturing for a better deal?
January 16th, 2013 at 2:14 PM
Didnt even have to click that link to know the subject matter.
The Eagles wanted him. You’re telling me they just called him yesterday out of the blue and he decided to listen? This has most likely been going on for weeks.
I don’t fault him for exploring NFL jobs. I have a problem with him lying to kids, co-workers and administrators when he had no real intention of returning to Oregon.
January 16th, 2013 at 2:17 PM
Again, I think they offered him a deal he didn’t want. He held out for more, and eventually got offered enough to jump. I don’t believe he had no intention of staying. I believe he was staying until he got the right offer. Telling people he’s staying is the best move in the interim to keep things operating smoothly
January 16th, 2013 at 2:18 PM

January 16th, 2013 at 2:23 PM
/interrupts post with breaking news about school shooting
OK, we’ll go with that. How long ago did they offer the deal, though?
January 16th, 2013 at 2:30 PM
He’s Chip Kelly, a highly sought after coach from a number of teams in the NFL. There was no need for him to posture for anything. The most shady part of the deal is him hitting the recruiting trail. You have an assistant coach who is in charge of recruiting. The assistant lets you know how you can fit in the head coach’s program. When a head coach shows up in your living room, it’s to close the show. So, for this guy to go from living room to living room selling kids on why they would look good playing for him in his program when he knows he’s leaving is shady. I don’t need any lessons on leverage, and I know there is a faction of this college sports culture who happen to be coach groupies, but he left them hanging. I doubt that he just woke up today and decided he wanted to go to the NFL.
January 16th, 2013 at 2:33 PM
he acted in his best interest? what a monster.
January 16th, 2013 at 2:35 PM
That does not sound like the fucking lunatics who kicked the British empire out.
and then penned a wack-ass constitution that is a burr in our saddles
January 16th, 2013 at 2:36 PM
Staying at Oregon for millions a year was serfdom, right?
I don’t think he’s an asshole. I think he made an asshole decision.
January 16th, 2013 at 2:36 PM
I don’t find anything wrong with Kelly being in that recruit’s living room. He’s still an employee of the University of Oregon, and he’s selling his school. If he DOES end up taking the job, the recruit is not bound by his commitment. I don’t even find it shady at all.
January 16th, 2013 at 2:39 PM
Sounds like you do need lessons on leverage
January 16th, 2013 at 2:39 PM
Exactly. All of this. Interviewing with teams after expressing a desire to move to the NFL is more than fine. Pretending you’re going to coach at Oregon then immediately jumping to the NFL is a bit underhanded.
January 16th, 2013 at 2:49 PM
coaches for a program with almost unlimited booster cash flow, has been credited by the coach who many consider to be one of the very best in NFL history as a major influence on the offensive system his team is currently running, sought after by every team seeking a head coach, could make nice money as a consultant just as a fall back position. In other words, he doesn’t need the money, and he has the credentials. When they need you more than you need them, that’s all of the leverage you need.
January 16th, 2013 at 2:51 PM
Yes, and that leverage can be increased by holding out for a better deal, which is what I believe happened
