2013 NFL Draft: Is There a Colin Kaepernick or Russell Wilson to Be Found?
The tectonic plates of the NFL seem to be shifting, and when they’re done moving, all anyone will be talking about is the read option. We wrote about it in 2011 when Tim Tebow and Cam Newton ushered it in with the Broncos and Panthers, respectively. Russell Wilson of the Seahawks and Colin Kaepernick of the 49ers took the read option to a level in the NFL this year few could have expected in the preseason. (It’s criminal they’re not squaring off in the NFC title game, but perhaps next year.) Robert Griffin III in Washington ran the Pistol to perfection, amazingly getting the last place Redskins to the playoffs. Of the running QBs this year, RGIII was the only one to get hurt (concussion, knee, re-injure knee).
Wilson, a 3rd round steal out of Wisconsin (via NC State), rushed for 489 yards this season and led Seattle within :08 of the NFC Title game; Kaepernick rushed for an astonishing 181 yards Saturday night in helping the 49ers run away from the Packers. (See every Kaepernick run against Green Bay here.)
The NFL is speeding up, whether it is an up-tempo offense (see New England, New Orleans, Green Bay, Denver) or a mobile QB. Does this mean everyone has to go out and get a running QB in 2013, whether it’s free agency (Mike Vick, who turns 33 this summer and is coming off a season in which he missed six gamess due to a concussion), or the draft? At least a dozen teams in the NFL could be in the market for a QB, so who might they be targeting in the middle rounds in April?
Here’s a quick look at the QBs with running skills in the 2013 draft, with two stats to keep in mind: Kaepernick ran a 4.53 40 at the NFL combine; Wilson ran a 4.55 in 2012. (For the sake of argument, we’ll leave Jake Locker out of this. Jury’s still out on the Titans QB, who did run a 4.59 40 at the combine.)
Geno Smith, West Virginia – He’s very mobile, but not nearly in the way Wilson/Kaepernick are. He has said he doesn’t want to be a running QB, even though he’s shown some flashes. It’ll be interesting to see how he runs at the Combine. I’ll be stunned if he isn’t taken in the 1st or 2nd round.
EJ Manuel, Florida State – The guy who could soar up draft boards in the coming weeks. (Highest he’s been in any of our mock drafts? 18th.) Manuel has Big Ben size (6-5, 240), and what appears to be Russell Wilson speed (but not on the level of Wilson in reading defenses.) The problem? This year, he came up small in big spots. He was horrendous passing against Florida. Similarly disappointing against NC State. In 2011 he was knocked out of Oklahoma game (loss).
Collin Klein, Kansas State – Intriguing prospect (6-5, 225). When it comes to running, he’s more Cam than Kaepernick. He’ll slay the interviews. The problem is he really doesn’t have an NFL arm. I don’t see how you can’t give him a look, even if it’s in the 5th-6th-7th round.
Denard Robinson, Michigan – He’s going to play (probably) slot receiver at the next level, mostly because he was such a bad throwing QB at Michigan. Think he’s a fascinating draft pick because of the speed, game-breaking ability and the fact that he can play many places: spot QB for read option, maybe some RB (only 6-1, 195 though), and he could even return kicks.
No candidates to go crazy about, but at least Johnny Manziel is eligible for the draft in 2014.

Hold onto your butts, Miami fans.
LOLz.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:35 PM
I’m so scared that the Lions might pick Denard. Oh and all these QB’s suck. Geno Smith may be good in a couple years.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:36 PM
Said it before, say it again – defenses will catch up. QBs will start getting hit on every zone read. Some of the concepts will stay ala the run-and-shoot, but you’re not going to see the 49ers or Redskins run that offense successfully every down.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:36 PM
Yeah…criminal that they lost to a better team.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:37 PM
I know the Tebow draft pick and everything else after was a complete disaster, but if you don’t think someone won’t take a flier on him in a later round you are crazy.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:37 PM
Matt Scott should’ve been mentioned
January 14th, 2013 at 2:37 PM
I’m not sure this is ever going to happen. Will they get hit more? Definitely. Will it be every time? Highly doubt it.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:38 PM
He basically said as much. ” I don’t see how you can’t give him a look, even if it’s in the 5th-6th-7th round.”
January 14th, 2013 at 2:39 PM
They’ll for sure start going right for knees every chance they get.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:39 PM
Prepare to be stunned, Geno Smith is a 3rd round pick at the earliest.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:40 PM
How fast is Klein? If he can catch, he may be a pretty good project TE.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:40 PM
Considering Klein can’t throw the ball more than 30 yards down the field, yes, I do understand how you can’t give him a look. He is a homeless man’s Tebow and we’ve seen how that turns out.
Geno Smith is in no way prepared to run read option. He’s too slow to be able to turn the corner. Why he’s even on this list is mind boggling. This is like saying Byron Leftwich can run the read option because he ran for a TD once.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:40 PM
I wouldn’t draft Colin Klein if it went 15 rounds, can’t shake that pass before halftime from my mind…there’s weak-armed by NFL standards (think Chad Pennington) and then there’s that
January 14th, 2013 at 2:40 PM
And Chris Ault, the Nevada-Reno Coach, who developed the pistol offense, has left the school but has emphasized that he is not retiring. He’s 66, and seem to have great energy. Rumors are that he will join a pro team in some capacity. Greg
Roman, the 49er offensive coach, spent a bunch of time with him here in Reno last summer, learning the offense. Definitely the future.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:41 PM
They don’t do that now with passing QBs. Why will they do it with running QBs? Especially if they’re in the pocket? Also, the zone read play happens too fast for someone to get to the QB immediately. I think the zone-read is here to stay provided it’s not the base offense and the team has an OL like SF. Frankly, if you can move the DL back two out of every three plays, you can run pretty much whatever offense you want to.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:41 PM
So Tedd Ginn but not as good of an athlete.
Holy shit you guys, you realize Cam Cameron is interviewing with the Jets for their OC job, could mean Denard ends up with them.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:42 PM
I condensed a bit, but generally, defenses will start forcing the give where the playside line has to block. For whatever reasons, pro DEs weren’t disciplined in their assignments – they’d run down the line trying to tackle the RB rather (a) keeping shoulders square (basically forcing the give) OR (B) rush the mesh point and kill the QB.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:42 PM
I mean, if you’re scraping the bottom mentioning Denard Robinson as an example…you may as well put Logan Thomas out there (if he declares today). Of the QBs out there, he’s the only one who has the size, speed and arm strength if you’re looking for a NFL hybrid QB. He ran the read-option well with David Wilson in 2011…and ran the pistol (albeit poorly) in 2012.
For him, it’s just a question of whether or not he can be coached up.
This is why he’s still a 2nd round pick at least- despite all the criticism. He has the most upside.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:42 PM
Racial stereotyping. It’s like media always finding a white NBA player to compare a white prospect to
January 14th, 2013 at 2:42 PM
WAS #1 in yards per pass attempt (8.3)
SF #2 (8.1)
WAS #2 in yards per rush attempt (5.2)
SF #3 (5.1)
January 14th, 2013 at 2:44 PM
Seattle and SF have excellent OLs (SF is dominant, Seattle really good) and Griffin is an exceedingly rare talent. The read option works only in limited situations
January 14th, 2013 at 2:45 PM
If those stats hold after next year (or are close to their numbers) I’ll totally buy in. I want to see the NFL DCs get a year to look at the offenses and scheme to them before I’ll buy in completely that this is what the future holds.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:45 PM
Not much on context, are we?
January 14th, 2013 at 2:48 PM
oops, sorry, misread that. I could see him turning into the h-back or TE type guy pretty easily. he seems pretty bright and is sized right.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:48 PM
Can’t do much better than both of those teams did on offense this year.
Also, LOL at ARZ being rated #32 in BOTH of those categories. God they were terrible.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:48 PM
From MMQ (first time I’ve read it in prob 4 months) The quarter-by-quarter scoring line at Denver:
Pretty outstanding game.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:48 PM
No. That was easy.
I mean there might be one that I didnt get to see play, but not any of the absolute busts you listed.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:50 PM
They should of had him in there to sneak.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:50 PM
Kaepernick has a fucking cannon. Those GB DB’s weren’t exactly chasing him down with ease – he’s got wheels too – covers lots of ground in a hurry.
There are going to be a lot of coaches fired trying to develop the next Kapernick with guys with inferior skill sets.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:50 PM
had to fill the daily Michigan slurp quota, it’s in the handbook, pretty much SOP round these parts.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:50 PM
This. He couldn’t throw the ball into the end zone from the 50. I mean. Come on.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:51 PM
Cody Fajardo(?) or Braxton Miller down the line. Nothing works this year unless you want to draft Taylor “Throwing Motion” Martinez.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:51 PM
Again, these QBs can throw.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:51 PM
Interesting. I wonder how the before/after numbers look for SF wrt the QB change.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:52 PM
Context of that was going forward, not this year. And out of the 3 teams running the zone read or a variation exclusively, one has already lost its QB.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:53 PM
Terrelle Pryor, 2013 NFL MVP
January 14th, 2013 at 2:53 PM
What about Florence from Baylor?
January 14th, 2013 at 2:54 PM
I really like Matt Scott especially if teams are going to this quick passing/no huddle/ read option type of offense, but I feel like he’s one hit way from being permanently brain damaged. Two significant concussions this year. Very risky.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:55 PM
Babar 2.0
I know that was kind of a joke…but, that’s kind of the point, isn’t it? If you could get an OC to tailor an offense for Pryor’s talents like we’re seeing with RGII and CK, there’s a pretty high ceiling for where he could go.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:55 PM
CAR & SEA were the only other 2 teams to average at least 8.0 yards per pass attempt. Noticing a theme?
January 14th, 2013 at 2:56 PM
You seem to have confused the definition of ceiling and floor.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:56 PM
I really think it’s going to be interesting to see how guys like Mariota and Manziel will be evaluated now.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:57 PM
Atlanta is not better than Seattle. Come on, man.
Geno Smith as a first round pick made me laugh more than your post though, Husker.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:57 PM
January 14th, 2013 at 2:58 PM
I think there are some very valid points to the mobile-QB / zone read system. I like having it as a piece of a playbook, especially for audibles, etc.
However, I long maintain that give these workaholic def. coordinators a summer to break this shit down, there’s gonna be some bodies on the floor.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:59 PM
They were yesterday and that’s all that matters to me. They were last year in SEA, too. But it’s cool. I’m sure their DVOA and SRS were through the roof, so you have that on your side.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:59 PM
Cameron calling plays for Sanchez.
Cameron calling plays for Sanchez.
Cameron calling plays for Sanchez.
This is too good to be true.
January 14th, 2013 at 2:59 PM
Is he really a worse prospect than Brandon Weeden?
January 14th, 2013 at 3:00 PM
I look forward to Darrell coming in to bemoan this “gimmick.”
January 14th, 2013 at 3:00 PM
Smith will be a first round pick because some idiot GM will give in to the idiot fans who think a QB has to be taken in the first round to be good despite all of the evidence.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:00 PM
Seconded. It’s worth a 15-yard penalty to lay a wicked hit on a mobile QB. Atlanta better consider that strategy Sunday.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:01 PM
Smith to the Browns!

January 14th, 2013 at 3:01 PM
That’s why I want to see what SF and Washington (we may have to wait two years for the latter) for another year. I want to see the NFL DCs correct their mistakes before we completely cement this into the NFL life. I do think the zone-read is here to stay, though.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:01 PM
Yeah, how dare we look at actual performance to judge the quality of a team. Give me a break, Husker. Seattle is clearly superior to Atlanta.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:02 PM
Laughable when people compare zone-read to the Wildcat gimmick.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:02 PM
This.
Those QB’s from Syracuse and Miami of Ohio will be 2nd or 3rd round picks.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:02 PM
Has a married rookie quarterback ever been successful?
/David Carr sucked
//He can’t go out boozing and getting other players laid
///You just can’t trust married people or their judgement
////Clearly irrational to be married at that age
January 14th, 2013 at 3:03 PM
I always felt like Tom Brady was reported to have a fairly soft arm, until he threw 1,000 passes a day or whatever all summer. Why couldn’t Klein improve his arm to ‘mediocre’ at least?
January 14th, 2013 at 3:03 PM
I can’t wait until D-Coordinators have an entire summer to break down and stop Brady and the Patriot’s offense.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:03 PM
All of this.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:03 PM
Probably, yeah. He couldn’t succeed against Big 12 competition. Yes, his numbers against shit college defenses were great. But he had some stinkers against some bad teams despite a great supporting offensive cast.
Weeden also benefited from some crap defenses and Justin Blackmon. His size and arm matter, though.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:04 PM
That touchdown pass he zipped was ridiculous. Its a shame he is a douchebag.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:06 PM
I lolled.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:06 PM
Anytime you can base a opinion on one game decided by two points, you have to, right? Especially when its played at 10 am Pacific Time.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:06 PM
You should have seen him last year. I kid you not. He was much improved this year.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:07 PM
Ran for a TD once on a broken leg, you mean.
/ This is not true
// His linemen carried him downfield
/// And he did not run for the TD
January 14th, 2013 at 3:07 PM
What about Florence from Baylor?
might not be too bad from a value standpoint if you can get him in the 4th round and up. he does not have a super strong arm, but was pretty accurate and could move. ran the read option quite well, too.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:07 PM
This makes me laugh to no end. If it was such a big deal, SEA could have flown in on Friday. Give me a break.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:07 PM
He certainly looks and sounds like a doucher. Is he really an asshat, though? I cant decide.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:08 PM
Dude would have been an all-american safety.
/Mack Brown
January 14th, 2013 at 3:08 PM
This is why I have favored him over Alex Smallhands since the moment he was drafted. You could see it the first time he took the field in the preseason. He can run, he can throw, and the offense perks up when he’s on the field.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:08 PM
Really? He didn’t really have a horrible game all year. His worst was against K-St, 21-32, 143 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT. After that though? Never had a completion percentage under 50%, and never threw more INT’s than TD’s.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:08 PM
It absolutely matters. Stats bear this out. Yes, they could and should have just stayed on the East Coast all week, actually.
But I’m sure its a coincidence Seattle dropped 28 points in the second half.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:09 PM
Cuse and TTU were poor, if I remember correctly.
/may not remember correctly.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:10 PM
SB Nation has him going #1 overall, wtf!
January 14th, 2013 at 3:11 PM
Actually I think it was. ATL threw a bad pick. Only reason this was a game.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:11 PM
There is a long, consistent history in the NFL of teams taking a QB first because they think they have to. I actually think Joeckel will be the top pick, but that’s only because there are some shitty QBs in this draft class.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:12 PM
i dont know how long this zone read thing is going to last in the nfl.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:12 PM
That, and terrible playcalling by Seattle twice inside the red zone.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:13 PM
I can’t wait for Pey Pey to retire so we can get the epic Arm tat bowl between Osweiler and Kapernick
January 14th, 2013 at 3:14 PM
Jesus. Or it was a great defensive play by ATL twice. Damn dude…you must be incredible to watch games with.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:14 PM
Manuel is the only one on this list that looks like he could be a decent NFL QB. Which means he’ll probably be the worst.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:14 PM
I can’t wait until D-Coordinators have an entire summer to break down and stop Brady and the Patriot’s offense.
I lolled.
Ignorant. The Pats install more new shit in their offense each year.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:14 PM
Yes, he wasn’t “horrible.” But he damn sure was not good against TCU, Texas Tech, or Syracuse.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:15 PM
I don’t think there’s a college QB coming out in 2013 who is worthy of a first-round pick. Yet some idiot GM or coach will waste a top pick on Matt Barkley or Landry Jones.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:16 PM
Exactly. Fan pressure, owner pressure, media pressure…it always falls on the side of, “you gotta take a QB…can’t win without a QB…etc…” While it’s true you need a QB, that doesn’t mean you take a shitty one just to fill a position slot.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:17 PM
Sure, sure. halfback run with the backup RB, then run with the FB, both directly up the middle. No Lynch. No Wilson. Brilliant. That’s how it’s been described by everyone else, as brilliant playcalling.
You discount a horrible interception by Shat Ryan, yet claim two shit playcalls were great defensive plays and ignore that Atlanta benefited from a Lynch fumble as well. I know Atlanta fans don;t have much to hang their hats on, but let’s not pretend this was anything but another fraud Falcons win.
All that said — they beat SF this week and I’ll be duly impressed. Game is at 3 so no time excuses for the Niners.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:17 PM
Iverson Answered the question way ahead of his time.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:18 PM
I KNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!
January 14th, 2013 at 3:18 PM
How many teams are even going to look at a QB early?
KC
Jax?
Oak?
Phil?
Cle?
AZ?
Buffalo
NYJ?
Minn?
I could see Oakland taking one at 3 because they’re Oakland, but if Buffalo doesn’t take one at 8, we could see a first-round QB shut-out.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:18 PM
the epic Arm tat bowl between Osweiler and Kapernick
Consensus bust T. Pryor, line one
January 14th, 2013 at 3:18 PM
Again…you being a BAL fan makes these comments the best part of this site.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:19 PM
How did I discount that? I said the only reason SEA was in the game at the end was because of it. Not sure that’s in any way discounting anything.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:19 PM
Cleveland won’t take a QB. Maybe one of the garbage heap but not drafing one IMO.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:20 PM
And you can find one in the later rounds, as evidenced by third-rounder Joe Montana, sixth-rounder Tom Brady, ninth-rounder Johnny Unitas and unknown third-rounder Unibrow Flacco.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:20 PM
We’ll be back on the Queefer and Husker Show right after these messages
/headdesk
January 14th, 2013 at 3:21 PM
Al’s dead man…this no longer applies.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:21 PM
I think out of that list, KC, Jax, Arizona, and Buffalo are the only teams that would reach for any QB and Jax is probably 80-20 no since there’s no can’t miss guy and they have Gabbert.
My prediction is that KC takes Smith or Barkley at the beginning of the second.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:22 PM
Much as I like Kaepernick, I think Alex Smith would be a pretty good pickup for a team in need of a steady QB, provided he has a solid OC to work with and talent around him. Kansas City and Reid seem like a perfect fit.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:23 PM
By saying its the only reason they were in the game. That’s discounting it. Which is funny considering you were getting on commentors in the other thread for saying that special teams TDs were the only reason Denver was in the Baltimore game.
The INT matters. A lot. I could say the only reason Atlanta won was because of fumble luck and poor playcalling. Wouldn’t be right, but its the same as what you tried to do with the Shatty Ice INT (the second one).
January 14th, 2013 at 3:24 PM
Minnesota…
To bad Ponder didn’t flame out in the playoffs…probably bought him another year.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:24 PM
I hate the ‘early game’ argument too since as you said they have all kinds of options to get there on time. They’re not exactly flying coach.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:24 PM
Agreed. Kansas City is going to be a problem for the AFC if they ever get a QB. That team has a lot of talent with no one to deliver the ball.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:25 PM
His ghost will keep the Raiduhs quaffing deeply from the Eternal Cup of Purple Drank.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:25 PM
The wildcat was Rich Rod’s WVU zone read brought to the NFL. What’s being run now is similar, but out of different formations. It also includes a combination of the Ault and Meyer systems that rely more on power running especially in SF. You see a lot of H-back blocks and pulling guards in the zone read run by SF.
Oh, and it stresses the defenses becasue the QB is a threat to pass – something you didn’t really have to worry about with Cadillac and Ricky.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:25 PM
It’s always entertaining when two people who are never wrong go at it.
Do Husker’s wife and Queefer’s wife swap suicide tips?
January 14th, 2013 at 3:25 PM
It has nothing to do with the size of the seats. It’s biological.
Yes, they have options to alleviate the time difference though. And Seattle should have taken advantage. Especially since they were just in Washington.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:25 PM
WHICH IS WHY I SAID IT WAS THE REASON SEA WAS IN THE GAME!!! Without the pick, ATL win the game by 10ish points.
I could say the moon is made of green cheese.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:25 PM
This is pretty fun theater, but I disagree with this assessment. It was second down. If Ryan just throws an incomplete there (which is what would have happened if it got knocked down), Falcons have a 3rd and 11 to convert. Most Likely Seattle is getting the ball back with the roughly the same amount of time at the same spot on the field considering Atlanta’s awful punter. Seattle could have easily been back in the game without that pick. The reason Seattle got back in the game is because of Atlanta’s piss poor defense and inability to stop Russell Wilson, not that one pick
January 14th, 2013 at 3:25 PM
Christian Ponder.
Andy Dalton.
Blaine Gabbert.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:27 PM
With All Day behind Smith to carry the load the way Gore did for him so much in SF, that could work out.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:27 PM
Please. My wife runs the house. I’m not at all afraid to admit that.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:27 PM
it was head-to-head and Husker’s team is the one left standing. end of story.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:28 PM
Agree. I should soften my comment a bit. The pick was a very big part of SEA getting back into the game. The momentum of a pick and where the ball was placed added with Wilson playing great ball hurt Atlanta. However ATL could have also gotten a 3rd and 11 on the next play, too.

But the long and the short of it is ATL won the game and now has a NFL title game in their building for the first time ever. That’s badass.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:30 PM
also, if this was beisbol, all the winners this weekend would have taken champagne baths, no? don’t they do that after every round in baseball?
January 14th, 2013 at 3:30 PM
NFL = NFC
January 14th, 2013 at 3:31 PM
I dont think we can write him off.
Ditto. Surprised I was even allowed to watch football Saturday.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:31 PM
Gabbert ran a 4.61 at the combine. Ponder a 4.65. Maybe they need a pistol element in their offenses. Certainly couldn’t hurt for Gabbert.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:32 PM
Maybe, but it’s still no excuse. It’s certainly not the reason they were down 20 after the first half. You leave points like that in the red zone – especially the one at the end of the half – you’re asking for it.
Seattle also had a bad habit this year of letting teams march down on them at the end of games. It finally caught up to them.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:32 PM
Don’t forget clinching a playoff spot or division title or wild card.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:32 PM
They ran the zone-read a lot in Mizzou, didn’t they?
January 14th, 2013 at 3:33 PM
Sorry haven’t got to it yet. Will do over lunch here (I’m on Pacific time though so my body clock is way off) if there’s still room.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:34 PM
I want the comments opened on the Mike McCarthy post so I can point out how eerily he resembles a younger version of Exxon CEO Lee Raymond.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:35 PM
I really, really hope they win.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:35 PM
Agreed they COULD have gotten it, but it wasn’t very likely they would have considering they had a 3rd and 13 and 3rd and 8 in the 4th they didn’t get. The placement of the ball has no effect because Atlanta punted on the very next series from about the same place on the field and Seattle started from their own 40. Thomas’s interception started them at the their own 39.
Yes, the pick was a part of the comeback, but I don’t believe it was that much of a game turner other than the fact it gave Seattle a little more confidence than a punt would have. Same goes for the Falcons on the 3rd and 4th and 1 stops. A little confidence boost, but necessarily total game changing plays.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:36 PM
Except Josh Hamilton, who would have taken a bath in the blood of an unsuspecting fan.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:37 PM
I was in the stadium. The crowd went to shit immediately afte that pick. I think you’re underselling it’s value a bit. But again, Atlanta won, Seattle lost and that’s all that matters.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:38 PM
Vlad, just rejoined the league
January 14th, 2013 at 3:38 PM
What’s funny is that’s how every ATL fans feels about BAL. I’d pick ATL to win that game, but no way would I pick ATL to beat Brady.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:38 PM
Romo and Reid in 2014.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:38 PM
I don’t think “running the house” has anything to do with it. Having to deal with someone 24-7-365 as narcissistic, self-rightous and dogmatic as the two of you has to be fucking draining. I get tired of it and all I do is read your navel gazing on the internet.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:39 PM
My bad.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:40 PM
I was hoping the Pirates would have done it if they went over .500 this year, but alas.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:41 PM
Ditto. Surprised I was even allowed to watch football Saturday.
Allowed? is “watch football” code for banging whores?
January 14th, 2013 at 3:42 PM
BUT SHE GETS FUCKING LEAP YEARS OFF
January 14th, 2013 at 3:42 PM
If this happened, it would be hilarious watching Jerrah pull his implants out by the roots.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:43 PM
So CuckTheFubs was heading to Miami just to watch some football?
January 14th, 2013 at 3:43 PM
You guys are whipped… I watch football whenever I want! I just WANTED to finish painting the bathroom for my wife instead of watching the Falcons game yesterday.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:44 PM
you want a Pats-Falcons Super Bowl?
January 14th, 2013 at 3:45 PM
My wife hates football season. I’ve cut back big time on watching football now that we have a little one, but in my wife’s perfect world I’d only watch the Georgia game on Saturday’s and that would be that. Though in my perfect world should would be a 5-star chef and we’d be rich beyond imagination. So we all have our disappointments.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:45 PM
Endless story lines of Matt Ryan playing his hometown team wouldn’t at all annoying.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:47 PM
holy hell…we’re the same person. I did this very thing, except on Saturday.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:47 PM
I can’t type for shit.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:49 PM
Pimpbot5000 getting after it out there today.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:50 PM
it’s funny, i saw vid of pretty much every catch blackmon made his last two seasons, and i was thinking to myself “this guy’s this highly rated when every pass hits him right in the hands?” and considering how easy weeden made his job, he dropped A FUCKING TON of balls he should’ve caught.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:51 PM
The best part of my wife hating football is watching my 10-month old raise her arms in the air when I say “touchdown!” to her. She barely waves goodbye to you, but you say touchdown loud enough she’ll raise her arms up. It cracks me up every time.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:55 PM
Cool. Bye.
I only really watch Ravens games on Sundays, and the occasional big college game while doing something else around the house. I miss being able to get together with 10 friends on a Saturday at noon and just go crazy til 2 am.
January 14th, 2013 at 3:57 PM
I tried to teach my daughter the same thing, but there just wasn’t enough repetition this year since we’re Vols and Titans fans.
/sadface
January 14th, 2013 at 3:58 PM
miz, do you teach her to yell at Chris Johnson for being a slacker?
January 14th, 2013 at 3:59 PM
Well played.
January 14th, 2013 at 4:02 PM
She barely waves goodbye to you, but you say touchdown loud enough she’ll raise her arms up. It cracks me up every time.
The amount of awesome in that statement cannot be quantified.
January 14th, 2013 at 4:04 PM
And least someone in that house is enjoying six being pounded in.
January 14th, 2013 at 4:04 PM
no. we don’t acknowledge him in our house.
January 14th, 2013 at 4:05 PM
mole wins the day
January 14th, 2013 at 4:08 PM
Yep, used to sit down with beers for Gameday, then proceed to drink through whoever Hawaii was playing at 2:00 am. Not anymore. OSU had a bunch of 12:00 games this year, whcih meant no excessive drinking and a kid running around. I think my wife would schedule her haircuts for Saturdays just to rub it in.
January 14th, 2013 at 4:09 PM
what’s this family obligation stuff?
/single, no one to bother me about watching sports
//cleans house

January 14th, 2013 at 4:13 PM
Uconn-Louisville tonight. Is it worth going? Don’t know enough about Louisville to know Uconn’s chances.
January 14th, 2013 at 4:13 PM
I was really hoping that Scott Pioli would stay at KC or get hired somewhere. I can see an nice package of Michael Turner and Roddy White in exchange for multiple draft choices.
Get Jadeveon Clowney and a new WR through free agency or the draft.
I love Roddy’s game, but he’s such a sucker for big mouth idiots – he let’s them take him out of his game with talk. Idiot. See previous games against the Saints, Meangelo Hall, others.
January 14th, 2013 at 4:14 PM
sctrojans, if UConn keeps it within 10, that’s a success. Louisville will suffocate them to death.
January 14th, 2013 at 4:15 PM
Great nickname. Is it a coincidence it applies to Meion Sanders?
January 14th, 2013 at 4:15 PM
“I miss being able to get together with 10 friends on a Saturday at noon and just go crazy til 2 am.”
I’m calling bullshit on your ever having “friends,” much less 10 of them. Whether at once or cumulatively.
January 14th, 2013 at 4:15 PM
also, sctrojans, i hate watching louisville play. Pitino insists on playing fullcourt press the entire game. It’s hard to watch
January 14th, 2013 at 4:17 PM
Meion Sanders?
Good call. But Deion was much smoother about it. Guys like Hall and Sherman are just jackasses.
January 14th, 2013 at 4:17 PM
What do you mean by suffocate? Uconn is susceptible on the boards, but can handle the ball and get in the paint against anyone. Scoring inside will be tough I imagine.
January 14th, 2013 at 4:18 PM
Siva will give Napier and Boatright hell. On their own, Syracuse and Louisville can score 70+ points. Last year down in the Ville, they played a game in the 50s because the defenses were just punishing.
January 14th, 2013 at 4:18 PM
The Pitino press, that’s right. I hate it. Was always fun to watch a Calhoun team play against that garbage.
January 14th, 2013 at 4:20 PM
But Deion was much smoother about it
smooth as a sandy handjob. hate deion.
January 14th, 2013 at 4:23 PM
This whole idea of always hitting the QB is a bit silly and unrealistic. This isn’t college. NFL guys are trained to tackle the ball carrier. When they see the QB doesn’t have it, they’ll leave him alone. They don’t always hit the RB on play action, why would they always hit the QB on the inside give? Also, NFL defenses are designed to focus 11 players against 10 – the QB is generally left alone. Keying on the QB and always hitting him plays right into the hands of teams like SanFran and Seattle, who have great running games without the zone read and QBs that can throw. Finally, in the current environment of injury-prevention, I guarantee that if “always hit the QB” becomes the standard, that will be a penalty by 2014.
January 14th, 2013 at 4:48 PM
So this will remain true with a running QB? 11 on 10 is folly against Newton/Kapernick/RGIII/Wilson. You saw the 11 on 10 aspect against these zone read teams this year. My argument is that a NFL d-coordinator will, given time, render much of the zone read moot, like Bill Belicheck did to the wildcat.
January 14th, 2013 at 5:35 PM
Milk Steak, you seem so sure that DC will solve the zone-read, but have not really given a solution besides “hit the QB.” Much more complicated than that, as WAS still utilized aspects of it with Kirk Cousins (though to a lesser extent).
Last night on twitter, @NFLosophy had an interesting discussion on how teams will scheme to stop it next year.
