Murray Chass Thinks BBWAA Voters Should Punish Tim Raines For Cocaine Use
BBWAA members already rendered the institution irrelevant with their “moral stand” on steroids, but it would not be a true baseball media controversy without Murray Chass marauding in to one-up everyone with his sanctimony. Not only does the blogger want to keep “steroid studs” out of the HOF. He wants to keep out people who admitted using recreational drugs, such as Tim Raines.
But if a voter follows the BBWAA rules in regard to steroids, he should realize they also pertain to drugs such as cocaine.
“Voting,” reads rule No. 5, “shall be based upon the player’s record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.”
Voters might not think about it consciously, but when they decide not to vote for a steroids user, they are invoking the “integrity, sportsmanship, character” clause. The same clause applies to Raines.
Some people reject use of that clause, arguing that there are plenty of bad guys in the Hall of Fame and usually cite Ty Cobb as the poster boy for that group. But that’s not an excuse to put more bad guys in.
Tim Raines admitted playing while high. Noted alcoholic Mickey Mantle undoubtedly played at least a few games while drunk. There’s a word for what a HOF would look like were it to eschew any player who battled with personal demons or disparaged “rule No. 5″ in some way during their careers… empty.

There’s also a word for guys who overlook Paul Molitor’s drug use, a contemporary of Raines, but not Raines drug use: Racist.
Chass is an assclown. He can’t be taken seriously.

I don’t have the energy to argue with an old man who is still wishing it were 1955.

So,it’s okay to penalize a player for using an illegal substance. But, it’s not okay to penalize a player for using an illegal substance?
Right. Got it.
If the ‘roids guys aren’t getting in due to sanctimonious baseball writers, then it should extend to cocaine users.

Pretty sure that’s not Tim Raines. It was Lawrence Taylor Baseball Night.

I’ve looked at that Paulina Gretzky thread about 20 times today.

I have no idea what point you’re trying to make.

I also should have noted that I don’t think steroid users should be kept out. Let Raines in. He should be in.

if you keep cheaters out, then please remove Ty Cobb from the HOF. thanks a bunch!

All for that middle profile picture of her, I’m guessing.
That picture was unbelievable.

What’s hilarious is that the aforementioned photo, she looks smoking and that’s probably the most clothes I’ve ever seen her wearing.

the blogger
I see what you did there.
At least he’s consistent. I have so little respect for the intelligence of most baseball writers. Guys like Law and Neyer I rarely disagree with – guys like Chass and Heyman are very lucky they never had to get real jobs.

BBWAA members already rendered the institution irrelevant
I know every single one of these words but I don’t know what this sentence means.

I would like all BBWAA writers who covered baseball over the last 20 years but failed to expose the rampant (and it turns out rather poorly hidden) PED use expelled from the BBWAA.

Raging hypocrisy

The league and players helped create this mess and have opened themselves up to the slippery slope arguments. Obviously the writers have taken their stand. Personally, I don’t think the Hall of Fame should celebrate cheaters, but the issue is clear as mud and it’s impossible to draw a line in the sand.
The argument that Clemens and Bonds were cleared in court is moot unless you believe OJ busy in his jail cell looking for the real killers.

the hall of fame should just take the voting process away from the writers at this point. no one gives a shit about the point you are trying to prove, regardless of what it is.
January 10th, 2013 at 10:43 PM
If the point is that the Baseball Hall of Fame is supposed to be a shrine to the sport and all that it entails, then why not start by kicking out noted racist Ty Cobb?
I mean, if we’re going to whitewash the place of all sinners, let’s go the full Tebow.

This is exactly why sportswriters (that old and out of touch with reality) should not be on the list of people who vote the players into the HOF. In fact, he probably one of those Ass Clowns who enjoyed baseball during the time the players where bulking up and hitting massive home runs and probably wrote very great things about the ballplayers back then and since it come to light that baseball players used steroids he NOW wants to punish them. What gives this idiot that right to play to judge and jury? Get rid of the Bum!!!
