Brian Kelly Interviewing With the Eagles: A Ploy For Notre Dame to Give Him a Charlie Weis Extension?
Just days after saying leaving Notre Dame “isn’t an option” and he had “the best job in the country,” reports have emerged linking Brian Kelly to the Philadelphia Eagles. He purportedly interviewed for the job, despite being out of the country. Time for Notre Dame fans to freak out? Perhaps, though as Keith Arnold points out, it may be significant that Brian Kelly shares an agent with both Schefter and Mortensen.
Maybe Kelly wants to leave Notre Dame for the NFL, though, if he was serious, doing the media equivalent of shouting it with a bullhorn would seem silly. Kelly has earned the reputation as “a climber.” Most coaches, though, would “climb” from Grand Valley State to D-IA with Central Michigan, from Central Michigan to Cincinnati and from Cincinnati to Notre Dame. With the money in college football, would a more fleeting engagement with the Philadelphia Eagles even be a climb?
This stinks of a ploy, one designed to give Notre Dame a little taste of terror and reassert whatever leverage was lost by the title game beat down. If Kelly leaves now, the program instantly returns to full-on panic mode, a place it knows well from the past two decades.
This is a different regime in South Bend, though even a whiff of NFL interest got his predecessor Charlie Weis a 10-year contract and, now, Notre Dame has far more to lose.

Really expected some vitriol given your treatment of O’Brien.
January 10th, 2013 at 11:55 AM
How is this a ploy? Like…a ploy would be to get his agent to float his name and the NFL in connection with one another. The Eagles actually interviewed him, no? Is the owner or GM friends with him? Would they really waste their time just to help him get more cash?
January 10th, 2013 at 11:56 AM
Actually he was never out of the country per the Chicago Tribune.
January 10th, 2013 at 11:57 AM
im kinda hoping this happens just for the hilarity that would ensue when TBL runs like five posts about the possibility of ND stealing urban meyer from OSU.
January 10th, 2013 at 11:57 AM
whoa…lewan AND matthews staying in college? that’ll totally fuck up the top 10.
January 10th, 2013 at 11:57 AM
YES YES YES. It’s the NFL and it’s with an owner who is willing to spend money. PHI is a better job than ND. Unless you’re the coach of NE with Brady or GB with Rodgers, pretty much every HC position has one that is better than it.
January 10th, 2013 at 11:58 AM
I don’t think you understand what plot means?
January 10th, 2013 at 11:58 AM
Matthews was always staying. Joeckel is gone. Texas A&M loses a lot, actually. Keeping Matthews helps for sure, though. I’ll go on record saying Bama wins that game by 10+, though. Any takers?
January 10th, 2013 at 11:58 AM
ploy* DAMNIT
January 10th, 2013 at 11:59 AM
Was really hoping the Eagles could grab Lewan with the #4 pick. Have no idea what they’re gonna do now since Joeckel is more than likely gonna be the #1 pick…unless Fat Andy decides he wants Geno Smith.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:00 PM
i didnt realize he was always staying…fig he’d have thought about leaving since he’s a projected top 10 pick. but lewan? not sure what he has to gain by staying another year.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:00 PM
kelly has gone as far as he can in cfb
January 10th, 2013 at 12:00 PM
I would think that would offer a nice middling opportunity. What do you think the actual spread on that game will be?
January 10th, 2013 at 12:01 PM
luke joeckel is my dude…his quote at SEC media day.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:01 PM
kelly has gone as far as he can in cfb
I would think winning the National Championship is the farthest someone can go in college football.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:02 PM
can’t believe angelo is getting interviewed by anyone. wait, i can believe that the interviewer is the jets
January 10th, 2013 at 12:02 PM
Rich Kotite went 36-28 in his Eagles stint. HIRE THIS MAN
January 10th, 2013 at 12:03 PM
I was stunned he stayed. I don’t think him staying means a ton for MICH next year in terms of being a real contender. That’s what was most surprising.
I would guess Bama -2.5 or -3. I also would bet my child that Saban will begin looking at film on A&M the day after signing day and his team will work on defending Manziel all summer. They also have a bye the week before the game.

January 10th, 2013 at 12:04 PM
yea, i dont think it does either, aside from obviously helping the OL. it’s not like tebow or leinart or someone staying.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:05 PM
They have 2 weeks to prepare for that game as well. No games between their opener against Va Tech, and 9/14.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:05 PM
I suppose him taking the interview would be a ploy if he had no interest in interviewing, but damn that’s a loud way of asking for a raise. I think it would be dumb of any coach (including that BC coach who was fired for doing so) to pass on an NFL interview.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:05 PM
I would think winning the National Championship is the farthest someone can go in college football.

Am I crazy for thinking people aren’t giving Kingsbury enough credit given that he made both Keenum and Manziel? Let’s see how he does without his offensive coordinator next year.

Am I crazy for thinking people aren’t giving Kingsbury enough credit given that he made both Keenum and Manziel? Let’s see how he does without his offensive coordinator next year.
He did pretty well in the Cotton Bowl with Sumlin and another assistant sharing play calling. But I agree that Manziel will come down to earth a little next year, if only because it would be nearly impossible to replicate the season he just had.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:08 PM
Kingsbury is going to work out well at Tech though. And unlike Tuberville, they’ll actually embrace him there.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:08 PM
Sumlin makes that go. I guess I’m in that camp who thinks the machine will be just fine without Kingsbury. Not saying he’s not a good coach, but I don’t think A&M will miss that much of a beat on offense with him gone. The losses on the OL and at WR will hurt them more than anything.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:09 PM
Yeah but I mean interviewing for a job you have no intention of taking to pressure your current employer – who really really needs you to stay – in an attempt to get more money out of the current employer is a classic contract ploy.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:09 PM
They had a ridiculous amount of talent, only Rich Kotite could have led them to just a 56% winning mark
January 10th, 2013 at 12:09 PM
He was kind of the Mike Tice of his era. Those early 90s Eagles teams had a LOT of talent, on defense alone you had Reggie, Simmons, Joyner, Allen, Waters… the only way you don’t win 12-13 games a year with that much talent is if it’s lead by a bumblefuck meathead like Kotite.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:10 PM
They have a bunch of receivers coming in though, so many that one just decommitted because of likely lack of opportunities.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:10 PM
The losses on the OL and at WR will hurt them more than anything.
Agreed. Swope was Manziel’s favorite target this year and I think he’s a senior.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:11 PM
I guess maybe I’m naive, but I don’t think you go into an NFL interview saying, “no way I’m taking this job if it’s offered to me.”

i still can’t believe tommy tuberville left texas tech for fucking cincinnati. jesus tapdancing christ, that blows my mind.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:13 PM
That will be great for them in 2014 and 2015, but I wouldn’t count on them being as good as Swope and the dude with the funky last name. A&M will be 10-2 regardless, though. They don’t have that daunting of a slate.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:13 PM
that, or with Stoops losing another big bowl game in embarrassing fashion, it could be time for the triumphant return of Stoops to ND!!!
January 10th, 2013 at 12:13 PM
Mike Evans was just a freshman this year, and he’s been pretty damn good. I think they’ve got about a dozen WR commits in that class of 35(!) coming in. I’m sure one of ‘em will pan out.

OT: Read the Silver on Saban column. Just awful. His whole premise was based on Saban’s first NFL failure, then he went on to tout Belichick while recognizing his initial failure.
January 10th, 2013 at 12:14 PM
he might not even be the #1 in 2014 with matthews there. we both know it’s a moot point anyways since it’s not like 1 vs. 4 is that much of a paycut.
im thinkin it’s the “beer hunter” shirt, wayne fontes mentioned. i know i want one.

It’s a fun topic to think about re: if Kelly were to leave. Meyer isn’t leaving Ohio State (though oh my god how amazing would that be?!?!). As with every high profile opening, my first call would be to Petersen. After that, who?

January 10th, 2013 at 12:20 PM
Well I mean EIC already said there might be two posts on it, obviously the other one has to be a prognostication at who would take over.
Gruden obviously will be mentioned.

January 10th, 2013 at 12:21 PM
If this WAS a ploy by Kelly, do you think it jeopardizes his recruiting in any way?
Doubtful. His recruits are likely still seeing that he took an undefeated team to the National Championship game. I mean if he can get them interested in South Bend in the first place he’s probably a pretty decent salesman.

That’s not that bad in a world that’s seen Bloomberg, Villaraigosa, and Bing as mayors of major cities. Could Cincy really be that bad? Lubbock is, I assure you. It rains mud, but also golf ball sized hail.

Soused, I’m reading that NYT article you linked earlier. Just got to this part:
Ellis cranked out a first draft in six weeks. He had recently become fascinated with James Deen, a 26-year-old known as the Porn Star Next Door. Deen, whose real name is Bryan Matthew Seville, is the Jewish son of Pasadena rocket scientists — really. His 4,000 films have gained him a cult of female fans because he is well endowed and sensitive.

January 10th, 2013 at 12:34 PM
Not really. Kelly did a good job getting ND to the title game, but he still is not exactly beloved by most ND fans. The problem isn’t Kelly leaving, but who will replace him. I think there are some quality names out there who would have interest in the ND job, though.

Saban won’t be caught with his pants down the week after a crazy emotional win at LSU. He will spend a long time looking at A&M, Ole Miss and AUB (from a few seasons ago) and have his team prepared for the tempo game they like to play. He’ll also have his team motivated all off season by using the “revenge” factor on A&M.

not to mention the timing of the game. looking at the date that weekend is usually the first full weekend of SEC play, Bama used to play Arkansas that weekend every season, if aTm is slotted there now in that first game of the conference season, no way Saban is overly-prepared to play that game.

Be someone who “gets” ND. Someone who speaks about ND in an over the top manner, like Holtz does on ESPN. Similar to how Hoke professes his love for all things Michigan. Gruden would be someone like that. Do that, and win every game.
Honestly, even before the title game beatdown, I think most ND fans knew that ND was an overachieving team, and got some lucky breaks along the way, even if we don’t want to admit it. Kelly’s first two years at ND were an absolute disaster, and while this season was fun as hell to experience as a fan, the title game shows just how far ND needs to go to compete for a national title. The title game cast some real doubt if Kelly is the coach who can get that done.
I’d hate to see Kelly go, because I do think he is building a great program, but I’m less concerned with him leaving than with who the administration would find to replace him.
