The Maloofs are Finalizing the Sale of Sacramento Kings to a Seattle Ownership Group
Eleven months ago, a Seattle ownership group was putting together a plan to bring a NBA team back to the city, and the target was Sacramento. Today, Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that the Maloofs are finalizing a deal to sell the Kings to that group, led by Christopher Hansen and Microsoft chairman Steve Ballmer. The sale–which is described as being at “first and goal at the 1″ by a source–would be for $500 million. The new ownership group would then apply for relocation by March, in order to start the 2013-2014 season in Seattle.

$500 million for the Kings. The last 7 baseball teams have sold for an average of about $1 billion. Baseball is dying.

Dammit, send the Jazz back to their rightful place in New Orleans first!

The Maloofs. Putting the “Oof” in the NBA.

BRING BACK GARY PAYTON!

Will be funny to see SEA fans fail to see the irony of getting a team in the same way that they lost theirs.

Tim Ryan has that photo pasted to his mirror and then choose what Maloof “Look” to use each day.

Gonna be tough for Jimmer to go to a city that understands basketball and boos his fraudy ass.
January 9th, 2013 at 3:50 PM
CRM will not be happy with you
January 9th, 2013 at 3:51 PM
Seems somewhat different since the new ownership is apparently being forthcoming about moving the team to Seattle. Still yeah, will be good.
January 9th, 2013 at 3:51 PM
I feel old now. The Real World: Las Vegas is over 10 years old now.
January 9th, 2013 at 3:51 PM
Send the Kings to OKC and send the Durantians to Seattle. That’s pretty shitty to take away that Sonics team and replace them with the Boogie and Evans show.
January 9th, 2013 at 3:52 PM
WE KEPT OUR BAND THOUGH
January 9th, 2013 at 3:52 PM
Shawn Kemp has the team ready.
January 9th, 2013 at 3:53 PM
Very exciting day for Seattle sports fans. I feel bad for King’s fans, though. People in the Northwest know first hand how shitty it is to lose your favorite team.

The sale–which is described as being at “first and goal at the 1″
Byner takes the handoff…
January 9th, 2013 at 3:54 PM
So the New Seattle team will have to play in the same crappy arena that the Old Seattle team fled from?
January 9th, 2013 at 3:55 PM
The sale–which is described as being at “first and goal at the 1″
Montee Ball takes the handoff and leaps up and over for the – OH MY – FUMBLE. Ohio State recovers.
January 9th, 2013 at 3:55 PM
More importantly what will their NBA Jam team be like?
January 9th, 2013 at 3:56 PM
So the New Seattle team will have to play in the same crappy arena that the Old Seattle team fled from?
Nah, they have an agreement to build a new arena. Just needed a commitment to move from an NBA team before construction commenced.
January 9th, 2013 at 3:57 PM
Baltimore sees no problem with this
/fuck that 30 for 30
January 9th, 2013 at 3:57 PM
Did the Maloofs sell the team to a group that lied to them about their intentions to keep the Kings in Sacramento? And were the Sonics the worst supported team in the sport?
January 9th, 2013 at 3:57 PM
You’re close, you’re on the green…have Shawn Kemp try on the bra
/No idea if he’s still Cavalier fat
January 9th, 2013 at 3:57 PM
I’m sure they see the irony, but doubt they care
January 9th, 2013 at 3:58 PM
Apparently part of the deal for the new owners was getting a new arena, but yeah for a couple years I guess they will play at Key Arena.

Now, if Cliff Poncier could only get “Citizen Dick” back together again….
January 9th, 2013 at 4:02 PM
How many are him dunking his dick into some lucky lady and having a baby?
January 9th, 2013 at 4:03 PM
That ownership group did a HELLUVA lot of work to get that arena built. That was a significant leap and the work those guys did essentially made them the owners of choice. They were building that arena largely out of pocket (with some local money for some of the roads, etc). Seattle very fortunate to have a group that did all that legwork. It will be a signifcant amount of time for them to recoup all that invested $$$.
January 9th, 2013 at 4:04 PM
Kid and fat jokes aside, when Kemp was at his peak he was the shit, big athletic freak.
January 9th, 2013 at 4:05 PM
Not bad.
January 9th, 2013 at 4:06 PM
We get how people could think there was some irony, but there really isn’t. Clay bought the team and swore he’d keep them in Seattle, even though their ownership group was trading emails laughing about how they were going to move the Sonics. The Sonics were in an arena that 14 years earlier was touted as state of the art by Stern. Stern fought Seattle, offered no support because he had lots of anal sex with Clay. So, really, not ironic, at all. But thanks for really looking into it.
January 9th, 2013 at 4:08 PM
This + 1 billion
January 9th, 2013 at 4:10 PM
In summary, Clay Bennett got Seattle good. An Oklahoma hero
January 9th, 2013 at 4:12 PM
You’re taking a team from another city with fans of their own. So while it’s not the exact same thing in specificity, it’s the same general principle.
January 9th, 2013 at 4:14 PM
That’s like saying suicide and murder are the same because someone is dead. There’s a huge difference.
January 9th, 2013 at 4:17 PM
Not exactly, but whatever lets you sleep at night homeslice. Your city wanted a team. Wasn’t getting a new team, so they had to get an owner to sell. Same as OKC. The Sonics owner being a prick doesn’t change the general principle.
January 9th, 2013 at 4:21 PM
Jesus Christ! Amount of butthurtery over EIC’s digs at baseball is reaching insane level.
January 9th, 2013 at 4:23 PM
Just because Sacramento fans aren’t going to constantly whine about the injustice of losing their team for the next five years doesn’t mean it’s not basically the same thing.
January 9th, 2013 at 4:23 PM
It should put an end to all the “Send the Hornets to OKC and give the Thunder back to Seattle” talk. For that I am glad.
January 9th, 2013 at 4:25 PM
I bet NBA beat writers are happy. Trading in cowtown for one of the best city in America.
January 9th, 2013 at 4:25 PM
The Sonics were always Seattle’s team.
Sacramento is the Kings’ fourth home (I’m sure all their diehard fans claim the title they won in Rochester as theirs).
The city agreed to pay through the ass to build the Maloofs a new arena, the Maloofs backed out because they’re broke and didn’t want to pay any money up front and are just assholes.
With Seattle, the owner sold them to a group that had said they were staying in Seattle when they had defrauded the seller. In Sacramento, the seller is the piece of shit, not the buyer.
January 9th, 2013 at 4:26 PM
Does this mean ‘sonicsgate’ is dead? I hope Seattle fans carry on the tradition.
January 9th, 2013 at 4:38 PM
so Opening Night 2013 will be just ONE game on TNT, right?
Oklahoma City at Seattle
with Clay Bennett sitting courtside with no security
/consider it a pardon from the NBA faithful, Stern
January 9th, 2013 at 4:42 PM
Pretty sure Schultz was a terrible owner too

So that Cleveland stripper died. Sad
January 9th, 2013 at 4:47 PM
This should be cause for a top five Sonics post. Sorry Gary Payton
/Team Dennis Johnson!!!! RIP
January 9th, 2013 at 4:48 PM
Is it just me or does this sound like something the hedge fund manager’s group already has a planned out for. Like Section 6c Paragraph 4 article b sub-paragraph 3 states that if the average annual economic growth for all portions of the greater Seattle area does not average 87%, the public financing is forgiven.
