Ballin’: Devoid of Defense, Lakers Lose 5th Straight, Panic Sets In
Houston 125, LA Lakers 112: Without Gasol and Howard, it was a rough night for Robert Sacre, the former Gonzaga center. He got dunked on by Harden, and then let Harden (31 points) throw a pass between his legs for an assist. The Lakers lost their 5th straight because they played no defense. Houston shot 55 percent from the floor in winning its 5th straight; they’re 5.5 games ahead of LA in the Western Conference playoff picture. Steve Nash recorded his 10,000th assist, making him 5th all-time. He’ll pass Magic (10,141) later this season.
Minnesota 108, Atlanta 103: How weak is the East this year? Atlanta is 3rd in the East (20-13). Boston can’t get going, Philly still doesn’t have Bynum, the Nets have fired their coach, and the Bulls don’t have Derrick Rose yet. Love this stat line from Ricky Rubio: 18 minutes, zero shot attempts, eight assists, four steals.
Milwaukee 108, Phoenix 99: How about 3:20 worth of Larry Sanders highlights? Wait for the nasty dunk at 2:11. The former VCU stringbean scored 10 points and blocked six shots. He’s No. 1 in the NBA in blocked shots (3.2). Phoenix is 12-24.
Indiana 87, Miami 77: Sick handle, Paul George (29 points on 27 shots). How about the Pacers? They were supposed to go in the tank without Danny Granger, but everyone else’s struggles have helped Indiana to a 21-14 record, first place in the Central, and tied for 3rd in the East. There are more than 40 games left in the season, but that’s quite a coaching job so far by Frank Vogel. Also, Gerald Green got his head at or above the rim on this block.

Not very. It’s very injured (Bynum, Rose, Granger), but the Heat-Bulls-Knicks will be just as good as OKC-Mem-LAC once healthy

The non-Big 3 for Miami went 4-22 for 11 points last night. Yikes.

The entire NBA is devoid of defense, not just the Lakers.

Harden & Lin been wrecking shop for a month. Fun team.

Completely false.

First time in my life I bet NBA games this year. Wow. These guys turn it off and on when they want to. One team goes on a 12-0 run and you feel like “yeah!” and then the other team comes back on a 15-0. WTF??? Seriously, the best bball games are played at the local bball park/court. Win to keep the court or GTFO.

The Daryl Morey guffaws have strangely stopped.
Feeling pretty damn good about my “over 30.5 wins” bet on Houston.
January 9th, 2013 at 11:59 AM
Buncha flawed teams out West too. Griz can’t score, Spurs depend too much on role players, & I hate most of the players in the Clips rotation.
The best team is OKC and they got the Kendrick Perkins issue ( the issue being that he plays a lot for somebody who sucks)
January 9th, 2013 at 12:02 PM
Blame the preposterous 82 game season
January 9th, 2013 at 12:02 PM
“The Daryl Morey guffaws have strangely stopped.”
Yeah, the Lin and Asik signings are looking pretty solid now. Especially Asik. Guy just dominates the defensive glass. Double-double machine.
I still hope that Portland fizzles out and that they make Lamarcus Aldridge available. I think he’d be a perfect fit and a major upgrade over the Patterson-Morris poo-poo platter. Would probably have to throw in Terrance Jones too.
January 9th, 2013 at 12:02 PM
I hate this line of thinking
January 9th, 2013 at 12:02 PM
!!!
January 9th, 2013 at 12:04 PM
As opposed to the fact that they are playing defense at a higher level than anyone in the league?
It was silly that people were writing them off to begin with.
January 9th, 2013 at 12:04 PM
betting basketball is pure lunacy.
/guy races down and launches three at the buzzer to cover in a 115-102 game

Who was ripping him?
I think he’s a solid GM. Slightly above average
January 9th, 2013 at 12:06 PM
But that valid point doesn’t fit the “east sucks” narrative

Every one of you are wrong, no defense in the NBA. Don’t make me post this again in all caps.
January 9th, 2013 at 12:13 PM
only for people who’s idea of good basketball is watching a bunch of gritty gutty guys give it their all, dive into the stands, and pass the ball 20 times in a 45 second clock. But for those who like to watch the best players in the world be good enough to play stifling defense yet also good enough to still win offensively over that stifling defense, the NBA is the thing.

Houston will be a perpeutally middling team. Good regular season offensive team that will be overwhelmed in a playoff series.

“Houston will be a perpeutally middling team. Good regular season offensive team that will be overwhelmed in a playoff series.”
I get that you are expressing an opinion, but do you have any facts to back this up? Perhaps the current roster will struggle to have playoff success, but Morey is far from done. Rockets are among the league leaders in available cap space. They have flexibility to add pieces either during the year or in free agency.
January 9th, 2013 at 12:27 PM
Like I said when people were ripping him here, he was crushing every trade. He just wouldn’t take the easy way out and tank to get a franchise player. But all those smart little trades got them enough assets for Harden.
They could get Josh Smith in the summer. Then it gets real.
January 9th, 2013 at 12:27 PM
What young, attractive but disposable assets do they have? I’d venture to say Harden, Asik, Parsons are the only guys that fit the “young, attractive” billing, but they aren’t disposable
January 9th, 2013 at 12:40 PM
Montiejunas, TJones, Royce, Greg Smith, plus can pair Cook, Delfino, and Aldrich expirings. This offseason they will be around 13 million under the cap.
January 9th, 2013 at 12:45 PM
Free agency they can be a factor, no doubt. Nobody is taking White, and I’d be shocked if they got any quality from Smith, Jones, Lithuanian via trade. The expirings are small contracts too
January 9th, 2013 at 12:45 PM
(record scratch)
are we talking about the same guy here?
January 9th, 2013 at 12:53 PM
If Royce is put on the market there will be teams jumping at him, regardless of his issues (He’s on a rookie deal and this is a league where Beasley just signed for $6/yr). And individaully the expirings are small, but paired together and with a youngster they equal ~$9…enough to get someone like Varejao (before he required surgery). If you add in the current cap space they have, it’s enough to trade for someone like Gay.
January 9th, 2013 at 12:56 PM
No, they won’t. See: NBA Draft 2012
January 9th, 2013 at 12:57 PM
Here’s the thing about Beasley. He was the #2 pick and actually plays in NBA games
January 9th, 2013 at 12:58 PM
Royce White is just about done in this league. No team wants to deal with being thrown under the bus for doing the right thing for the team. Royce White is just a bitch who wants everyone to do what HE wants so he can cope with his anxiety disorder. As I keep saying, I have an anxiety disorder but I take my medication and get the fuck on with my day.
January 9th, 2013 at 12:58 PM
define “jumping at him.” can the Rockets get anything of value for a guy who seems intent to not play? I can only see him moving in a trade if he’s some kind of throw-in to make salaries or roster sizes match up.
January 9th, 2013 at 12:58 PM
Im surprised people in Bammer watch the NBA
January 9th, 2013 at 1:00 PM
If Royce continues to not show up, the Rockets will have a good case to void his contract and not pay him anything else
January 9th, 2013 at 1:01 PM
Anderson Varejao is hurt again? Next thing I know, you’ll tell me that spencer likes golf
January 9th, 2013 at 1:02 PM
Why? They’re crazy young, and have plenty of cap space in the 4th largest city in America. They have plenty of trade pieces, and they develop their players in the D-League as well as anybody. The future looks bright for the Rockets to me.
January 9th, 2013 at 1:02 PM
Clev ain’t trading Varejao for cap relief. Excellent player, in his prime, on a good contract. Why would Memphis give Gay away during their contending window? At least the rumored Suns trade has the Grizz getting Dudley in return. Houston can’t offer near that caliber of player, unless they give up Parsons
January 9th, 2013 at 1:03 PM
sctrojans, it’s more like other teams won’t trade for Varejao because he gets hurt every year (just like the news today that he is out 6-8 weeks)
January 9th, 2013 at 1:07 PM
He’s been hurt the last couple years, true. He did play in 157 games in the 08-09 and 09-10 seasons combined though. Look at the contract the Knicks gave Amare despite his history. Talent is finite, especially at the big spots, and Varejao is among the leagues best at what he does
January 9th, 2013 at 1:41 PM
The only fact is their current roster. Who or what they’re able to make a run at is speculation. If we’re dealing with speculation, who are the big free agent signings looming on the horizon?
January 9th, 2013 at 1:43 PM
Dwight Howard! Deron Williams!
