College Football: A “Way Too Early” Top 20 For 2013
The 2012 College Football season has ended, thus we look ahead to 2013. Here is a preliminary Top 20, with all usual caveats about it being way too early to consider such an endeavor. No. 1 is no surprise.
1. Alabama: The Tide are the top seed until deposed. Alabama will see some turnover along both lines, though that will be “Nick Saban turnover.” A.J. McCarron returns. So do a multitude of playmakers and starters from what was a young defense. Roll Tide.
2. Oregon: Chip Kelly did not feel his business was quite finished. This should be a team that can do that. Marcus Mariota comes back, along with most of the offense. Perhaps a full season of awesomeness from DeAnthony Thomas? The question will be whether, unlike 2011 and 2012, they can avoid that hiccup that costs them a shot at the title game.
3. Stanford: The Cardinal have their quarterback in Kevin Hogan. They bring back almost every starter along the offensive line and on defense. That Top 10 recruiting class David Shaw reeled in during the 2012 cycle should creep in and start to make an impact.
4. Ohio State: The Buckeyes return pretty much the entire offense for Braxton Miller’s 2013 Heisman run. They also will have a year’s experience in Urban Meyer’s offense. The question will be their defensive front. There’s substantial turnover there, but also some scary young talent.
5. Oklahoma: Yeah, Bob Stoops has hit a plateau, but it is a high one. The 2012 Sooners team was underwhelming. That underwhelming team went 8-1 in a tough Big 12. Oklahoma should have more offensive line stability. They shed Landry Jones’ malaise. Some rebuilding to do along the defensive front, but if that side of the ball can be decent they should be slight favorites in the Big 12.
6. LSU: It seems like the entire team declared for the NFL Draft. This staff, though, has a proven track record of grooming defensive talent. They have a senior quarterback with a big arm and depth and talent returning on offense. It’s hard to trust the head coach, but it is equally hard to ignore the talent he recruits.
7. Florida: The Gators’ defense should withstand the personnel losses. We’re interested to see more from sophomore tailback Matt Jones. Can Florida develop something resembling a passing game? Or, will Will Muschamp continue throwing offensive coordinators at the problem until he has a down year and gets himself fired?
8. Oklahoma State: Mike Gundy can coach. The Cowboys suffered dramatic personnel attrition on offense in 2011. They went from a 28-year-old senior to freshmen at quarterback. They still finished third nationally in yards per play. This was the best eight-win team in the country and should bounce back in 2013.
9. South Carolina: Connor Shaw returns, as does most of South Carolina’s offensive line. Can Spurrier keep him healthy? The Gamecocks have the biggest game changer in the sport on defense, and one hell of one on offense and special teams presuming Ace Sanders comes back. As usual, they should be potent and perpetual risk to step on their own feet.
10. Texas A&M: Sumlin and Manziel had a magical year. They also inherited a veteran, loaded team. The Aggies lose a lot up front on defense. They have massive turnover at running back and wide receiver. A let down seems like a definite possibility. Much may depend on whether potential first-round tackles Joeckel and Matthews return.
11. Wisconsin: There will be adjustments with Gary Andersen replacing Bret Bielema, though it can be best not to mess with a functional machine. Almost everyone not Montee Ball returns for Wisconsin on offense. The Badgers have a ton of upperclassment up front on defense. They should bounce back strong in 2013.
12. Notre Dame: The Irish lost. It is now safe to discuss their weaknesses. Notre Dame’s offense needs work. They lose Manti Te’o on defense. This team should be competitive, though they can’t expect to ride slim victory margins and every marquee opponent having a down year for a second-straight year.
13. Boise State: We saw the floor under Chris Petersen, with Boise having close to if not the fewest returning starters in college football in 2012. That floor was 11-2 with a bowl win over the Pac 12. The Broncos’ defense should be formidable. We suspect Joe Southwick will build on a strong Las Vegas Bowl performance and get the offense running.
14. Texas: Texas brings back maybe the deepest running back corps in the country, its entire offensive line and almost its entire defense (which can’t be as bad as it was in 2012). Questions linger at quarterback and head coach. They get put here until those questions are resolved.
15. Florida State: This looks like your typical Florida State team under Jimbo Fisher. Ridiculous talent on the defensive line. Zero coherence on offense, which is supposed to be Jimbo’s specialty. This is another “FSU should go 11-0 heading into the Florida game” schedule. What signs have the Seminoles given to expect that?
16. Georgia: This should be a fun team to watch. Georgia finished No. 1 in yards per play offense, and has pretty much that entire side of the ball coming back, most notably Aaron Murray. On defense, though, the Dawgs are losing Jones, Jenkins, Rambo, Ogletree and a lot of depth. That was from a unit that underperformed in 2012. Mark Richt’s team won’t get to float against a soft schedule in 2013, playing three of their first four against Clemson, South Carolina and LSU.
17. TCU: Joining a tougher conference can be rough. So can losing your starting quarterback mid-season. The Horned Frogs will be back to Gary Patterson talent level on defense next year. They will have more experience at quarterback than they had in 2012. They are in that second tier that could step forward to make a run at the Big 12.
18. Clemson: Clemson will be Clemson. They kept Chad Morris and have a ton of receiving talent coming back. They will hope Tajh Boyd will be there to throw to him. The defense remains a work in progress, though they should outscore most opponents.
19. Nebraska: The Cornhuskers will have one of the top Big Ten offenses next season and be limited against good teams if unable to stop the run or reign in the turnovers. The fortunate thing? They dump Ohio State and Wisconsin from the schedule and that won’t be exposed until the bowl game.
20. Michigan: The Wolverines remain about two years away from critical mass with Brady Hoke’s recruits. Michigan will be a very young team next year. That said, those young players are well coached, competed with some very good teams this season and face a schedule that appears much kinder in 2013. Al Borges will also have an entire year to prepare Devin Gardner for quarterback duty.

Wisconsin way too high. TAMU too low.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:12 PM
Husker is going to lose his mind with Georgia that low. LSU and South Carolina feel too high. Stanford might be the best team in the country.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:13 PM
aggie has a proven replacement at RB and WR. should be higher.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:14 PM
Oklahoma way too high.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:14 PM
Thank you for not putting Jimbo and the FraudSU Noles in the top 10.

Travis Frederick is taking his magnificent beard to the NFL, that matters
January 8th, 2013 at 12:17 PM
the potential losses on the OL seem to be more of a concern than anything aTm might be losing. I also think a lot of coached will be studying tape on aTm all off-season so it would shock me to see Manziel have the same type of season that he did this past year. not saying they are going to have him or the offense figured out, but it also won’t be catching anyone by surprise next year.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:17 PM
Jon Wilner ranked Ohio State no. 10 in his final poll (up from 14!).
January 8th, 2013 at 12:18 PM
14. Texas:
LOLonghorns.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:18 PM
UGA and Clemson too low, Stanford and Oklahoma too high.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:20 PM
Half the Top 10 are SEC. Sounds about right.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:20 PM
Unfortunately, yes. That defense is a mess.
…and I still need to see Bell try to throw the ball outside of a play-action fake to the FB.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:20 PM

agree with all of this, but they have some decent replacements on the o line. also, stoops had 4 weeks to not be surprised by manziel, and he still got killed.
i fear a serious aggie run, maybe even a second place division finish, is coming.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:21 PM
15 – 20 range.
Their schedule is so favorable to start, that if they beat ND they could be undefeated entering November.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:22 PM
5-8 seem a little high.
Louisville needs to be on there somewhere. And fairly high, too.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:22 PM
Michigan has no business being on this list.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:22 PM
Where is UConn? They beat Louisville in Louisville.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:22 PM
Bama way too low
January 8th, 2013 at 12:23 PM
Where’s PSU? O’Brien would like another raise.
Not sold on LSU at No. 6 at all.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:24 PM
I just don’t see it. Undeserving, really.

You forgot the part about “luck”.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:27 PM
LSU No. 6? Did someone slip you a pot brownie in the clubhouse?
Truthified.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:28 PM
If they’d just get rid of their shitty coach, they’d be more deserving.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:28 PM
Is Queefer in this list anywhere?
January 8th, 2013 at 12:28 PM
I was actually about the make that joke, dammit.
I don’t have a problem with Alabama at No. 1. Although I’m not sure McCarron’s return is a huge deal. Anyone can hand off and check down behind that line, right?
January 8th, 2013 at 12:29 PM
Holy fucking shit. I swear you did this to troll me. Florida that high? UGA that low? Wow.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:29 PM
Notre Dame is lucky the refs didn’t leave at halftime. Absolute best case scenario is that the call is made correctly and ND only loses by three TDs. Who cares?
January 8th, 2013 at 12:30 PM
And again, Johnny Football = Petey Otterloop
January 8th, 2013 at 12:30 PM
I would guess Trevor Knight ends up being the starter. Probably not Day 1 but I don’t think Bell can actually pass. We’ll see though.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:32 PM
Florida is losing 8 starters from a defense that got them their wins. They, sadly for them, aren’t losing Driskel or Pease. But sure…let’s put them in the top-10.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:32 PM
All I know is that McCarron is winning the girlfriend battle over Manziel. Take that, Johnny Heisman.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:33 PM
Oklahoma this high is just awesome. Wonderfully awesome.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:33 PM
McCarron’s chick is more impressive than the three titles.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:34 PM
I was kinda’ thinking Cody Thomas would be the next Texas HS QB to blow up in our faces. Maybe it’ll be Knight.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:34 PM
This.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:34 PM
On their way to a 7-5 season and the addition of 2013 to their ring of honor?
January 8th, 2013 at 12:34 PM
seriously, all it needs is Florida State about 10 spots higher and it is like every other year.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:35 PM
Florida also has road games with LSU and SoCar. 9-3 sounds about right.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:35 PM
I look forward to the Bell Dozer arm punting his way through the B12, though.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:35 PM
HuskerDawg gonna need his BP meds.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:36 PM
Louisville loses 3 starters from this year’s team and we are bringing in more talent at almost every position. Throw in another year for Bridgewater to get better and one of the easiest schedules in the country and it will be a letdown if we don’t go undefeated.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:37 PM
The number before the paragraph do not go together. Did you mean 17?
January 8th, 2013 at 12:38 PM
Butters, you’ll be happy to know you won your $20 bet about Queefer saying Shaw is a better coach than Saban. I’m not sure who owes you the money though.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:39 PM
I just realized L’ville isn’t even listed here. Not your best effort, Duffy.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:39 PM
7-5 seems really generous.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:40 PM
Paging Spencer: This is strange. You remember that dude who acts Russian and shoots guns on YouTube? HE was shot and killed.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:40 PM

Butters: psssh, you know he’s going to name all the good ones
Does Shaw not belong on that list right now>?
January 8th, 2013 at 12:41 PM
I’m okay with making a prediction for the season and basing the rankings on that. This is, I assume, a prediction of how good they’ll and not b based on merit.

Oregon State was better than NINE of those teams this year, and will be better than at least SEVEN of them next year.

Someone: Name great coaches in college football
Butters: psssh, you know he’s going to name all the good ones

On the list of coaches better than Saban? Not only no, but fuck no.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:42 PM
Probably some anti-gun nut got him.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:42 PM
Louisville finished 44th in SRS, 38th in FEI, got blowed out by Syracuse, lost to UConn at home, had some narrow wins against TERRIBLE teams. That was the best season they’ve had since Petrino left. That weighed more heavily, for me, than one bowl game performance.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:43 PM
I thought more guns was the way to prevent gun violence. Now I’m just confused. Please help me figure this out, FoxNews!

No joke I’ve spent the last hour in a Wikipedia hole that started with At The Mountains of Madness and ended up with my tri-annual spree of reading about sea monsters and deep sea gigantism. So this excites me.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:45 PM
I had a 5 minute face palm after seeing that for 2012. But yeah, the next couple of years is going to be rough now that a lot of the main players were seniors and are now gone. I still can’t believe I’m going to miss Matt McGloin. What world am I living in?
January 8th, 2013 at 12:46 PM
They’re only going to get better, though. Did you look at their roster? Do you see how little they lose, and how much better their recruiting has been?
January 8th, 2013 at 12:46 PM
Louisville not ranked here is the biggest crime. That said, doing these type of rankings a day after the season ends are a fool’s folly anyway.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:47 PM
Correct me if I’m wrong but that’s not the guy who shoots the guns, that was FPSKyle or whoever, the guy who was in the Call of Duty commercial. The dead guy just runs the company I guess?
January 8th, 2013 at 12:48 PM
Yea, if Vegas were for some reason offering a wager on Louisville finishing in the top 20 next season, I’d take out as much money as Wells Fargo was willing to loan me.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:49 PM
sea monsters and deep sea gigantism
Considering we know more about the surface of the moon than we do about the ocean floor, I like to think that there’s still some crazy shit down there that we’ve never come across.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:49 PM
Del Toro better make that movie.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:49 PM
They are, of course, but they’re fun. Just like mock drafts. I think UF being that high is 1b to L’ville’s absence being 1a. UF is getting gutted on defense, but unlike UGA, they don’t have the offense to (hopefully) carry them through the first 4-5 games.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:49 PM
Agreed. They also have farther to go than most people think to be a legitimate Top 20 team.

How do you figure? They were awful this year and have less talent going forward.
I disagree, but I do appreciate you commenting. Now about that Florida pick…

I could be dead wrong on Louisville. It’s January. I’m also not getting swayed by a bowl game again. See: West Virginia.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:52 PM
I thought I read they are transitioning to a 3-4. That “bounce back strong” is more like “pray to hell they understand their new assignments”.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:53 PM

That’s a good example, but I think L’ville cares too much about defense to not excel next year.
Expect 1-2 blown the fuck up assignments where a dude will be more open than you’ve ever seen. Happens to every team that transitions.

January 8th, 2013 at 12:55 PM
Seems like they might want to knock on this guys door.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:56 PM
West Virginia played a difficult schedule this year. Louisville plays a hilariously easy schedule next year.
If you don’t want to say they are one of the 20 best teams entering the season next year, that’s fine. But they will finish next season in the top 20, I’d bet my existence on it.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:56 PM
Somehow, some way, USC will begin next season in the top 15.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:57 PM
Boise brings back a ton. In Petersen I trust. I bet they’re good next year. OKST is interesting. I don’t know what they lose though.

January 8th, 2013 at 12:58 PM
Nebraska is going to be the softest 9-3 in the history of the sport next year. Can’t wait for that. Offense should be great though.
January 8th, 2013 at 12:59 PM
Quite likely. This is the 20 best teams. I don’t rank teams based on schedule before they have played it.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:01 PM
What the fuck does this even mean, Husker? Sounds like some bullshit being flung around.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:01 PM
Bama’s slate is cookie dough soft after A&M and LSU. Gotta think 11-1 is the worst they’ll do. A&M is in the same boat, though. Other than Bama and LSU they’re home free. SoCar gets the break this year and doesn’t get any of the big 3 in the West, but they lose a ton on defense. UGA could start as bad as 1-3 or 4-0. The SEC East will be fun next year.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:01 PM
Any offense that asks T. Martinez to throw a pass, by definition, cannot be great IMO

January 8th, 2013 at 1:03 PM
WVU doesn’t give a fuck about defense. They simply want the ball. Would they like that to come via a punt? Sure, but it’s no big deal if it’s off of a TD because they assume they’ll score more times than you. Holgorson is so overrated. I’d want him as my OC, but never as my HC.

Ohio State has no business being less than 11-0 heading into the Mich game. They have more talent than any other team in that league. MSU is still a dumpster fire because they have no QB, no WRs and their TE and RB are gone to the draft, along with some studs on defense. Mich should be better, but Lewan staying or going will go a long way for them. They do lose some off of a good defense, but much to the chagrin of Spencer, their DC is legit. Northwestern I don’t know much about other than they’ll probably play everyone tough and lose 4 games, per usual. If Wisky is indeed transitioning to a 3-4, they are going to step back on defense, but I would assume they’ll be classic Wiksy and run the ball well and hit you with play action. Penn State is irrelevant as is Purdue, Indiana, Illinois and Minny.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:09 PM
Have you seen their recruiting class!?
January 8th, 2013 at 1:09 PM
best QB in the conference right now.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:09 PM
I must have missed it, but any thoughts that Marrone is gonna bring Nassib along to Buffalo?
January 8th, 2013 at 1:10 PM
Does rushing for 200 against a great MSU defense not count?
I’m a beaten down Husker fan. I just assume they’ll lose 3 games now. The thought of UCLA ripping them up in Lincoln sucks, too.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:10 PM
Not against it, WWoS. Give him a year to develop and then see what he can do/send Fitztragic packing
January 8th, 2013 at 1:10 PM
Is this how you expect them to finish or how good these teams are right now plus recruits?
Because Louisville is better than TCU right now. Not sure how anyone could argue otherwise.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:11 PM
oh man, Nebraska hosts UCLA? damn, that may get ugly
January 8th, 2013 at 1:11 PM
MSU can still win 8 or 9 games next year. Schedule is a joke.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:11 PM
I am eager for Syracuse to continue the recent tradition that is Virginia Tech choking when it matters
January 8th, 2013 at 1:12 PM
Teams take on the personality of their coach. That’s neither new nor shocking.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:12 PM
I’ll take Mariota and Price in their systems. Maybe Kelly and Hundley too
January 8th, 2013 at 1:12 PM
No. I just think they might improve from the 40ish best team by most statistical measures to the 20-25th best team.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:12 PM
I whiffed on Fitzpatrick. Liked the idea of giving him a couple seasons while they build around him. Dunno if he’d have done much better in another system, either. The extension they gave him was silly though.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:12 PM
For whom? UCLA and NEB will each put up 500 yards.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:12 PM
I dunno if I’ve disliked a college football season more in recent memory. Thank god it’s over. More and more, I’m becoming an NFL guy.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:13 PM
No, considering my knock was on his passing abilities
January 8th, 2013 at 1:13 PM
What about Florida tells you they should be 7th?
January 8th, 2013 at 1:13 PM
meh, Mariota needs to show improvement. Then again, a QB isn’t as important in Chip’s system as are the running backs. Best thing Stanford did was make the QB change mid season.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:13 PM
Really? I thought the deliberation was closed on Price. I liked him when I saw him at some point last year, but I thought he had a terrible season. Is he redeemable?
January 8th, 2013 at 1:14 PM
You said the offense couldn’t be good, yet it was and is.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:15 PM
I’m going the other way.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:15 PM
Would have been 12-1 had they done it before the ND game i think. Would have been a Bama-Stanford slog fest last night.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:15 PM
I think that both the NFL and college seasons this year were very weak. I can only think of a couple of great games out of both leagues. The NFL’s sucked more because almost every big primetime game ended up being a blowout.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:15 PM
So, basically, this entire paragraph shows you don’t watch the Big 10. That’s what I figured. But there’s some entertaining football being played in the Big 12 and Pac 12.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:15 PM
lol. Neither the best in his division or his state.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:16 PM
I like the NFL, but I have no connection to it like I do with CFB. If Atlanta wins the super bowl I’ll be thrilled, but I want cherish the moments like I would if UGA won it.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:16 PM
I didn’t think the NFL season was that great, but the lack of depth in the league really made sure all the top teams made the final 8. The only ‘good’ team missing is NYG, and they certainly didn’t deserve anything the way they played. I can’t remember the last time a poll of the best 8 teams in the league would match up this well to seeds/final 8… am I missing something?
/getting pumped
January 8th, 2013 at 1:16 PM
never mind that Syracuse was 21 in overall offense and Cincinnati was 34. It’s not like Louisville was playing teams that were all in the 80-124 range
January 8th, 2013 at 1:16 PM
The 2nd part of this is actually true. No wisconsin or OSU on the schedule.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:17 PM
Agree to disagree my man. Hope all is well though.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:17 PM
He had a terrible season playing behind one of the worst offensive lines in the county. Absolutely redeemable.

Who’s starting QB for MSU next year? Open competition?
January 8th, 2013 at 1:18 PM
Best qb they’ve had with Chip. Devastating runner, competent passer
I think so. Didn’t watch all UW games to comment on consistency, but the talent is definitely there
HuskerDawg teaching Point Twisting 101…I said “Any offense that asks T. Martinez to throw a pass, by definition, cannot be great IMO”
January 8th, 2013 at 1:20 PM
Thinking about it, the 4 clear best teams in the NFC are the 4 left. You could argue the top four in the AFC over the course of the year are left, and that HOU/BAL are dinged more because of the way they finished, but both should be considered better than IND/CIN.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:20 PM
he might be legit, but a one-dimensional OSU still gashed the shit out of michigan with a weak squad this year. in urbz we trust.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:20 PM
I hope so, but I fear that Dantonio will just hand it to Maxwell. Kind of like he did back in the day with Hoyer. Got an intriguing dual threat kid coming in, but the backups are dog shit. So, probably maxwell.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:21 PM
i can’t remember the specific state but this year is the first time since the wild card was introduced that the same 4 teams from last year’s divisional round are the one’s playing this year (Denver, Houston, Baltimore, New England)
January 8th, 2013 at 1:22 PM
That sucks.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:22 PM
They scored 26. Braxton needs to learn how the throw the ball inside the 20s to take the next step.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:22 PM
New England won’t be gifted a path to the Superbowl again like they were last year.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:22 PM
any chance that the backup in Columbus is actually better than Miller? especially in the passing game?
January 8th, 2013 at 1:23 PM
It’ll be awesome actually. MSU sucking is nice to see as Dantonio seems like such a prick. I plan on making that game, actually.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:23 PM
So does Maxwell.

/Lions’d
January 8th, 2013 at 1:23 PM
agreed…but again, one-dimensional. and in those windy, wet conditions, im not gonna hate too much. they only scored 26, but had the ball for 38 mins and it wasn’t especially in doubt. and you gotta figure they’ll take a step forward with another year of experience.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:24 PM
Yup. I expect the defense to improve drastically, too. Ohio State is going to be very good the next two years. Enjoy it. Winning conference titles and playing for the NC must be nice.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:25 PM

January 8th, 2013 at 1:25 PM
OSU left a lot of points on the field with stupid penalties and dumb play calling. Braxton will be much improved next year.

January 8th, 2013 at 1:27 PM
I think Florida and UGA have the biggest bust factor going into next year regarding SEC teams. UGA due to schedule and defensive youth. Florida due to offensive issues and defensive youth. I think most people know LSU is going to be in for a few losses with how much they’re losing.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:27 PM
All I hope for is Penn State to start 0-1 after they lose to Syracuse at MetLife Stadium
January 8th, 2013 at 1:27 PM
oh it’s great…tho seeing indiana, purdue, illinois and minnesota aint much fun. wish the b10 had someone even at miss state’s level aside from michigan, wisky and nebraska. penn state and michigan state wouldve been included in that list, but god smote them.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:27 PM
SEC next year really should be Bammer, aTm, cackalacky, and then everyone else.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:27 PM
Racked up most of his passing numbers v garbage defenses.
Definitely no Max Wittek
January 8th, 2013 at 1:28 PM
i dunno…i like UGA, sakerlina and florida. LSU’s got talent too.

“We should draft Manti Te’O at 5!”
/Sunday’d
January 8th, 2013 at 1:29 PM
this was just so bizarre…they looked typically stout for long stretches and then would miss five tackles on one play leading to a score. really strange how they’d just get brainlock at least a few times per game all year long.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:29 PM
I think OSU loses one game next year when somebody runs for abour 350 yards on them. I hope not but it seems likely. That front four will be exposed 1-2 times methinks.
Teams didn’t fuck with Hankins or Simon. It’s going to be a rude awakening for us next year. We better score a shitload of points. Nor am I content with the WR situation.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:29 PM
Until Florida and LSU get QBs, they are out of the discussion. UGA perhaps but they are losing some key defensive players. We also aren’t sure what Murray is doing..
January 8th, 2013 at 1:30 PM
Not if it means cowbells at B1G games, leave that for the hill people
January 8th, 2013 at 1:30 PM
SoCar gets up for UGA games so much. They scare me. LSU has talent, but surely they can’t lose what they’re losing on defense and not skip a beat, right? SoCar loses 7 or 8 defensive starters and some quality on offense. UGA will have an athletic defense, but it’ll be young. That always scares me. Their offense will be so good provided the OL stays healthy though.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:30 PM
Stupid Stefon Diggs….
January 8th, 2013 at 1:30 PM
they have so much young talent on the DL it’s kinda scary tho…im much less concerned about the DL as i am with the WR situation. that’s so fucked right now.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:31 PM
How so? He’s coming back, but do you mean occasionally throwing a mind-numbing INT? Because those still happen.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:31 PM
Oh, i didn’t know that Murray was returning.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:31 PM
i wouldnt sleep on driskel…he has all the physical tools in the world, and i didnt see him making mental mistakes, just being slow in getting rid of the ball and being inexperienced. i think he can be really good.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:32 PM
I’d rather see them instead of Western, Central, or Eastern every year.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:32 PM
Reading this gives me hope that NEB could win a shootout if they get to Indy.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:32 PM
WR is very thin after Smith and Brown.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:33 PM
dont forget the hawkeyes!
January 8th, 2013 at 1:33 PM
yea, but at least you get ND.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:33 PM
WFS is right. Playing Illinois and Indiana every year are more automatic as wins than playing any of the Directional Michigan schools.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:33 PM
He was super highly touted, but I’m not so sure he’s very good at actually throwing the ball.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:33 PM
but they’re just SOOOO forgettable!

really? he’s got a gun. granted, he doesn’t know where he’s shooting quite yet, but that ball’s got some heat on it.
/no homo
January 8th, 2013 at 1:35 PM
That’s what I’m saying. He has little accuracy and even less at WR to work with. How UF doesn’t have WRs is beyond me, but they don’t and it’s been that way going on three years now.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:35 PM
They’re getting to the point again where if Kirk Ferentz is really still alive they’ll pull some 9-3 year out of nowhere and be in the Outback Bowl
January 8th, 2013 at 1:36 PM
Best arm in the country- Max Wittek
Driskel has huge talent, but his coaching hasn’t inspired confidence. I actually like Mettenberger’s talent too, but it didn’t flash with nearly enough consistency this year

January 8th, 2013 at 1:37 PM
yea, who’s fault was this? brandon’s?
January 8th, 2013 at 1:37 PM
He started it for sure, but Muschamp will sign his third? class in a month and he has not fixed it. The skill guys were awful when he came in, though. It’s never good when a TE/H-back is your most dangerous weapon.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:39 PM
ND and the ACC’s fault

*the one play per game he realizes where he is
urban didn’t “start it.” they had a bunch of WR’s from previous classes and then he was gone. muschamp’s just missing out. and im not saying urban would’ve gotten those WR’s either since he’s missing out on em left and right here.
/sadface
January 8th, 2013 at 1:40 PM
no. Kenny Guiton will make the right zone options reads (something that Miller struggled with), but was nowhere near the gamebreaker that Braxton is. He also doesn’t have the arm strength. Brax, even though he didn’t show it regularly, has the ability to make NFL throws, Guiton doesn’t.
Brax has to improve his completion percentage. Playcalling should improve with more Hyde North-South and WR screens to uncovered WRs.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:40 PM
oh fuck them right in the face. ND’s full of shit.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:40 PM
Correct. Brandon, along with pretty much everyone associated with Michigan wanted to keep it going.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:40 PM
I’m not sold on Borges running an offense, but I love me a Mattison-coached defense. He turned Will Campbell into a solid lineman after 3 years of fucking worthless. Considering the type of talent and versatility they are recruiting on defense, I would expect Michigan to have a top 3 defense in the B1G at worst. The only position they have to think about replacing production is from Kovacs. As good as he was, no matter who they put there will be more athletic. I trust the coaches to teach the system at this point.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:41 PM
Related to the whole Giant Squid thing – did anybody see The Hunter? It was out last year – Willem Dafoe searches for a extinct/very rare mountain lion.
Exceptional movie.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:44 PM
Spencer: Did you read EDSBS’s recap of the Sugar Bowl? His line on Dubose was fantastic.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:44 PM
you know i hate him for the exact reason you mentioned (athleticism) and i never thought IN A MILLION YEARS id be agreeing with the above quote. but you’re right…dude was as productive a safety as there was in the conference for the past two years.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:45 PM
If Pelini could recruit like Hoke the Michgigan-NEB games would be fantastic. Instead Michigan will win 65% of those match ups.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:45 PM
i remember there being a fucking great one, but i dont remember off hand…i’ll check it out now tho.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:46 PM

January 8th, 2013 at 1:47 PM
Jalin Marshall has an opportunity to step in right away. Kid will be special.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:47 PM
He got absolutely fucked by J.T. Floyd getting high and missing the bowl game. Asking him to cover receivers going deep is the only thing he couldn’t do at the college level. Michigan being down their top 2 CBs made his job so much more difficult.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:48 PM
Not so much recruiting them. He lands good prospects. He just can’t find anyone to coach them. It’s almost like the football gods won’t let LSU be that good. They can have boatloads of talent, but an OC is just not allowed.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:49 PM
Sounds like they have also gotten in on the recruitment of Reuben Foster, the #1 LB in the class. Giving Mattison all of these toys is going to make for some fun defenses.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:50 PM
teo made the heisman field look even worse this year. good god.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:52 PM
Ha! No fucking chance getting him out of the South unless you guys hire Trooper Taylor (then you’ll have him locked in).
January 8th, 2013 at 1:55 PM
Louisville needs to be on there somewhere. And fairly high, too.
Going to guess Louisville will be overranked entering next year in the AP. Doing a wrap and we did outperform the AP and Coaches Poll in our preseason rankings.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:57 PM
Agree that they could be overranked, but not having them in a top-20 seems strange to me with what they bring back.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:58 PM
Sounds like he got to know some of the recruits at the Under Armour game. Said there was a good chance he would make it to campus. If that happens, I like the chances of Mattison winning him over. Would be a nice cherry on top of having the #1 Guard, the #1 RB, and a top 5 QB in the class.
January 8th, 2013 at 1:59 PM
You should read up on his history. He’s not leaving the South unless you bring Trooper Taylor with him, which would be akin to literally asking the NCAA to look into your program.
January 8th, 2013 at 2:00 PM
The definition of delusional:

January 8th, 2013 at 2:01 PM
Yikes.
January 8th, 2013 at 2:03 PM
Foster is desperate for a father figure. He never had one and his HS coach was just that before he was fired. He then got in good with Trooper and even transferred into the HS where Trooper’s son goes. He was a lock to AUB as long as Trooper was there. Now It seems to most that Bama and UGA are the top two, with WASH a distant third. He’ll visit other schools, but he has a young daughter, so I would be STUNNED if he doesn’t end up at Bama, UGA or even back to AUB.
January 8th, 2013 at 2:14 PM
Joeckel going pro. Could be the No. 1 pick in the draft.
January 8th, 2013 at 2:20 PM
I actually like Mettenberger’s talent too, but it didn’t flash with nearly enough consistency this year
L’il Rape took a lot of heat this year, but I thought the real problem was once the two O lineman went down, the line couldn’t pass block for shit. On almost every passing play this year, LSU maxed protected and ran one or two receiver routes. If the receiver was covered, Mett was fucked.
Also doesn’t help that Beckham can’t catch.
January 8th, 2013 at 2:22 PM
KC’s got an OK OL…he wont make it past philly tho.
January 8th, 2013 at 2:23 PM
But wouldn’t an OK line go to outstanding if he’s as good as advertised? Of course Reid will want a WR or some shit like that.
January 8th, 2013 at 2:27 PM
And deservedly so. Dude has zero pocket awareness.
January 8th, 2013 at 2:29 PM
Can’t wait for the LSU game in Athens this year. The story lines will be lame of course, but I always like playing LSU.
January 8th, 2013 at 2:32 PM
Am I wrong, but I recall him being garbage until they played Alabama?
January 8th, 2013 at 2:34 PM
probably, maybe, who knows? they need a lot tho, taht’s for sure.
January 8th, 2013 at 2:36 PM
He was. The Bama game seems to have been a turning point of sorts. He’s still nothing special, though.
January 8th, 2013 at 2:37 PM
It’s like a lightbulb went on in his head in the second half of that game.
Unfortunately, it went back off later in the season.

Michigan, Nebraska, Clemson, TCU, FSU, Texas, Boise St., Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Oklahoma St., Oklahoma. — I know, that’s more than nine.
January 13th, 2013 at 1:49 AM
Wow Ty – guess you’ve stirred up a lot of public interest from the total fan base from the USA – have never seen 251 comments to a Probably top 20 for 2013 – much needs to be adjusted by you as some of these are ‘way out there in left field’ Well count me in as I’m now #252 on your list:
#3 – Stanford? what are you smoking? Just because they ended up @ #7 AP ranking – was mainly due to their last 5 games. Don’t forget they lost to ‘dum-dum’ Notre Dame in O/T & loser – Washington and barely got by unranked Wisconsin by 6 points – I’d move them to #10 as the little offensive power they had – is gone – No more Stephan Taylor. Knock this team down to at least #8 or #9
#5 & #6 – Oklahoma & LSU – No Landry Jones for Oklahoma (need help) & half of LSU’s team went to NFL – I’d bump these both down at least 5 notches.
#7 Florida – they showed what they’re made of in the Sugar bowl game/lost their dominance completely. Knock them down 3-4 notches
#8 OK State – Where did they come from? An (8) win team doesn’t translate to #8 best? Try again Ty – double their # & make them a realistic #16
#10 – Texas A&M – guess this team will be a one-man band for awhile – (just like KSU had in 2012 w/Klein) bump them to #5 – BTW – didn’t they murder your #5 team (Oklahoma) in the Cotton bowl?
#11 – Wisconsin? Are you smoking again? Didn’t this team have an 8-6 record, unranked (maybe Top 50), lost their one-man band – Montee Ball, and you’ve got them at #11? How about rounding out the Top 20 with them?
#12 – Notre Dame? I think you’re being generous – maybe pampering their wounds from the NCG – best I could see them would be @ #15 if they could beat all (7) of those cupcakes again by 3 points.
#13 – Boise State – This one is a joke! You’ve got these guys ahead of both Georgia & Clemson. Did you grow up in Idaho & have an allegiance to BSU? If you need to keep them in your top 20 – them make them #19 – or take them off list – as they’re still holding their funeral for the loss of Kellen Moore – 2011.
#16 Georgia – What’s going on here? They finished at #4 – AP – Aaron Murray is back & they submarined to #16? – better have an explanation – move them up to #6 to take LSU’s place.
#18 – Clemson? What happened to this team? Smokin’ again? Didn’t this team beat LSU – in the Chick-fil-A bowl? Yes, I know – only by 1 point, but a ‘win is a win’. Move them up to #8 to take OK state’s spot.
#20 – Michigan – not impressed with their finish nor Mich. State – take them off the list.
Those teams you should ADD-IN:
Louisville – WHAT HAPPENED? Maybe you were blown-away that they whipped Florida – Put them in @ least #10 (this replaces Tex A&M’s spot)
Oregon State – yes, they slipped at the end but they’ll be in the Top 15 next year – put them in @ #14 or #15
UCLA – yes, they were 9-2 prior to playing Stanford twice – but they’ll be back stronger – only a few lost players to sr. year or NFL – put them in @ #16 or #17.
That’s all I have – I’m sure there will be more comments to follow.
