Robert Griffin III Will Travel to Alabama to Have His Knee Further Examined by Dr. James Andrews
Mike Shanahan held his Monday press conference, and stated that Griffin III will travel to Alabama for further testing with James Andrews. Never a good sign.
Robert will fly down tomorrow to see Dr. Andrews. He’s going to have some more tests and a physical exam. I’m not sure right now the extent of his knee. Anytime you do have a former ACL injury, or an LCL, and you take a look at this MRI, sometimes its old injuries. That’s why he’s going to fly down there and see Dr. Andrews, get some new MRIs, get a physical examination. And so right now, everything is total speculation. When I do know the extent of the injury, I’ll let you know.
The questioning also turned testy when the topic of Dr. James Andrews came up, in regard to Andrews’ revelation that he did not clear Griffin to return in the Baltimore game. ”There was no miscommunication with Dr. Andrews” after the Ravens game, Shanahan insisted. “I asked Dr. Andrews if he was okay to be in the game. He said ‘yes’”. When pressed, Shanahan fired, ”[w]hy don’t you get a hold of Dr. Andrews, and you ask him.”
To be clear, the Redskins have already done MRI’s. Shanahan said there were differences of opinion on the MRI. Dr. Andrews was at the game, and it was not revealed whether he had already reviewed any from the last 24 hours. When asked about whether there was a concern, Shanahan said “there is a concern, that’s why he is going to go see him.”
Shanahan also drew a comparison to Adrian Peterson doing pretty well without offseason practice after his injury, though he is not going to speculate on the extent of the injury.

Shanny is such a bullshitter. His knee is shredded. No problem distinguishing old injury in MRI after BAL game, but NOW it is an issue.
January 7th, 2013 at 3:34 PM
Maybe someone can clear this up for me. Is Dr. Andrews on the Redskins medical staff? Or did he just happen to be a guest on the sideline?
January 7th, 2013 at 3:34 PM
Boom!
January 7th, 2013 at 3:35 PM
Andrews is the team doctor. He also makes a shit ton of money on his own. IMO, Andrews doesnt need the skins’ money and he had to say what he said on saturday. A little CYA
January 7th, 2013 at 3:36 PM
I’m confused as to why Andrews was even there if there weren’t taking medical opinions during the game. This guy is the best in his field and didn’t pipe up to say “hey … so I can tell he can’t put pressure on that”?
January 7th, 2013 at 3:36 PM
Why does he have to travel to alabama? Andrews was AT THE GAME yesterday.
January 7th, 2013 at 3:38 PM
Honestly had no idea he was their team doctor. So that answers that question. Just knew him from his Bama practice and all the TJ surgeries.
January 7th, 2013 at 3:39 PM
His practice is in Alabama, would imagine he would rather do it with his equipment. Plus knee scans usually have a day or two layoff so swelling reduces.
January 7th, 2013 at 3:40 PM
He’s going there to have surgery.
January 7th, 2013 at 3:40 PM
So how doped up was RG3 yesterday?
January 7th, 2013 at 3:41 PM
Why does he have to travel to alabama? Andrews was AT THE GAME yesterday.
That’s where the white women are at.
January 7th, 2013 at 3:41 PM
how long has Andrews been the team doctor for ‘Skins? Yesterday was the first time I’ve actually seen him on camera. figured he was some dark and shadowy figure.

No idea but from his website:

Not as much as Ray Lewis.

Why does he have to travel to alabama? Andrews was AT THE GAME yesterday.
It’s all about announcing this in the right news cycle.
January 7th, 2013 at 3:45 PM
So I’m guessing he’s just brought in for specific instances right.
January 7th, 2013 at 3:45 PM
crap, this is not going to end well.
January 7th, 2013 at 3:46 PM
The NFL should drug test after every playoff game. That would be fantastic.
January 7th, 2013 at 3:46 PM
more accurate
January 7th, 2013 at 3:46 PM
More importantly, what was in that mysterious sideline shed? Have to assume there were some Varsity Blues-esque injections happening back there
January 7th, 2013 at 3:47 PM
Hilarious that the Birmingham Barons are in included in “the professional sports arena” but the LPGA has to wait for the next sentence.
January 7th, 2013 at 3:47 PM
That quote about Shanahan convincing TD to go in and run a play when he couldnt even see seems more and more telling
January 7th, 2013 at 3:50 PM
If Griffin is to believed, he’s the one who convinced Shanahan to keep playing, not the other way around.
Health aside I still think the most jarring thing is that Shanny didn’t make the switch for the football reasons aside.
January 7th, 2013 at 3:50 PM
Better hope he dont get all twitchy and destroy him like he did Jack McDowell.
January 7th, 2013 at 3:51 PM
Gasol and Howard both out indefinitely for the Lakers.
/wanking motion
January 7th, 2013 at 3:52 PM
Right? What the hell is that all about? I know that stadium floating in a swamp is a dump, but you got sheds on the sideline?
January 7th, 2013 at 3:53 PM
Cowboy – I’m just saying that quote shows Shanny has a willingness to let players play hurt. Call it a blind spot.
January 7th, 2013 at 3:53 PM
Can you imagine the firestorm that would have erupted had he done so and Cousins did nothing?
January 7th, 2013 at 3:54 PM
Mike Shannahan looks like that very old doctor in Being John Malkovich.
/If I was 80 years younger, I’d box your ears.

Kirk Cousins just wins.

/does the DX chop to Michigan
January 7th, 2013 at 3:56 PM
Definitely. Though I don’t think that’s exactly a unique trait. Are there any NFL coaches that have a reputation for pulling stars when they’re “hurt” but not “injured”?
RGIII couldn’t plant his leg. They would have had a better chance to win with Cousins out there from the second TD on, and that’s what matters, putting yourself in a position to win.

are we sure the skins team doctor isn’t James Andrews and is really Bob Newhart?

This.
January 7th, 2013 at 3:58 PM
Not to mention the claims of “He’s a pussy!” & “Play through the pain!” that the media would have thrown at RG3.
January 7th, 2013 at 3:58 PM
I understand that. I’m just speculating on some of the things that might have been going through Shanahan’s head.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:00 PM
maybe. I think Cousins would have been destroyed by that defense.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:00 PM
This is it right here.
If he doesn’t go back in, he’s a pussy and doesn’t care about the team.
Which is why it should not have been his choice to go back in.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:00 PM
Tomlinson sat on the bench that one AFC title game and sulked like a little bitch. Cutler came out that one game and got destroyed on twitter.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:01 PM

But did the coaches pull them or did they come out by their own choice.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:01 PM
Dr. Moonlight Graham?
January 7th, 2013 at 4:02 PM
I mean he didn’t exactly light it up when he DID come in. But they put up around seventy yards of total offense after they went up 14-0 (and he visibly started looking real bad). Not good.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:02 PM
It’s a completely different scenario with no injury involved, but it somewhat reminds me of Grady Little and Pedro. Sticking it out with, basically, a God, in crunch time when they’re not at their best and there are probably better options.
I don’t imagine Shanny will suffer Grady’s fate, however, despite the ramifications possibly being much worse.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:03 PM
That’s because no one likes Jay Cutler and it always looks like someone just ran of his dog then pissed on it.

Not a good reason to risk one’s career.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:04 PM
He tried to play through it after spraining it the earlier week, which was fucking gutsy for a running back.
Jim Brown and the rest of the guys that destroyed him for it can just fuck off. Again, feel a lot less sorry for these guys with their debilitating injuries when they’re shitting on people for taking injuries seriously.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:05 PM
Will Montgomery (WAS C), is not getting any blame, but deserves some. His snaps towards the end of the game were horrendous, and it was his bad snap that caused Robert’s knee to explode in the first place!
/knee was fucked before that, though
January 7th, 2013 at 4:06 PM
BTW Rex, your Ray Lewis/Starbucks line, I almost spit my coffee everywhere when I read that. They should make a video of people doing that at random places and get people’s reactions.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:06 PM
Also, I’m no doctor, but I play one on The Internet…
The extent of Griffin’s injury was probably already sustained before his final play. The abnormal movement of his knee was due to the instability already in the knee due to the torn ligaments.
/[blows into stethoscope
//”Is this thing on?”
January 7th, 2013 at 4:07 PM
I was thinking that at the time. “Oh man the snapper just ruined Griffin’s career!”
Yep.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:08 PM
Oh I totally agree, but saying it was a simple choice for Shanny and/or RG3 to take him out, in the middle of a playoff game, is asinine. Much easier for us armchair QBs to make that decision today.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:08 PM
Certainly possible given the fact that he couldn’t carry weight with it. The hits on the second TD drive had to have been what did it.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:09 PM
Just saw a tweet that he’s out 14-18 months.
Will Shanny’s head roll?
January 7th, 2013 at 4:09 PM
Everyone was saying it after the second scoring drive though.
Again this isn’t Jordan playing lights out with the flu, once his leg went, Griffin was awful.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:09 PM
Welcome back to the NFC East basement Washington. Enjoy your stay.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:10 PM
Did he get his leg amputated?
January 7th, 2013 at 4:11 PM
Shanny should be grilled more for leaving an ineffective guy out there in a playoff
Game than about griffins long-term health
January 7th, 2013 at 4:11 PM
Guess they ain’t dealing Cousins for a second round pick, huh?
January 7th, 2013 at 4:11 PM
14-18 months what?!!!!!!!
January 7th, 2013 at 4:12 PM
ACL and PCL, per Magary’s retweet.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:12 PM
It’s actually how I imagine Hernia enters everywhere.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:12 PM
Can we talk about Arians shitty protection schemes. He’s gonna get Luck killed. They should pre-schedule w/ Dr. Andrews for an elbow reconstruction.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:14 PM
These things heal concurrently…this length of time would surprise me greatly. Especially for someone in peak physical condition with the world’s best orthopedic surgeon.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:15 PM
Maybe Peterson can lend him some of that HGH.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:16 PM
Rich coming from a “Dream team” fan. Would still rather have Cousins than Foles next season.

The Steelers were crazy for letting Arians go! Said people who don’t notice shit like this. Hilarious that Arians is getting lots of head coaching talk right now.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:18 PM
14-18 months is the most arbitrary injury timeline I have ever seen.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:18 PM
Surgery in ALA and then rehab in Germany.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:19 PM
Apparently the Richmond TV station that reported it has taken it down.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:19 PM
The Richmond news station that “broke” that has already deleted it from the article.
My guess is some dipshit heard ACL and PCL, say that recovery times were 7-9 months, and then just doubled it for being two ligaments.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:20 PM
Not that the blockers were great, but he got Couch killed. Then treated Ben like a rental car, now Luck leads the league in hits. It wont end well.

LOL, that is great.
Here is some evidence from Baylor that RG3 needs to be protected from his own competitiveness, regardless of the game outcome.

January 7th, 2013 at 4:23 PM
If you love bubble screens, Bruces Arians is the next Bill Walsh.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:25 PM
Shanny will then have RGIII run shuttle drills until he collapses, just to be on the safe side.
January 7th, 2013 at 4:27 PM
Whats being lost in all of this is the fact that RG3 is, in fact, not a cornball brother. Only real brothers, who are down with the cause, lie to their white coaches about the extent of their injuries. Way to stick it to the man, RG3!

Redskins got an MRI. Andrews can see it in DC or Birmingham with today’s technology. There is nothing to be gained from going to Birmingham. All NFL teams must have a season ending press conference. Now the Skins have done that. Now they don’t have to answer any further questions from the media regarding whether he should or should not have been playing.
January 7th, 2013 at 6:46 PM
I have a hard time blaming either Shanny or Griffin. How does Shanny know when to pull Griffin? How do you make that choice? This rookie QB who will be great and he’s fought for you and carried this team to the playoffs! How do you know when to pull him? Would you be able to walk that fine line to make that call? Shanny is asking Griffin if he can go because Griffin earned that right the way he played and toughed it out. Griffin on the other hand is telling his coach he can go. Griffin was never going to quit on his coach and his team. The skins were in this game into the 4th quarter and both of them were playing for the win.
How do you make that call?
January 7th, 2013 at 7:30 PM
RGIII couldn’t plant his leg. They would have had a better chance to win with Cousins out there from the second TD on, and that’s what matters, putting yourself in a position to win.
Well, Wilbon was on PTI today and said anyone outraged at Shanahan on RGIII is a mope. And Wilbon’s never wrong about shit…
