Mama gets what Mama wants. Ga Tech had him twice and lost him. Not sure UGA was ever really in the picture. Dude is a total beast.
Best in the business, but it does help that he is devoid of any conscience and will accept a commitment and then tell the kid to fuck off days before signing day if a bigger, better fish comes along.

January 7th, 2013 at 8:18 AM
Those UNLV teams from 1990-91 were probably still the best starting 5 I have ever seen in college hoops. Amazing teams….
January 7th, 2013 at 8:21 AM
The roundup girl certainly has English teeth. Even good dentistry can’t hide it.
Nice rack though.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:24 AM
Loved his program. He’ll get in the HoF, after he passes away. The NC2A can be pretty vindictive when it wants to be.
Also, “Roll Tide”.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:26 AM
Can we talk about this?
January 7th, 2013 at 8:27 AM
Like the curves on our subject today. Don’t recommend getting a larger picture of that mug.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:29 AM
The Good Will Hunting story is fantastic.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:30 AM
How many awful quarterback sons does Joe Montana have that got scholarships strictly because of who their father is? Three?
January 7th, 2013 at 8:31 AM
The only candidate who already owned a snow blower large enough to actually accept the job.
If anyone is waiting for Belichick to retire its OBrien. Kelly will flop in the NFL, which is why I’m shocked the Browns didnt hire him.

Matt Damon seems like good people.

He has: UVA, NC St, Miami, and UNC all above Maryland? Len will be ACC POY before becoming a top 5 pick in the draft.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:40 AM
@liquor: why do you say that, because of his offense, or his coaching style?
January 7th, 2013 at 8:42 AM
Strangely fascinated by the pickpocket video
January 7th, 2013 at 8:42 AM
ben affleck? still an asshole.

Nick Saban, master recruiter. [WSJ]
Best in the business, but it does help that he is devoid of any conscience and will accept a commitment and then tell the kid to fuck off days before signing day if a bigger, better fish comes along.
And he and Houston Nutt can be thanked for the trickle-down effect on other sports. I’m not sure of the specifics, I just know that several baseball coaches I talked to a few years ago credited them with new NCAA rules changes that affected baseball scholarship dispersal and walk-ons. Of course, maybe it was just an excuse …
January 7th, 2013 at 8:43 AM
lol @ “meet.”
January 7th, 2013 at 8:44 AM
Mostly offense, that gimmick shit wont work for long and gets your QB killed (/waves at RGIII). Also because he’s never dealt with any media scrutiny whatsoever. New Hampshire and Oregon? Try dealing with the Philly media.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:45 AM
Saban is fantastic and all that, but if Richt operated like he did just in terms of recruiting, I think UGA would have a title or two. There are times when I’m proud that Richt is the way he is. Tonight will not be one of those when the game kicks off.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:45 AM
The only division completely eliminated from the NFL post-season is the NFC East.
/if only they had more more exposure and primetime games……….
January 7th, 2013 at 8:46 AM
well, except for the fact that richt and his staff aren’t a quartile of the on-field coaches that saban and his crew are…cmon, it’s not like UGA struggles to get talent.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:46 AM
I am also skeptical, but I’m bummed we’re not going to see his system in the NFL next year. I was quite intrigued.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:47 AM
listen, i miss 2009 as much as anyone, but it’s time to let it go.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:47 AM
A&M Girls, no and no.
/would if I was drinking and it was getting close to closing time
//who am I kidding, yes and yes
///Gig’em
January 7th, 2013 at 8:48 AM
They get talent for sure, but they were 5 yards short against Saban playing with 12-15 less scholarshiped players. They don’t cut players like Saban does, and more importantly, they don’t risk oversigning which means they often end up undersigning. They can sign 35 guys this class and not oversign.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:49 AM
Trying hard to care about this game tonight, but I don’t know if it’ll happen by kickoff. Think I’m going to keep binge-watching Breaking Bad.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:49 AM
Well, if Roger Goodell is really interested in “player safety” and “protecting the players,” he should suspend Mike Shanahan, fine the Redskins, and dock them a couple of draft picks. Actually, considering the precedent he set with Sean Payton, Goodell would have to suspend Shanahan for 3 seasons; you know, since Shanahan was really guilty of doing something wrong.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:49 AM
I forget which game it was, one of the Saturday playoff games I think, doing the intros it felt like 30% of all the starters for both team went to UGA. And none of them won a conference title.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:51 AM
Tonight will suck. No matter who wins, we all lose. I have to pull for Bama and it has nothing to do with being an SEC fan. I hate Notre Dame that much. What sucks is I’m resigned to game being close.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:51 AM
From the Saban article:
Maybe the qualifier “in the current era of college football” saves this, but I’d like to introduce the writer to Nebraska ’94-’97.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:52 AM
Agree with all of this.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:52 AM
sounds like we’re in agreement that talent isnt the issue for why UGA isnt on bama’s level, it’s coaching. excellent.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:52 AM
And if the officials weren’t the worst of all time, NEB would have won it in 1993 as well. Imagine a team winning a title in 93, 94, 95 and 97? Insane.
/watch Bama win it next year
January 7th, 2013 at 8:53 AM
/if only they had more more exposure and primetime games……….
/waves at Breesus.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:53 AM
2.5 isn’t 3, bro. blame whichever cunts felt like michigan was worthy that year.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:54 AM
Lots of links here I’ll be checking later.
Tarkanian has said a # of times that if the NCAA didn’t come up with reasons to tear that one Fresno team apart, that team would have been his best ever. Bold words.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:54 AM
It’s recruiting ideology as much as anything. if UGA oversigned I’m convinced they’d have a title under Richt. Such is life.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:54 AM
I’m here for the hockkake.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:55 AM
Is this where I get to talk about how insane UGAs offense is going to be next year? The Clemson-UGA season opener is going to look like a B12 shitshow. 45-42 sounds about right.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:55 AM
And the one in 94 is universally considered fraudulent and undeserved as well, so 1.5.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:55 AM
And one of those they shouldn’t have won since they played a shitty schedule and the true #1 had the better team by a mile.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:55 AM
Yeah, I’m pulling for a meteor. It’s a shame too, because I don’t hate ND like the rest of the Internet. I just don’t believe the Irish are one of the two best teams in the country. Do they deserve to be there based on the system we have? Yup. Can I overlook their inordinate amount of luck and struggles against bad teams? Not really.
To be fair to the Irish, though, Alabama has many of the same problems.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:56 AM
Writer’s not taking retirement gifts into account.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:56 AM
Ran into a realistic ND fan over the weekend at a Gap. He thinks they lose by double digits tonight because “our offense is putrid and we haven’t seen a real defense all season.”
January 7th, 2013 at 8:57 AM
Yeha, I’m not sure how the Nebraska thing works given their fraud Osborne retirement title in 94.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:57 AM
But that didn’t stop the guy from dropping $1800 on a ticket and flying to MIA for the game tonight.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:57 AM
The shitty turf at FedEx field didnt help either. Same field that claimed Adrian Peterson’s knee.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:58 AM
Yeah, I’m pulling for a meteor.
Order of things I’m rooting for tonight:
1. Notre Dame winning
2. meteor
3. A draw
4. Both teams getting sick at halftime and declaring a no contest.
…
1,145. Alabama winning
/fuck Nick Saban
January 7th, 2013 at 8:58 AM
My kinda game. Last team with the ball wins.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:58 AM
Say what now? NEB would have curb stomped Michigan.
This is easily the worst Bama team to play for a title. Of course they’re very good, but they are so fucking beatable. I still weep at the thought of the ending of the SEC title game.
/fuck
January 7th, 2013 at 8:58 AM
In that movie, Matt Damon had definitive frat-boy hair in Good Will Hunting. Should be put in a time capsule so that era is accurately documented.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:58 AM
Same boat as me…will be hate watching tonight’s game hoping ND gets embarrassed
January 7th, 2013 at 8:59 AM
The shitty turf at FedEx field didnt help either. Same field that claimed Adrian Peterson’s knee.
Fine the turf and suspend it for a couple games, then.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:59 AM
97 and they would have whooped Mich’s ass. In 1994 they won it because Penn State struggled with crappy Indiana. Oh, and the football gods knew that Paterno was letting his BFF butt fuck kids.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:59 AM
I thought fighting over ketchup was ridiculous. Then I read this sentence:
Eating at Subway is bad enough. Eating at a Subway situated in a Walmart is like a concentric circle of hell.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:59 AM
Ummm…Penn State in 1994.
Once again, fuck Dan Synder.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:59 AM
BTW… Johnny Football.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:59 AM
Stanford was legit. Of course, they should have lost that game. But still, they’ve seen a real defense.
Also, I’m not sure how good Alabama’s defense really is. It’s more rep off last year’s squad than anything else. The Tide played three competent offenses all year — LSU, A&M and Georgia — and allowed a combined 69 points. Good? Sure. Great? Nah.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:00 AM
as long as youre not saying richt wouldve won that title the year they lost to colorado, i think i’ll be able to drop it.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:00 AM
I’m not watching the game tonight because I will be at the laundromat thanks to my washer crapping out on me.
I’d hit both those AM girls at the same time. They seem fun in a catty kind of way. Remember all girls are a drink away from being bi-curious.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:01 AM
//Farts
January 7th, 2013 at 9:01 AM
Penn State played their subs in the 2nd half of that game against Indiana. They should have done what most college teams at the time did, which was steamroll weaker opposition by 50 point margins.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:01 AM
you know, maybe if you had names on your jersies, writers wouldnt have thought PSU was an overgrown d-II team.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:02 AM
97, otherwise known as the Tom Osborne sympathy championship.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:03 AM
This. Bama just isn’t as good defensively as their stats indicate. They’re just not. Luckily for them they’re playing a team with a terrible offense. If ND had LSU’s offense I’d pick them to win the game.
Speaking of LSU: They’re losing 6 defensive starters to early Draft entries. Damn.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:03 AM
BTW… Johnny Football.
i was in the field suite on the aggie side, and got to see JM up close. he is tiny, and it is just unreal what he can do. he is just so quick. you guys are set for awhile. very, very impressive.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:03 AM
i prefer to think of it more as michigan’s halfionship. their only since the korean war. but yea, they’re a superpower.

January 7th, 2013 at 9:04 AM
Is this your way of congratulating Team USA on winning gold in the World Juniors?
January 7th, 2013 at 9:04 AM
So what kind of bump does the ol’ Chipper get from Nike U? Gotta be nudging close to $9MM per year after this.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:04 AM
The Tide played three competent offenses all year — LSU, A&M and Georgia — and allowed a combined 69 points. Good? Sure. Great? Nah.
And The Tide were THIS close to losing to Georgia in the SEC Title Game. So I second your point.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:04 AM
“Don’t give it to Michigan because they haven’t seen it in 50 years, give it to us because we’re the best team in the nation.” –Christian or Jason Peter, right before pounding Oxy and then beating his GF.
/he was right, too
January 7th, 2013 at 9:05 AM
Are you still getting your season tix? I’m wondering if STH will sell off their tix if they’re annoyed/pissed off for cheap.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:05 AM
Please, that Nebraska teams stomps Michigan.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:05 AM
I blame his enormous rib pads.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:05 AM
I hate you so, so much.
Manziel is a mite, which I think helps his cause. I don’t think he’s done growing. If he ends up around 6’1 and 210 there’s hope for him as an NFL QB. He reminds me of Darren Sproles when he’s carrying the ball.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:05 AM
He’s so god damn fast…but homeboy has no shot at the NFL as a QB. His arm is Pennington esque at times. He’s going to wreck shop in college though.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:06 AM
Wait, did someone insinuate that ND ran a competent offense?
January 7th, 2013 at 9:07 AM
Agree with Bob Valvano’s rant.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:07 AM
Don’t forget about LSU. Alabama loses that game if anyone other than Miles coaches that team in the last two minutes.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:07 AM
Well since the NHL was reinstated, I figured this news would get bounced to the Icin’ post later today.
/we’re calling it “Icin” right?
January 7th, 2013 at 9:07 AM
I already sell off a bunch of seats….going to every game is cost prohibitive.
I considered dropping them altogether, but likely won’t, unless some of my regulars that get seats from me drop out.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:08 AM
I think this was less of him turing down the NFL and more of the NFL not giving in to his demands. I suspect he went in to the meetings asking for complete authority only to be told no. I don’t think this was a case of Kelly being given all that he asked for and simply saying no thanks.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:08 AM
That was a great tournament.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:08 AM
Bullshit. That 97 Michigan defense is one of the best college defenses I’ve seen. Maybe they should have come up with a groovy nickname like Blackshirts or something, but that defense was legit. Plus Michigan didn’t need a lucky catch against the likes of Missouri to survive and carry on.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:09 AM
what happened to rg3 knee? from above I can only presume he’s starring in murderball 2; pros vs. landmine joes
January 7th, 2013 at 9:09 AM
Bama played 3 good teams all year. 2 of them out played Bama and the third came within 10 yards of beating them. Bama is not a juggernaut. But again…NDs offense is so crappy that I see Bama getting away with it.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:09 AM
Are you still getting your season tix? I’m wondering if STH will sell off their tix if they’re annoyed/pissed off for cheap.
I’m waiting for my youngest boy to get a little older, then I’ll put in for season tickets. If I had season tickets currently I would keep them.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:09 AM
He’s so god damn fast…
4.55, not a blazer. he just stops on a dime and squirts through the line. he made some very nice throws, too. he dropped one into swope on the sideline that was about a 40 yard throw. swope’s momentum carried him into the rail on our suite, and he yelled in my face. awesome.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:10 AM
Is this your way of congratulating Team USA on winning gold in the World Juniors?
Never.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:10 AM
+1 illegally kicked TD pass against Mizzou
January 7th, 2013 at 9:10 AM
i mean, are we all taking our stupid pills this morning?
the tide were close to losing to two top ten teams? are you fucking kidding me? this is not a bad thing. they won.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:10 AM
Play in the league though?
January 7th, 2013 at 9:11 AM
Play in the league though?
who gives a shit?
January 7th, 2013 at 9:11 AM
NEB would have run all over them. Woodson would have been rendered moot. Greise would have been eaten alive. Pretty sure NEB played the tougher schedule, too.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:12 AM
so they didnt DESTROY the 3 “good” teams they faced (all of which are top 10) but DID destroy all the others.
you definitely have been taking your stupid pills this morning.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:12 AM
Thinking he’s a 4th/5th rounder in April.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:13 AM
Yeah, that’s the problem. ND just can’t move the ball enough to win, IMO.
No, I am not kidding you. When trying to evaluate a team, it doesn’t matter that they won. It matters how they played.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:13 AM
Lisk’s post back then was awesome. Detailed the history of kicked TDs. The odds of their occurrence. The rules that, back then, seemed to imply their legality. Good stuff.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:14 AM
if that dude gets drafted at all, i’ll eat crow. he’s the jordan kovacs of offense.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:14 AM
Yeah, I’m thinking Nebraska would have won by 145.67 gazillion points.
//Farts again. Waves it around.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:14 AM
Mint- i know i give aggie fans crap because of how crazy delusion they are, but it looks like now they will have plenty of ammo. i said aggie is not our problem anymore, but that was mainly because we dont have to deal with the fans anymore. now i am glad we dont have to play yall either.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:14 AM
Damn, I really liked that Good Will Hunting article.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:14 AM
Bama played 3 good teams all year. 2 of them out played Bama and the third came within 10 yards of beating them. Bama is not a juggernaut. But again…NDs offense is so crappy that I see Bama getting away with it.
this is the 3rd NC game for Bame in Saban’s 6th year. for that reason alone, Bama is a juggernaut.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:15 AM
I wonder if aTm’s ascendancy makes a revival of the Ags-Horns game more or less likely? I really hope it returns soon.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:15 AM
this is retarded…if we’re going by that rationale, there isnt a national championship caliber team this year then. pretty much everyone’s looked like crap.
and, even if they looked “crappy” they still FUCKING WON. good god man.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:16 AM
I’d be interested if you don’t get interest in some games. We’ll talk over the twitters or e-mail.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:17 AM
Teams are always on the lookout for the next “Welker.”
Undersized white guy with tons of heart and grittiness? Someone will take a shot on him.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:17 AM
I’m not saying they aren’t great. I’m saying the inevitable (is Bama the greatest EVAR) will be overblown. They’re very good. But this team is a helluva lot closer to 10-3 than 13-0. That’s all.
The program is a juggernaut for sure. I was talking about this year’s team.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:18 AM
Penn State was royally screwed in 94.
That Good Will Hunting Article was fantastic. In fact, I think I’ll watch that movie when I get home.
I actually met him at the airport in Philly a few years ago. I felt bad approaching him because I don’t like being bothered and I’m not even famous. Long story short though, he was one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. Shot the shit for an hour talking about various movies, sports etc. Great dude. Never met Affleck, I have an irrational dislike for the guy because one of my first celebrity crushes was the women he currently bangs on the regular so for that reason alone Affleck is dead to me. I do like his brother though.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:18 AM
Nebraska didn’t play the tougher schedule. Penn State and Ohio State by themselves were probably tougher than what Nebraska had to face. Tennessee was a paper thin number 3 team that year.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:18 AM
Look how far that idiot fanbase rode the undefeated (and probation’d) ’94 season. The hubris from this improbable run will last a long time.
I think we come back down to earth next season with 8 wins.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:19 AM
yea, there have been quite a few of these guys, only they ran faster than 4.7 and didnt round off every route they run.
the only thing he has in comparison with welker is skin tone. he’s sloppy and slow as shit but makes a few great catches and tries hard…great. sounds like a UFA to me.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:19 AM
What does this say about ND almost losing to PITT, in South Bend no less?
January 7th, 2013 at 9:19 AM
Not sure either team wants it. A&M has to deal with Bama, LSU and the rest of the West as it is, and Texas doesn’t want little brother whipping their ass.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:19 AM
TXAM will be definitely be a problem for teams in the SEC. That win the other nit against Chokelahoma did more for recruiting than their records this season in the SEC. Any kid who lives in TEX and the surrounding sates and wanted to play in the SEC, but didn’t want to leave the state, is gonna look at TXAM real hard.
I like TXAM. I love the offense that Sumlin runs. Uptempo and they love to score points, perfect team to bet on. Bama got an opener when they played them. One of the first teams to go uptempo on them and Bama was not ready. Bama expects teams to match up with them and then Bama goes from there with adjustments. Bama and LSU are in for some real battles in the West, especially if Sumlin can recruit some good Def players. hats off to them.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:20 AM
and that’s fair…it’s been a shitty year for CFB. entertaining as hell, but not exactly a banner season.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:20 AM
Ehhh, a lot of caveats with that. They backed into this year’s title game, included only because two teams ahead of them suffered late-season losses. Name recognition got them in last year over a more deserving OkST team, and the got their first title when a Heisman finalist QB got hurt on in the first quarter.
Is Alabama a good team? Yes. Have they had an extraordinary amount of fortune over the last few years? Yes. Do they have massive built-in advantage in getting to the title game because of the name on their jersey? Yes.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:20 AM
RE-TAIN-ER. Retainer. Nobody works in this town without a retainer.
But we’ve already offered you the job.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:20 AM
I wonder if aTm’s ascendancy makes a revival of the Ags-Horns game more or less likely? I really hope it returns soon.
if the horns are interested in getting destroyed, then they will renew it.

re Shanahan decision on RG3: not going to play along in the “what if” game. RG3 was the reason they made the playoffs. he deserved to have a chance to take them to the next round of the playoffs. unless the medical staff felt sure he shouldn’t play (which they didn’t, even Dr Andrews flakey ass), then the decision lies on Shanny and RG3.
bottom line is that the seahawks were the better all-around team and that’s why they earned the trip to atl.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:21 AM
That they suck and have no business being in this game, but somehow they’ve managed to fall up the stairs, not down, and are indeed 12-0.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:21 AM
Bill OBrien presser is awesome, dude is badass. No bullshit in that guy. Said he got no raise, which if true is garbage, pay that man his money.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:21 AM
Won’t argue. That scouting report makes him the perfect Jerry Jones player.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:22 AM
you should shut up now. you just described every single national champion ever in the history of the game ever in life history.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:22 AM
I will say this. Mike Sherman is one hell of a college recruiter.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:23 AM
I would agree that there isn’t a really good team this year. Stanford’s probably the best team in the nation and they have two losses. Whoever wins this game is probably the “worst” of the BCS champs.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:23 AM
ive always liked him as a coach too…he’s another one of those coordinator dudes who shouldnt get a head gig.

What’d Dan Snyder pay to have Andrews on the sideline yesterday? Thinking $500k is the floor.

He may not have gotten a raise but he was given a gift of 1.3 mil from Terry Pegula.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:26 AM
for fuck’s sake brian hartline was getting compared to welker before draft time even tho the tall, big, fast hartline’s purely a deep threat…pretty much the anti-welker.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:26 AM
Ehhh, a lot of caveats with that. They backed into this year’s title game, included only because two teams ahead of them suffered late-season losses. Name recognition got them in last year over a more deserving OkST team, and the got their first title when a Heisman finalist QB got hurt on in the first quarter.
Is Alabama a good team? Yes. Have they had an extraordinary amount of fortune over the last few years? Yes. Do they have massive built-in advantage in getting to the title game because of the name on their jersey? Yes.
you have to be good AND lucky to win titles, so i’m not sure what you’re getting at.
good teams win the games they’re supposed to.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:26 AM
Someone on twitter had a great comment on this. Said Texas should pay Sherman as a consultant just to pick out OL prospects they should recruit.

Rumors floating around the twitterverse that it is a torn MCL for RGknee
January 7th, 2013 at 9:26 AM
I really like BOB. But I agree with Dan Patrick here — don’t brag about not being a one-and-done guy when you were out taking interviews. You didn’t leave because you weren’t offered a job. As for a raise, OBrien got an automatic four-year extension once the sanctions were handed down. Lets see what he does the next couple of years in tougher circumstances before handing him more money.
Would I blame him if he left? No chance in hell. But if you’re going to stay, then stay. Don’t do this dance every year.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:26 AM
While that’s obviously true, I think Texas has more incentive to “prove something” now (and possibly/probably in the next few years). Plus, despite some of the sentiment about Texas in many parts, the potential for a top 10 matchup is definitely present.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:27 AM
Pegula’s money was probably a “bonus”, not a raise
January 7th, 2013 at 9:27 AM
Why should the NFL be concerned about player safety if the players aren’t concerned about it. I mean the years when the league was allegedly hiding concussion information is different, but these days, fuck these players. It was RGIII’s decision to keep playing and yes I realize Shanny should have overruled him* but if the players are going to continue to trade on the machismo “be a man” and “difference between injured and hurt” mentalities, then fuck them. They get no sympathy for me when they can’t walk without a cane at forty.
*should have overruled him on the fact that he couldn’t fucking throw a football after the second score. Oh that’s great Robert you’re such a leader that you couldn’t stop playing, but your team might still be playing this year if Cousins took over.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:27 AM
Shanahan believed in the magic of RGIII yesterday, and that’s all good, because the magic is what got him there. But it was appearant after the second TD that Griffin had nothing left to give them.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:28 AM
Using your logic they barely beat a 5-loss Big Ten team with no quarterback in their bowl game so cast them out as well
January 7th, 2013 at 9:28 AM
No doubt. But at the same time, we’re allowed to notice and criticize those teams who seem to have a preponderance of it (see Giants, New York).
January 7th, 2013 at 9:28 AM
That’s kinda’ silly. By that metric, Texas is better than aTm based on the game against Ole Miss.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:29 AM
I’m strongly considering dropping mine for the 2012-13 season. I know that there’s a waiting list of thousands to take them from me though. Since the deal is for 8 years, maybe I just keep them and sell more games than I go to. It’s a really difficult decision because of the amount of money that is tied up in them.
There’s going to be 24 home games in this shortened season. That means I get 6. I think I’ll probably go to two games and sell the rest. Watching on TV just makes more sense because the quality of the product is not going to be what we’ve come to expect. Especially this first month of the season.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:29 AM
Oh hell yeah. Wahoo Wah.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:30 AM
PITT was going to be up for that game, no matter their record (4-4 at the time). ND had the task of trying to keep their undefeated record in tact and PITT was making that game their Champ. for the year. I believe PITT and ND have played some really close games recently, so they were familiar with one another.
Having said that, I’m still impressed with ND and their schedule and that they went undefeated. You look at that schedule and they had legitimately 9-10 teams that go to a bowl regularly.
This game is coming down to the last possession, whether one teams scores & wins or one team is stopped short/TO and the game ends on that note. I got a score of Bama 25-18. I wish I could bet this game, but 1), can’t bet against my own team and 2) too many points with 10. If this line ever came down to 7, I’d hit it, but that’s not going to happen.

Nor do I envy the players for averaging 4 games a week over the next 4 months.

OU was a great win. But Navy, MICH, MSU, PITT, USC, WAKE, BYU, Purdue, Stanford and Boston College all have (or had at the time of the game) terrible QBs. I don’t think McCarron is all that special, but you could make the argument that he’s the best QB they’ve seen all year depending on your thoughts on Landry Jones. That’s remarkable.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:35 AM

January 7th, 2013 at 9:36 AM
Stanford and Oklahoma are the only decent wins on NDs schedule, and Stanford has a big ‘ol asterisk next to it. Winning in Norman is always impressive.
I’m more looking at the three-point win over BYU, the three-point win over BYU, the triple-overtime three-point asterisk win over Pitt, and the six-point win over Michigan. Notre Dame has a lot of really close wins over bad teams. I can’t think of another national title game participant with that many struggle games against massively inferior opponents.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:36 AM
No, I haven’t heard a word. I suspect I’ll get something over the next couple of days.
I don’t go to every game as it is. As you know, going to NHL games is pricey.

I worry about the chemistry factor. There have been some Hawks that have been practicing since October with familiar teammates. How long will it take for teams to get used to playing with each other again? There’s only going to be a week of training camp.
Yeah, I think the fitness factor isn’t a big deal. The places we’ll likely see the biggest dropoff is the 3rd and 4th lines. Especially those guys that struggle to find work on a 4th line. Where have they been playing the last 4-5 months? The high quality players found work overseas, the young kids are in Canada or playing in the AHL. Those bottom 3 guys or 3rd pairing guys haven’t been as lucky in terms of staying in the flow of the game.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:38 AM
I do not envy the people that have to put it together.
They’ve had a schedule for both a 48 and 50 game schedule for some time. It’ll be out shortly.
Nor do I envy the players for averaging 4 games a week over the next 4 months.
As of yesterday, the Oilers had 40 games on the original schedule remaining including a full week without games in January. 48 games isn’t going to place that much more of a burden on them.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:39 AM

I woke up and had a tantrum when I found out there was a deal. Then after dropping a Savage elbow drop on my coffee table from the couch, I felt better. Went and grabbed the Hossa sweater out of the closet yesterday and started reading about hockey again. After talking to my old man, I boiled it down to this:
I’m happy that I get to watch hockey again. I’m disappointed that the quality of play won’t be as good. I’m terrified about players getting hurt, especially stars. For example, if Giroux or Toews misses a month of the season now, that’s 25% of the games. I’m extremely angry that I have to pay full price for all of that.

It’s hilarious that a Ravens fan would be so fucking ignorant with hatred that they can’t recognize the fact that a team can be incredible on defense and shut almost every team they play down but struggles on offense so won’t blow people out and inherently then is just the worst team to ever play the sport.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:41 AM
Maybe the NHL will learn what the NBA should’ve learned form that lockout – shorten the season with more games each week. It keeps the product in the publics mind.

Speaking of Evgeni Malkin, second in the KHL in points (comfortably ahead of Ovechkin, who, is he even coming back?) to one of his teammates who he has already propelled to a career year.
Also the Penguins under the new deal are in GREAT cap condition and the first two things they’re doing once the season starts is opening talks with Malkin and Letang on extensions.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:43 AM
The question of quality could go the other way in that you will get a greater sense of urgency with fewer games (cue up some columnist writing that all regular seasons should be shorter).
January 7th, 2013 at 9:44 AM
When I said the 9-10 team that were bowl teams, is that these teams are normally in contention for a bowl bid. While some of the these teams were down this year and the wins were close, there something to be said about winning close games, they don’t get down when they are behind and fight back to win.
I will go record and say that I will not be surprised if Saban goes completely off the reservation tonite with his approach to the offensive gameplan vs ND’s front 7. He did it last year vs LSU in the title game and had McCarron throwing on 1st down to intermediate & deep WRs, while LSU stuck to the same gameplan from Nov. Him winning 2 Championships might allow him to say “ah, fock it, let’s surprise the shit of them.” and come out with something that ND is expecting. We’ll see.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:44 AM
Lotta dumb here. Could take this apart word by word, but the simplest — and most correct — method is to mention that CFB and the NFL are completely different animals. NFL teams don’t have massively inferior opponents because the talent pool is so much more even.

January 7th, 2013 at 9:46 AM

Really hoping someone gives Simmons the business for this in the podcast today…as soon as he bounced that first 3rd down pass and then nearly threw a pick on that second drive it was pretty obvious that unless the Packers turned it over 3 times they’d be alright
Lotta years left in my life theoretically but I can comfortably say I’ll never see a worse QB start a playoff game

January 7th, 2013 at 9:47 AM
He kinda has to.
I haven’t read any of the financial implications of the new deal so I have no idea what to expect from a personnel standpoint. Is there an amnesty? How does this affect the cap going forward?
January 7th, 2013 at 9:47 AM
I expect him to do the same, actually. Soften ND up with quick 8-yard outs before pouding the rock. If Bama opens up running the ball that shows Saban thinks they can push ND around. I’m not sure they can. Also watch out for Barrett Jones getting manhandled at C for Bama. Dude was a great OT, but he has been beaten up by good DT/NTs and ND has one of those.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:48 AM
I agree with the bold, but not when those close wins consistently come against crap teams. A national title participant should never struggle with teams as bad as Purdue, Pitt, BYU and Michigan, IMO.

January 7th, 2013 at 9:50 AM
the tone may have been different, but the sentiment is the same, it’s a gimmick offense centered around an extraordinary QB. The QB became ineffective, and the offense collapsed.
you didn’t have to be wearing headphones to see that Griffin was ineffective after he threw the second TD.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:50 AM
My understanding is two buyouts per team over the next two summers to adjust to the cap.
Paul Martin will obviously be one for the Penguins.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:51 AM
Is there an amnesty? How does this affect the cap going forward?
Each 2 has 2 amnesty buyouts. Buyouts do not count against salary cap, but do come out of % of HRR going to the players (still to be clarified, but huge win for the owners if true).
January 7th, 2013 at 9:51 AM
As soon as I heard Webb had to start, the Vikings were going to have to pull some 2001 Patriots style bullshit out of their ass to even stay competitive. Punt return TD, obscure rules coming into play, the whole bit.
Even TJ Yates was better. Shaun King was better. Rob Johnson was better. Thanks a lot, Joe freaking Webb.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:51 AM
Those are two players on teams with 53-man rosters. AJ Green didn’t get guarded by an 18-year-old two-star freshman CB recruit. The linebacker trying to tackle Peterson wasn’t a 180-pound Mormon sophomore.
College football’s brahmins have a MASSIVE talent advantage over almost everyone they play. An inferior opponent will occasionally give the much better team trouble. But four or five times in a year raises eyebrows.
January 7th, 2013 at 9:53 AM
you didn’t have to be wearing headphones to see that Griffin was ineffective after he threw the second TD.

Why though? Why would someone take that humongous contract when they could wait for the Canucks to amnesty him? Then you can sign him to a much more reasonable deal term wise. It doesn’t make sense to give anything up for him now. At the very least, this should make the return on a potential trade next to nothing.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:00 AM
We’re talking just getting to the game, not winning. That OSU team took 5 years off people in Ohio’s lifespan. Everyone remembers “Holy Buckeye” against Purdue, but that team struggled with UC, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Illinois, PSU and Michigan. Winning the NC helped erase those from peoples memory.

January 7th, 2013 at 10:11 AM
Of the close games? Pitt, Purdue, BYU, Michigan, Michigan State
January 7th, 2013 at 10:11 AM
I still read this as Canadian.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:13 AM
Michigan had a higher rated recruiting class three of the last four years than ND. If you think ND is currently a brahmin based on their current lineup compared to others, you’re high.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:14 AM
I cant decide if Dalton sucks or not. I don’t think that he does, but every time I watch him against a decent defense he can’t do a GD thing.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:14 AM
Also curious as to why you keep saying Michigan State was a close game. The closest they ever got it was 14-3. Notre Dame was never even remotely in jeopardy of losing that game.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:15 AM
Because if CFB has taught us anything, its that recruiting rankings translate to talent.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:15 AM
While it was fun to watch those dominoes fall, I also hated it because tOSU had no business being in the gameagreed…I remember watching that game knowing the outcome before the kickoff. If only Robiskie catches that TD pass before halftime (right before LSU blocked a kick and returned it for a TD). Ending might have been a little different.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:17 AM
As for Bryz being cut…depends on how he plays.
I certainly hope he does. Him and maybe Briere?
Since they can’t use the Amnesty on a guy on LTIR.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:18 AM
mmonast, i think the same glee i had in watching those other teams fall was the same joy i had watching brady quinn tumble in the draft. the fun of watching it unfold was infinitely greater than the outcome.
/ohio…
January 7th, 2013 at 10:19 AM
100% this. I missed who claimed that it was a close game…..
Either way, weird shit happens to teams when you take 30+ days off from playing an actual game. No way the point total reaches 40 tonight.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:20 AM
Please. You guys have nothing on being a Nebraska fan in 2001. I wanted no part of Miami. None. I was hoping NEB would finish third, get a cool BCS game and watch Oregon get smoked by Miami.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:20 AM
Obviously there are exceptions, but there have been numerous studies showing a very high correlation.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:21 AM
I’m leaning this way as well. I wouldn’t be shocked at all if the final score was 17-10.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:22 AM
Yeldon and Lacy will put up 40 themselves, it will be your altar boy robes tattered in a heap of tears and shame.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:22 AM
Feel like this is a perpetually underdiscussed component of the MNC.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:22 AM
Yeah it’s those two star recruits that really carry everything.
It’s changing now, but for the better part of the last decade ND has not been in the same class as USC, Bama, OSU, LSU, Florida, etc in landing big recruits (ie: talented high school players). The only five star players they have are T’eo, Williams, and Tuitt (I’m not counting Gunner Kiel). USC and Alabama have signed over ten five star players each in the timeframe of current rosters. In terms of the current teams assembled, ND does not have as much talent across the board as the rest of the big boys. I just think you’re overstating the gap between them and some of the teams they struggled (well, struggled if you didn’t actually watch the games) to beat.
But where they do have talent, it’s some of the best in the nation.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:23 AM
Exactly. Auburn is the exception that proves the rule.

Queefer, who probably didn’t watch it.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:24 AM
Bama by 68
January 7th, 2013 at 10:25 AM
It’s amazing to me that Te’o would be the third-best LB on UGAs team. So fucking overrated.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:25 AM
Taking the under on most of the major games last week is making my pockets very happy. Although taking the under can be death at times.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:26 AM
Aaron Murray wouldn’t even make ND’s depth chart.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:27 AM
I’d agree with both of these statements. Bama’s depth is what worries me tonight. The Irish have to play a perfect game to win tonight, it’s not a big secret. I’d rather be facing this Bama team than some of the other recent ones they’ve had. They can be beat.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:28 AM
Depth? For all of Bama’s recruiting success, take one shot at Jessie Williams’ knee and Bama will be down to zip at the nose spot.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:29 AM
ND’s secondary is what worries me, as someone said earlier, if they work it early to open up the run game ND is in serious trouble.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:30 AM
The first three are true, but you can’t be serious with the last two. They might have a talent advantage over the Michigan schools, but it wasn’t a big one.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:32 AM
Another sitty national championship game worries me. Off the top of my head, most of them are either blowouts, or close games with the actually field of play being terrible.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:32 AM
that was a very enjoyable tumble until I realized it was setting up perfectly for the Browns to draft him at the end of round 1
/Now I’m Done
January 7th, 2013 at 10:32 AM
This is why I wanted ND so badly as a UGA fan. Murray and the UGA receivers would have eaten them alive. Georgia was not a good match up for Notre Dame.

January 7th, 2013 at 10:33 AM
How nobody, most especially Oklahoma, weren’t able to exploit this is beyond me. They have a converted tailback starting a corner and zero depth.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:33 AM
If there is a weak spot, this is it. But if the Irish hassle McCarron, is he likely to make poor throws? I don’t get to see many Bama games.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:34 AM
Cooper WR for ‘Bama has been progressively getting better as the season goes on, he could be huge for them. Not sure anyone in the Cunts of The Cunt Lake Who Are Massive Cunts secondary has that kind of speed.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:34 AM
On second thought, Bama by 75
January 7th, 2013 at 10:35 AM
ESPN reporting that not only are they going to amputate RGIII leg just above the knee, they are going to do so with civil war surgical instruments and methodology.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:35 AM
Landry Jones is so average.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:35 AM
People seem to be forgetting tht Michigan’s defense lost everybody of note (basically those recruited by Carr) and that the offensive talent talent was fitted for RichRod’s spread. Even with that depleted secondary, ND’s talent was >>> UMs.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:38 AM
i’m going bama tonight for one reason only: notre dame barely beat pitt at home
January 7th, 2013 at 10:41 AM
Just think if the Tide had Kenny Bell in the lineup, too.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:42 AM
No. Not many.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:44 AM
Hard to make poor checkdown throws.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:46 AM
I get a huge kick out of the Bama fans shouting “COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP” when he does something.

what’s with thunderthighs up top? damn
January 7th, 2013 at 10:48 AM
Hockey.
January 7th, 2013 at 10:48 AM
Just no. The defense had a ton of young talent to go with some linemen who had finally started to figure it out. They weren’t the equivalent of ND, but they weren’t hugely outclassed. That same offense from the year before had beaten ND, so we know they weren’t outclassed there. The big drop was along the interior of the offensive line. They couldn’t get a push on almost anyone, but not just ND.
January 7th, 2013 at 11:00 AM
Big, if true.
January 7th, 2013 at 11:03 AM
Also because he’s never dealt with any media scrutiny whatsoever. New Hampshire and Oregon? Try dealing with the Philly media.
this is what i thought would be part of erickson’s downfall when he moved from bumfuck western school to miami. one or two titles later…

Michigan does have a good defense. Can’t argue with that.

Help me out, if Michigan sucks so bad, what does that say about South Carolina?
January 7th, 2013 at 11:23 AM
Ryan Van Bergen And Mike Martin made that D difficult to run on. This year, not so much. Also, this:
The game where Denard started heaving up arm punts that miraculously landed in his WRs hands? I’ll agree that God hated ND last year.
January 7th, 2013 at 11:29 AM
LSU is losing eight players from its defense to the NFL draft. Makes me wonder if a rats-off-the-sinking-ship syndrome is developing.
January 7th, 2013 at 11:32 AM

January 7th, 2013 at 11:44 AM
Bowl games are 25(ish) days after the last regular season game. People judging teams on their bowl games are generally known to be retarded.
January 7th, 2013 at 11:51 AM
Games aren’t an accurate representation of teams despite the superfans being the first to talk about how great a game will be based on the regular season performances of the teams

says the guy who said all mark richt needed to beat nick saban was more talent. please…we both know the answer is clearly “fewer pleats.”
January 7th, 2013 at 12:01 PM
In the unlikely event ND wins I fully expect QS to be in here tomorrow talking about how it shouldn’t count because of how much time off there was and it’s not a true measure of how wretched ND is.
