BBVA Compass Bowl: Pittsburgh vs. Ole Miss
These are two up and coming programs, with teams better than their 6-6 records. We thought this might be a sneaky good bowl game. Hopefully, we were correct.
Pittsburgh: Paul Chryst inherited some disarray. When he accepted the job, he was the program’s fourth head coach in 13 months. He got off to about the worst start imaginable, losing at home to FCS Youngstown State and getting blown out by Cincinnati on a short week. They rebounded solidly. The Panthers’ one-point loss at Syracuse does not look so bad in retrospect. They took Notre Dame to overtime in South Bend. They outscored Rutgers and South Florida 54-9 the final two weeks to reach a bowl game. Chryst did not leave for the Wisconsin job.
Ole Miss: Hugh Freeze enacted one hell of a turnaround. Mississippi lead the country in moral victories, blowing fourth quarter leads against Texas A&M, LSU and Vanderbilt. Their 9-3 record against the spread was second best in the country behind Penn State. The coaching staff has shown equal enthusiasm on the recruiting trail. Still leading for No. 1 overall recruit Robert Nkemdiche, the Rebels will hope for a strong finish.
Sunseri Time: Tino Sunseri finished 18th nationally in passer rating. He threw the fewest interceptions, 2, of any quarterback who started the entire season. He has gone 270 passing attempts without one. His last was on Sept. 15 vs. Virginia Tech.
Prediction: Pitt’s offensive line is a work in progress, and not making much progress. They couldn’t protect Sunseri. They struggled establishing a conventional running game despite two good tailbacks in Ray Graham and Rushel Shell. Ole Miss was one of the better teams at getting to the quarterback and shutting down run games. Pick: Ole Miss [-3] Bowl Record ATS: 18-13-1

January 5th, 2013 at 12:42 PM
ole miss is favored by 3
January 5th, 2013 at 12:44 PM
i got pitt plus 3.5, as advised by the one the only caribou
also, dogs in rutgers and seton hall in hoops

How bout them Terps? VT D is crap but very impressive 1st half.
/fear the Turg
January 5th, 2013 at 1:07 PM
I agree with all those. Think Cincy wins 20-17, and GB crushes 41-20.
January 5th, 2013 at 1:11 PM
I think the Terps win an ACC title before they bolt to the B1G.

And, crazy as it may sound, no F4 in the next 3 years will be disappointing.
January 5th, 2013 at 1:19 PM
Fuck non-BCS bowls after New Year’s Day. Nobody gives a shit.
January 5th, 2013 at 1:19 PM
Took PITT +4. Early pick by Sunseri, not good, but rather him get this out of the way early (sounds crazy right?) then throw it late in the game when it counts badly. Like I said in early bowl games, see if this early momentum for one team, can they sustain thru thru the entire game (see IOWAST, LSU)
The announcers had the kiss of death when they kept talking about it before he threw the INT.

Don’t listen to Duffy and his love for passer rating. Sunseri is terrible, maybe worse than Jordan Rodgers.
January 5th, 2013 at 1:22 PM
Also, didn’t know Ray Graham was out until right before kick-off. Stilled rolled with the pick, would be nice to have him, so we’ll see.

/too soon

I understand your concern WWS. I saw Rodgers play a handful of times this year as well, and they both play “ugly” at times, but sometimes they do just enough to win the game, either win a pass completion (where you go, “fock that was lucky!”) or make a play with their legs.

Dammit Caribou – we’re on opposite sides of this one. I don’t think Pitt’s D can handle the speed/diversity of the Ole Miss attack. Plus all 6 of Ole Miss’ losses are against ranked teams, and the last 2 (against LSU and Vandy) were by a combined 6 points.
/liking both favorites in the NFL this afternoon
January 5th, 2013 at 1:28 PM
They have a starting lineman suspended too – another reason I liked Miss
January 5th, 2013 at 1:31 PM
I’m at work, and have no idea what has happened in the game (or really even if it started) but I’d have a hard time taking Sunseri, whereas I thought Vandy was a great pick in the bowl game. When I’ve seen Pitt, I haven’t thought their supporting cast or coaching was very great, which is opposite Vandy’s. It wouldn’t blow me away if Pitt won, but +3 wouldn’t be near enough to put my money on it.

I have GB tonight, but both dogs covering in the AFC. CIN-HOU is a good test case for momentum and all that, but I think Lewis has done a good job with that team, and am betting with my distrust of Kubiak more than anything.
GB is much more of a pick against Ponder without Harvin, and Peterson dinged up and tired (hopefully) on the road in shitty weather, than it is for GB. Their RB/OL issues will catch up with them, but their secondary isn’t exactly going to be exposed by MIN. IMO, only way Vikes win is if Ponder has 50+ rush yards. Steal some first downs that way.

I saw Uconn beat Pitt in person. Pitt is not good in any way, shape, or form
January 5th, 2013 at 1:39 PM
GB-Minn is the most likely wild card round blowout IMO

Any ‘Bama-ND picks?
Just took Bammer -9.5. I like them to win 30-10. That ND offense is shaky at best
January 5th, 2013 at 2:23 PM
Probably going to wait until tomorrow night to make a decision. Likely leaning toward ALA.
Good answer from Ole Miss after gifting Pitt a TD with a terrible pick and a worse PF penalty.
January 5th, 2013 at 2:55 PM
Was over at my Dad’s house installing an under the cabinet microwave. Watched most of the game over there. PITT has no answer for the uptempo play of Ole Miss right. Lucky the score isnt more than 24-10 right now. PITT has to get back to running the ball effectively and opening up the pass. If they go right for the pass in the 2nd half, the pressure from Ole Miss will beat them all day.
Bama-ND score, I got Bama winning 25-18. I would definitely take ND +10 in this game. Game will be close all game and one team will score with a 4-5 minutes to go and the other team will either come up short or get the final score to win the game. Hopefully that’s Bama. Should be an exciting game, will be disappointed if it’s not.
My family are Bama fans, but my Mom is an ND fan, born and bred (Polish Catholics!). If ND wins I’ll be happy for her. How many times is ND gonna get this shot in the future? Hell it’s been since 1988 since the last.

I believe you made the correct call Roeth
January 5th, 2013 at 3:20 PM
That fat-ass No. 74 for Pitt completely missed a block on Marry from Ole Miss when he pulled. Ran right by him. I mean he didn’t even try. Wow. PITT Off line is a mess. This go into blow-out mode here real quick.
January 5th, 2013 at 3:51 PM
Pitt needs to stop playing in the Compass Bowl. It clearly doesn’t agree with them.
January 5th, 2013 at 4:05 PM
Holy shit, Pitt is terrible.
January 5th, 2013 at 4:08 PM
ms621, that’s good. SMU put a whuppin on them last year. Too many injuries for PITT and they couldn’t handle the uptempo of OLE MISS offense. Maybe Ray Graham would have made a difference, stuck with the running game a little more, plus some better runs than the Frosh who took his place.
Can’t complain about the last week of bets 8-3 ATS. The only game that is left (please don’t talk to me about KENT & ARKST) is the BCS title game and I can’t lay the pts and take BAMA, which sucks. ND +10 has value. The only play that I might take is OVER (40.5), which I think sneaks over by 3-4 pts.
/gotta find me an NFL winner tonite
//puts names in hat, pulls one out
January 5th, 2013 at 4:19 PM
Caribou, Pitt needs a better QB than Sunseri. If they can keep a coaching staff that’s committed to rebuilding then they will be fine.
