Teenager Who Aimed a Laser Pointer at Giants’ Pitcher During Cards Game Pleads Guilty
During an August game against San Francisco, St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny observed a fan attempting to distract Giants pitcher Shane Loux by shining a laser pointer at his eyes.
The fan, Eric Bogard, who was 17 at the time of the incident, recently plead guilty to disturbing the peace at athletic event, the St.Louis Times Dispatch reports. Bogard got off relatively easy, as he was also charged the unregulated use of a laser pointer, a charge which would have resulted in a 30 day prison sentence.
Bogard will serve six months probation, 20 hours of community service and pay the Cardinals $500 in court costs.
In typical lawyer fashion, Bogard’s lawyer painted his client as a scapegoat.
Bogard regrets his behavior and he wasn’t the one who actually did most of the harassing nor disturbing the peace with the laser,” Schwartz said, without naming names. “It was the young man who brought the laser and disposed of it, which was not Bogard.”
If Bogard gets in trouble while on probation, he’s looking at jail time and the charge sticking on his permanent record. [Dispatch]

Wait so the lawyer deflected some of the blame from the person that pays him? No way. Nobody in any other profession would ever do that.

Can’t believe the ACLU isn’t after Missouri for having a law infringing upon one’s right to use a laser pointer. Those boys are getting lazy these days…

In typical intern fashion, Ronny is a grown man who goes by “Ronny”.

Some guy in West Palm Beach was shining one at a small jet landing and a police helicopter and they gave him a light sentence.
When I was working in hockey, one aspect of my job was running the crew of off-ice officials. One dumb kid in the arena kept shining his light in the eyes of a guy on my team. The guy and another goes over to the kid at intermission and grabs him and says “I was in special forces and when somebody shines a light like that on me I go home and get my rifle and deal with it.” Kid got scared and never said anything, amazingly. Turns out the guy was in fact a former special forces guy who was taking lots of pain pills. Had some parachute mishap.

When I was a kid, I thought “disturbing the peace with a laser” in the year 2012 was going to be a lot more exciting than this.

Ronny do just get the hard-hitting assignments?

you

I also love how most of the tbl staff and commenters hate lawyers. Wait until you get in trouble. The system isn’t about guilt or innocence, it’s about the preservation of law and not letting prosecutors trample rights.

Several of the commenters are lawyers, and in fact, one of the staff members is a lawyer.

That’s just Trey they hate

Dopeman, as someone who went through the legal process, i concur. there are many scumbag lawyers out there but most do have your best interest in mind

I would like to disturb Scarlett Johannson’s piece with my laser.

Read somewhere today that Vince Gilligan is still mulling over a Saul Goodman spinoff, and am very excited about that.

Also, there should be a moratorium on dissing Ronny until after he collects his 2012 MVP Award at the TBLys next month.

Old Sun Devil Stadium, opposite endzone of where the call happened.

i need to get a dvd of the game. good si article up now about it. just reactions from the players.

I’m sure it’s compelling but I won’t read it. I’m done with that game. I’ve re-watched it, lamented about it, and argued about it with people everywhere including these comments.
OSU won, got the trophy, Gamble was probably inbounds on that 3rd down, game was officiated horribly both ways, too many turnovers by Miami, and the PI call was horseshit.

article talks alot about guys saying how insane the hitting was, how a lot of guys dont even remember chunks of the game due to the hits.

I’ve told this before, I was at a bar since around 3pm that day. At halftime I decided to buy the bar a round of shots. Then later they lost my tab. Plus the victory. I drank so much aftewwards my side was hurting the next day. Top 5 day ever. Sorry though. Insane game. I always felt bad the Texas-USC title game came so close to it, two of the greatest title games of all time.

Eh, don’t be, I’ll live although at the time I thought it was the biggest tragedy and injustice in the world. Chalk it up to being a dumb college kid. As I was reminded last year and 3 years ago, there will always be shitty sports losses. Truth be told I am more pissed about the 2000 season, not getting to play in the title game than I am 2002. Plus, 2001 was a great year.

No such thing. It’s the St. Louis Post Dispatch.
