Bill O’Brien Claims He’s “Not a One and Done Guy,” Despite Interviewing With The Cleveland Browns
Bill O’Brien inherited a toxic atmosphere and a gutted roster at Penn State. Surprising many, the untested head coach made lemonade, finishing 8-4 and developing woebegone Matt McGloin into a competent college passer. This effort earned him coach of the year buzz and raised his stock dramatically. It piqued interest from NFL teams with vacancies.
O’Brien’s agent clearly let his name dangle in the wind for NFL jobs. He interviewed with and by some accounts “dazzled” the Cleveland Browns. He has decided to stay at Penn State, though, and would have you believe he’s not the type to “cut and run after one year.”
“I’m not a one-and-done guy,” said O’Brien. “I made a commitment to these players at Penn State and that’s what I am going to do.
“I’m a man of my word. I am what I am. Maybe I get fired in six years. But I’m not gonna cut and run after one year, that’s for sure.”
The NFL is always intriguing, especially to former NFL assistants. One would hardly blame O’Brien for being intrigued, since his circumstances at Penn State have altered drastically through no fault of his own.
We could take O’Brien at his word he is “not a one-and-done guy,” just interviewing with an NFL team for shits, giggles and leverage for an enhanced contract. We would suspect, though, that this has much to do with teams being unwilling to pay his $18 million buyout and, as that buyout reduces, this won’t be his last dalliance with “The National Football League.”

nobody wanted to interview the fat man?
January 4th, 2013 at 2:17 PM
I generally like PSU, so I was hoping he’d do the right thing and stay.
That being said, the shit storm that would have ensued if he had left after 1 year would’ve been funny.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:21 PM
Clearly, he has the man boobs for a NFL coach.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:22 PM
At least O’Brien has a really good QB recruit in Hackenberg. Shane Morris blows.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:22 PM
Especially since basically every Penn State player still has the right to transfer.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:23 PM
I was referring more to the media onslaught, but you’re not wrong.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:24 PM
Even if he does, we still get two years of Gardner. By then, Campbell will be on campus.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:24 PM
$18M is a shit ton of scratch to buy him out this year. There was no way a team was doing that.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:25 PM
What is he supposed to say? What should he say when asked if the NFL interests him? Should he lie and say no? Then, when guys like Hoke and Urban are slamming PSU on the recruiting trail with, “oh, he may go pro,” the only way to combat that is to PUBLICLY say he’s at PSU for the long run. it must be nice to be in the media and always be right and know what to do from afar.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:25 PM
Seemed like he was bluffing a little bit to get some more money out of his contract. Smooth move, dimple.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:26 PM
Nah. He’s pretty good, and if the OL class Mich signed pans out, Urban Fuckbag will have some true competition.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:27 PM
If he feared for a backlash on the recruiting trail, he should not have interviewed. No one was paying that buyout. If he didn’t care about that possibility, he played it as well as he could.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:30 PM
You forgot to mention one of the top RB’s in the country getting ready to commit….
January 4th, 2013 at 2:31 PM
Meh. RBs are a dime a dozen, and their bust-to-hit factor is so out of whack I rarely get too excited by them until I see them play.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:31 PM
Well something besides saying he’s “not that type of guy” when all signs indicate he “might have been that type of guy” had the money worked out.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:32 PM
Enjoy him during the NCG telecast.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:32 PM
More importantly he got a pay raise out of that. He might of been able to get that buyout reduced for breach, possibly due to the settlement. He got paid, that’s probably way more important than the impact to his recruiting.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:33 PM
I’m sure he’ll rock some stupid fucking leather jacket that makes him look like a pedophile.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:34 PM
Had the money worked out so says Duffy. For all you know they offered him a job and he turned it down.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:35 PM
This jacket is badass.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:35 PM
He’s calling the game?
January 4th, 2013 at 2:36 PM
Letterman jackets are for washed up HS stars who beat off to infomercials.

I like BOB even more after this. Successful people have options, smart ones keep those options open.
It wasn’t about this year and certainly not about the Browns. Considering he was a complete nobody until about 13 months ago it would be invaluable to see the process, learn the questions he’ll need to someday answer, and take techniques to his own coaching searches.
Not to mention get his rolodex filled up, guy broke down film in NE for a couple years. He had more contacts in college than the NFL.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:38 PM
He’ll be on the halftime/pregame show I would imagine.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:38 PM
Bitter much?
January 4th, 2013 at 2:38 PM
If it’s 1996 and he’s 16 years old.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:39 PM
black leather jacket jokes just aren’t the same unless boob chizic is involved.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:39 PM
Not at all. As a HS kid I loved them. Then I grew up.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:40 PM
I’m gonna miss him. Malzahn might actually be consistently solid with AUB.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:41 PM
And a special shout out to oil and natural gas tycoon and Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula for opening his alumni checkbook and making OBrien’s decision a little easier. Solid effort from a dude whose net worth starts with B.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:45 PM
I think my mom still has all of ours in a closet at her house. she keeps asking if we want it, and we all keep saying no.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:46 PM
Good god man.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:48 PM
I mean considering your dead horse angles wouldn’t the angle of “college coach exploits millions from slave market” been a better post than this?
January 4th, 2013 at 2:48 PM
Just realized I’m going to Vegas during all the porn conventions.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:49 PM
Going to visit your sister’s booth?
January 4th, 2013 at 2:49 PM
Letterman jackets are for washed up HS stars who beat off to infomercials.
or for HS stars that just beat off, because it is enjoyable.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:50 PM
Also, I’m gonna miss y’alls boob chizik jokes.
Go ahead and start preparing your Malzahn tugs at his pants all game jokes though.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:50 PM
Sister jokes are so 5th grade.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:51 PM
Or sophomore year at Auburn.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:52 PM
watching penn state fans on tmb lose their shit over him interviewing was priceless.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:52 PM
I’m going to miss you calling him a good coach.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:55 PM
Kind of like how Richt misses playing Hawaii in a BCS Bowl?
January 4th, 2013 at 2:57 PM
I’m leaving Vegas the night it starts.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:57 PM
Not at all. That team and coach (UGA) were legit. Chizik is the biggest fraud of all time. Larry Coker thinks Chizik was fraudy, and everyone outside of AUB knew it. That was the best part. It wasn’t like it was split evenly or anything. It was 99% saying he was a clown and then AUB fans buying signed copies of “All In.”
January 4th, 2013 at 2:58 PM
No football tonight? Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!
January 4th, 2013 at 2:58 PM
We’re doing the highly traditional Sat-Tues Vegas “weekend.”
January 4th, 2013 at 2:59 PM
he did just finish his one year apprenticeship at Arkansas State, learning under the master, John Brady.
January 4th, 2013 at 2:59 PM
Cotton Bowl. 8:00 on Fox. Should be a great game.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:00 PM
Cotton Bowl. don’t worry, I would just assume forget about those two wretched schools as well.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:00 PM
oh..right….I always enjoy watching a Bob Stoops team choke. go Johnny Football!
January 4th, 2013 at 3:00 PM
He won a national title. Of course they’re going to buy a book. Looking back, I think Chizik was a 8-9 win type coach. Cam took him over the edge and then ZERO QB play, coaching turnover, and failed development took him down to 3 wins. Nobody doubted him when he was a DC so it’s really hard calling him a fraud.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:01 PM
I’m going Monday – Thursday night for work. It’s kind of nice not having the casino bars crammed with people.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:02 PM
Can we make fun of Aggies again?
They’re having a game watching party at one of the country clubs here tonight and some of my Tech friends were invited…and are going. There is a 100% chance those dumb Aggies do the “SEC” chant if they win…to themselves.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:03 PM
Yeah. That was my thought, though the Sunday we’re there is the AFC/NFC Champ games. We’ll be at Lagasse’s for that. But I’m saving my hardcore day for Monday when the place clears out.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:03 PM
Not really. As a Head Coach he was fraudtastic. Perhaps he fall under the Norv Turner banner of coaches who should never be higher than OC/DCs. Nothing wrong with that. Hell, he can recruit like mad, so I’d be thrilled if NEB hired him. I just wouldn’t want him anywhere near the head job.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:04 PM
Delmonico is one of his steakhouses out there (in the Venetian). Great place.

January 4th, 2013 at 3:04 PM
Glad O’Brien decided to stay. After the bullshit laid down by the NCAA, I wouldn’t have blamed him in the slightest if he left, but I’m happy he’ll be back. He’s exactly the type of coach they need right now.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:04 PM
when is that? really hoping I don’t bump into anyone carrying armloads of souvenirs when i’m there the first week of Feb.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:06 PM
I can agree with this.
Yeah I’m probably going to have multiple steaks while I’m there. Been looking at some old school (ish) places – Golden Steer. THE Steakhouse (which is in shitty Circus Circus but comes highly recommended).
January 4th, 2013 at 3:07 PM
2 weeks. I think the convention is the 17th-19th. We get there the 19th.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:07 PM
Oh sorry sir, I didn’t mean to knock over your huge bag of dildos
January 4th, 2013 at 3:08 PM
I am glad I’m not going anywhere to watch the game tonight, because if I ran into some Aggie fans there is no telling what I would say to them. there were a few KSU fans at the place I was at last night, and besides clearly being from Kansas, I didn’t see much wrong with them so I didn’t give them a hard time. aTm fans though, I just don’t think I would be able to hold back.
I can’t believe that over the next 4 days I will be cheering for OU and ND. fuck me.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:09 PM
That is the one thing that sucks about Vegas in January during the weekdays. 9:00 at night, and you’re stuck watching Trailblazer, Suns, and UC Santa Barbara games.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:10 PM
Gauchos bro!
/Jim Rome’d
January 4th, 2013 at 3:12 PM
Delmonico is legit, but there are so many places out there. They’re all just so fucking expensive. There is a great deli in New York New York (Goldbergs I think). Vinnie’s Deluxe is a magical sandwich.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:12 PM
Fuck that. 9:00 at night you’re at dinner followed by blackjack and booze.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:14 PM
he’s a fraud of a head coach. he turned Auburn, and all their resources into Iowa State. Ya know, the place he sucked at before they hired him to be their HC?
January 4th, 2013 at 3:14 PM
and yes, I am going to ignore the national title that was won by Cam Newton.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:16 PM
I’m mostly sad about having to come up with a good nickname for Gus. Derp Derp Chizik, Boob Chizik and the Chizwagon (not my creation) were just so much fun to say.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:16 PM
and Gus Malzahn
January 4th, 2013 at 3:16 PM
As should we all.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:16 PM
Believe it or not, but I rarely gamble. I like sitting in Mandalay’s sports book drinking and watching games.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:17 PM
Gus didn’t do shit the year after Cam and did okay the year before Cam. Let’s wait to anoint him just yet.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:18 PM
afc/nfc title game day is one of the best days to be in vegas. definitely better than super bowl. super bowl brings the posers into town by the fuckload. title game day is the last for football fans there.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:18 PM
I don’t have the money to gamble as much as I would like to. That’s why when I do go to Vegas it’s during the NCAA tourney. That way there are games to keep me occupied.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:20 PM
The next time I go to Vegas I want to go in Sept or Oct and get a full Sat/Sun in with games.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:20 PM
I’m thinking at least one of those nice steak dinners will be picked up by somebody else in the group, which is why I’m planning on making multiple trips.
Anybody else got any Vegas tips? It’s a bachelor party.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:20 PM
I’ll play craps one night. Usually will burn thru $100 – $200. After that I’m done. I’m just too cheap.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:21 PM
That is when I go. First weekend of the tournament
January 4th, 2013 at 3:21 PM
I’m hoping Tarantino reads this comment, the lightbulb goes off and his next movie is set in the world of CFB.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:22 PM
I hate clubs, but if that’s your thing Cosmopolitan hotel is supposedly nice. To be honest, I’ve never been when there wasn’t a big sporting event going on, so I don’t know what the hell people do if they aren’t betting or yelling at the tv due to betting.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:22 PM
Hang out at any bar in MGM Grand and play Spot The Hooker.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:22 PM
We’re doing Lagasse’s Stadium for the first game. $100 minimum per person which we’re gonna blow through by the end of the first half. Then I want to go find a tamer book to watch the second game of the day.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:22 PM
If you work the Filipino guys on the corners, you can get enough of the hooker cards to make a full deck.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:24 PM
I like to take about $500 in cash for blackjack. I want to play craps as it seems so much fun, but I just don’t know how to play it. Blackjack is my jam, though.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:24 PM
I f’ing hate clubs unless you’re talking about peelers. We’ll be in a couple of those for sure. I want to find some good craps tables and we’ll be on the lookout for the most ridiculous slot machines. Group I’m going with, that’s our favorite game – find a high roller slot machine, each put $100 in, and attack the shit out of it.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:25 PM
We played “hooker or no hooker.” That was fun, but nothing topped when we started betting on ages of women at the bar. We’d set the over/under and then ask them for ID. They ate it up.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:26 PM
I used to play a lot of cards.
/all i got
January 4th, 2013 at 3:27 PM
I love Mandalay Bay…I just hate that it’s on the ass end of the strip. The Wynn is also nice, but Aria is pretty fucking sweet. That’s a nice joint.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:28 PM
Yeah, some of the guys going always stay at the Wynn. Two of them have done very, very, very well there, but I don’t like playing $25 minimums where winning a grand gets you a wanking motion.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:29 PM
Make your pass line bet. If a point number is rolled, back up your pass line bet with whatever the maximum is they’ll allow. Ignore all the other shit that’s on the table.
On the flipside, I don’t play blackjack because I’m afraid I’ll fuck someone’s hand up by hitting or splitting when I shouldn’t
January 4th, 2013 at 3:29 PM
LSU will reload as they always do on defense, but they are going to lose 5 juniors to the draft. Reid (S), Minter (LB), Simon (DB), Mingo (DE) and Montgomery(DE) are all leaving.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:29 PM
Wait, I thought that was the best part of the game?
January 4th, 2013 at 3:30 PM
That’s what I play. It’s a good thing I don’t have more money because I would gamble my ass off. That shit is a total rush for me.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:31 PM
Wheel of Fortune slots at the highest dollar value per pull you can find. Best slot machine in town.
Also tell your waitress at the strip club that you only want Asian dancers.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:31 PM
I’m not scared of it but I can’t ever walk away when I’m up so it’s never been that good to me.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:33 PM
Last time I was in New Orleans we found a Wheel of Fortune machine and won $4000 on our 4th pull. Hilarious. And a buddy of mine is down with the Asians. That was going to happen anyway.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:33 PM
It takes me losing a lot of my winnings before I’ll walk away, but I always end the trip playing $100 a hand for as long as I can. For many that’s probably chump change, but for me it’s an intense hand.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:34 PM
I’m out there for a conference/trade show that’s in Mandalay’s convention center. There’s a shit ton of bars restaurants there. If I get bored, I’ll get on the tram that runs to Excalibur, and hop across the street to NYNY or MGM.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:35 PM
Same here, though I usually save my bigger exposure for the craps table.
January 4th, 2013 at 3:37 PM
Dumb question: Does the hold percentage vary by slot machine or is it standard across the board? Does it vary by casino?
January 4th, 2013 at 3:51 PM
Guess I’ve never really paid attention to that.
