Texas Hired Larry Porter, Who Dealt With Willie Lyles While An LSU Assistant
Texas A&M is surging in the SEC. The Big 12 is the country’s most competitive conference. Oklahoma has owned the Red River Rivalry. Palpable incongruity in the coaching staff. These are desperate times for Mack Brown at Texas, which may explain why he hired former Memphis head coach Larry Porter as running backs coach to anchor their recruiting.
Porter is an interesting hire for Texas from an NCAA perspective. The Longhorns came under scrutiny for some past involvement with Willie Lyles. Porter was the contact for Lyles at LSU until he took the Memphis job in 2009. Porter told FOX Sports Lyles was a “genuine” guy in 2011.
“I don’t know the conversations he’s having with these kids when we’re not around,” Porter said. “We’re not around him much. Who knows where the influences are coming at the end of the day?”
“I think the kids listen to him. I do. Some kids he’s probably closer to than others. Some kids know that he goes around to a lot of different universities so some of them like to jump in the car with him. What goes on and what’s being said, again, I have no clue.”
The broader question is why coaches having agents fomenting intrigue and engaging in backroom dealing is embraced, but players having an illicit representative advise them (since they are forbidden from having a formal one) is a pernicious danger the NCAA must eradicate.
Schools taking a six or seven-figure bath to subsidize corruption and bowl director salaries is a cherished part of the system, but we must crack down on these modest “scouting service” payments!

Now, this is the Ty Duffy I used to know.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:38 PM
I read this paragraph and the only thing I could think about was this during the Cap One bowl and how much I loved it. Viva college football.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:40 PM
Oregon is going to promote its OC should Kelly in fact head to the NFL.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:41 PM
They’re “non-profit” and the fucktons of money have to go somewhere.
Would love, love to know again how UT spends $23 million on “game day preparations” when the next highest school spends $7 million?
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:42 PM
So who listens to Firewall and Iceberg podcast? Jesus, Feinberg is so fucking rude. Sepinwall has saintly amount of patience.

Viva college football.
Amen.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:43 PM
No one wants to know how the sausage is made
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:43 PM
Not sure, but they aren’t spending it wisely as of late.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:44 PM
I’ve never noticed that, he does need to stop sucking his teeth while thinking though…worst sound on a podcast this side of Mike Lombardi’s fat man breathing

Bevo puts out, but it ain’t free…

The Jack Klugman is baffling. First, a week late, but also no comments.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:45 PM
Not so much that as I simply don’t care that kids who are getting schollies aren’t paid on top of that. I get why some people object to that, but when those very same people hire unpaid interns, I care even less.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:46 PM

I hurt feinberg’s feelings on twitter last night. I’m not even sure what we were arguing about, but I know he thinks Jack Morris is a Hall of Famer. Don’t tweet drunk gentleman and cracker jack, don’t tweet drunk.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:47 PM
I do know that he uses his condescending voice when discussing sports, whch he knows nothing about, which ruins my ability to take him seriously when he uses it when discussing something important, like Smash.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:47 PM
Isn’t Oregon not agreeing to do that what kept Kelly from jumping to the Bucs last year?
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:49 PM
Isn’t that their shtick? I thought that was their shtick.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:49 PM
Isn’t Oregon not agreeing to do that what kept Kelly from jumping to the Bucs last year?
no, it was the pirate ship
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:51 PM
I think I read that somewhere, but I had not heard if it was true or not.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:51 PM
He is so fucking condescending. And disagrees for disagreements sake. Sepinwall could be like “show x is bad” and Fienberg chimes in with “I disagree. Show x is not good, but it’s not bad”.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:53 PM
Jesus, that’s really going to happen, isn’t it?
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:54 PM
I would take Jack Morris and day of the week over Bert Blyleven

Arguing with NEB fans while signed in through a UGA fan’s account on rivals in fucking priceless. That’s been my time wasting venture this past week, and it’s been amazing.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:57 PM
smart move. that Bucs job is awful.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:57 PM
I do not care that polo players are not getting paid because no one is profiting and therefore there is no exploitation. But when NCAA has a pays a staff of around 400 $50 million annually or Kentucky spends $167,000 per player, per game in money that players do not see I get very, very confused at how such a thing can exist.
/Pay your fucking interns TBL you hypocrite
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:57 PM
but I know he thinks Jack Morris is a Hall of Famer
Jesus, that’s really going to happen, isn’t it?
I don’t think until next year.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:58 PM
Saw this on a UGA message board and laughed.
Manti Te’o: 103 tackles, 5.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks. 7 INTs, 1 FR/1 FF.
Alex Ogletree: (missed 4 games) 111 tackles, 9.5 TFL, 3.0 sacks, 1 INT 1 TD, 1 FR/1FF
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:58 PM
I’ve only listened to it a couple times, mostly because Feinberg is so unbearable.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:58 PM
If we’re talking for Game 7 of the 1991 World Series, sure…otherwise, no
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:59 PM
Peace Chipples. Come on down Dontre Wilson.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:59 PM
I would think Kelly would need a dude with some legs to run his show. Not a running QB, but someone who could roll out and shit. Couldn’t Freeman have done that? God knows Weeden can’t.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:59 PM
Alex = Alec
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:02 PM
I’ve only listened to it a couple times, mostly because Feinberg is so unbearable.
I felt this way initially, but I’ve grown fond of him when we’re not talking on the internet. He’s quite the libbity liberal.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:03 PM
No NFL experience. Risky move by whoever hires him
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:04 PM
Better than Detroit’s
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:06 PM
Agreed, no one would want to work with Martin Mayhew. The never to be seen GM that only has cloak and dagger pressers with a couple media members. No recordings allowed. Oh and he talks about adding more weapons for Matt Stafford.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:06 PM
Every move is risky, though. Might as well go outside of the box a bit and see what happens. Not like CLE or BUF has done well going the “safe” route.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:07 PM
Does he mean OL, because they shouldn’t draft an offensive player unless he plays OL.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:07 PM

I find it interesting how many teams seem interested in Lovie.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:07 PM
No, he means more play making WR’s and RB’s.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:08 PM
SROD’s take on this Porter move is sorely needed.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:09 PM
EXACTLY!! No one retreads like the NFL.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:09 PM
To an extent. I’m higher on a few college coaches than Chip though
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:10 PM
Yet you stayed away from TBL during CFB season?
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:10 PM
Hilarious.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:11 PM
I see those two weeks on the wagon in Thunder Bay really doused your fire.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:11 PM
David Shaw? I’m intrigued big time re: Kelly and the NFL. I couldn’t care less about BUF or CLE, but if he lands at either spot I’ll catch as many of those games as I can.

Lovie’s a good coach, just needs a GM better suited to build an offense and a good coordinator to do something with it…the Bears never provided either
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:15 PM
I think Saban’s ready for round two, like Brian Kelly despite lack of experience. Shaw’s good, I’m surprised Peterson gets no buzz, and the Syracuse coach seems good although I haven’t seen them play a ton
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:16 PM
Why does Oscar Madison rate a post but not Charles Durning. He played the weasely coach in North Dallas Forty who sparked the awesome “When we call it a game, you call it a business” riff.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:17 PM
Is this against NCAA rules? Players can get advice on whatever they want from anyone, provided there’s no quid pro quo or agency relationship and the athlete doesn’t lie about it if asked. Fromt he NCAA’s website:
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:17 PM
In the NFL you have to play more than one good team a season, not sure he’s ready for that level of culture shock
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:17 PM
Lovie didn’t have the latitude to hire his coordinators?
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:18 PM
David Shaw won’t leave Stanford, that’s his dream job. He also just negotiated a contract extension on his own to stick around.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:20 PM
Probably, he wasn’t drafting bust after bust on the offensive line though…it’s silly to think a guy who accomplished what he did only having talent on one side of the ball shouldn’t get another shot in the league
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:20 PM
I think he will be ready soon, but not this year from what most are now saying. If he was ready for round 2 now he’d leave after the title game.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:21 PM
Maybe so, but if Pat Haden doesn’t pursue him after next year, I’ll be sending a steaming pile of shit to his doorstep
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:22 PM
Yeah, that…but I was referring to the comments being off, etc. It looks like a sponsored post. Who paid for THAT?
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:22 PM
Why leave Boise and deal with recruiting sanctions for a year? USC is stuck with Kiffin until the three years of 15 signees is up.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:24 PM
For the opportunity to build a dynasty. It’s the best job in college football after the sanctions
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:26 PM
That was a point of overemphasis for Herbie and Brent during the Rose Bowl Game Presented By Visqueen.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:26 PM
15 a year is what they’re allowed? They’ve got 14 this year. I guess they’re holding a spot for A’Shawn Robinson. Hope they fill it with someone else…
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:27 PM
USC is in Austin these days?
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:27 PM
Hey, something’s gotta churn those non-bucks that MVP Ronny and FSU Girl are getting.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:29 PM
If aTm spanks Oklahoma in the Cotton, I’d love to see UT push Mack aside and break the bank in trying to lure Sumlin. One, football would be fun again in Austin, and two, every preening Aggie in my vicinity would keel over from a massive coronary.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:31 PM
If Texas offers Sumlin, how does he possibly turn that down? Unless you are at USC, UF or Bama I don’t think you can turn Texas down.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:32 PM
That would be glorious.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:33 PM
You can if you’re at Ohio St, LSU, FSU or Oklahoma
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:34 PM
If I’m Texas I’d still have Petersen ahead of Sumlin, but if Sumlin keeps recruiting like he is (not sure why he wouldn’t) he would be enticing.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:34 PM
I actually like Sumlin as a potential NFL coach too
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:35 PM
Ohio State and OU I agree with. Not LSU or FSU. I think UGA is a top-7 job in the country, but if Texas offered Richt the gig, I’m not sure he could turn that down.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:35 PM
Michigan, ND?
Texas may be a “better job” than some (most? all?) of them, but it’s pretty tough to leave a monster program, even for another one.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:37 PM
Agree that it would be tough, but I think Texas truly is that much better in terms of location, recruiting, competition and all of that. I can see where others would have a valid disagreement.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:40 PM
Houston was #2 in yards per play last year. (previous years: #18, #5, #2) This year they’re 50th. Ags went from 28 to 6th.
Yeah, I’d take Sumlin.
I know, Keenum, JFF, Kingsbury, blah, blah, blah. I’d take my chances.

January 3rd, 2013 at 4:44 PM
No way.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:46 PM
I don’t think OU is a better job than Texas, despite their success.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:47 PM
Neither do I. Does anyone?
I’m not saying it’s a top 7 job, I’m just saying there aren’t 7 other jobs I’d take over it.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:47 PM
OU and FSU too high
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:47 PM
The success of some schools relative to others defies logic. They just always seem to hire the right coaches. ‘Bama and OU come to mind
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:48 PM
Also, what’s the diffrence between aTm wank and hook’em wank
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:49 PM
10 years ago you better fucking believe Tennessee was a better gig than Southern Cal. now? not close. my criteria is basically looking at a program right now and opening the head coaching spot. what’s the criteria to measure pros and cons (in no particular order)?
fan support/home field advantage/stadium
athletic department support
in state recruiting opportunities
regional recruiting opportunities
national recruiting opportunities
depth on team returning for next season
upcoming recruiting class committments
ability to win in upcoming season
(some others I’m forgetting right now)
10 years ago, Tennessee beats out Southern Cal in basically every one of these categories. the program erosion has killed everything but the fanbase/stadium.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:50 PM
Putting on my politically incorrect (racist?) hat: if you look at racial demographics and number of D1A programs in the state, Georgia may be the most underachieving program in the country.
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:50 PM
I think hook’em wank is just as annoying, especially when Garrett Gilbert was winning those two Heisman’s
January 3rd, 2013 at 4:52 PM

Not like Clemson, SC, Florida, Florida State, Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee and GT are super close to the players within the state. Oh, you mean it’s a 30 min drive from Valdosta to FSU and a 3.5 hr drive to Athens? That’s not an excuse at all I guess.
January 3rd, 2013 at 5:05 PM
Oh, you mean it’s a 30 min drive from Valdosta to FSU and a 3.5 hr drive to Athens?
I’m not sure what you’re trying to say. I just know it takes way longer than 30 minutes to get from Tallahassee to Valdosta.
January 3rd, 2013 at 5:06 PM
The success of some schools relative to others defies logic. They just always seem to hire the right coaches. ‘Bama and OU come to mind
Haha, what? Bama defies logic?

Quite the gap between Stallings and Saban. Lesson to be learned? Never hire a coach with the first name “Mike”.

January 3rd, 2013 at 5:13 PM
Isn’t CJ still on the wagon?
January 3rd, 2013 at 5:14 PM
LSU is an interesting case. I think they’d be the program most affected by a resurgent A&M. The state of Texas gets closed off, and there’s not enough talent in Louisiana to sustain LSU at the level it’s at.
January 3rd, 2013 at 5:15 PM
Based on in-state talent, yes.
Fascinating. And not based on much of anything. Alabama puts out a pretty good amount of players. So do NW Florida and Mississippi, both of which are in ‘Bama’s sweet spot.

Not as many players as a handful of states. They’ve been able to steal players from Fla, Miss, Ga, Tenn. Why? Because they’ve hired the right coaches. The guys listed by Mullet weren’t exactly raiding the south

OU and ‘Bama, along with OSU and USC, have been the winningest programs of the past 50 years. They’ve done pretty well in the coaching department
January 3rd, 2013 at 5:20 PM
Because they couldn’t. They sucked, and Tennesse was relevant. Also, they sucked.
January 3rd, 2013 at 5:26 PM
Yeah they have but they also don’t “always seem to hire the right guys”. OU and Bama have had misses and gone through down periods just like everyone else. They do have the cache to get back though. I keep expecting Tennessee and Nebraska to do it. We’ll see.
January 3rd, 2013 at 5:30 PM
gfunk- allow me to re-word it. OU and ‘Bama have tended to make excellent coaching hires at a disproportionately high rate. This has led to both schools winning more than their in-state talent would predict
January 3rd, 2013 at 5:30 PM
They’ve been able to steal players from Fla, Miss, Ga, Tenn.
‘Bama ain’t “stealing” players from MS. That state gets divided between LSU, Bama, and Auburn. The leftovers stay in state.
January 3rd, 2013 at 5:51 PM
eh. I guess if the emphasis is on “excellent”. Since 1947 (Bud Wilkinson arrives), OU has had 9 coaches. Three have winning percentages over .800. Three are at .500 or below. And the other three are in between.
Of the last 12 Bama coaches, 5 have winning percentages over .800. Only 2 are below .500 though.
Compare that to Tennessee and Texas for example who have none over .800 in that time, or LSU which has 1 (Miles, who might drop below). I think it’s just OU and Bama have had a number of great coaches who have stayed a long time, but when they actually have to hire coaches I don’t think they really hit at a disproportionate rate (maybe Bama does, but not OU).
Also, of course, this is all an exercise in cherry-picking. The other thing is I don’t really disagree with your premise that OU and Alabama have been more successful in football than you might think if you just consider what you’d think is the talent base.
January 3rd, 2013 at 5:55 PM
OU and Alabama have been more successful in football than you might think if you just consider what you’d think is the talent base.
The idea just kills me. Especially from a USC fan. Being next door to Texas and Florida, respectively, does not make for shallow recruiting grounds
January 3rd, 2013 at 6:03 PM
I’ll take the bait. Go on…?
