Colorado Got Screwed by the Referees at the Buzzer, and Arizona Won in Overtime
Sabatino Chen banked in this 3-pointer at the buzzer, and Colorado stunned No. 3 Arizona in the desert, 83-80. Except … referees looked at replays and decided the ball was not out of his hands in time, and waved off the basket. That’s funny, because nobody – Arizona fans, casual fans, people who switched over to the game with the Fiesta Bowl at halftime – who saw the shot and the replays agree with the call.
The ball is just beyond the tips of Chen’s fingers when the backboard lights up and the clock hits 00.0. Colorado got shafted.
Naturally, the Buffaloes lost in overtime, 92-83. Arizona is still unbeaten. Mark Lyons, the Xavier transfer, scored 24 points for the Wildcats. Here’s a close-up GIF via the Bloody Owl of Chen’s hands:

Wow. Total homer job. Another good reaso to root against the wildcats and bet against the.m as well. Just Ilike I did in the Hawaiian classic vs SDSU.

Also: embarrassing

The refs definitely got influenced by the fans. The fans went ballistic in the arena like it wa sno good when they saw the jumbotron. Worst call of the season. At best it is inconclusive.

If you freeze it at the :33 mark, while the ball is still on his fingertips, there is clearly something wrong with the TV clock. The clock above the backboard shows 0:00, while the clock on the bottom right on the screen has 0.00.1. Depending on which clock is official, the refs may have got this correct.

Caribou – saw you’re on ORE -8.5 – I’m with you.
/we’ve been pretty good when we’ve agreed on these.

My 2 half bet on Arizona thinks it was a great call. My non betting self thinks the Buffs got hosed.

Roeth, look at the GIF. When the backboard clock goes 0 and the backboard lights up, the ball is out of his hands.

Take a look at the video – the clock on the side of the backboard doesn’t match what’s on the front. They’re not uniform.

You can literally freeze the video and have the clocks on top of the backboard have different times on it.

But I’m ignoring the clock on the side, I’m just looking at the backboard clock and buzzer light, aren’t those the determining factors?

Not sure – when there are multiple clocks in an arena one is typically declared the official clock. It would depend on the “house” rules. My guess is the PAC 12 director of officiating will be issuing an explanation tomorrow.

Yeah, we’ve been in sync, got lucky to, when the game went off, bovada moved it to ORE -8. I didn’t like that .5 pt hanging out there, especially after that 2pt conversion after the 1st TD.
Love TXAM tomorrow nite. Line is TXAM -3.5, would like it to get to -3.

No such thing as “house rules.” The NCAA standard is that it is the light around the backboard and the clock on the top that is the determining factor. If those are out of sync then it is the light only. The game clock on ESPN3 had him releasing it with .2 left so that was way off.
The only way they can say it is no good is that they called it no good on the floor so they couldn’t overturn, but I’m almost positive they counted it on the floor so that would be a lie.

You’re wrong – from NCAA rulebook

But you forgot the part before that that says if the clocks aren’t synched then you use the lights. As they obviously weren’t on this case. The official game clock is always synched to the lights on the backboard. Otherwise it makes no sense.
