Andy Reid “On the Verge” of Becoming Next Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach, According to Report
Andy Reid spent almost nine hours yesterday with members of the Kansas City Chiefs, including owner Clark Hunt and GM Scott Pioli. He is now on the verge of becoming Kansas City’s next head coach, according to Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter. Of course, just a few days ago, Adam Schefter said Arizona was the place. Ahh, the coaching rumor season to drive negotiation.
One league source said he was “95 percent” certain former Eagles HC Andy Reid will wind up coaching the Cardinals.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 1, 2013
Kansas City may not to be the worst job after all, what with cap space, the first overall pick, and some pieces in place. It remains to be seen what will happen to Scott Pioli, and if this move also precipitates a change there, to bring in Tom Heckert to work with Reid, all the better. If it becomes official, Reid will be tasked with doing what he has been pretty good at in Philadelphia, and what has long been lacking in Kansas City–developing quarterbacks.

45 hours and Reid goes from Arizona (95%) to KC. Hmmmm. Fluid?
Reid gets 2 wins over Oakland, and at least one over SD, so he’s starting with 3 wins. He has a top 5 RB. No QB, but nice WR, some talent on defense (esp Berry). No. 1 pick.
As long as Pioli stays out of the way ….
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:54 AM
If Reid gets hired, then Pioli is definitely out. The only way the Chiefs can keep him from not interviewing in AZ or SD is by offering personnel control. This would be a really good hire for the Chiefs.
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:55 AM
Kansas City is inundated with expensive rookie contracts and are therefore proper fucked.
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:55 AM
The BBQ restaurants in the KC metro area are currently throwing parades.
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:55 AM
I’ll say it, Gates BBQ is the most overrated BBQ place in town.
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:56 AM
As long as Pioli stays out of the way ….
Pioli had all his power taken away. He won’t be an issue. At most, he’ll be an expensive quality control tattle tale for the housekeeping department.
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:57 AM
I don’t think it quite works that way.
Andy Reid’s gonna develop him some Brady Quinn, oh yeah.
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:57 AM
Dammit, I was already beaten to the BBQ joke
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:57 AM
Oklahoma Joe’s or GTFO.
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:58 AM
It’s my opinion that an organization is better off keeping Andy without full personnel control. Dude will help you pick a QB. And develop him as well or better than anyone else. But you need someone else in charge of amateur and pro player evaluation.
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:58 AM
If Reid is their coach, Geno Smith has to be headed to Kansas City, right?
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:58 AM

arizona couldn’t convince him not to stop there first. It’s like with Buffalo and Mario Williams. If they won’t let him leave town, he can’t go anywhere else.
Reid can easily get Pioli fired, and assemble a coaching staff out of his own also fired guys. And pick the players. And nobody will even care if he can’t get them over the top, because nobody can.
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:59 AM
It was a total layup.
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:59 AM
If Reid is their coach, Geno Smith has to be headed to Kansas City, right?
yeah, that’s what I think. Unless he doesn’t have a wide enough 9, if you catch my meaning.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:00 AM
some talent on defense (esp Berry).
spoken like a man who doesn’t watch a lot of chiefs games, but watches a lot of games where his own team fields lousy safeties.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:02 AM
Oklahoma Joe’s or GTFO.
Indeed. The brisket… so, damn good.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:02 AM
The cupboard’s not bare at KC by any means, but that team didn’t lose 14 games solely because Romeo Crennel was too comfortable on his ice floe to go for it on 4th and 1.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:03 AM
$33 million in cap tied up with Tyson Jackson, Cassel and Tamba Hali.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:04 AM
I don’t think it quite works that way.
Yeah, especially since the Raiders whooped them twice this year.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:05 AM
Poor Jamaal Charles
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:05 AM
It’s not as bad as all that. Tyson Jackson has like $14 mil coming, but his contract only had $4 mil guaranteed, pretty sure they could cut him and save if they wanted (but he played better down the stretch so maybe not). Dorsey’s contract is up. Guys like Berry, Tamba, DJ, and Flowers have pretty big numbers but are pretty much market rate considering their production.
Biggest issue: Jamaal Charles is going to be making $1.75 mil next year, $2.25m in ’14, and $4.75m in ’15. Is he going to push for a new contract?
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:06 AM
It’s looking like there might be a new deal in the NHL. 2 Buy-outs!
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:06 AM
Poor Jamaal Charles
And Derrick Johnson. Two of the best at their positions and their prime has been wasted so far. Johnson never gives up even when the entire offense gives up after missed field goals in the first halves of games. He has pride. After a slow start to his career, he is fucking awesome. And I don’t even like the Chiefs. I just have to watch them every Sunday.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:08 AM
Eric Berry was a shell this year, and he was sort of overrated as a rookie (good in run support, struggled against top TEs). Hopefully, he’ll get better two years removed from the ACL tear. Houston and Hali, DJ, Flowers give some nice parts, the D-Line stinks.
Oh, and if they don’t sign D-Bowe, the receivers are an abomination.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:08 AM
Go to Arizona! Better herion trade!

January 3rd, 2013 at 11:09 AM
I doubt Arizona was ever close to Andy being their coach at all. I’m sure Reid’s agent floated that B.S to force K.C’s hand and it looks like it’s working.
K.C is toast though if they give Andy the run of the show which is what it sounds like they are doing. Andy is a good coach, but when it comes to all the other stuff he is beyond dreadful.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:10 AM
That’s sad considering how many 1st round picks were used on said line IIRC. Sign Cliff Avril!
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:10 AM
The cupboard’s not bare at KC by any means, but that team didn’t lose 14 games solely because Romeo Crennel was too comfortable on his ice floe to go for it on 4th and 1.
Sure, there are major issues with the offense and quarterback position, the line isn’t great (it’s not the worst in the league either) and the passing weapons stink outside Bowe.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:10 AM
Howard Eskin is a joker, but he’s dialed in with Andy Reid more than any other person on this planet. And when he said on Monday that he was fairly certain that Reid was going to go to KC, people should have paid more attention.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:10 AM
Those two deserve everything they get.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:11 AM
Oh, and if they don’t sign D-Bowe, the receivers are an abomination.
Remember before the season when Steve Breaston was going to give some inner city school a free Ipad for every 100 yard game he had this season? Well, I hope those kids don’t remember.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:11 AM
Comparing it to teams who have their majority of high draft picks from after the rookie salaries where fixed. Teams like the Lions, Rams, Chiefs are fucked considering you could get 3 excellent players for the cost of Tyson Jackson’s cap penalties. Fucking LSU.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:11 AM
Damn it, that sounds like they should get good things. They should not, only bad things should happen to them.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:12 AM
Eric Berry was a shell this year, and he was sort of overrated as a rookie
i was told he was talented, especially talented
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:12 AM
Andy is a good coach
The game clock is laughing at you now.
Those two deserve everything they get. gfunk
You a Sooner fan? Aggie?

January 3rd, 2013 at 11:13 AM
Interesting if you haven’t followed along with the use/risks of Toradol injections. Might become a bigger deal soon.

January 3rd, 2013 at 11:15 AM
Trade Suh for picks, trade down from 5 and re-sign Hillbilly to a cap friendly deal.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:15 AM
Damn it, that sounds like they should get good things. They should not, only bad things should happen to them.
I understood what you meant.
i was told he was talented, especially talented
I know it has been discussed a lot how he doesn’t belong in the pro bowl. We should all watch some game film of him being 15 yards away from any one on the field. Repeatedly. All season. Then we can discuss how he doesn’t belong in the pro bowl again.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:15 AM
Considering the biggest story of college bowl season thus far has been Clowney jacking up a guy, I doubt any health things are ever going to really become a bigger deal.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:16 AM
Real Sports had a good segment on Toradol last year. Didn’t hear jack shit about it once this NFL season.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:16 AM
That and during any mildly interesting decision he goes into diabetic shock and fucks everything up with a stupefied look on his face.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:16 AM
OU Gfunk
Damn. I didn’t know that. Beat those Aggies bastards. Not like you have any input into that.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:16 AM
This is the sorta-bad-QB version of “fuck, marry, kill” with Romo/Rivers/Stafford.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:19 AM
I’m an Eagles fan. Not a Reid fan though. Wanted him gone years ago. And he certainly has his faults, clock management, inability to mold an offense around a specific QB but rather try and fit every QB into his system. Apparently he can’t hire a good coaching staff and I think a lot of his success was a result of Jim Johnson and his fantastic defense.
That said, if KC had an actual GM, who could draft and evaluate talent and Andy’s job was to hire a staff and coach the players he could be mildly successful. He’s not the best coach out there, not a top 5 coach but given how many awful coaches are out there, KC can do a lot worse.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:19 AM
Interesting if you haven’t followed along with the use/risks of Toradol injections. Might become a bigger deal soon.
Toradol is really good.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:22 AM
- says every asshole in Pittsburgh after a cheap shot James Harrison hit
“Concussions are a big deal we have to protect the players”- same asshole during hockey season
/fixed for lockout
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:25 AM
Now there’s a ringing endorsement.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:25 AM
I can get behind that. But Zarda and Arthur Bryants aren’t any good either. That said, I’d put Okie Joes up against any food in the country. Then you’ve got Jack Stack which is the Pippen to Joe’s Jordan.
Also, fuck Carolina and Texas BBQ.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:26 AM
I’m not a Jeff Fisher fan, but he’s a good bridge coach for that Rams team. Reid could be that for someone, but I’m not sure a pass-happy coach with a stud RB and no QB is the best fit for him. At least in AZ, he has better weapons, and a chance to develop a QB.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:26 AM
Living in KC and having a team like the Chiefs always on is why anyones argument about Red Zone being bad is invalid.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:26 AM
Well Reid was most successful when he was just the coach. As he kept getting more and more power and started drafting guys and stuff like that the team got worse and worse.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:26 AM
The seesawing on Stafford from last year to this year has been nauseating.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:27 AM
Am I wrong though? I read that article when I saw it earlier and it was disturbing, but I still don’t think anything is going to actually change in the sport other than more lip service to placate Ray Lewis’s cunt of a mother.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:28 AM
I was prepared to not like Jack Stack and failed miserably at doing so. Very, very nice.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:29 AM
We’re doing this again?
To recap:
Texas BBQ whatever, because I don’t care for beef BBQ very much. But I do enjoy South Carolina (mustard-based) BBQ. I can’t get behind North Carolina (vinegar) BBQ. Dry-rub is good, but very difficult to do. I did date a girl once whose father made excellent dry-rub pork shoulder. Come to think of it, I think I spent more time with her father (who was a cool guy, we used to golf all the time) than her.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:29 AM
Hopefully. I actually sort of have a good feeling about it which surprises me. Maybe it’s just because in a couple days the Landry era will be over.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:32 AM
Vinegar based sauce is the worst.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:32 AM
I think you are. Three/four years ago, I had that conversation on a Pittsburgh site about concussions and head trauma, and was called an idiots/pansy/i should go watch flag football etc. I think it’s coming around, and public now at least is aware of it (even if the NFL only gives it lip service). The problem is that there is always the lawsuit, but then not as much attention given to the trial/resolution. If this kid wins a big public lawsuit, which he probably could, then toradol use probably gets cut way down.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:33 AM
Wife suggested Landry as a baby name (not very seriously, just going through a list)… between FNL and the QB, I had to veto.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:34 AM
What’s your impression of Bell and his ability to throw next season?
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:36 AM
Oh I agree that there’s now a decent discussion about it going on.
But a headline I saw recently was “Concussion awareness on the rise in Pop Warner football.” What I’m saying is the fact that the story is “awareness” of the fact that your elementary school kids could be getting concussions is, logically, not progress at all. It just shows how warped our priorities are that instead of just saying “whoa, uh maybe little kids shouldn’t be playing this game” to which the reaction is still almost always the “you’re a pussy” response, we’re just becoming aware of how fucked up they might get from it. Great work parents.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:38 AM
Or the fact that that drug is still being given and only two schools are doing something about it. The stakes are just so high in football that unless one of the insurance related lawsuits ends up making it prohibitively expensive, it’s going to remain a gladiatorial contest that starts when you’re a kid and ends when you’re a fifty year old vegetable regardless of how many studies come out.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:40 AM
A few years ago I wouldn’t have thought twice about letting my son play football. I’ve definitely reconsidered that.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:41 AM
Oh and also I’m going to continue watching it because I like gladiatorial contests.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:41 AM
I have no reply to that Moleman. You sound right, and I hope you’re wrong. But if Mike Webster’s life/death didn’t do anything to change the culture in Pittsburgh…
Maybe the discussion leads to more. I do think that the lawsuits will make a big change to toradol use, eventually. It just might be replaced with something else though, so maybe not a culture change.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:49 AM
You gotta split NC into too regions: East and West (Lexington). East in the whole hog and vinegar based, with maybe a little hot sauce, West and Lexington is pork shoulder and red “dip.” It’s most similar to a Memphis style sauce, but thinner and tangier.
Pork (excluding ribs):
Lexington;
Memphis;
SC;
KC; and
E. NC.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:56 AM
It just shows how warped our priorities are that instead of just saying “whoa, uh maybe little kids shouldn’t be playing this game” to which the reaction is still almost always the “you’re a pussy” response, we’re just becoming aware of how fucked up they might get from it. Great work parents.
the worst of it is not that it’s becoming apparent that football can hurt your brain, but that the parents are either not stopping their kids from playing–kids are having fun and won’t choose to leave the sport–or are pushing their kids to play at all or continue
i don’t say ban yackle football for kids, i say ban it until age 12 or so. the field will be level, experientially if not physically, and you will have saved in some cases six years of little brains being sloshed around for…..what?
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:57 AM
oops, yackle football is after too many beers with other glory day ex-fb players
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:58 AM
to change the culture in Pittsburgh…
the penguins have been leaders in donating to the cause of concussion research. or at least leaders in looking like they care
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:59 AM
Oh and also I’m going to continue watching it because I like gladiatorial contests.
absolutely. they choose to sacrifice future health for present riches and fame

But the heroin-to-meth joke is out there… waiting.
