James Franklin, Vanderbilt Coach, Stopped a Press Conference to Hug a Fan
All, College Football, Fans, Something Positive, Video January 2nd. 2013, 9:51am
James Franklin is quickly becoming one of the best things about the cesspool that is college football. Whether it is giving out ice cream on campus, changing the culture at downtrodden Vanderbilt, or toeing the line when it comes to voting for the SEC, everybody loves James. [H/T Rick Muscles]

That fan didn’t even speak in a complete sentence. I’d be afraid to hug him.
January 2nd, 2013 at 9:55 AM
Is this the same James Franklin that went ballistic on one of his players during the bowl game? Even Bobby Knight thought he was out of line during that tirade…
January 2nd, 2013 at 9:59 AM
The Music City Bowl lets anyone in a press conference.
And college football is awesome.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:00 AM
How dare they hand out free school to those inner-city kids.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:00 AM
lol. For real. Dude is a prick. He’s a good salesman and knows good PR, but he’s a prick.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:01 AM
Where is he towing it?

All of this. It’s amazing how little some know about him. He’s a massive prick, but he can recruit like mad. I’m not sure how he is as a coach just yet, but winning 9 games at Vandy is kind of insane, no matter how weak his schedule was.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:06 AM
Not when Curt Phillips is involved
Are there any more Rodgers brothers left to recruit out of junior college? The Vandy one turned out to be a perfectly decent college QB
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:08 AM
Once while jogging, Billy Tubbs hugged a van.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:10 AM
Not when Curt Phillips is involved
I watched a good chunk of this game. I was told everyone loves him and he is tremendous by the announcers. All I noticed was he liked to scramble early.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:10 AM
Preseason Top 5 for next year:
Bama
Ohio State
Stanford
Georgia
Texas A&M (will be overrated as they’re going to lose both OTs and their best DL)
Florida, Michigan, South Carolina, Clemson, Oregon all fall somewhere in the top 10. Thoughts?
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:11 AM
Shouldn’t be long before he gets scooped up by a big boy program. Maybe Nebraska, in another year or two.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:11 AM
We talking about when the retuner bounced off one of his lineman? I thought that was funny as hell.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:13 AM
Pelini isn’t getting canned unless he punches some kid (could happen). I know some people think he is iffy, but firing a coach who wins 10 games every year is a tough sell to other perspective coaches.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:15 AM
You have to hope he has a 6-6/7-5 type year. Tough to do in the B1G.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:16 AM
Next year they don’t play Ohio State or Wisconsin. If they aren’t 9-3 or better he might get fired because people are waning on him and going 8-4 with that shitshow of a schedule should be mandated. UCLA, Michigan and Northwestern will be their toughest games. Think about that for a second. That’s absurd.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:18 AM
Need ND maybe LSU in there somewhere.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:19 AM
Think about that for a second. That’s absurd.
Not really. They play in the Big 10.
/BAM!
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:19 AM
Shit. Totally forgot about ND. They’ll definitely be there. LSU is interesting. I think they lose a good bit on the OL and DL, plus Ried at safety. Though it seems LSU will always have a sick defense.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:20 AM
God these bowl games suck. Florida’s offense and a Big East team tonight.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:20 AM
I would hate the guy, but as a Vandy season ticket holder, he’s the greatest human being in the history of the world. Once he leaves I will agree with this.
He’s like that annoying scrappy Duke/UNC player. You love him when he’s on your team, but want to punch him in the face otherwise.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:20 AM
What B12 team will rule the roost next year? Can Blake Bell throw the ball? Can Texas defend anyone? KST will lose a shit load. OKST maybe? Baylor?
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:21 AM
LSU brings back everyone on offense. Not sure if that makes you wanna move them up or down.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:21 AM
I didn’t watch a single play of the abortion last night. I may catch some of this game because FLAs defense is so much fun to watch, and Bridgewater is a stud. Pumped about the Fiesta, Cotton and Natty.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:21 AM
Weren’t you the guy who thought he would get canned? I think it’s unlikely too but new AD might have different visions for the program.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:22 AM
Classy guy and glad to see him get this program heading in the right direction
/Took VANDY -7.5 for 2 units
//Thank you James Franklin
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:22 AM
Michigan’s going to have a decent but very young OL, especially if/when Lewan leaves and no running game to speak of. They’re still a year away from being a top 10 program. Fortunately their schedule is home friendly. Sitting at 9-4 a year from now would be pretty realistic.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:22 AM
NIU’s lucky they got matched up with a team with a penchant for sleepwalking…the final score was far more forgiving than it had any right being, that team was 2007 Hawaii bad
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:23 AM
They lose 2 OL, not the 3 I was thinking. That’s not bad. They should have a great offense next year, but of course they won’t. Imagine if they had a decent OC? Those RBs and WRs can make Mett look good. They also lose less than I thought on defense. I would think Mingo and Montgomery are gone, though. If they stay…yikes.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:25 AM
Not me. I don’t see how you fire a coach who wins that many games every year. NEB is stuck in purgatory at the moment.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:25 AM
If Murray leaves UGA will fall outside of the preseason top 10 I would think.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:25 AM
Ya I thought the game reflected worse on FSU than NIU. Everyone knew the team that lost to Iowa didnt belong.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:27 AM
Agreed. Can’t fire a guy for winning 9 or 10 games. But there’s nothing telling me they are on the cusp of winning 12 and competing for national championship or even B1G championship.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:28 AM
With that said, if Michigan can beat ND, they should be undefeated at the end of October.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:28 AM
Yeeeesh. Holiday hangover? Gosh i hope so. Thanks.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:30 AM
What B12 team will rule the roost next year? Can Blake Bell throw the ball? Can Texas defend anyone? KST will lose a shit load. OKST maybe? Baylor?
Oklahoma reloads. Okie St. maintains. KSU is done. I think Baylor’s ceiling is always going to be Vandy’s ceiling. Fans of Texas realize they are in the Wasted Talent Years. I don’t think anything changes there until Mack is put out to pasture.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:30 AM
When’s the last time a Big 12 team wasn’t in the preseason top 10? Not exactly sure who will deserve to be there, but I’m guessing OU will make it just out of habit.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:30 AM
LSU fans have been imagining it since 2007. As much good as Les has done his inability to address the OC and QB positions over the past 5 years can’t be ignored.
The DE’s are gone. Reid is projected as a 2nd rounder, not sure if he’ll stay. Tharold Simon needs to stay, he got exposed this year without Claiborne/Badger. Their young DB’s will get better. Could hinge on Kevin Minter who was probably their MVP this year, not sure how he projects at the next level.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:31 AM
TCU is a sneaky pick as Big 12 favorite next year. They’re super young.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:32 AM
Exactly. That’s what has to be the worst for those around the program. Apparently Pelini is super egocentric, doesn’t like to be eclipsed within the program and doesn’t take criticism well. All great qualities when you’re not named Saban.
ND will regress to the mean next year, though I do think they will play Bama relatively well. They won’t hang 25+ on them, but they won’t get gashed for 350 like UGA, either.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:35 AM
Exactly. I was sitting here thinking I can’t remember a time there wasn’t a clear-cut team from that league that will be in the top-10. If OU beats A&M you can lock them in, though.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:36 AM
Do they, though? I know so little about them on the lines. Do they bring back a lot on the OL and DL? I know they lose Jones, and while Bell is a beast on the goal line, is he a good QB?
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:38 AM
That’s the million dollar question, isn’t it? Do they put a lot more running stuff into their offense with him at the helm? Can he throw at all?
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:41 AM
I guess we’ll find out in September.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:42 AM
Michigam is not going to be in the preseason top 10. I’d be willing to bet on that. I have the 2013 top 10 as this for now. This all changes if teams lose a lot of underclassmen or their coach obviously.
Definitely agree that A&M will be over ranked since their replacing most of what was the best or second best offensive line in the country.
1. Alabama
2. Ohio State
3. Oregon
4. Georgia
5. LSU
6. Texas A&M
7. Notre Dame
8. Oklahoma
9. Stanford
10. South Carolina
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:43 AM
ND loses 4/5 OL starters, but only 4 defensive starters. They lose their best receiving threat in Eifert as well as Riddick and Wood. They’re offense might be abysmal next year.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:46 AM
I could see this. I do think UGA will fall a bit should Murray leave.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:46 AM
Fuck me. Their offense…
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:51 AM
Yeah, Michigan isn’t cracking a preseason top 10 unless the writer is an idiot. That being said, if Lewan decides to stay and they pull in Derrick Green to play RB, that will solve some issues. Was pretty happy to see Schofield flip to LT when Lewan had to leave for a series. He was able to keep Clowney out of the backfield, even if it was a small sample size.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:53 AM
Depending on how many Gators leave early on defense, Florida will be in the top 10. I know Elam is rumored to be all but gone. Not sure about the DT and DE’s, though.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:54 AM
If Murray stays that Georgia offense sure has some weaponry coming back. But that defense…yikes. I’m guessing the schedule will be tougher than this year’s.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:59 AM
First month(ish) is awesome, but tough. Open @Clemson then play SoCar at home the next week. Have some puff game and then play at home against LSU followed by a trip to Tennessee.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:02 AM
UGAs defense can be no worse than it was this year in 2013. I think it will be better, but that’s only because this year’s was so horrible.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:03 AM
So Gary Andersen has two years to get the program up to speed for this one…here’s to Saban being ready to bail on another NFL job at that point in time
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:05 AM
Hmmm…rank the road games by toughness (not counting Clemson, Cocktail Party): Tenn, Vandy, Auburn, Ga. Tech.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:07 AM
Vandy, GT, Aub, Tenn…assuming no Bray
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:08 AM
oh Bray declared. Did not see that
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:09 AM
Auburn, Tenn, Vandy, GT
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:13 AM
I’d be surprised if Saban was there at that time. Honestly.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:15 AM
I’m surprised he’s staying this year, but those are the reports
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:16 AM
OSU defense taking a bit hit with Simon and Hankins leaving. Two of the best interior lineman. Good young talent to replace but I am worried. Somebody could run over tOSU. Offense still needs more playmakers too.
I think 6-10 in there is about right.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:19 AM
Lewan should stay. I remember when Chad Henne, Mike Hart and Jake Long came back for their senior years.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:19 AM
Ohio State will begin ranked higher than they should be, but that’s because no one looks at the OL or DL. They’ll see Urban and Miller and put them in the top 3.
What reports?
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:23 AM
Schefter on ESPN today said there’s no way Saban leaves this year
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:24 AM

January 2nd, 2013 at 11:24 AM
Bummer. Though what’s funny is if Bama weren’t allowed to oversign they’d not be in the position they are today.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:26 AM
Why would Saban leave? They already built him a fuckin statue there! Only way he leaves, is if there is a threat of sanctions from the NCAA.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:29 AM
On defense, OSU loses 6 of their front 7 (Shazier’s the only one coming back), 1 of 2 corners (maybe both if Roby declares) and 1 of 2 safeties. It’ll be a very young defense next year, and if they miss out a couple linebackers, there will be walk-ons on the LB depth chart.
I’m OK with the offense, provided Herman/Meyer recognize that Hyde running North/South needs to be the basis of the running game. They’ll have young talent coming in to try and take some of Braxton’s EastWest & big play load.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:34 AM
In all fairness, Long made millions more by coming back.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:34 AM
OSU’s OL only loses the RT (a converted TE). Rest returns and there’s depth there. Rest of the offense in intact (not counting FBs, because they’ve been replaced by TEs).
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:35 AM
That said, OSU should be closer to 10 than 1.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:35 AM
Because after he most likely wins Monday night, he’ll have nothing to prove other than say he can coach at the highest level.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:36 AM
mike hart was the least of those three nfl-wise
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:40 AM
Agree, but I’d bet that’s not the case.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:59 AM
Running a potential dynasty isn’t a horrible gig. He tried the NFL, and really wasn’t very good at it.
January 2nd, 2013 at 12:02 PM
To prove he can hack it outside the minor leagues. That he can win with equal talent
January 2nd, 2013 at 12:46 PM
I like that we’re all calling him a prick based on the fact that some loser Tennessee fan is calling him that. I can understand the bitterness seeing how he made Vandy the better program.
But your right, it’s CRAZY that a football coach yelled at a player. Just nuts!! Sorry about your non-bowl team.
