Florida State’s Vince Williams on Jordan Lynch of Northern Illinois: ‘He’s terrible … He’s not good at all’
Florida State topped Northern Illinois in an Orange Bowl snoozer, 31-10. Northern Illinois star QB Jordan Lynch couldn’t do a damn thing against the Seminoles defense, rushing 23 times for 44 yards, and completing just 15-of-41 passes. He was sacked three times and intercepted once.
For someone who did a lot of talk earlier in the week, Lynch didn’t back it up.
Lynch said he believed the Seminoles hadn’t seen an offense quite like his. He added that he and his teammates wanted FSU’s defenders “on their knees” by the fourth quarter of the game. At that point, with them on the ground, the Huskies were going to “just keep pounding away,” he added.
Lynch’s coach tried to play the “he was misquoted!” card a few days ago, but the damage was done. The comments fired up Florida State’s defense, which pounded Lynch all night. If FSU’s anemic offense knew what it was doing, the Seminoles win by 30+, easily.
FSU linebacker Vince Williams had 10 tackles, and a sack of Lynch, and afterward, ripped the QB:
“He’s terrible,” Williams said. “I can’t believe they tried us like that. They tried our life, man. … He’s not good at all.”
Lynch didn’t exactly look like NFL material against a defense with a few NFL players, but perhaps the league’s new fascination with the read option will get him a look from someone. The arm and legs are certainly there, and he carved up the MAC. [via the Orlando Sentinel]

He watched the same game the rest of us did.

“I can’t believe they tried us like that. They tried our life, man.”
They certainly did
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:33 AM
Herbstreit was right
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:34 AM
That is a sick burn. Lynch looked slow and he got popped quite a few times. Probably best to keep his mouth shut in the future.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:36 AM
Remember when whiny people got all over Herbstreit for saying NIU sucked and was a joke? Good times.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:38 AM
“FSU constantly penetrating the rear end is wearing those Huskies out”
-Matt Millen last night
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:39 AM
to be fair, the coach didn;t say lynch was misquoted. he said ‘what is he supposed to say, that we’ll be lucky to get some first downs?’ lynch talking anything but cliches was a mistake tho for sure. the only chance niu had was for fsu to be disinterested
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:39 AM
Imagine how fun the game would have been with UGA and FSU. A man can dream that one day these shit teams won’t ruin the best bowl games…
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:40 AM
I would have thought running the QB up the middle would have been ditched after the fifth time it failed.
And Lynch really didn’t need to fire up FSU. That’s a bunch of underachievers who always play just good enough to win – why motivate them?
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:42 AM
Holy hell. I hadn’t looked at the box score or even read about this game until now. Those are some epic numbers.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:42 AM
“I can’t believe they tried us like that. They tried our life, man.”
I think that is outstanding. I’m not quite sure what it means, but I like it.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:43 AM
Towards the end Millen said he thought the NIU defense had played pretty well…at that point they had allowed 31 points and 530 yards and FSU was calling off the dogs
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:43 AM
Not NIU’s fault that UGA didnt make the Orange – blame the two SEC teams in front of UGA first, or the system that spreads the wealth like this.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:43 AM
NIU grad who took FSU m14. cold blooded i know
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:44 AM
I had the exact same reaction. No freaking clue what it means, but it sounded awesome.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:45 AM
but MAC and Sun Belt champs deserve auto bids in an expanded playoff format
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:45 AM
Who said I was blaming NIU? I’m aware that the system itself is trash.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:45 AM
The BCS has fucked the Orange Bowl. This used to be THE bowl game. Miami/Notre Dame/FSU vs. Nebraska/Oklahoma/Colorado, usually with a national title on the line. Part of it is the decline of Miami/FSU but it seems like the Orange always gets last choice.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:45 AM
Sounds to me like NIU needs to fire their GM and offensive coordinator.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:45 AM
Where TBL’s lead would be:
“In a laugher of a game no one watched, Ohio State torched Western Michigan 56-13.”
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:46 AM
but MAC and Sun Belt champs deserve auto bids in an expanded playoff format
Boom. Yep. That’s why I can’t take any playoff format seriously that requires conference champs from all conferences to be included.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:47 AM
If Clint Trickett is any good at QB the Noles should be pretty stout next year. I assume the German DE is leaving, but they’ve recruited so well along the DL since Fisher has taken over. Of course they’ll probably still lose two games.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:48 AM
Part of it is the decline of Miami/FSU but it seems like the Orange always gets last choice.
It declined because it tied its load to the Big East.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:48 AM
And yet Florida State did not pull away until late in the third quarter….
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:48 AM
The only people who want this are idiots who want CFB to be just like the NFL. There are never more than 6-8 teams who are worthy of playing for a national title. Hell, I’d argue there aren’t even that many, but I can see where one year things might get crazy. I think a 6-team system works the best, but that’s only on the basis of having the final teams ranked 1-6 getting in, no matter what league they come from.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:49 AM
i’m sure i’ll regret this, but do i have to display the average winning margin for BCS title games? i had to move a muscle a couple years ago to do this when folks were complaining about wanting to see the best teams from the best conferences play in bowls
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:50 AM
And yet Florida State did not pull away until late in the third quarter….
Yep. It was a game for awhile. FSU’s offense was garbage. Thing switched when NIU got tired and then Lynch got that look of fear in his eyes. He wasn’t very good, but he turned to awful in the 4th quarter.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:50 AM
And yet Florida State did not pull away until late in the third quarter….
they weren;t advertised as a good offensive team
and btw, why did montee ball not get the ball at the goal line yesterday?
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:51 AM
They did not choose wisely with the conference tie ins – Big East and ACC.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:51 AM
The only people who want this are idiots who want CFB to be just like the NFL.
It was probably best for you to take time off from commenting here during CFB season this year. Your head would have exploded.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:52 AM
true.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:54 AM
That’s why I took a break.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:54 AM
They just didn’t finish off drives, had 400 yards at the 12 minute mark of the 3rd quarter…NIU was just lucky the score didn’t reflect the play on the field
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:54 AM
That game was pretty gross last night. NIU was so over matched in the trenches.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:55 AM
Get ready. My bet is that if the 4 “power” conference champs are int he top 6, they’ll all be in the playoffs. Whatever committee they come up with will only be deciding on which teams to include when there aren’t 4 conference champs in the top 6.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:55 AM
The last 7 Orange Bowls have had atrocious match ups.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:56 AM
Exactly. It’s why the cry for a playoff is so funny. The big conferences are going to make sure their league has a representative no matter what.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:56 AM
uncle Brent was on this
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:57 AM
The Orange Bowl gave us this, let’s settle down with all the badmouthing
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:57 AM
And one of the best pictures.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:57 AM
They just didn’t finish off drives, had 400 yards at the 12 minute mark of the 3rd quarter…NIU was just lucky the score didn’t reflect the play on the field
That seems more an indictment of Florida State than North Illinois.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:57 AM
They thought Ryan Shazier may be waiting for him.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:57 AM
Well shit…
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:57 AM
Yep, partially by design (tie-ins) and partially by luck. It just so happens that a MAC team busted the system this year. If it was TCU or Boise State from years past, it would have been a decent match-up.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:58 AM
so true..but at least it’ll be “fair”
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:58 AM
Exactly. It’s why the cry for a playoff is so funny. The big conferences are going to make sure their league has a representative no matter what.
The more things change the more they remain the same.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:58 AM
margins: 7, 17, 11, 23, 7, 7, 36, 3, 27, 14, 16, 3, 21
not as bad as i remember. averages don’t mean as much as looking at raw numbers. five single digit, eight double digit
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:59 AM
The Orange Bowl gave us this,
Mark Mangino. Legend.
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:59 AM
/QB runs directly into the middle of the line for no gain, again
January 2nd, 2013 at 11:59 AM
Not when the point is that NIU had no business being a BCS at-large team…FSU got in because they won the ACC, nothing could be done about that
January 2nd, 2013 at 12:00 PM
but it seems like the Orange always gets last choice
The last 7 Orange Bowls have had atrocious match ups.
Indeed. And really it should be the Fiesta Bowl getting stuck with these matchups.
/Fuck the Fiesta Bowl
January 2nd, 2013 at 12:00 PM
I just saw where a FB was the MVP of the Orange Bowl. Hilarious.
January 2nd, 2013 at 12:01 PM
The Sugar Bowl did get stuck with Hawaii and Cincinnati (and Louisville), and the Fiesta did get UConn, so i suppose it’s been spread around. The Orange never gets one of those “4 vs 5″ type matchup though, but i suppose that’s mostly the ACC’s fault.
January 2nd, 2013 at 12:02 PM
/Fuck the Fiesta Bowl
the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl
/for all the chips
January 2nd, 2013 at 12:02 PM
I’ve always liked the Fiesta Bowl. The B12-P12 matchups with the occasional Ohio State-Texas game mixed in or Boise-OU were fun. The Big East and ACC are just terrible leagues. Gives the OB no chance.
January 2nd, 2013 at 12:02 PM
Not when the point is that NIU had no business being a BCS at-large team…FSU got in because they won the ACC, nothing could be done about that
Once again I don’t see how that’s an indictment of NIU. I doubt that when they put together their 120th most difficult schedule that they pictured a BCS bowl being dumb enough to invite them. What were they supposed to do? Not go?
And NIU being invited in the first place is more a product of teams like Miami, Penn State, and Louisiana Tech not going to bowls, despite being eligible, at least in terms of win totals.
January 2nd, 2013 at 12:03 PM
The Big East and ACC are just terrible leagues.
You know it’s not nice to speak ill of the dead and dying.
January 2nd, 2013 at 12:05 PM
boise state gave cfb fans one of the highlights of the first decade of this century with that OU upset. so did appy state
January 2nd, 2013 at 12:08 PM
I’m blaming the process, not them…this was a clearly undeserving team, how anyone involved thought they could compete boggles the mind

January 2nd, 2013 at 12:12 PM
I’m blaming the process, not them…this was a clearly undeserving team, how anyone involved thought they could compete boggles the mind
Understood. But if even just one of Ohio State, Penn State, Miami, or Louisiana Tech was in a bowl I think the domino effect would be enough to keep NIU out of a BCS bowl.

NIU at least played better than Clemson did last year.
January 2nd, 2013 at 12:21 PM
And NIU absolutely deserved to be there.
January 2nd, 2013 at 12:22 PM
Lost to Iowa and played the worst schedule in the country, not seeing the argument here
January 2nd, 2013 at 12:22 PM
No they didn’t. Not when there were several other teams who were far better and had better wins. As someone stated above, I don’t blame them one bit for playing in the game. They should have never been asked. The system is at fault.
January 2nd, 2013 at 12:23 PM
NIU at least played better than Clemson did last year.

@HuskerDawg The QB might be Jameis Winston he was the #1 QB in the nation of 2012
January 2nd, 2013 at 1:00 PM
hey Florida State, perhaps you shouldn’t have lost to NC State.
January 2nd, 2013 at 1:20 PM
wasn’t this game at 17-10 w/ niu on the move after an inside kick late in Q3? then I don’t think fsu pulled away until they got that fumble where the niu rb’s knee looked down.
don’t thin too much harm comes from having niu in this game
