2013 NFL Mock Draft: Three Months to Go, and Two QBs Are in the First Round, with Tajh Boyd Making a Charge
We had a 2013 NFL mock draft back in May. Then we had one in late August. Around the middle of the college football season, in October, we did another mock. Then we did a 4th mock for the 2013 draft during Thanksgiving week. Since then, a lot of players have declared for the draft or decided to stay in school. With the NFL regular season over, here’s the bulk of the draft order, with the playoff teams yet to be determined.
1. Kansas City Chiefs 2-14 - Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah. Last in scoring offense, 2nd-to-last in passing offense. There’s no QB to draft this high – unless, like many other college football fans, you fell in love with Tajh Boyd’s performance against LSU – so the smart move (assuming they don’t trade down) is fortifying the 26th-rated run D. Not familiar with Star’s work? Watch him manhandle the USC o-line and ring up six solo tackles against BYU.
2. Jacksonville Jaguars 2-14 – Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia. Another team with QB uncertainty, but also massive defensive issues (30th in ypg, 30th in rush defense, 22nd vs. the pass, last in the NFL in sacks with 20). Jones, a poor man’s Von Miller, would be ideal in a 3-4 defense, which might be the only way he falls in the draft.
3. Oakland Raiders 4-12 – Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M. I didn’t think he’d come out early, so he only appeared in the Thanksgiving mock, when it became apparent his season was dominant enough to maybe leave College Station early. He had three sacks and three tackles for loss in the season opener vs. Florida and was a beast all year, picking up All-American honors. He’s probably the most buzzy player in the draft right now. Oakland had 25 sacks last season, 2nd-to-last in the NFL.
4. Philadelphia Eagles 4-12 – Luke Joeckel, OL, Texas A&M. Nick Foles and Shady McCoy will be thrilled with a guy who will probably be considered the best offensive lineman in the draft.
5. Detroit Lions 4-12 – Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama. Feels like offensive line or secondary, and with no safety of value here, I lean cornerback. Milliner had a better season than UA’s Dre Kirkpatrick, who went in the 1st round in 2012. I would listen to an argument for an OL or DE in the event Cliff Avril leaves.
6. Cleveland Browns 5-11 – Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia. The Browns, who will soon have a new GM and coach, need a QB, but picking one here seems like a reach. Surely, they’ll entertain trade offers for the pick. Why Geno? Because whoever takes this job will need a QB, and it ain’t gonna be Mike Vick. Going to be an interesting few months for Cleveland.
7. Arizona Cardinals 5-11 – Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU. Speedy, hard-hitting (ask Sammy Watkins), and as I’ve written, in the mold of the great Lawrence Taylor. The Cardinals offense was putrid (31st in scoring, 32nd in yards per game), but if Andy Reid gets the job, you know Kevin Kolb will be his guy.
8. Buffalo Bills 6-10 – Manti Te’o, LB, Notre Dame. The defense made improvements last offseason, but it was a colossal failure on the field, finishing 31st against the run despite 1st round anchors in the middle (Dareus, Kyle Williams). Gosh I hope the Bills don’t take him. Because …
9. New York Jets 6-10 – Taylor Lewan, OL, Michigan. Can’t imagine the pick being anything other than LB or offensive line, unless something nutty happens in free agency. The case for Te’o: Bart Scott is done, and if you pair Harris and Te’o in the middle, you begin to get back to your 2009/2010 defenses. The case for OL: The running game sucked, and Sanchez was frequently under duress. Slausen is likely gone, and Austin Howard had his struggles. Sleeper pick? Tajh Boyd, the Clemson QB who against LSU, kind of, sort of, reminded folks of Russell Wilson, the sudden Seattle star.
10. Tennessee Titans 6-10 – Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State. The Titans were 24th against the rush. 26th against the pass. The defense is … bad. There’s talent – Morgan, Ayers, Brown, Wimberly to name a few – but the middle is soft. If T’eo falls this far, the Titans will grab him. Hankins is a solid run-stopper, not a stat-sheet stuffer.
11. San Diego Chargers 7-9 – Chance Warmack, G, Alabama. Pick an offensive lineman, any offensive lineman. Rivers was sacked 49 times, 2nd highest in the NFL. The new coach/GM combo could clean house and start over, but the guess today is they go OL.
12. Miami Dolphins 7-9 – Keenan Allen, WR, California. Anemic offense (18 ppg) hurt an impressive defense. Receiver makes sense, but when free agency hits, there are plenty of viable options (Jennings, Wallace, Bowe, to name a few). Philbin was with the Packers when they got Jordy Nelson in the 2nd round. Maybe he subscribes to the “rarely take a WR/RB in the 1st unless he’s can’t miss.” Love Allen, but not sure he’s “can’t miss.”
13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 7-9 – Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State. The worst secondary in football needs help. Trading Talib created a hole. This isn’t a strong CB class, so options could be thin later. It is a deep pass-rushing draft (Tampa had just 27 sacks last season, tied for 3rd worst in the NFL), so that need to be filled later.
14. Carolina Panthers 7-9 – Jesse Williams, DT, Alabama. Second year in a row the Panthers go into the offseason with people thinking, “well, maybe next they’re playoff material.” I’ll be interested to see how they improve the defense.
15. New Orleans Saints 7-9 – Matt Elam, S, Florida. According to history, this is the worst defense the NFL has ever seen. Remember, the Saints took defensive players in the 1st round in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Scary. Elam, a hard-hitter, adds toughness to a putrid secondary. LSU fans know his work well.
16. St. Louis Rams 7-8-1 – Jonathan Cooper, G, UNC. Jeff Fisher loves to go defense in the first round (in Tennessee and last year, too), but the Rams have a rapidly-improving D and their offense remains a disaster. So pick a lineman, and then grab a skill position player with the 1st round pick from the Redskins.
17. Pittsburgh Steelers 8-8 – Dion Jordan, OLB/DE, Oregon. Offensive line? Heir apparent to Roethlisberger? This time around, we’ll opt to improve an aging defense (five of 11 starters are 31 or older). At 6-6, 243, I could see Jordan replacing Harrison or Keisel in a year or two.
18. Dallas Cowboys 8-8 – Matt Barkley, QB, USC. Jerry Jones is calling the shots. Would you really be shocked if, given Romo’s last game, Jones took Barkley? As we guessed in November, he’s going to win over everyone during interviews and convince people that he wasn’t the problem for USC’s awful season. Barkley feels like a Cowboys’ QB.
19. New York Giants 9-7 – Khaseem Greene, LB, Rutgers. The defense was porous, and it cost them a playoff spot. Top priorities are linebacker and secondary. I know you can’t read too much into bowl games, but Greene was terrific against Virginia Tech, and had nice games against Cincinnati and Louisville, too. His stock is rising. Here he is forcing three fumbles against Syracuse, to go with 1.5 sacks and 1.5 tackles for loss.
20. Chicago Bears 10-6 – Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame. Want to win the Super Bowl? Add this stud tight end, and dare defenses to single cover Brandon Marshall or Alshon Jeffrey. Eifert will catch anything. Worth nothing: Four of the front seven defenders are 32 or older. Also, given Cutler’s injury history, and ornery personality, perhaps a QB (Geno Smith?) will be considered. Yes, I’m aware the offensive line remains leaky.
21. St. Louis Rams (via Washington) – Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee. I know Tavon Austin of West Virginia is rapidly becoming the most popular receiver in the draft, but I can’t wait until Patterson dominates the combine. Kid is a freak. Sort of reminds me of AJ Green.
22. Cincinnati – Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia. If the Bengals make a run this postseason (I don’t think they will), then add another playmaker like Austin and a cornerback and maybe another running back, they probably open 2013 as a top three team in the AFC.
23. Minnesota – Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor. The receiver run continues. That the Vikings made the playoffs with no receiver to speak of since Percy Harvin went down, is very impressive. Williams is a burner who had 97 catches and over 1800 yards after RG3 left.
24. Indianapolis – Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State. Freeney could leave as a free agent, but even if he stays, this defense needs help. A lot of people like Werner in the top 10. Sorry, just not as in love with him as others.
25. Baltimore – Alex Okafor, DE, Texas. When we spoke with Herman Edwards last month, he made an interesting note that the Ravens were starting to look like the fading Jets. Quick fix? Well, besides getting the ball to Ray Rice, they really need to bolster the defense. Okafor was part of a dreadful Texas defense, but had 4.5 sacks against Oregon State in a bowl game and five tackles for loss.
26. Green Bay – Jake Matthews, OL, Texas A&M. Aaron Rodgers was sacked a league-high 51 times. The other primary need is defense, anywhere.
27. Houston – DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson. In the shadow of Sammy Watkins in 2011, but broke out this year, big-time.
28. Atlanta – Kevin Minter, LB, LSU. When Marshawn Lynch gashes them for 150 in a home playoff loss, you’ll be on board with this pick. Minter played one of the great halves of football I saw this year against Florida.
29. Seattle – Alec Ogletree, LB, Georgia. Feels like a luxury pick, no? Looked up and down the roster, spoke to Seattle fans, read Seahawks reports … there is no gaping hole that needs to be plugged. The way Ogletree flies around the field, he’d be a perfect fit there.
30. Denver – Barrett Jones, OL, Alabama. He just seems like the type of guy who can play anywhere and protect Peyton Manning.
31. New England – Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri. The next Vince Wilfork? Ha. There won’t be another Wilfork, but Richardson could slide in there as Big Vince gets up there in age (he’s 31). The need is in the secondary, but as you’ve read, and will continue to read, nobody has any clue what Bill Belichick will do in the first round. If I had to guess … trade.
32. San Francisco – Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson. Didn’t think I’d go there, did you? Well, this is under the assumption that Alex Smith leaves town, and Harbaugh will want a backup. This is akin to the Patriots drafting Ryan Mallet … who could be a trade piece this offseason.

If Harbaugh decides to go with Capernick, wouldn’t a veteran backup make more sense here?
Either way, I can’t imagine San Fran doing this with their 1st round pick, no matter how far back in the 1st round the pick might be.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:17 PM
Somebody will reach for Barkley before 18
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:17 PM
Also, where is Robert Woods?
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:17 PM
Fuck the haters on Mock Drafts, by the way. These things are totally useless and totally awesome.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:17 PM
The secondary’s legit, don’t let one bad game from Tramon Williams convince you otherwise…they invested 7 picks on defensive players last year, doubt the look much that way again and work at developing that talent
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:18 PM
Jones won’t go that high, and he sure as hell won’t go to a team that doesn’t run the 3-4.
/has no clue what JAX runs
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:19 PM
How good of a prospect is Dee Millner? Like Patrick Peterson/Morris Claiborne good? If he’s not at that level. I’d rather just draft a DE or a LB at 5.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:19 PM
…in the third round. TBL, where drafting backups in the first round happens!
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:19 PM
He’s already announced he’s leaving.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:20 PM
/pours one out for no good QBs to take in the first round
//another season of Fitztragic
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:20 PM
Why does he run the ball so much. He’s not good at it.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:21 PM
If they bring back Avril or KVB……
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:21 PM
Absolutely zero chance the Cardinals pick OLB at 7. Not when O Line is such a gaping hole. They’ll decide between Warmack and Lewan if both are available. My preference is Warmack.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:22 PM
I think that’s why he put him back in the mock.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:22 PM
Dude is so good. I also think Ogletree will go to a 3-4 team as well. He’s a perfect ILB.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:22 PM
Alshon’s not so good at getting even NFL open, in the last Green Bay game they dared Cutler to keep throwing at him and it didn’t end well since he had to keep resorting to pushing off
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:23 PM
if Jerry Jones drafts a QB, I would bet he takes Tyler Wilson before Barkley. Jerry loves him some former Hogs.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:23 PM
Good but not super elite. 5 would seem way high to me.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:23 PM
Where’s Denard?
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:24 PM
number of readers who got to 32 to see me sneak in a 3rd QB …
none? Maybe the 3 patriots fans who read this site?
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:24 PM
jerry jones is crazy but not stupid. No chance he takes a joke of a QB in barkley
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:24 PM
Not sure Richardson is a 3-4 DT, though. Maybe he could be a 3-4 end, but I would assume a 4-3 team would fit better.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:25 PM
Tannehill went #8 last year and Weeden went #22. The year before, Locker went #8, Gabbert #10, and Ponder #12. Hard to see Barkley as a worse prospect than any of those guys.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:25 PM
They still have Andy Dalton.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:25 PM
Where’s Denard?
In the CFL.
/future news
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:26 PM
Well, it’s already been mocked…so I would guess north of 5.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:26 PM
I’d be super happy if Boyd left Clemson. Ellington is surely leaving, right? That means a new QB would have Sammy Watkins and not much else to throw to when UGA comes calling 8/31/13.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:26 PM
Although the Bears could use a tight end like Eifer, think they need to fix the OL first.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:26 PM
Mallet will never make it as a starter in the NFL. Poor accuracy, maybe more of a statue than drew bledsoe, only knows how to throw the ball 100MPH. career backup…like Matt Cassel should be
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:28 PM
Barkley is about as bad as Gabbert and Locker. Tannehill and Weeden are heads above Barkley. Ponder is slightly better than the next overrated USC QB
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:28 PM
Anyone else ever flip to those games on NBC Sports and see if you can hear a name you recognize within five minutes? Last time revealed former Iowa legend Drew Tate starting in the great white north
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:28 PM
But you spelled McGloin wrong.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:28 PM
Does he play OL, DL, DB or TE? Oh…he doesn’t? No thanks.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:28 PM
I would say OL, RB, and OLB because I think Nick Perry is going to be mediocre at best.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:29 PM
Quick question for people in the know with that trade value system. Would the Lions trading the number 5 pick for St. Louis’ 16 and 21 overall picks be reasonable?
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:29 PM
Did somebody say poor man’s Von Miller?
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:29 PM
I son’t see the Vikings going with WR in the first round. they drafted 2 WR’s from Arkansas last year, Childs didn’t play a down this year because of a destroyed knee, and Wright looked decent enough in the last game of the year when they gave him some of the touches normally reserved for Harvin. the WR is a weak spot for sure, but I would much prefer them to go defense with the first pick.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:29 PM
something something 12 draft picks
/feeling lazy today
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:29 PM
AP- what are your specific knocks on Barkley? I’m not a member of his fan club, but not nearly as sour on him as you
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:30 PM
Raiders are likely (hopefully) ditching the ZBS after firing most of their offensive staff…could see them taking an OT if they are revamping.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:30 PM
You know, if Scott Tolzien can stick on an NFL roster for two years a guy with a year of BOB’s coaching under his belt could be the type of player you see coming into a preseason game and struggle to remember where you know the name from
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:30 PM
They’d get more than that back for the 5th pick I’d think.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:30 PM
If Mayhew doesn’t think there is a can’t-miss DB or LB to take in the top ten, then sure.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:30 PM
24, really?
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:32 PM
average arm strength, gets flustered when pocket breaks down. I saw an average Syracuse defense knock the shit out him this year. Lee bailed him out on a few screen passes he took for big gains.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:32 PM
Literally the first person to comment mentioned it.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:32 PM
Indy could also use an offensive lineman
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:33 PM
If the Lions could also get a 2nd or 3rd I would do this for sure.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:33 PM
Ryan Nassib, syracuse QB. 2nd round, book it.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:33 PM
best part about mock draft comments here vs. twitter?
at least i dont get any “your” an idiot
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:33 PM
I just read today that Jake Matthews is highly unlikely to declare this year. And mock drafts are useless with the amount of trade activity due to the rookie contact restrictions in place now.
/Eagles are gonna trade down to piss off the fanbase
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:33 PM
I’m fine with you dropping a QB where it doesn’t make sense, just for the hell of it. It’s your site, do what you want. But thinking Mallett is going anywhere is insane, IMO, unless the Pats are getting a 1 back (which would be insane by the team who offers it). Brady is getting old, and they dropped Hoyer to carry two QBs instead. Why would anyone pay 1st round value for a guy who may or may not be any good (really not much to judge Mallett by). He just doesn’t have the value to other teams, that he does to BB.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:34 PM
their the idiots. your the smart one.
/twitter grammar
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:34 PM
I was at that Syracuse game FWIW. I like Nassib. Disagree on the arm strength, but the lack of mobility is concerning for sure
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:34 PM
Glass houses, stones, etc.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:35 PM
He’s less physically talented than the growing list of USC busts that came before him, which fair or not counts against him.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:35 PM
I haven seen a FA pool this bad in a while, so yeah GMs can’t fuck up the draft.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:36 PM
Fuck the haters on Mock Drafts, by the way. These things are totally useless and totally awesome.
Agreed. My favorite posts.
Greg Roman going to turnaround Weeden. Browns going either elite secondary or somebody that can get to the QB.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:36 PM
I wonder if there are any QBs in the 2014 worth hoping for in Buffalo. I don’t want Fitzpatrick there anymore but ill deal with one final season. Just need a coach who will give the ball to CJ Spiller 20 times EVERY DAMN GAME OF THE YEAR
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:37 PM
Someone will overpay Bowe, Jennings or Welker.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:37 PM
wide receiver, maybe guard or right tackle
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:37 PM
they definitely need someone to play along side Joe Haden and a defensive end.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:37 PM
I can’t understand the USC qb argument. Any GM who uses that rationale should be fired. More talented than Leinart by miles. Similar talent to Carson and Sanchez IMO.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:38 PM
So, if this does happen, and the kid shows up 20lbs over optimal desired weight…
…does he get called “Fat Chance”?
/got the can’t-help-its
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:38 PM
I really like that Matt Elam dude.
/Team trade down
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:38 PM
I feel certain Joeckel is going #1
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:39 PM
Man, Scouser, that is depressing. I don’t like any of the draft QBs either, at least not to start right away and have any success. It guarantees a guy like Locker, who flashes good but has fatal accuracy flaws, will get another year or two. Same with Ponder, whom I’m a lot higher on than most, I think.
I wonder what the value of Alex Smith is right now… he was playing well this year, at least on paper.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:39 PM
AP – Nassib goes to wHOM?
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:39 PM
I’d be happy with ATL taking Gio Bernard late in the first round. He won’t be there late in the second, so the pick would make sense as I assume a stud OL, DL or DB won’t be there in the high 20s, low 30s.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:39 PM
How are the tiebreakers determined for draft picks? (If WAS, CIN, and MIN all lose this weekend as you predicted, they are all 10-6.) WAS beat MIN, but lost to CIN. MIN and CIN did not play.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:39 PM
I believe the Dolphins have money to burn and Davone Bess as their #1…my best guess is Jennings going there to reunite with Philbin
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:39 PM
his accuracy rate his final year at Arkansas is comparable to anyone in the NFL, and that was in college. mobility is probably an issue, but it’s not like Brady or Rodgers are exactly swift of foot. as far as throwing the ball 100 mph goes, that can probably be fixed.
not saying he is or ever will be a stud NFL QB, but when guys like Sanchez, Skelton and Gabbard have all started games, it’s pretty hard to say Mallett will be a career backup.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:39 PM
Carson is much better than any other USC QB in the past 10 years. Barkley has better arm strength than Sanchez but less mobility.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:39 PM
Na, he’ll get the ironic Slim Chance
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:40 PM
why?
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:40 PM
arkbadger, Aaron Rogers is one of the most mobile QBs in the league.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:40 PM
along those lines, wasn’t the “Tedford QB” label one of the reasons Rodgers fell so far in 2005? granted, I don’t think Barkley is Rodgers, but there’s still precedent there.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:40 PM
Carson Palmer was much more physically talented than Sanchez or Barkley coming out of school. He also isn’t really a bust even if he’s no HOFer. Barkley and Sanchez do seem pretty even in terms of talent
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:40 PM
If he comes out and their isn’t a clear cut QB leader I think you’re right.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:41 PM
Strength of schedule I believe, like how because KC went 2-14 against an even sorrier collection of competition than Jacksonville did they get the honor
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:41 PM
Because football is about paying people to protect the QB from those who want to kill him.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:41 PM
Weeden is another. Flashed good at times, looked like a rookie others. It’d be crazy to take a QB to develop next to him though. Build around and wait for a QB-rich draft if he sucks.
Oh yeah, and don’t unnecessarily extend him just for the fuck of it
/Sanchez’d
//Fitzpatrick’d
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:41 PM
The strength of the 1st round is the OL and DTs, which sadly the Browns don’t need.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:42 PM
In a draft with weak QBs, you always draft the best OL/DL you can get. See 2006 and 2008 drafts.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:42 PM
Anyone have a link to a site that shows where each team picks throughout the entire 2013 draft?
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:42 PM
JMac, not sure where Nassib is going. He’ll actually go 3rd round unless someone gets desperate and thinks he can be a starting QB. He needs a year or two of seasoning before he could even possibly start a few games. Great arm, just work on a couple of tiny mechanical issues and pocket presence. if Ryan Fitzpatrick had Nassib’s arm, bills fans would be taking their pants off.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:42 PM
In a move similar to Jacksonville going after Tebow with the exception of Nassib could actually contribute in the next ten years: Buffalo!
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:42 PM
Better not let TBL see that shit in these parts. He runs a tight grammatically-correct ship here.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:42 PM
Barkley’s a smarter guy than Carson, so he’s got that going for him. Both laughably immobile, but I like Bark’s arm more than you do. The play calling this year was a massive problem
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:43 PM
There’s still something to that, if Rodgers had been pressed into duty those first two seasons it would have been a disaster…McCarthy & Friends had to put in a lot of work on him before it started to click
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:43 PM
LOL. Colin Kapernick wins a SB in his 2nd season, 1st as a starter and they will spend a 1st round draft pick on his back up? This is in no way what the Patriots did with Mallet, who was a 3rd round pick and they had 2 that year. Quite frankly it seems like you wanted to shoe horn Tajh Boyd in the 1st round, but couldn’t find a logical spot. At least if/when he goes in the 1st, you can say you called it.
Those two guys play very different positions AND have backups draft in the 1st & 2nd round respectively on the roster. Though I could see a pass rushing OLB if a special one fell.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:44 PM
I feel certain Joeckel is going #1
why?
Highest floor, glamour position (at least in the draft), lack of obvious superstar skill players.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:44 PM
Was waiting for someone to point that out. Never reading any comment I post bites me in that ass at least 5 times a day.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:44 PM
I can guarantee one thing…The Giants will not draft a linebacker in the first round. Haven’t drafted one since Carl Banks in 1984.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:44 PM
Bills first round need is a LB and DB. Stefan Gilmore is a solid CB but the Bills need another one. They can’t go another season with Leodis McKelvin being a starting CB. They also need to get a tall, strong WR in later rounds. Enough of this small TJ Graham, roscoe Parrish, type WRs who get crushed.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:44 PM
Better not let TBL see that shit in these parts. He runs a tight grammatically-correct ship here.
You just don’t know how to not antagonize him do you.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:44 PM
shhhhh..don’t tell the secret.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:45 PM
I wonder if this is the year the Chiefs actually draft a QB that will play for them.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:45 PM
Jamarcus Russell and Brady Quinn accept your compliments from 2007.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:47 PM
if a team like Denver drafted Barret Jones..well, just pencil them in for division titles as long as Manning is there.

Any chance a team may be interested in trading for Pryor?

January 2nd, 2013 at 4:48 PM
He hasn’t played enough to have trade value right now. You’d only be trading on hope.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:48 PM
Funny story about Jamarcus: he wasn’t even a desperation pick. He really was just rated that highly by a lot of people. There were some that didn’t like him but it’s not like that was a reach by the Raiders. Dude just didn’t like football enough to make it work.

You don’t have that kind of pull around here until you re-institute Glorious
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:50 PM
Kind of a weird draft that year. Got ripped apart (here) because no one contributed right away. But they have at least an above-average backup QB out of it, plus a 1200 yard rusher in Ridley, a speedster in Vereen and their starting LT (Solder). Plus a versatile backup OL in Cannon, and IR-as-I Dowling.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:50 PM
All of this. Browns would have jumped on him at #2 had the Raiders passed.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:50 PM
Any chance a team may be interested in trading for Pryor?
Man did that guy sail a lot of passes on Sunday. He needs a lot of help to be a starter. He got away with a lot of bad throws. I was excited to see him play, honestly, and I do not like him as an NFL player at all right now.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:50 PM

He got paid and then realized that his talent wasn’t going to be enough to carry him through. So he stopped trying, in every way. He didn’t have the makeup to be an NFL player. It was kind of hard to see that until he actually got there and failed miserably though.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:51 PM
You better hope they don’t hire Whisenhunt then. If he’s your coach be prepared to watch Fitzpatrick 40-50 times a game and run spiller up the middle on the draw out of shotgun on obvious running downs.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:51 PM
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:51 PM
Terrelle Pryor would be better suited coming of the bench for the Knicks right now

January 2nd, 2013 at 4:52 PM
crap. Basically… Denver can cakewalk to division titles no matter whom they pick, as long as the other teams keep playing those QBs
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:52 PM
How has he been? He was the player that was discovered to have cancer during the combine medical check right?
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:52 PM
Jamarcus wasn’t even bad in his second season. Then he blew up to like 300 pounds before his 3rd year and, oh, well. A couple of million bucks goes a long way in Mobile.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:53 PM
sctrojans, he and JR can compare tats
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:53 PM
Well, Al Davis was drafting first overall in that draft. If it were any other owner/GM, Calvin, AP or Joe Thomas is the easy first overall pick.

I heard he got the tree leprechaun to be the entertainment at this birthday one year.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:54 PM
I was always confused by the love because all I heard for 2.5 years was how inconsistent he was and maybe they should replace him at LSU… then he has one good game against a shitty defense and he’s the #1 pick. I know physical attributes have a lot to do with that, but I just never liked him.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:55 PM
OT – i fully expect Z-Bo and Marc Gasol to each go for 20 and 10 tonight against the Celtics. Not surprised if Randolph goes for 30 and 20
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:55 PM
15. New Orleans Saints 7-9 – Matt Elam, S, Florida.
As good as Elam is, the Saints will not take a safety in the first round. Too much money tied up in Harper’s ridiculous extension (he couldn’t cover an Offensive Tackle at this point), and Malcolm Jenkins actually played relatively well before being placed on IR.
Problem with Saints D this year is they had personnel for a man cover, blitzing scheme and Spags instituted a predominantly zone coverage, four man rush scheme and as a result, they got ZERO pressure on the QB. Saints need someone who can rush the QB and/or better DTs to stuff the run. A pass-rushing OLB would be ideal!
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:55 PM
remember when Quinn kept falling in the first round and everyone was like, “HOW CAN THIS BE HAPPENING?”
god the draft can be great sometimes.

Ugh, I hate this. Marcus Lattimore would be a mid- to late-first rounder with healthy legs. He doesn’t have that much speed to run the way he does and get drafted highly. If he’s got anything comparable to McGahee’s quickness and speed I’ve never seen it.

Found the last two of these and realized I managed to get in a dig at Frank Zombo both times without it being intentional…if I get the honor of picking for the Packers again remind me to bring him up for tradition’s sake
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:57 PM
my bad, I was trying to do two things at once. either way, it’s not like Mallett took a ton of sacks when he was in college. he is in no way mobile, but he has pretty decent awareness in the pocket. I’m not saying he is a 10 year starter in the league, but there are a whole lot worse options out there, someone will take a flier on him at some point.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:58 PM
Oh, maybe TBL though Mallet went earlier because Spencer picked him in the 1st round.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:58 PM
you may be right. I just remember hearing reports from scouts during training camp that Mallett was disappointing
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:58 PM
Best chance of happening:
A) Lattimore goes in top 45 picks
B) 49ers win a SB, then trade their backup for a 2nd rounder, so they can use a 1st to draft an unproven backup
C) Cleveland stretches for a QB in 2012, then gives up in 2013 for another QB high in a draft with no great QB prospects
D) Patriots are granted 7 picks, so they have 12 in the 2013 draft, then trade down as always, and trade an unproven backup QB they like
/AP ain’t so crazy

Dude just didn’t like football as much as codeine to make it work.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:58 PM
I wouldn’t be shocked if Tyler Wilson is the first QB taken this year. Smith is the heavy favorite, but Wilson can sling it and take a hit.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:58 PM
I’d say two or three. If they draft Joeckel and put him at RT with Peters at LT, it allows Herremans to move back to LG. I also think a lot of the personnel they had did not fit Mudd’s schemes.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:58 PM
I definitely want in on another commenter draft. I still don’t have an allegiance, though, so if I end up drafting for the Cardinals again, so be it.
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:59 PM
whatever it takes for King Dunlap to not be a starter
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:00 PM
Geno Smith will get to the NFL and find out that he can play on teams that actually coach defense.
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:01 PM
Being a fan of Oklahoma and the Raiders, I wanted Peterson. I remember coming up to the draft there was not a lot of buzz about Peterson in the top 5…too many people worried about his injury history.
Raiders could have thrown darts at a board from the top 15 that year, and would have had a pretty good chance of hitting on “Pro-Bowler” to “Hall-of-Famer”
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:01 PM
Please, God…no.
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:01 PM
This will never happen again. Thankfully.
And looking back at the first commenter draft, Hawkeye and I got the Bears and Eagles picks and had they been reversed (Carimi to the Bears, Watkins to the Eagles) it would have been correct.
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:02 PM
I can’t imagine he’s leaving (nobody at Clemson thinks there’s any chance)…but if he does, I feel sorry for the team that drafts him. Can’t see the guy ever starting a game in the NFL.
After his piss-poor performance in the Music City Bowl, I’d doubt that Glennon is going to be a 1st rounder, but it’s certainly much more realistic than Boyd as a 1st rounder.
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:02 PM
Anyone have a link to a site that shows where each team picks throughout the entire 2013 draft?
Don’t playoffs need to end first?
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:03 PM
many of the retards that I call Bills fans think that Mike Glennon can be the savior. I hate the fanbase
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:03 PM
I refuse to understand why there’s no QB to draft as high as #1, but #6 is fine. He’s either good or not. No one will ever look back at a successful QB taken #8th and think it would have been a better pick if they had gotten him at 13.
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:03 PM
PONDER. ALL HE DOES. WIN FOOTBALL GAMES.
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:03 PM

January 2nd, 2013 at 5:05 PM
i wouldn’t bet on the celtics at all this season unless they are playing charlotte or washington.
/FREE COUSINS! BRING HIM TO BOSTON!
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:05 PM
The 2007 draft is probably one of the best in terms of All-Pros and eventual HoFers. Thomas, Megatron, AP, Revis, Timmons, Wills, Lynch, Staley, Weddle, Woodley.
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:05 PM
Jay V – i ask because McKelvin is a FA and someone is bound to overpay him. He can’t play DB well at all so the Bills don’t want to pay him that kind of contract to just be a special teams player
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:06 PM
as much as i enjoy watching seattle, it still burns me to see Lynch play well after quitting on Buffalo
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:06 PM
oh I don’t doubt it. sitting behind Brady a couple years surely had to help. I don’t really care either way about him other than he is a former Razorback, but someone should at least give him a shot.
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:06 PM
I liked how the commissioner eventually showed pity on him and hid the whole family away from the cameras
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:07 PM
I think Ace has an NFL future for sure, but I can’t see him leaving early to be a 5th round pick.

January 2nd, 2013 at 5:08 PM
I think he will impress at the combine. dude drew about the worst card possible this year with all the bullshit going on at Arkansas, combined with an awful OL, a ton of injuries and only 1 good WR to throw too.

Hard to really evaluate because of the injuries, but he played pretty well. He had some drops, and he had the offensive PI fiascos in the GB game, but I think he showed some signs that he’s going to be a pretty damn good WR in this league. I would say that Blackmon & Hilton were only rookies who were significantly better.
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:16 PM
No thank you. Dalton has issues getting the ball to shorter WRs, and once Sanu comes back from injury, WR will not be a position of need. Besides, there’s plenty of speed guys from smaller schools (a la TY Hilton and Antonio Brown) out there for the taking in the 3rd round+ every year
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:17 PM

he looks the part and made some key catches. also some key drops.
i think it’s good for him to on a team with marshall. need some speed to stretch the d. mike wallace?
hester will be gone most likely. is that stanford TE available? he looked good yesterday
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:18 PM
He can be like a Percy Harvin…line him up in the backfield.
If your QB has issues getting the ball to shorter WRs, get a new QB.

I would say that Blackmon & Hilton were only rookies who were significantly better.
Josh Gordon disagrees.
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:22 PM
These things happen when you’re unable to get separation which I think is a problem of his currently…receivers develop slower than other positions normally though so it’s possible he’ll improve
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:22 PM
One day Lisk asked for a volunteer to organize the commenter draft. I offered to take names. Some people weren’t here that day and couldn’t get their favorite.
We could probably do two of them. I’ll take names in a pro draft next few weeks.

January 2nd, 2013 at 5:23 PM
He’s eligible. And really good
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:25 PM
He’s an upgrade over our last QB, who had issues getting the ball to non-cornerbacks and safeties.
/Thanks for the draft picks though.

Jay V we’ll see. Gordon didnt even have a training camp and then played the bulk of the year as a #1 with no help and almost had the best rookie WR stats. I think he has more upside but we’ll see. Lot will depend on who they get as coach here in CLE.

I can’t take any mock draft seriously that has Geno Smith going in the first round. He is a 3rd round pick at best!
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:44 PM
Well at least 2 of his 3 teams actually are likely to pick a QB.
Still not sure Cleveland does, depending who comes in though.
January 2nd, 2013 at 6:01 PM
Hey, that guy has Joeckel going #1, too! I’m a super genius!
January 2nd, 2013 at 6:02 PM
Wow, that’s an interesting one you linked there, TBL.
January 2nd, 2013 at 8:25 PM
The yahoo mock this morning (inexplicably) had Kenny Vaccaro going fifth to the Lions. He’s not in your first round. Quite a disparity.
January 2nd, 2013 at 9:23 PM
1. Raiders – Tyler Bray, QB, Tennessee. I’ve been hyping Bray since December. The junior is 6-foot-6 and missed 4 games due to injury last year. I think he’ll play his way to be the top pick in the draft. Others like Logan Thomas of Virginia Tech (I don’t think he’ll come out early), but as a passer, I like Bray much more.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:50 PM
such a letdown this year.
He started off with that dumb bottle-throwing incident.
Then, his #1 WR got kicked off the team.
Then, he just sucked, despite having so many players back on that offense.
Talent is still there, i thought the head would be, too.
January 3rd, 2013 at 3:51 PM
i had Vaccaro in my last mock. Didn’t make the cut this time. We can make a friendly wager on him going “top 5.” I’m confident that ain’t happening. I wouldn’t take him before Elam.
January 3rd, 2013 at 7:50 PM
If the Bears got Eifert I’d be pretty ecstatic.
January 5th, 2013 at 2:40 PM
Amazing how the “analysts” still don’t realize how young the Ravens defense is. Ellerbe,Webb,Williams,Kruger,McPhee,Cody,Jones, etc. Need more help at LB and OL but not a fading team. Laughable
January 6th, 2013 at 8:47 PM
Cowboys will take a lineman, best available either side, as well as multiple O line picks later on, and yeah maybe a QB later on
