“You Guys Don’t Even Deserve To Be Here:” Orange Bowl Rep to Northern Illinois

Northern Illinois was not the Orange Bowl’s first choice combatant. According to Bruce Feldman, an Orange Bowl rep made that explicit. He recounts the following exchange.

“You guys [NIU] don’t even deserve to be here,” the Orange Bowl rep said to the NIU staffer. “We didn’t even want you here.”
According to a source, the exchange took place the other night in a hospitality suite. The Orange Bowl rep had compared NIU to Duke. The NIU rep responded by pointing out that the Huskies, who are riding a 12-game winning streak, have been to bowl games in five consecutive seasons. The conversation escalated from there, the source says.

If the BCS Bowls were not corrupt, there would have been no need for the convoluted anti-corruption rules that forced them to take Northern Illinois. Hoisted with their own petard.

Genius move by the coach, though. You can’t lie about something the other team said in this day and age, so just pin it on an anonymous “bowl executive”, and you can generate just as much “nobody believes in us”.

The guy is right. They don’t belong there. As an FSU fan I’m bummed we have to play these scrubs. If we win, we get no respect because it’s NIU. If we lose, we’ll catch nothing but shit from everyone. Oklahoma or Georgia would’ve been a much better game. Fuck the BCS.

If these idiots runnings these bowls don’t want these teams, then sign on for a 12- or 16-team playoff and have them play in teh first round. They will be beaten and the marquee matchups (semifinals, finals) can be played in the BCS Bowls. Problem solved.
