Norv Turner and A.J. Smith Are Now Officially Done in San Diego [Update: Ken Whisenhunt Also Fired in Arizona]
The San Diego Chargers team website has announced that General Manager A.J. Smith and head coach Norv Turner will not return next year. Philip Rivers wants you to know that Norv Turner did not really get a fair shake in San Diego.
[EARLIER: Lovie Smith fired as coach of the Bears.]
In other news, Turner took over a team in 2007 that had finished 14-2 the previous season. He was in San Diego for six years, and the team perpetually underachieved, missing the playoffs each of the last three years despite entering as favorites until Manning joined the division this year.
[EARLIER: Pat Shurmur fired as coach of the Browns.]
It’s fitting that on a day when a coach got fired while finishing 10-6 (Lovie Smith) after his team started 7-1 but missed the playoffs, the last coach to pull that off also got fired–twelve more seasons of coaching later.
Norv Turner has four playoff appearances in fifteen years as a head coach, and ranks 23rd all-time in games coached. He is the only coach in the top 30 to have a losing record. I agree with Rivers, though. Turner should get a fairer shake. He should finish top ten in games coached all time if there is any justice in this world.
UPDATE: Meanwhile, a coach who has made a Super Bowl appearance, Ken Whisenhunt, was also let go in Arizona when his offense set back football for a century.

December 31st, 2012 at 1:29 PM
There are gonna be some college coaches going to the NFL, right?
December 31st, 2012 at 1:29 PM
So far…
PHI, KC, SD, BUF, CLE, CHI, AZ, CAR have fired coaches
SD, CLE, NYJ, JAX, AZ have fired GMs.
That’s half (10/20) teams that missed the playoffs making a change. Seems high, but also may bode well for guys like Reid/Norv/Lovie to get jobs again quick.

Chip Kelly will prob pull a Pete Carroll….staying a step ahead of the posse….

I’m pretty surprised by Whis’s firing. All signs indicated he would be afforded the opportunity to stay with the condition that he relinquish some control over personnel decisions. My guess is he was unwilling to let go of that control. I’d be shocked if they didn’t promote Horton to HC immediately and bring in a strong OC to run the offense.

Has Ron Rivera been canned?

Not confirmed yet but said to be coming

I’d like to see Lisk do a post on success of teams who hire college coaches versus hiring an NFL assistant. I have to to believe those teams who hire from the assistant pool have more success.

Not that it would be surprising – writing was on the wall when the GM Hurney got fired earlier in the season. Rivera was Hurney’s guy and Jerry Richardson wasn’t particularly thrilled when Hurney hired Rivera.
December 31st, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Wonder how many interviews Perry Fewell gets without getting hired by any of the teams. 6?
December 31st, 2012 at 1:41 PM
Wait, Rivera got fired?
December 31st, 2012 at 1:41 PM
Rivera accepted a position at Yahoo! Finance?
December 31st, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Was Rivera was traded for Yunel Escobar?
December 31st, 2012 at 1:48 PM
Kelly is an actual cheater, so the NCAA probably won’t punish him. They only punish non-cheaters.
Why Detroit isn’t pursuing Saban I’ll never know.
Oh, I forgot, their owner is a clueless fossil. That’s why.
December 31st, 2012 at 1:49 PM
Saban to Dallas, with Norv returning as OC….

December 31st, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Did he get fired by the UFL?
December 31st, 2012 at 1:55 PM
i think so. but fucking rich kotite got two head coaching jobs.
Kotite did win a playoff game with the Eagles. Buddy Ryan didn’t.
December 31st, 2012 at 2:04 PM
Norval to the Giants as OC

I already wasted my best Jim Fassell joke earlier today, but no.
This is one bloodbath of a whatever kinda monday this is. I’m calling it bloodbath monday.

I am tempted to place a curse on you for this suggestion.

Norv is going to solve everybody’s problems this offseason.

You need to work “-gate” in there somewhere for it to really catch on
December 31st, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Oh man, that would be all kinds of awesome. but won’t happen unless Mara orders it. Coughlin will fight for every single assistant, no matter the position, until Mara steps in. Happened with Hufanagel and Sheridan. And somehow, Tom Quinn is still the ST coach.

You can’t rename NFL Head Coach Silly Season. Come on. Behave, like a grownup.
December 31st, 2012 at 2:09 PM
It was a good one.
I only really give a crap where Andy Reid and Whisenhunt end up. The rest of these guys, who cares. For some reason I think Norv ends up at Carolina as HC.
December 31st, 2012 at 2:10 PM
Ron Rivera is in DC helping negotiate the Fiscal Cliff deal?
/new meme’d?
December 31st, 2012 at 2:10 PM
As someone who hates the Carolina Panthers, oh my god please yes.
December 31st, 2012 at 2:10 PM
… wow looks like someone picking at the end of the first round is going to have a bust on their hands.
December 31st, 2012 at 2:11 PM
The corpse of Jack Kent Cooke, the beginning of the Snyder era, Al Davis, and AJ Smith. I would think it is safe to say that Norv hasn’t exactly had the greatest support from up top in his HC ventures. Come to Big Blue Norv, where we offer the best in stability.

Too busy giving out that dreaded vote of confidence to everyone responsible for a 4-12 season.
December 31st, 2012 at 2:12 PM
TN’s coach going to get axed too?

TN’s coach going to get axed too?
no, he’s not. He was reported to be safe. Now, he may need to be fired, but it’s very difficult to have a quick trigger finger on your own Hall of Fame player.

Nothing says “productive CBA negotiations” like sending the recipient of the worst contract in sports history to the meeting to negotiate.
December 31st, 2012 at 2:23 PM
Goddell made TP and Jim Tressel pay the for the NCAA penalties before coming to the NFL. Wonder if Kelly would have to do the same? Even more interesting would be if the sanctions came down after Kelly was hired by an NFL team.

Stability: 9-7 seasons! Sometimes it wins the division, sometimes it doesn’t.

speaking of hair, that Hannah Storm story about losing her hair in a grill explosion made me laugh for some terrible reason. Still drunk w happiness over Lovie getting canned I guess.

December 31st, 2012 at 3:10 PM
An old Tennessee footbaw coach, Bill Battle, once said “class is, when they’re runnin’ you out of town, make it look like you’re leading a parade”.
The guy knows football, especially offense. $3M still obligated to him from the Bolts. He’ll be alright.
Fare thee well, Norval.

you already got your NFL re-tread lightning in a bottle for the decade

Am i crazy or was today the first time anyone heard about this fire. I can’t remember any blogs talking about it until today.

Hadn’t heard. Googled her. She is married to impostor Jim Nantz apparently

This Sun Bowl is terrible. GT is a bad team and USC is, well, a bad team who doesn’t want to be there. Pathetic effort.
December 31st, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Did anyone else see in the AP story that Storm’s daughter is also named Hannah?
