Lovie Smith Fired as Head Coach of Chicago Bears
Lovie Smith is the first firing of Black Monday that was not a foregone conclusion as the season concluded. The Bears missed out on the playoffs when Minnesota beat Green Bay on a late field goal, and today, Lovie Smith is out.
In some ways, not surprising, because Lovie has been in Chicago for nine years, and has now missed the playoffs in five of the last six. The 10-6 record might have bought him some time, but he was working with a new GM likely looking for a reason to start with his own guy.

They fired the black man?
December 31st, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Damn. All because Christian Ponder pulled that 3rd and 11 out of his ass huh?
December 31st, 2012 at 11:09 AM
He had a good run though.

We now have our token Rooney Rule coaching candidate that everyone will interview and no one will hire!

There is a God!
/prob not

Chan Gailey is furious that he doesn’t get his own post.
December 31st, 2012 at 11:15 AM
I’d still have him as a DC.
December 31st, 2012 at 11:16 AM
You think Leslie Frazer would have gotten an opportunity without the Rooney Rule?
December 31st, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Yes, because 1, he was already here and 2, he works cheap. Same way Tice was handed the keys.
December 31st, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Yes

He got his own comment. That counts.

There’s some guys that should only be coordinators: Norv and Lovie, for instance.
December 31st, 2012 at 11:31 AM
At least Lovie got a pretty average team to the Super Bowl and the NFC Championship. That’s something

Mike Silver should do an analysis on retention rate of black coaches vs. white coaches. Based on what they’ve done.

Fuck that Cornball brotha

This.

I think firing Lovie is a mistake, but maybe Emery has someone in mind who would be a better fit for the offense like the Broncos OC
December 31st, 2012 at 11:43 AM
my sources tell me bill cowher will be a major candidate.
December 31st, 2012 at 11:44 AM
green bay will miss him
December 31st, 2012 at 11:44 AM
you could probably add Romeo to that list as well

Hopefully Lovie goes out guns blazing, mentioning in his final media interview how he was given an offensive line that has ranked in the bottom 5 since John Tait retired 4 years ago, and without a major overhaul in that area, something that’s been begged for by anyone who has watched this team for years now, no HC they bring in to replace him will be able to make this an elite team. But my guess is he’ll be graceful, smile, thank all of those who have been supportive, and wish the team good luck in the future.

It’s close but I think only the final play of the Seattle game resulted in more cursing. Casey Hayward has been brilliant all year, but he got burned on that one.
On the bright side of things it was nice to see Mason hit from 50+.

Him, yes. Lovie, maybe not. Raheem Morris, not for years yet.
Just think of the horrible white retreads and/or unready nepotism Jrs that have been replaced by these guys.
One thing, though, black dude. You can’t call the plays. That’s a white man’s exclusive dominion. Sorry about that. It’s just too complicated, like middle linebacker or quarterback.

just a strange play. The nearside defender who was running with that guy bit up, I think because he assumed Ponder was going to check it down to Peterson, but on the other side of the field. This guy wanted to be the guy Peterson bowled over, but he hoped to be pounded into the ground before the sticks, so help could come.
He just basically sat down, and that receiver went in behind him. The receiver might have been a guy who used to be terrible in Atlanta. I can’t really be sure.

Interesting choice by Hayward to cover nobody in the flat rather than trail Jenkins. Then there was the foolish Tramon Williams hands to the face play. Packer secondary is concerning

luckily Lovie will land on his feet and score a Nyquil deal.

“The receiver might have been a guy who used to be terrible in Atlanta. I can’t really be sure.”
Same Holy Buckeye receiver that burned the Bears in Atlanta at the end of the game a few years ago….
December 31st, 2012 at 12:26 PM
I guess he wasn’t ‘black enough’ for them.
December 31st, 2012 at 12:28 PM
Lovie is still sitting in the GM’s office, staring straight ahead after being fired. Everyone else went to lunch, he’s still there, staring.
December 31st, 2012 at 12:31 PM
My sources tell me Bill Cowher will be a hilarious disaster.
December 31st, 2012 at 12:34 PM
well-played Liquor….
December 31st, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Lovie did his best to turn shit into shinola with that offense and that overrated organization. He’ll be picked up pretty quickly with another team that will have the decency to supply him with at least a decent offensive line

“Allegedly Bears looking at Denver Coordinator”
Let’s see….work with Peyton Manning and an upcoming team vs working with Cutler and inheriting a Jerry Angelo/Ted Phillips mess that will take years to clean up….touch choice….
December 31st, 2012 at 12:44 PM
jerry angelo mostly to blame. change is good, tho unfortunately, cutler will now get his fourth OC in what, five years?
December 31st, 2012 at 12:48 PM
You’re still stuck with Tice for now, guys. Bwahahahaha
December 31st, 2012 at 12:49 PM
I really don’t think Cutler is the answer in Chicago. Granted, his O-line blows, but I just don’t think he is the guy.
December 31st, 2012 at 12:52 PM
ah, the Jason Campbell defense.
December 31st, 2012 at 12:55 PM

ah, the Jason Campbell defense.
there’s no doubt he’s got flaws, but things out of his control like OC change, having to wait for plays to get to him from the sideline, bad drafting have not helped. yes there are other QBs who have had success despite hardships
December 31st, 2012 at 12:57 PM
Cutler’s paid and expected to be one of those “other QBs.” I don’t think it’s happening with him.

agree that you would rather have ponder
December 31st, 2012 at 1:05 PM
“Hey, you’re Jay Cutler! My dad says you kind of suck but could be good some day.”
December 31st, 2012 at 1:08 PM
ESPN’s incredibly accurate QBR has Ponder ranked ahead of Cutler this year, btw.
December 31st, 2012 at 1:10 PM
That’s pretty dumb. I would absolutely rather have Cutler and a ton of other guys. But not Flacco.

Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes.
