Black Monday Begins: Pat Shurmur Fired, Gene Smith and Mike Tannenbaum Fired as General Managers
Black Monday has begun with news that Cleveland’s head coach and one of its former head coach have both been fired. Pat Shurmur is out in Cleveland, along with GM Tom Heckert, according to Jay Glazer. Not an unsurprising move at all considering that the front office which hired Shurmur is gone. Romeo Crennel is also reportedly out in Kansas City, though no official announcement has come. According to Adam Schefter, Scott Pioli is safe, for now. (more on that later, I’m sure).
Mike Tannenbaum has been fired as Jets GM by Woody Johnson, but head coach Rex Ryan is safe. The Chiefs and Jets should totally get together, guys. One has a coach but not a GM, and the other has a GM, and is replacing another coach under that GM, which will likely lead to a loud fan revolt if the reports are true.
Finally, Gene Smith is out as GM in Jacksonville, a completely unsurprising move since the Jaguars tied the Chiefs for worst record in the league and he drafted a punter in the same round as Russell Wilson last year.

Someone killed himself rather than work for Pioli, and he’s still got a job?
December 31st, 2012 at 9:40 AM
Thank you Shad Khan. Way too many questionable decisions made during the Gene Smith era.

How in the hell can the Jets and Cheifs retain anyone? They need to nuke both organizations and start all over again.

This feels a lot like election night. I’m cool with sittin’ in front of the telly waiting for more returns.
And, of course results from the west coast will come in much later. Lookin’ at you, San Diego.

I don’t understand how Pioli remains employed as a football GM. Amazing.

Whoa, whoa. Whoa. It’s Benjamin Franklin Rodriguez has the highest WAR evah! Monday, please.
December 31st, 2012 at 9:52 AM
So far, no big surprises. Most of the ones fired/to be fired we’re seen coming a month away or so.
December 31st, 2012 at 9:53 AM
Schefter also says Whisenhunt is meeting with the Cards team president on Monday. If he gets canned, he’s the best HC/OC candidate out there besides maybe Andy Reid.

Black Monday, for those of you not familiar with the soccer term, means the busy day after the final regular season game where coaches and management are fired or step down. Or as it is known in the electric light-less Ann Arbor night of Duffy’s mind, NFL Coaching Silly Season.

So what’s it gonna take to get Norv in as the Steelers OC?
December 31st, 2012 at 9:59 AM
jesus…him and lebeau look way too similar in both appearance and career for tihs to happen. there’d be mass confusion.

There is some speculation that Reid could take a year off before returning to coach.
And I don’t think Reid would ever be an offensive coordinator after the role he filled on the Eagles. He was never a coordinator at any level before taking the Eagles job. He’d have to be the head guy or nothing, I would think.

Lot of Steeler fans want Whiz back as OC.
I laugh, though, as the much-maligned Bruce Arians just coached the Colts into the playoffs. Todd Haley is not Chuckstrong.

My sources say Rod Graves is being demoted, and Steve Keim promoted to GM in AZ. Whis will be offered the opportunity to stay with the condition that he relinquishes some control over personnel decisions. Grimm (assistant HC) and Mike Miller (OC) are out. Basically Keim will be asking Whis to bring in an OC who will actually have control of the offense. Otherwise, bye bye Whis and Horton to HC.

Reid officially fired per NFL Network.

NFL Coaching Silly Season.
Andy Reid to be the Jets’ GM!!
December 31st, 2012 at 10:10 AM
Looks like Mularkey’s sticking around as HC though
December 31st, 2012 at 10:12 AM
Russ Grimm is an interesting name. For as many bad offensive lines that are out there in football, I imagine if Grimm wanted to be just a position coach again, he’d probably have no shortage of offers.

CBS saying Gruden will interview for HC jobs.
Bears would be best spot for him with QB ready for real coaching.
/F Off Lovie.
December 31st, 2012 at 10:19 AM
What a bunch of Mularkey.
December 31st, 2012 at 10:19 AM
You would also think a HOF lineman would be able to develop lineman into strong performers, but if you look at his O Line performance history in AZ, that’s not the case. Either way, he is resigning, not getting fired.
December 31st, 2012 at 10:19 AM
Gruden’s an attention whore, so this is not surprising that he’d put himself out there.
The real news is gonna be if he actually takes a coaching job.
December 31st, 2012 at 10:22 AM
What about those first couple years in AZ? They did alright then, no?
I don’t follow Arizona that closely, but I thought personnel (i.e.–lack thereof) was a bigger problem there.
December 31st, 2012 at 10:24 AM
I went to high school wih Mike Mularkey’s kid. That’s all I got.
December 31st, 2012 at 10:26 AM
The line has been the biggest hole in that team for the entire time Whis and Grimm have been there.
December 31st, 2012 at 10:26 AM
It’s definitely lack of talent (especially on offense) more than anything.
December 31st, 2012 at 10:31 AM
Grimm is a good OL coach if you want to run; Let’s face it; Kurt Warner is a bad-ass in staying in the pocket and took some hits, He’d absorb some hits to let his WR run free. That Arizona team wasnt all that.
December 31st, 2012 at 10:35 AM
i don’t think cutler would take to being coached up by gruden. gruden will want a guy he drafts
how about darrell bevell for the bears? ian rappaport is tweeting that lovie is hanging by a thread, fwiw.
/don’t know rap’s rep
December 31st, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Care to check Arizon’s run game stats for the last several years and get back to me on that? Lack of talent sure, but that line never played well. Warner made them look much, much better by taking a lot of hits as he threw the ball. Grimm has done nothing as a line coach.
December 31st, 2012 at 10:45 AM
If he gets canned, he’s the best HC/OC candidate out there besides maybe Andy Reid.
Not from the footage I’ve seen.
December 31st, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Now Lovie is gone!
Is it wrong that I’m sitting here watching people lose their jobs and absolutely loving it?
December 31st, 2012 at 10:58 AM
Both Lovie Smith and Chan Gailey are gone
December 31st, 2012 at 11:01 AM
Don’t beat yourself up too bad.
It’s not like watching some manufacturing guy lose his gig to Mexico or anything.
Everyone of these coaches have a cushy TV gig waiting for them (at a bare minimum) as their consolation prizes in addition to whatever severance pay is written into their contracts.
December 31st, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Can’t believe Pioli still has a job (or is still “under review”). Is the Patriots’ mystique really that great?
I’m hoping Hunt is just using Pioli to help find a new coach and said coach also wants to be GM or at least have a lot of input into personnel decisions, meaning Pioli is then shown the door.
He’s as much if not more to blame for the sorry state of football in KC.
