Adrian Peterson With a Season for the Ages, Comes Up Nine Yards Short of Eric Dickerson’s Single Season Rushing Record
Adrian Peterson came into the day needing 208 rushing yards to surpass Eric Dickerson. Sometimes, you hear a coach say that the team didn’t lose, they just ran out of time (I believe the great Vince Lombardi said a variation of this after the 1960 Championship Game). Well, Adrian Peterson didn’t miss out on passing the record, he just ran out of yards and time, with one final run bringing him to 199 yards and the Vikings to the brink of the playoffs.
He was not going to be denied, running with a fury and passion that defines him. If you doubted him entering today, you were going against a guy who has proven every doubt wrong for exactly one year, since he tore up his knee. Amazing performance to seal an amazing and historic season. I don’t care if he came nine yards short after the final run that basically set up the chip shot. I was rooting so hard when he broke into the clear on the outside, and he was one more broken tackle from the record. Great sports moment, even if the the record did not fall, and now we get Vikings and Packers again next week.

Considering all the circumstances (Injury, QB, schedule, team makes the playoffs), it might be the most impressive season by a player at any position in NFL history.

I doubted he was going to get it, but wasn’t going against him. I just didn’t think he’d do it, and he got closer than I thought he would.

Maybe a top 5 Vikings game of my lifetime

They were at the 41 when the announcer said he needed 39 yards to break it. I was holding my breath when he busted through the line, damn close. MVP.

He’s a team player, and he made a team play.

As a fellow Vikings homer, what are some your top games? Hell, other than the ’98 team pummeling the Packers on MNF, it’s been a rough go the last 52 years. Maybe knocking off San Fran in the ’87 playoffs?

That one where Gary Anderson ensured a win in the NFC championship game with a late FG.
Wait…

As a non Vikings fan, I found myself slightly rooting for a missed FG and overtime, just to see AP get the record. On a related note, the Cardinals reached for Levi Brown instead of drafting AP that year.

Such a shame that AP didn’t get the record. Class act, he should get the MVP award. Was listening to the radio call in my car taking my boy to a friend’s house. The announcer called it when he broke the line and rumbled down to around the 10. When have been a miracle ending to rip that run off and a TD. Congrats to MIN.

Records all bullshit (Hi, Megatron!) The Vikings are in the playoffs. That is impressive as hell. Good work, Peterson.

In no particular order off the top of my head…
- ’98 MNF vs. Packers
- ’87 Div Playoffs vs. Niners
- ’97 Wild Card at Giants
- ’94 Moon vs. Marino showdown
- ’08 Dome vs. Packers, Peterson nearly singlehandedly winning that one
Then there’s Wild Card wins in ’87, ’88, ’98, ’09 that were all expected wins, but still immensely satisfying

I wonder if he knew how close he was to getting it. In the post game interview he “questioed” Pam Oliver about what she meant by 9 yards. I don’t have any doubt that he knew exacly where he stood and played up only wanting to win for the cameras. I think he was genuinely only concerned with the W, but he also wanted the record.

I agree. But I think he played it classy. We all know he’s the best rb in the game and it is a true pleasure to watch the man work. We’re witnessing greatness. Plus, he helped my fantasy team win it all!

His season embodies what the MVP is supposed to be. It shouldn’t be that close. He is everything to that squad.

I agree with this entire list, but I would add ’98 Thanksgiving game at Dallas as Moss destroys Cowboys single-handedly (and again, same bat-time, same bat-channel in 2000). Also, Moss’ last game as a Viking in the huge playoff win at Lambeau in January of 2005.
