The 2013 Slam Dunk Contest in February Will Be Great – if James White & Gerald Green Are in It
The 2nd greatest slam dunk contest in basketball history* is one you may not have heard of: James White vs. Gerald Green in Russia in 2010. The tape doesn’t lie, folks. Turn the sound off and enjoy this madness.
White, aka “Flight 75″ went to Florida, transferred to Cincinnati, had two tours of duty in the NBA, floated around internationally (Turkey, Russia, Italy) and is now with the Knicks. He turned 30 in October.
Green was another accomplished high school leaper, and got drafted in the 1st round in 2005. He did little-or-nothing for a few years in the NBA, then, like White, bounced around internationally (Russia, China). Last year with the Nets, Green pulled off this dunk; this year with the Pacers he threw this one down. He turns 27 in January, prior to the 2013 dunk contest.
The NBA Slam Dunk contest has gotten increasingly irrelevant in recent years. It is borderline unwatchable. Even though White and Green are reserve role players, this showdown needs to happen.
If it does happen, White vs. Green would garner considerable hype in NBA circles and be the most buzzed-about dunk contest since little Nate Robinson upset Dwight Howard in 2009. And no, the Blake Griffin dunk contest triumph in 2011 was not a big deal – not when he won it on this weak-ass slam.
* 1st, obviously, is Jordan vs. Dominique in 1988.

It is borderline unwatchable.
Yes it is. Endless re-attempts are a big part of the problem but that thing with the car was just stupid. I’m getting grumpy, though.

Like the Home Run Derby, it’s for the kids

Putting a couple no-names in it won’t make it watchable. They are still doing the same dunks Jordan did in the 80s. The only impressive thing to me is that guys in the Russian league can dunk from the free throw line.
Jason – Congrats on the new snot-slinger. That is quite the Christmas present. I hope you are getting your sleep.

James White can two-hand and go between the legs from the free throw line. I would say that’s an upgrade. He is probably the best dunker ever and it would be a shame if he isn’t in it.

If the HR Derby would go from 8 to 3 to champ it’d be the perfect pointless sports happening with the added bonus of freeing up more time for ESPN to show more of the Celebrity Softball Game

Slam Dunk Contest = the Pro Bowl; I don’t think it’s salvageable. The AllStar game itself could be more watcheable though if you have two captains pick teams a la hockey.

I’m very excited that the Black Superbowl is coming to my town.

If it blizzards it’ll be The Whiteout at The Black Super Bowl

I think the dunk contest at its worst is probably better than the Pro Bowl at its best. That thing is just awful. I like the captain idea with the All-Star game although it’s not too bad as it is.

The best is Aaron Rodgers bitching about players in the Pro Bowl not playing hard and just going through the motions. I’m sure he’d feel differently if someone tried too hard and he’d get hurt.

They just need to do away with the game. Name the teams and be done with it. The players don’t want to play and there is no reason the QB with the 7th most votes should get Pro Bowler next to his name because the guys in front of him refused to play.
