Sunday Night Football: Seahawks and 49ers, Two of the Hottest Teams in Football Face Off in the NFC West
The San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks have both looked like two of the more unstoppable teams when they play at their best. Both teams feature hard hitting aggressive defenses, strong running games, and passing games capable of making big plays behind two young quarterbacks.
Two years ago, the NFC West gave us a 7-9 playoff team. Now, the winner of tonight’s game has to be considered one of the favorites to reach the Super Bowl. The first matchup was an ugly, hard hitting 13-6 win for San Francisco. Seattle cannot win the NFC West tonight with a home victory, but they can clinch a playoff spot and push San Francisco to have to win next week. Green Bay also waits and watches, as a San Francisco loss puts them in the driver seat for the bye.

I have no idea who is any good this season. The Texans look like they are fading. I guess Denver is playing well, but they play in the worst division and lost to Houston and New England earlier. Don’t trust the Pats D. The Colts and Bengals are nice stories, but really, really mediocre, especially for playoff teams. Wouldn’t count on that aging Baltimore D or Flacco.

If the Vikings lose and finish 9-7, what are the possibilities they back in to the last wild card spot in true Viking fashion?

Jamaal Charles had the 29th best rushing performance (yards wise) in NFL history and the Chiefs had two 100+ yd rushers and over 500 yds of offense. They still lost, in true Chiefs fashion.

That’s one hell of a stat. Gotta be discouraging.

Shocking until you realize that their QB is Brady Quinn. The same Brady Quinn who couldn’t beat out Tim Tebow in Denver. The same Tim Tebow who couldn’t beat out Mark Sanchez (or Greg McElroy) in New York. The same Mark Sanchez who gets strip-sacked by his own offensive lineman’s ass.

Seattle is very tough at home, I wouldn’t be surprised if they win tonight. San Fran and Green Bay look to be the 2 best in the NFC, Denver and Houston in the AFC, although the Patriots aren’t going to be an easy out, and Houston’s game today is making me doubt my thinking.

Green Bay has kinda gotten overlooked with their slow start and all the hype surrounding San Fran, Seattle, and RGIII. Still, they can’t feel to confident if the game comes down to Mason Crosby. Should be happy that it looks like the Giants are done. Since my team blows, guess I’ll pull for the Seahawks, fun team to watch.

I agree Smallie. And I’m kicking myself in the ass for picking 49ers tonight. Had a 5 team card cover 4 for 4 so far. Got a feeling it’s going to be 4 for 5 come end of the night.

49ers look like a different D without Smith out there
December 23rd, 2012 at 9:03 PM
Green Bay is the only team to win @ Seattle this yr.

I had the pleasure of attending the PIT/CIN debacle this afternoon. The last 2 minutes featured some of the worst coaching in the history of the profession.
First, Marvin the genius attempts a 56 yard FG with the nearly decrepit Kris Brown. Keep in mind he went for it on 4th and 22 from his own 32 earlier in the game rather than attempt a 49 yarder. The ball barely made it halfway through the end zone.
Not to be outdone, Tomlin has his kicker attempt a 54 yarder. Again, short, but not as woefully as the previous. Keep in mind Tomlin blew the TEN game earlier in the year by attempting a similar FG in the final 2 minutes.
Facing a 3rd and 1 on the PIT 40ish yard line, Marvin the Genius has Dalton throw deep to Green-Ellis out of the backfield, rather than pick up the first down and work for a FG. CIN punts.
PIT, now with :40 left and 2 timeouts, completes a pass inbounds for 11 yards after starting at their own 10. They fail to take a time out, but the Lewis coached Bengals D delays the game by laying on the Steeler player stopping the clock.
Next was the moronic INT from Ben from :14 left. Tomlin decides to leave AJ Green in single coverage on the outside, resulting let another out pattern completion to let CIN into realistic FG range and the game winning/season ending FG.
/sorry – had to vent

And Todd Haley has to go. I tried being patient all year. But this offense blows. It put up 30 points once all year, and that was against OAK in a game they still lost.
Today, the Steeler D actually forced some TO’s and game the O a shorter field with tons of momentum. All 3 possessions started run-run on the first 2 downs for minimal gains, rather than at least once attempting to go deep (or at least play action).

Ha! – Forgot the asterisk

Seahawks D has been playing amazing the past few weeks. They look like they can really make some noise in the playoffs.
Texans will lose their 1st playoff game. Kubiak has become so predictable on play calling, the offense looked terrible today. Defense has too many injuries and a bad secondary. Schaub is pathetic in big games. Seeing Luck, RGIII, Wilson etc playing great makes me wish the Texans would draft a QB.
December 23rd, 2012 at 9:32 PM
Kaepernck looks shaky tonight so far. He’s probably the weak point inthe 49ers Super Bowl chances.
December 23rd, 2012 at 9:36 PM
Texans’ success on offense is all predicated on pass protection. If Schaub doesn’t have time to stand around back there, he’s horrendous. The Vikings gave him the yips today and it showed.
December 23rd, 2012 at 9:37 PM
No matter what, Kubiak will call a run on 1st down, a draw play on 3rd and long, etc. Totally predictable. He refuses to throw the ball when the run isn’t working. Just keeps running for no gain. Then they get in the red zone and he abandons the run when it could actually work. They have success on bootlegs, but he only calls 3 or 4 a game. Never runs any type of reverses or “non-basic” plays or any new formations. Playbook on offense hasn’t changed at all in 5 years.

Can they win 3 straight road games? Unless Arizona knocks off the Niners next week that’s what they’ll have to do.
December 23rd, 2012 at 9:41 PM
Neither team in that Cincy-Pitt game looked playoff worthy. Also, as a Chiefs’ fan, I can tell you Todd Haley isn’t half as smart as he thinks he is. He got lucky in Arizona, but was terrible in KC after he ran Charlie Weis off.
December 23rd, 2012 at 9:44 PM
Seattle could beat the NFC East champ on the road. They could beat SF in SF. Atlanta, maybe. GB in GB would be tough.
December 23rd, 2012 at 9:45 PM
AFC is really top heavy. Will be shocked if it’s not Pats or Broncos in the Super Bowl. Amazing how 2 QB’s can dominate a conference for over a decade (yes I know Big Ben has 2 rings, he also has missed the playoffs 3 times and lost playoff games to David Garrard and Tim Tebow)
December 23rd, 2012 at 10:11 PM
How the hell can the cowboys win the east next week with a win?
December 23rd, 2012 at 10:18 PM
Tie-breakers. Split with WAS, same Div. record, better record vs. common opponents. (AFC North and NFC South) Conference record is 4th tie-breaker.

Niners decided to give me my Xmas present early. A nice big hunk of coal. Winnings?!?! You can’t have winnings! Oh well. ‘Ol boss lady’s most likely going to be here all day tomorrow, so I won’t be getting on here. Merry Christmas to everybody.
December 23rd, 2012 at 11:20 PM
Merry christmas hosebags

I hope everyone had a happy Festivus. I aired my grievances and showed feats of strength today. Did you?
December 24th, 2012 at 1:57 AM

The usual. 3am show time tomorrow for another community holiday meal. Keeps me busy.
How about you? Gathering with family or friends? Travel, maybe?
December 24th, 2012 at 8:52 AM
it’s a typically woppy christmas round these parts…got the seven fish this evening and then the 40+ blowout tomorrow at my uncle’s for gnocchi, meatballs, lamb, all sorts of good shit.
thankfully out of the office at 1…gotta start shopping.
December 24th, 2012 at 8:59 AM
wow, that sounds great. Except for the shopping part. Take a deep breath and dive in.
I took an easy way out this year. Bought books for everyone back home, and gift cards for my daughter & son.
December 24th, 2012 at 9:05 AM
woppy
Nice slur. Didn’t realize you were such a raycess, even among your own family.
/jk – I’m half guinea-wop
//merry damn Christmas everyone
December 24th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
Spencer do you really have to shop still? I went to a big outlet center near me about 2 weeks ago and it was so ridiculously packed I couldn’t imagine going out today or even this past weekend.
December 24th, 2012 at 9:26 AM
yea, i always wait until the last minute…ive got my dad and the lady ive been defiling taken care of. need a GC for mi madre and a small thingee for gma at a place by my office and then two of my buddies, which i can do late. not bad.
December 24th, 2012 at 9:26 AM

December 24th, 2012 at 9:36 AM
Merry Christmas everyone. Although tough to be merry when you are one of the few assholes in the office.
December 24th, 2012 at 9:41 AM
golf?
December 24th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
There’s an indoor golf facility about 10 minutes from my office that I will be utilizing this winter.
December 24th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
damn, that looks pretty money, tho is that just a net you hit full shots into?
we’ve got a golf dome round here i go to a couple times per week…was hittin solid all day yesterday at a packed house, but not especially accurately. tho quite the ego boost to have a couple ppl compliment you. this dad brought his son over to say hello because the son liked the way my shots sounded and i didnt have the heart to tell him those shots would’ve been all over the map and i shoulda been hitting wedges instead.
December 24th, 2012 at 9:59 AM
Spencer what do you think about the new PGA tour schedule, starting in Oct next year instead of January? More golf=better or is it weird counting overseas tournies?
December 24th, 2012 at 10:00 AM
It has the nets in the “driving range” portion, and the simulators like you’d find in a golf galaxy or dicks or wherever. It’s not terribly expensive, and it’s pretty much the only option other than going out in the cold, which i won’t do.
December 24th, 2012 at 10:01 AM
i think tim finchem shouldve been fired about five times already…compared to the q-school bullshit and stealing the WGC from greg norman, this move (which, on its own, i’d consider cause for replacement) elicits just a shrug.
December 24th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
oh nice…it’s got sims. hear you on the cold. you do a heated booth?
December 24th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
Inside? If there’s sucha thing outside, I’ve never seen it.
December 24th, 2012 at 10:07 AM
oh yea man, they’re fuckin’ great. you hit out from a garage door into the range with these big ass heaters in it…there’s a couple in my area. pretty fun to hit into those types of elements too, with the crazy wind and snow and all that.
December 24th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
That sounds awesome. I don’t think there are any around here, but if find one I’ll definitely give it a try.
