Lomas Brown Admitted He Let Scott Mitchell Get Hurt To Get Him Out of a Game
Lomas Brown had a stunning admission on the radio with Scott Van Pelt and Ryen Russillo on Friday (courtesy of the Detroit Free Press). He admitted that he basically let a pass rusher (Sean Jones of the Packers) get a free shot on his quarterback Scott Mitchell.
“We were playing Green Bay in Milwaukee. We were getting beat, 24-3, at that time and he just stunk up the place. He’s throwing interceptions, just everything. So I looked at Kevin Glover, our All-Pro center and I said, ‘Glove, that is it.’ I said, ‘I’m getting him out the game.’ … So I got the gator arms on the guy at the last minute, he got around me, he hit Scott Mitchell, he did something to his finger … and he came out the game. Dave Krieg came in the game. We ended up losing that game, 27-24.”
He had some of the facts wrong about that game (final score, etc) but yes, Scott Mitchell was knocked out of the game in the second quarter when the Lions were getting blown out, and it ended his season. It was Scott Mitchell’s first year in Detroit after being traded from Miami, and Dave Krieg came in for that game and the rest of the year.
Stunning admission by Lomas Brown, now an ESPN commentator. I mean, I guess it’s not surprising that someone would do that at some point, but probably not something you want to actually admit to doing.

um, sure it’s dumb to admit, even years later, but anyone shocked by underhanded behavior in a brutal game played by borderline characters is silly

Ya, but sabotaging a teammate is reprehensible

I don’t always mind dirty play, but call me a traditionalist because I prefer it against the opponent. Mitchell should slip Scopolamine in fatboy’s drink at a Lions reunion and take it from there

It worked out better for Scott Mitchell than it did for Pat Tillman.

Most shocking is Lomas Brown running a play without getting called for a false start.

And that after all these years he still laughs at the shit that spews out of Berman’s mouth.

Wonder how this comment helps the ex-players’ lawsuit against the league regarding concussions. Sure, the league isn’t doing anything to cut down on injuries by adding season long Thursday games, playing hardball with the regular refs, and threatening to add more games, but a statement like this shows that the players are far from blameless in the injury epidemic.
