Deron Williams is “one evening gown shy of a diva,” Columnist Writes
Dave D’Alessandro, one of the best writers covering the NBA, destroyed Deron Williams today in the Star-Ledger. Eviscerated the point guard. A tease:
This has less to do with how you play — which is bad enough, you readily admit nowadays — than how you act, which is just one evening gown shy of a diva. And by now you may have sensed that everyone around you seems unwilling to share their candid observations with you.
Somewhere, Jerry Sloan — who, as D’Alessandro put it, “he’d rather live with his 30 tractors in McLeansboro, Ill., than put up with your insubordination” — is sipping on a latte and muttering to himself, “it took you guys almost two years to figure that out?”
I can’t wait to see how the Deron Williams beat writers for the Deron Williams website handle this one.

What a racist asshole
December 20th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Like I said, if Jerry Sloan couldn’t handle this guy, it’s hilarious that people were trumpeting him to deal with Kobe, Howard, and MWP.
December 20th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
Oh…cool. I shall now continue reading.
/Deron Williams
December 20th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
Interesting. Wasn’t he like the third best player on that Illinois Championship game team, if I remember correctly?
December 20th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
I live in BK and the team they’ve assembled is pretty much unlikeable, from Williams to washed up Joe Johnson and throw in Kris Humphries…
December 20th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
/struggles to stay on topic
December 20th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
kobe’s a different type of diva…he’d respect sloan like he didn’t respect mike brown, and as long as he’s winning, he probably wouldnt do the kind of shit deron’s accused of (?).
just playing devil’s advocate…howard fits this same bill tho for sure. that’d have been fun to watch.
December 20th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
What a racist asshole
Yeah, the write rsticking up for the black coach Avery Johnson. That’s straight Klan there.
December 20th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
“Have you prepared my latte, honey?” Jerry Sloan never asked as he got off his John Deere.
December 20th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
Alexa has DeronWilliams.com ranked somewhere near 1.85 millionth in popularity. Not much of a return of investment on that reporter he hired, probably.
December 20th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
Deron’s beard looks like a tattoo.
/on topic still?
December 20th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
at the time, maybe.
December 20th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
There were those who thought that was Dee Brown’s team…they were wrong then too
December 20th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
This is true. Kobe’s a diva, but he’s not stupid. Guarantee he loves Sloan.
December 20th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
You think Jerry Sloan drinks lattes? Come on J-mac.
/team black coffee
December 20th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
Would be between him and Head. Head was the best scorer, but Williams was the creator and was the only one who played worth a shit in that title game.
December 20th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
Is this a transcribed sarcastic version of a missed high five?
I…don’t think you do. Dee Brown was better maybe their freshman and part of their soph years, but definitely not the last year.
December 20th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
How can anyone not like MarShon Brooks? Now, if only he’d see the floor (and play some defense) a little more often…
December 20th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
Interesting. Wasn’t he like the third best player on that Illinois Championship game team, if I remember correctly?
at the time, maybe.
Remember? That was when he was fat. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/draft/d05/tracker/player?playerId=18717
December 20th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
How the fuck was Dee Brown a finalist for the Wooden Award and first team All American. GOD college basketball sucks.
December 20th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
Gotcha. Been so long. I just remember always hearing about Dee Brown and Head
December 20th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
GOD college basketball sucks.
Careful. A certain EIC has quite the attachment to college basketball.
December 20th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
How you going to give a gift basket themed around coffee and cocoa and forget to include the hooch?
December 20th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
Jerry Sloan’s overrated.
December 20th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Bill Simmons has been talking about this since the summer. Said Williams has the least charisma of any NBA superstar in recent memory.
December 20th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Dee Brown – great college player but too small, and not a good enough shooter. There’s only one Iverson.
December 20th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
I just heard Cowherd on my way to lunch. I’m paraphrasing, but he said something like, ” the Yankees should let Cano go ’cause with the new WAR stat he’s worth like 5 wins. These gms are all doing it wrong overpaying these guys. I would rather go after someone like Verlander because at least he wins you 20 games”. Sports radio is rarely worth mentioning but equating pitcher wins and WAR was impressively stupid.
December 20th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
Deron plays a lot like Andre Miller now. Slow footed PG that can’t beat his man and can’t shoot but runs a decent offense.
December 20th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
illinois should have won the title game that year but bruce webers fist speech http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-yUrVJniqk deflated them
and the refs made sure roy williams got his first title. sean may just ran over everyone. disgusting
that illinois team was one of the best
FACT
December 20th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Avery Johnson is one more Brook Lopez 18 foot isolation from being fired….at least he should be
December 20th, 2012 at 12:29 PM
nba doesnt matter till playoffs
December 20th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
This is exactly why Deron should’ve gone to Dallas. Could’ve played under arguably the league’s best coach, who has already vastly improved OJ Mayo. Instead, he opted for a coach who has the Nets longing for Lawrence Frank
December 20th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
bWAR in 2012: Robbie Cano 8.2, Verlander 7.5.
Cowherd is in over his head talking about baseball stats.
The fact is though the Yankees have so much committed to useless guys like ARod that they may not be able to keep Cano and get under the luxury tax.
December 20th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
I was surprised by almost everything the Nets did in the last 6 months, but didn’t hate this signing. Might be changing my mind…
December 20th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
The NBA is covered like a soap opera. This is a good, this a bad guy, blase blase. The Nets were playing well until Lopez was hurt.
December 20th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
The GM is Billy King. Expect the stupid, er, the surprising
December 20th, 2012 at 12:44 PM
24 hr. sports media need something to talk about over an 82 game regular season. They got a lot of mileage out of LeBron for many years and right now he’s really not that interesting until the Heat face elimination in the playoffs again.
December 20th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
The arguments against Dallas being okay this year (would have except Dirk injury) were the same as the one where the Redskins had “no chance” to win the East.
/my pick is two games from happening
//go Skins
///my other pick was the Chiefs…
December 20th, 2012 at 12:49 PM
I still like Dallas to make the playoffs
December 20th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
Considering USA Today’s target demo of GED candidates and Juco dropouts, you’d think there would be stable of copy editors available to help Jason write somewhat coherently.

December 20th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
What exactly has Carlisle done to “vastly improve” Mayo?
December 20th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Glad to see Carlisle’s stock soar in Dirk’s absence. He’s been underrated for years – he got no credit for building the Detroit “dynasty” a decade ago and his tenure in Indiana was derailed by the Malice Palace game. He sent Spoelstra back to grade school in the Finals and got no credit for shutting down LeBron.
December 20th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
Olive oil instead of vegetable oil.
/half the fat!
December 20th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
got no credit for shutting down LeBron.
That’s interesting. I’m pretty sure the only story I really heard about that series other than “Dirk won!” is that the Mavs schemed LeBron perfectly.
December 20th, 2012 at 1:00 PM
Tangibly, improved him as a jump shooter and playmaker. Intangibly, Mayo’s become a better leader and is giving more consistent effort. Tough to pinpoint exactly how much credit Carlisle gets for the latter, but he’s played a role
December 20th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
Mayo admitted Carlisle was a huge reason he went to Dallas. Some vet, I forget who (Terry, I think), advised him to go there because Carlisle is so adept in player development
December 20th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
Nevermind. It was Billups
December 20th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Mayo has always been a leader and a hard worker. He was minimized in Memphis by the move to the bench, which was more of a money move to eventually let him go than a basketball one. The biggest thing he gets from Carlisle is playing time.
December 20th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Cuban has gone to great lengths to promote this, that’s for sure. But in the immediate aftermath it was hard to hear any credit toward the Mavs over the “LEBRON’S A CHOKER” noise.
December 20th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Dammit, I was gonna use that line about Sanchise in the next daily Jets post.
December 20th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Hard worker is true from a practice standpoint. He had a tendency to drift in and out of games in Memphis is where I was going with consistent effort, but that’s a problem among many young players.
December 20th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
Don’t argue with the EIC about “his” Warriors.
December 20th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Only when he reads Peter King.
December 20th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
On the topic of coaches…I’m not sure there is a worse match of coach and personnel than the Bucks. Scott Skiles is destined for a stroke. He’s got two no defense, no conscience gunners in the backcourt, and Larry Sanders is astonishingly clueless and lackadaisical. Fire Skiles just to put him out of his misery
December 20th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
Mayo is still playing fewer minutes per game than he did in his first two seasons, so it’s not all playing time related. He’s shooting an astounding 52% from behind the arc, and has never even shot 40% from deep.
I am assuming some of it is Carlisle related, some of it is just smallish sample size related, and maybe some if it is some work/change he did/made in the offseason?
December 20th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
The Warriors defensive personnel is heinous. They’ll sneak by with enough regular season wins on sheer effort, but it’ll rear it’s ugly head in the playoffs. Spurs, Nuggets, and Rockets are also really bad on D. Ladies and gentleman, the Western Conference!
December 20th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
Ya, the 52% if definitely due to small sample size. I’ve heard Carlisle directly credited for offering Mayo important mechanical tweaks. To Mayo’s credit though, he’s always been a hard worker and willing student
December 20th, 2012 at 1:32 PM
I hadn’t heard that. If that’s the case, then I stand corrected
