Wisconsin Hired Gary Andersen From Utah State: Well Played, Barry Alvarez
Barry Alvarez told Wisconsin fans not to panic. His words were wise. The Badgers have landed Utah State coach Gary Andersen. Highly sought after, Andersen had shrugged off interest from multiple schools to stay with the Aggies. This could prove a major coup.
Andersen is coming off a phenomenal fourth season at Utah State. His Aggies won 11 games for the first time in school history. Finishing top ten in yards per play offense and defense, this was no fluke or product of scheduling. The two losses were by five points combined at Wisconsin and vs. BYU.
He should fit in at Wisconsin. The school competes with Michigan and Ohio State, but cannot recruit on that level. They bring in the fourth or fifth best Big Ten class in a good year. The Badgers need a coach that can implement a system and can find and develop unheralded guys to fit it. That’s what Andersen did at Utah State.
His defensive emphasis should play well in the Big Ten. His Utah units were dominant. He flipped Utah State from 100th in yards per play in 2010 to fourth in 2012. Wisconsin faces a probable conversion from their aggressive 4-3 to Andersen’s Alabama-style 3-4, though that should not be devastating.
Andersen has a reputation as a strong recruiter. He should readjust his offense to Wisconsin’s personnel, though perhaps with quarterbacks more versatile than the traditional Stocco/Tolzien types. This should be a strong hire. We would say Alvarez’ calm, focused and successful coaching search should be a model for schools, but he may be the only athletic director in the country with the gravitas to exert that degree of control.

Fixed.

let’s give it a few years before we deem it successful.

Imagine if Gruden’s name would have been mentioned…then this whole process would have been botched.
December 19th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
Offers from Cal and Colorado aren’t exactly difficult to come by.
Can’t say I watched any Utah State this year, so purely going on what the often wrong experts say, but seems decent.
December 19th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
Good choice. Need to keep Diaco in South Bend as long as possible.
December 19th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
Love the hire though I’m curious to see how he adapts his offense to the type of talent Wisconsin is able to recruit.
December 19th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
I like it, he outcoached Bielema at Camp Randall last year only to have his kicker blow it so he’s already got that going for him
December 19th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
So is Alvarez basically seen as God in Wisconsin? Or at the right hand of Lombardi?
December 19th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
Pretty low bar.

Just about, I think people who weren’t initially planning on attending the Rose Bowl this time around decided to just because he’ll be on the sideline

Nice work, Teve Torbes.

Good to see Saban’s trademarked that scheme…

Seems like a home run hire. Meanwhile, NEB is stuck with Dumbo for as long as he wants to ruin the program.

Truth. Bielema is trash in game

Bo Pelini’s head just exploded.

5. Kirk Ferentz
Salary: $3,835,000
Football Budget: $18 million
Team: Iowa Hawkeyes
Conference: Big Ten
The Hawkeyes haven’t been particularly competitive of late, but Ferentz’s contract offers him some incredible job security. If he were to be terminated without cause, Ferentz would be entitled to 75% of his remaining contract, worth about $21 million.
/HAHAHAHA

C’Mon KC. Christmas season is no time to make SC cry.
December 19th, 2012 at 12:44 PM
Disagree. I like the hire from a personality and philosophy standpoint, but I have concerns. Anderson is a Utah guy through and through, so I’ll be interested to see how he can recruit a new area. He’s been able to spot quality under-recruited talent, so hopefully that trend translates.
December 19th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
Ohhhhh, context really is everything. lol
To measure coaching power, we looked at each coach’s salary, its proportion of the school’s total coaching salaries and athletic expenditures, the football budget at the coach’s disposal (football expenses less coach’s salary) and how much it would cost the school to terminate his contract before the end of the year.
December 19th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
That’s been Badger football for 20+ years now…seems like Barry just found a younger version of himself, will be curious to see if Andersen also has an affinity for booze and cheerleaders
December 19th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
I don’t get it. Do Iowa people want him gone?
December 19th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
He fits Wisconsin perfectly by all accounts. I think they chose the right concept as far as scheme and style are concerned. I look forward to this dude hanging 70 on NEB in a few years.
/fuck

Good hire. I’ve been impressed with them every time I’ve seen them play (just 3-4).

HuskerDawg…as the preeminent Nebraska/Georgia fan on this site…how do you allegiances lie in the bowl game? Thoughts on the outcome?
/not sure if you have mentioned this…
December 19th, 2012 at 12:53 PM
Yeah I clicked through and when I saw Patterson at two I had to go back and look at the criteria. So basically power = inability to fire. That … well that actually makes a shitload of sense. Fair.
December 19th, 2012 at 12:53 PM
Bill Callahan is back?
December 19th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
This was his first losing season in 12 years. At Iowa. I think he’s safe for now.
December 19th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
Not a fan of the game. If UGA shows up they’ll roll (38-17ish), but I highly doubt they show up. Thinking 27-23 Georgia after they sleepwalk through the first half. As for allegiances, I want UGA to win because I want them to go out with a win after the SEC game ended the way it did. That and I hate Pelini and want him fired (even though I have no faith in NEB being able to land anyone markedly better).
December 19th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
Agreed that it’s a good hire, but home run is strong IMO. Chris Peterson would’ve been the home run. Urban Meyer was a home run. This is good, like Brady Hoke good.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
Depends on if UGA shows up pissed off that they’re not in the title game and ready to play, or one that shows up flat and disappointed with guys looking forward to the draft.
If I know Mark Richt it will be the latter.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
is this serious? I’m sure Iowa fans are happy being on the lower tier of a conference currently going through a down cycle
December 19th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
So a ground rule double.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
Iowa fans should be happy to be in a relevant conference. They’re Iowa
December 19th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Ferentz is untouchable because of that contract not because it’s his first losing season in twelve years. Easily the most ill advised contract in college sports.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
I want to be able to say something…but I can’t.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
Alternatively: Iowa fans should be unhappy they’re paying their head coach 400k less than Urban Meyer. They’re Iowa.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
True, but silver lining’s that Ferentz is about as safe as it gets
/slight Uconn homerism
December 19th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
That and I hate Pelini and want him fired (even though I have no faith in NEB being able to land anyone markedly better).
This. Exactly this.

What’s an “Alabama style 3-4″ and how does it differ from other 3-4 defenses?
