Cleveland Browns Head Coaching Targets: Nick Saban (Won’t Happen), Chip Kelly (Could Happen), Josh McDaniels (Will Happen)

Ten days ago, Greg Bedard of the Globe reported that the Cleveland Browns would install Michael Lombardi of the NFL Network as their next GM, and then make a run at Alabama coach Nick Saban to replace Pat Shurmur.
The Cleveland media has caught up with the rumor and Tony Grossi reports that the Browns are expected to name Lombardi as the team’s GM. What will Lombardi do for a head coach? Writes Grossi:
1) Nick Saban of Alabama.
2) Chip Kelly of Oregon.
3) Josh McDaniels, who has had an eventful three years in Denver, St. Louis and New England.
A Lombardi-McDaniels union wouldn’t surprise anybody, given how glowingly Lombardi spoke about him last year. The real discussion in Cleveland will surround the report that Ryan Mallett, the former Arkansas QB, would likely come with McDaniels from New England and start for the Browns. That’d be a major bummer for Brandon Weeden, the team’s 2012 1st round pick. Would Belichick give his buddies a hometown discount on Mallett?

Jesus, man. Why would you put this post on a nationally popular blog just to get a rise out of one single guy in Cleveland?
December 19th, 2012 at 1:32 PM
I’m all about them fightin Roll Tides, but damn McCarron….
December 19th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
More draft picks for New England? With the 6th rounder Mallet would draw that should put the Patriots up to their usual 38 picks for 2013
December 19th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
What’s with that girl that has no tits?
December 19th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
That zombie he’s with is almost as scary as his tattoos. I think I’ve seen that girl in a Silent Hill game
December 19th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
honestly, wouldnt be too upset with mcdaniels. lombardi? different story…
December 19th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
one single guy in Cleveland
what’s marital status have to do with it? so spencer can’t find love, leave him be
December 19th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
What about Mallet? I’d be unhappy about that.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
Oh, and I thought Chip was heading to Philly? I’ll hang up and listen….
December 19th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
If he learned some lessons from the Denver fiasco, maybe.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
that tattoo is terrible
December 19th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
i viewed that as the classic mistake of giving someone with too little experience too much responsibility.
that said, as much as i wouldnt mind a young, motivated, aggressive coach like mcdaniels, he’d be completely hamstrung by lombardi.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
They seem to be trending up. Why change coaches?
In addition, if they insist on change, McDaniels isn’t the right choice. Still too immature. But, if you hire him, maybe he brings Tebow along…heh heh heh.
Not a big fan of coaching trees, if you couldn’t tell before.

that could be a good thing, enter exhibit A
December 19th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
i disagree from a scheme standpoint…the browns have a deep threat in gordon, a guy who can work the slot in little and his blocking schemes would work better for richardson than what the browns are using now. plus mcdaniels will tailor his attack to the talent on hand, something shurmur’s incapable of doing.
again tho…lombardi.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
chip kelly is the bears’. hands off
December 19th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
im not sure what youre getting at…mcdaniels won’t have a puppet GM like xanders. and im fairly certain he realized how grave a mistake that was…at least hope so.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
the browns have a deep threat in gordon
You misspelled Travis Benjamin
December 19th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
Would NE really want to give up Mallet at all?
December 19th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
I get that you’re being loyal to Bedard. However he was about the 5th or 6th reporter to tie Lombadi to Joe Banner’s puppet regime in Cleveland. Bedard was also terrible inaccurate on the Saban link.
Heckert had some misses along with some nice selections, but Joe Banner and Mike Lombardi would probably be the worst college drafting team in the NFL. Absolutely terrible.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
No way.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
Yeah hands off. He and Rex Ryan as the DC will make beautiful music together in Philly.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Does anybody make Hulk jokes about Joe Banner? There has to be some iteration of The Incredible Hulk where he was named Joe.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
i misspelled nothing. 3:40 in this video.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
You misspelled Travis Benjamin
Benjamin is garbage as a WR. Has some value as a returner and will be the replacement for Cribbs. But he’s been shoved off 4-5 routes already this year that have resulted in INTs. Gordon is a straight up badass though. Most exciting rookie receiver in CLE in my lifetime perhaps.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:44 PM

December 19th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
McDaniels got 4000 yards from Orton. I’d give him 1 year with Weededn.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
somehow im even more confused now.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
If he truly has matured as a coach and person, perhaps so. I know I shouldn’t live in the past.
I’ll admit, when he was hired in Denver I thought it was an inspired choice. When he lost the locker room, things fell apart fast. Wouldn’t want to see the same happen in Cleveland.
Also, to me it seems if things are improving as they appear to be, continuity in staff is crucial to maintain the upward momentum.
What if Shurmur matures as a coach? Would an improved, more insightful Shurmur be that much worse than a new guy in ’13?
How many times have you seen a team take a step back as the new guy installs his brand of leadership?
December 19th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
I’m all about them fightin Roll Tides, but damn McCarron….

legalize it
December 19th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
You’ve just hurt Webster Slaughter’s feelings.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
Hands off, I want Reid as HC and Rex as DC in Detroit. Then hire someone else to be GM as well.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
Honestly, haven’t you Lions fans been through enough?
December 19th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
dude, browns offense STILL isn’t cut blocking guys on short slant routes and STILL can’t call plays to save his life. no idea if he’ll mature or not, but frankly, he hasn’t earned that benefit of the doubt.
ive seen it happen, oh, about five times since the browns came back in 1999. it’s ugly.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
Hey, now. Reid is going to San Diego as HC. He likes the beach.

December 19th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
id still be surprised if andy reid wasn’t the next browns coach. makes far too much sense.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
Rob Parker? Izzat you?
December 19th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
You’ve just hurt Webster Slaughter’s feelings.
Imagine Reggie Langhorne’s anguish. Also, I don’t care that Gordon’s better, use him as your go-to guy if need be. I just like Banjamin (now) because he went to The U.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Slaughter was the last Brown to be first team all Pro at WR. But he had a good Kosas at QB and his stats were way worse than what Gordon has – comparing their rookie seasons.
In terms of hair, Slaughter has a flawless victory.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Hands off, I want Reid as HC and Rex as DC in Detroit.
Please let this dumpster-fire in the making happen
December 19th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
yea…dude’s a money KR too. and if teams don’t jam him at the line, they’re retarded. he’s just too fucking fast.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
my are you a negative nancy today!
December 19th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
I would bring Mallet in, let em compete and then tell Weeden to fuck off
December 19th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Hey, now. Reid is going to San Diego as HC. He likes the beach.
Is this a whale watching joke?
December 19th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
his stats were way worse than what Gordon has
I’m not sure that’s fair, even if Gordon is better. You’re comparing mid-80s Marty-ball to a current NFL(ish) offense?
December 19th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Braylon wasn’t that one year?
December 19th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
Shurmur isn’t the worst but he makes a lot of mistakes an NFL coach should not be making. There’s an irony he has Chilly as OC.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Lombardi has been critical in print and in podcasts of Reid. I’d be quite surprised if that happened, actually.
That Parcells/Belichick coaching group (I’d count Lombardi in that) and the Bill Walsh/West Coach offense coaching group (Reid, obvs) don’t seem to mix too often.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
In the end, he fleeced KC for Cassell.

Hate fucks are a hell of a drug.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
dude, lombardi has not been hired yet. and not only that, but it’s nothing but unsubstantiated rumor at this point.
lombardi’s been critical of just about anyone that isn’t bill belichick.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
unsubstantiated rumor, most likely floated by lombardi himself, it should be mentioned.
December 19th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
I’ll lose a lot of respect for Saban (as a pro, not a person, to those who’ll say something like “whatever makes him happy) if he doesn’t jump to the NFL
December 19th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
Vlad, Edwards wasnt first team all pro. He made the pro bowl, but wasn’t All Pro – that’s the top 11 on offense and defense
December 19th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
Spencer…do you think Lombardi will bring in the Aaron Brooks-type or the Kerry Collins-type QB? Imagine the possibilities.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
Ty, just stop. Ha!
Reid isn’t fat, he has center-of-gravity dysfunction. So there…
December 19th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
o’brien second place in cfb coach of the year race
December 19th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
I’m not sure that’s fair, even if Gordon is better. You’re comparing mid-80s Marty-ball to a current NFL(ish) offense?
Lindsay Infante’s offense was more innovative and effective in 1986 than Pat Shurmur’s 2012 Browns offense. I am quite serious about this. Have you even seen Gordon play? I wish they’d go all Randy Ratio and throw it way more to him.

i know for a fact that the entire team hate shurmur and wants him gone.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:05 PM
Just as a visceral, instant reaction to this comment, I don’t know how many NFL head coaches have the amount of power in their jobs that Nick Saban has in his current gig, but I doubt it’s very many.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
serious question: were Brown’s fans happy with the selection of Gordon in 2nd round of supplemental draft? I think I recall rumblings…

Schumur is probably using him incorrectly. He’s not a guy you line up on the outside and let get bumped by DBs.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
lol
we werent thrilled with the risk (it was a 2nd rounder) because we didnt really know much about him. i was excited because i read a lot about him at matt waldman’s site, but still…there was just so much unknown.
to answer your question…im pretty sure 99% fo browns fans werent as optimistic as i was.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
I don’t know how many elected government representatives have that much power.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
a smart move by the Browns for once? I’ll wait and see.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
The Browns refuted the Haslam Gruden rumors immediately. When asked about Lombardi, they said they wont speculate on rumors. That’s a legit source of concern for me.
Now they are saying they will evaluate at end of year. Banner also then said, nothing in the next two games will drive their decisions? Then why are they waiting?
Shurmur and Heckert are done. Banner will have a puppet regime. His hoodwinking of Jimmy Haslam will be one of the greatest con jobs in local sports ownership history.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
but that’s where they put him…and when he doesnt play, pat shurmur says “well, he can’t get off the line.”
December 19th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
You mean he’d come from Cincinnati, right?
December 19th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
i know for a fact that the entire team hate shurmur and wants him gone.
interesting. I presumed his mistakes on offense made him unpopular but I presumed if they hated him their’d have been more said about him. T-Rich complaining was the first reported all year.
serious question: were Brown’s fans happy with the selection of Gordon in 2nd round of supplemental draft? I think I recall rumblings…
Some felt his pot issues were a big concern but people saw that Heckert did ID talent well. I think a massive, massive hole at WR made people justify the move in the supplemental. Turned out to be, as they say in soccer, a home run.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
they refuted rumors that had to do with tennessee and haslam’s connection, right? not something that had to do with the org…big difference.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Lindsay
is this a cleveland joke?
December 19th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
Browns should go after Dwayne Bowe or Greg Jennings.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
Titus Young was a great 2nd round pick.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
wow, even for a sportswriter shying away from the negative….there is not one mention (upon skimming article) of declan sullivan in that COY story
December 19th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
I thought the Bengals were targeting Mallet as their next QB?
December 19th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
Who plays in their slot position?
December 19th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
maybe it’s not the right place
December 19th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
Kelly’s agent is just trying to get him mentioned in as many rumors as possible in order to drive his price up.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
benjamin does get used wrong, but any NFL WR needs to fight for his routes and get his head turned back to the ball faster. yes he is a rookie, and I do think he has value;
side note, it’ll be sad to see Josh Cribbs go and play for a contender next season. (New England?)
December 19th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Is having a better career than Limas Sweed
/hook em
December 19th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
depends…they motion gordon into the slot a lot to get him matched up with an LB and little plays the slot very well. sometimes massaquoi, who’s not nearly as good as hakeem nicks, i believe it should be mentioned.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
agreed…i see him getting reunited with brad seely in SF.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
the rumor was Jimmy Haslam was going to offer Gruden a piece of the Browns if he’d coach the Vols. high comedy. BUTLOOKATTHATDISASTEROFACOACHINGSEARCHATTENNESSEE!!
December 19th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
“Agreed”
–Aaron Rodgers, moments before finding Cobb for another 25 yards
December 19th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
Who plays in their slot position?
We run some ancient WCO with a TE, 2 WR, a FB (played by tight end Alex Smith) and a RB. When we are 3rd and long, they shuttle in either a 2nd TE or Mohammed Massaquot to run a route 2 yards less than needed for the first down.

I pray I am wrong and Banner ends up hiring some football guy to make the football decisions. He is on record as saying Haslam will hire and fire all coaches not him. Lombardi will be a catastrophe, a consensus bust if you will.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:23 PM

I think Heckert is still trying to trade Owen Marecic to the 49ers.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
Wait, has Shurmur been fired yet?
December 19th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
Alex Smith has actually been pretty damn good as a FB. When they finally quit with Marecic and put Smith in there, that coincided with some improvement on offense. Marecic might be out of the NFL next year. Stone hands.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
What was the deal with McDaniels in DEN? That 2nd year shit hit the fan, right.

December 19th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
Have you even seen Gordon play?
I have. I actually go out of my way to watch the Browns when they’re on (you never know what you’ll get in L.A.) because I like
to be whipped and ball-gagged and Browns football is a natural extension of those activitiesTrent Richardson and I grew up with an affinity for Cleveland (Starkweather Ave represent!). I like him. I just like Benjamin better. You’re ignoring the part where I acknowledge Gordon is a better player. I’m not arguing, I just like Benjamin better.December 19th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
yea, nothin wrong with that. doesnt matter why you like em or if it makes real-world sense.
one of the reasons im developing a special mancrush for josh gordon because of how ruthless he blocks in the running game. poor DB’s…so sad…
December 19th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
It’s cool Stark I know you like U guys, I wasnt even trying to be sarcastic there. I realize the Clowns dont get on TV a lot. Benjamin is like a lot of Bronws being forced to do too much at this point in their careers due to the overall youth on the roster. He has his place on the 53-man and would be a good #4 WR one day. Using things like fake reveres with him to keep the DE’s and OLB from crashing the line to create more holes for Trent Richardson, things like that he has real value.
December 19th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
How does he make such amazing plays with such small hands?!
December 19th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
I want to see Saban in CLE just to watch Bama fans flip their shit. You think poisoning some trees is bad? Just wait until Saban leaves and takes Kirby with him as DC. Someone would probably burn Saban’s lake mansion to the ground.
December 19th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
You make the mistake of assuming he has human emotion.
This is true, but he’s a big fish in a small pond. Needs to have success outside of the minor leagues if he wants to be regarded as great
December 19th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
IIRC, Saban was pretty funny in that Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episode featuring the “jury of the damned.” (“The Devil and Homer Simpson”?)
But I’m still alive!
Hey, I did you a favor once!
Yes, master.
December 19th, 2012 at 4:42 PM
After 6 games in his first year. Smoke and mirrors offense that lived off bubble screens and pick plays, couldn’t run 2 yards for a 1st if they devoted an entire series to it. Raging child on the sidelines.
Fell in love with Tebow because he was so sure — sure! — of his own abilities as a QB coach that he thought he could make the kid unlearn everything he’d learned as a QB, ever. Drafted a blocking TE with a 2nd rounder. Tried cheating and couldn’t even fucking do that right. Also: Tebow.
