National Association of Black Journalists Plans to Speak with ESPN About Rob Parker Incident and What First Take is “Trying to Accomplish”
ESPN is still “investigating” Rob Parker’s comments on First Take last week about Washington QB Robert Griffin III. Currently, Parker is suspended for saying the following:
The buzz around ESPN this week is that Parker will be fired. Multiple sources are saying right now it is 75-25 that Parker will be terminated. The move would make sense for ESPN from this standpoint: First Take is the most criticized show at ESPN, but the network won’t shelve it because it generates ratings and is profitable. Getting rid of Parker wouldn’t hurt the show, either – it is a draw among the unemployed, uninformed set because of the two clowns who regularly host it, Skip Clueless and Screamin’ A Smith.
Parker has a checkered history of saying silly, troll-tastic things (see here, here and here), and firing him might appease the masses who loathe the show. Parker also reportedly has no agent representing him (which, depending on how many clients an agent has, could be a huge benefit).
The NFL has essentially condemned First Take, making players aware of the “discourse on the show.” Reading between the lines: the NFL knows the show is all about race-baiting, and is doing what it can to prevent athletes from participating. Surprisingly, one group not completely slamming the show is the National Association of Black Journalists. This week I spoke with Greg Lee, the President of NABJ, and asked him for his thoughts on the Parker incident:
We have had internal discussions and at some point, we will speak to ESPN about it. I know a lot of people there, and we want to grasp what they’re trying to accomplish on the show … But given that the show comes on 365 days a year, how often do you have a slip up on one of those shows?
One problem could be that the NABJ is very tied to ESPN (see here and here), which might be why they’ve been slow to react to the show’s rich history of ignorant behavior, like Stephen A. Smith saying the n-word, twice, with no repercussions from ESPN. The NABJ went after Phil Mushnick of the NY Post earlier this year; it has gone after CNN in the past. It is fairly surprising nothing has been said about First Take. Could one of the reasons be that Galen Gordon of the NABJ is part of the team that produces First Take? Those familiar with ESPN may remember Gordon as one of the guys who was the brains behind Stephen A. Smith’s “Quite Frankly.”
Lee went on: “I understand what Rob was trying to say, but the execution was poor. When they have discussions concerning race … if you misinterpret something … the way Rob executed what he said, the way he said it … the perception is he was race-baiting.”
ESPN holds pre-production meetings prior to all shows. Parker had to have made producers aware of what he was going to say. Apparently, nobody objected. At what point do the producers of the show get held accountable?

Am i the only one who couldn’t care less about a black man saying “N**** please” on TV?
December 18th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
What was he trying to say Lee? Just being edgy right?
December 18th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
While First Take often takes it too far, I do think there’s a place for race-conscious dialogue in sports… I hope ESPN doesn’t pander to the Deitsch’s of the world who obviously squirm at every mention of the obvious differences in which certain cultures/races view sports.

I’ve got $$$ on forced resignation over a firing.

surprising? ok.

These issues should be handled with care and discussed in an Outside-the-Lines format where experts who deal with these issues for a living can speak eloquently about them.
December 18th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
Get the sacrifice over with. Just ’cause Parker will get fired doesn’t mean the style of discourse on the show will change. ESPN will just insert another brown face to play the same role.
“Nothing else to see here; go on with your lives”.
And the beat goes on…
December 18th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Needs more outrage on that hideous shirt-tie-jacket combo in the video. Woof.
December 18th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
I’m sure Lee believes Parker said what a lot of black people are thinking and to fire him would be shooting the messenger.
December 18th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
Not sure where that comes from. There’s a place for arguments, and that’s pure sports topics–who’s the better QB, Cabrera vs. Trout, whatever. Once you start getting into social issues, slow down and quiet down. It shouldn’t be about disagreeing, but pulling the issue apart and trying to figure out an answer.
December 18th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
it is a draw among the unemployed, uninformed set

Good stuff.

Gordon as one of the guys who was the brains behind Stephen A. Smith’s “Quite Frankly.”
Being responsible for that show requires balls, not brains.

Trading Places is heavily edited as well. The first time I saw that movie it was on a Sunday afternoon on a local UPN affiliate when I was 12. It was one of the first DVDs I ever bought (along with Caddyshack) Until I watched the DVD I never realized how much tits and casual racism there is in it.

First Take needs more of the former.
December 18th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
TBL trolls often with his posts, such as the “popular with the unemployed and uninformed” comment, so it’s amusing when he calls others out for trolling.
December 18th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
So it seems he is echoing Parker’s sentiment. Will these jackasses never learn? And why wasn’t the $64,000 question asked? What was Parker trying to say friendo?
December 18th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
I believe it is often referred to as “stirring the shit.”
December 18th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
The Mr. Show take on Goodfellas edited (“Pallies”) still cracks me up.
December 18th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Does this include those that make their living by critiquing various media outlets? Because I feel like their viewership, especially when things like the above happen, is part of the reason this show is successful.
It’s like when people try awful food. They inevitably turn to someone and say, “Here, try this. See how bad it is.”
December 18th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Is “brains” the correct choice of words here?

Holy shit, Jamie Lee Curtis: much of my early wanking was done to her boobage.
December 18th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
So what was Parker trying to say? I’m pretty sure he said what he wanted, and it was an asinine statement. I don’t think he should be fired though, considering this is exactly the type of stuff ESPN wants him saying, or else they wouldn’t have Bayless on the show
December 18th, 2012 at 1:10 PM
The worst part of Lebowski in edited airings is that the whole Jesus subplot gets jettisoned.
December 18th, 2012 at 1:10 PM

December 18th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Oh my. Brady Hoke has lost control!
December 18th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
is the situation fluid?
As for Parker, the only good thing he’s done in the past 10 years is absolutely put Rod Marellini on blast. All downhill after that.
This is great. never gets old.

I was wondering the same. Was that 3 people guessing firing, and one not? Or 4 people collectively guessing a 75% chance? Or we a couple higher and a couple lower?
Either way 75% chance is a great hedge. Let’s people know you’re serious, but their is still a chance he comes back.
Can’t wait to see who breaks the story.

Hypocrisy of the highest order. In other words, standard operating procedure for ESPN.
Producer: “Say controversial shit, so the show gets attention. But don’t make it so controversial that it creates a shitstorm”
December 18th, 2012 at 1:20 PM

Just read an NCG prediction that declared Notre will “shock the world” by beating Bama.
That tired “shock the world” cliche, used constantly by American football players, needs to be retired.
You know what? The world is not “shocked” by your team winning; it’s largely unaware. The average Super Bowl audience (app. 100 million) comprises 0.014 percent of the world’s population. The viewing audience for the NCG might be half that at most.
The world is not “shocked.” It’s indifferent.

Parker wasn’t race-baiting; he was being a straight up fucking racist. the conversation shouldn’t be about the goals of First Take, it should be about the quality of the mouthbreathers “debating” each other. Parker stereotyped black people and criticized Three for not fitting into that stereotype. that’s racist.
I’m still waiting to hear what “the cause” is. maybe the NABJ can fill me in on what Parker was “trying to say” since they understand it.
December 18th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
Meh. I like the blog and think he does pretty good work but statements like that are hard to overlook. There are plenty of people that work in industry’s that give them mid-week days off and watch the show. There are plenty of people(judging by the ratings) that either love the show or hate-watch it.
Just because people have different schedules or different opinions doesn’t make them “unemployed and uninformed”. I just find statements like that to be very elitist and insulting, especially considering a lot of the reason his blog has been successful(making him a nice chunk of change) is because of these “unemployed and uninformed” people.
I remember he used to hate on Colin Cowherd and Cowherd did the greatest thing this blog ever experienced by putting it on the public map. Again, those “unemployed and uninformed” people that were home at 10am and immediately wanted to find out what this place was all about.

December 18th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Fair enough. I appreciate the response. Although you’re not as public of a figure as some, you do have a highly viewed blog and because of that, I think you should hold yourself to a higher standard than taking cheap shots at some people that are your readers. The statement reminded me of Mitt Romney’s 47% statement although the context was obviously much different.
I think you’re uninformed if that’s your only source of information, the same as I think people are uninformed if they only pay attention to one news source(ex. Fox or MSNBC). These guys are made to make opinions that some will agree with and some won’t. It doesn’t make them right or wrong anymore than yours or mine are wrong. The difference is that they are in a public forum and there are times where it’s obviously they make inflammatory statements just to push the meter. Other than that, it just makes me think of two buddies arguing over sports. I think most of us wish we could get paid to do that.

Love the show, or hate it. But to make First Take out to be some sort of race baiting show is bullshit. Those guys give their opinions on a variety of subjects, and they don’t run from their opinions, which I respect from anyone I agree or disagree with. They give it straight with no chaser.
December 18th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
I don’t believe this, seems too convenient that one of them is always going out on a limb with something or trying to start shit with a team/athlete…they know what they’re doing and it’s mostly manufactured with the irony being Rob Parker probably was saying what he really felt and caught the worst of it
December 18th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
narrow margin
December 18th, 2012 at 5:00 PM
Going out on a limb could more accurately be described as giving their opinion. Neither Stephen A. or Skip Bayless just came on the scene yesterday. Not only have they been known for being highly opinionated for decades, but they’ve been that way as beat writers for the teams they cover. That means they’ve written it and gone into the lockerroom afterwards. In this case, they make the show more than the show making them, so there would be no need for ESPN to “manufacture” opinions for these 2.
December 18th, 2012 at 9:15 PM
RP was always a dumbass. Adds nothing to espn.
December 18th, 2012 at 10:12 PM
Are you @baylessdefender???
December 19th, 2012 at 7:04 AM
Why doesn’t ESPN or this NAMBLA, whatever they are, organization attempt to clarify what Rob Parker meant, as they keep indicating? Everyone knows he was calling him an Uncle Tom, and Parker knew not to say it but was dumb enough to open his mouth.
I think the rest of the world would absolutely love this because Parker has generally been given a pass on the race-baiting he’s done on FT + espn.com but how can they now?
What if Bayless or another “white” guest on there raised issue with his girlfriend, wife or finance being white? him possibly not voting Democrat? his hair? I think you could count the seconds on your hands before they would be handed a pink slip.
If you look back at his First Take or writing, ESPN has normally given him a pass when he’s said stuff like this before. Cue up any of the stuff before the 2012 NFL Draft where he labeled every “White GM” racist for picking Andrew Luck before RGIII due to skin color. However, he was doing the same thing Jason Whitlock and Bomani Jones were writing on FOXSports.com/sbnation.com with 0 repercussions. There were folks (oddly enough Skip Baseless) who wanted RGIII due to the ceiling being higher than Luck, but that case was made by others who appreciated both. So, to sum up, even though people feared the typical demise of running QBs, as we’ve seen twice this year, you were called racist for admitting you would take Luck over RGIII based on pure talent.
One has to think ESPN is doing this “evaluation period” so they don’t get sued by the organization mentioned above or Parker for unlawful termination because he’d be bitter.
December 19th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
I am glad you mention the clown show that is “First Take”. The show used to be to good with Jay Crawford hosting and Steven A. was occasionally a guest spot. With Skip and Steven A. together everyday its a sideshow with almost every debate racially driven and non subject driven arguments. Kerry Washington has no control were is Jay would intrude with facts or stats to stop needlessness ranting. I try to swallow watching this show on occasion because it used to be the best show on ESPN other then 30/30 in my opinion. By the way I am big fan of the website my introduce it me 5 years ago. Great combo of sports, news, and entertainment.
